Popjustice: 'The One' is '4th Best Pop Song of 2007'
Stranica Popjustice.com proglasila je Kylienu pjesmu ‘The One’ koja se nalazi na albumu “X” četvrtom pjesmom 2007. godine te najboljom na albumu.
"The answer is 'The One', which is Track 7 - and the only big gay proper pop song - on Kylie's new 'X' album. It is sort of a cross between 'I Believe In You' and S Club 8's 'Fool No More' and you know within the first two seconds of your first listen that it's the album's best track. We really want to play you a clip of it but we are not allowed. Here is what it looks like, though.
Here are a flimsy set of explanations for the pictures we chose...
1. The intro sounds a bit like the opening of the 12" PWL mix of Desireless' 'Voyage Voyage'. This is what the opening of the 12" PWL mix of Desireless' 'Voyage Voyage' sounds like.
2. "There's a certain something in the air, can you feel what I feel in me, it's in the air, electricity." That's a lyric from the song, you know.
3. "I can see the look that's in your eyes." This is probably a very postmodern reference to 'In Your Eyes' by best-selling lady pop warbler Kylie Minogue.
4. This is Biff from Back To The Future. A producer called Biff was partly responsible for this song. Biff is famous for making all those hit 2wo Third3 records in the 90s, and also did a couple of Spice Girls songs.
5. "Like a shooting star in a galaxy, making its way to the heart of me." AMAZING.
6. "My pulse is racing and I'm feeling high." ALSO AMAZING.
7. "Glimmering under neon lights." BEYOND AMAZING.
8. This eye in pyramid nonsense is something to do with freemasons. The Freemasons join Biff on co-production duties. (NB: It doesn't sound like a Freemasons song.)
9. The best line in the song is "it's a feeling that I need to know, close to touch like Michelangelo" which we presume is refering to this piece of 'art' although we might be mistaken.
A few people on the Popjustice forums managed to work it out thanks to the Biff and Freemasons pictures, so well done to them.
The most amazing thing about the song (apart from brilliant tune, sh*t-hot production etc etc) is a really really clever structure which gradually unveils a killer chorus as the song unfolds, but also has another chorus chucked in for good measure. Basically after the Desireless-y intro bit it goes like this.
- Chorus A - instrumental
- Verse
- Chorus B which is basically Kylie going on about "I'm the one, love me love me love me love me" etc.
- Chorus A with "ah-ah-ah-ah" floaty bits in it
- Verse
- Chorus B
- Chorus A with full-on "can you hear me, I'm connected with you can you feel me I'd do anything to have you near me" vocal.
Then it all drops out and clatters back in with all the choruses going completely mental. It's all about 'Chorus A', viewers.
If this being track 7 on the album means it's going to be another 'Your Disco Needs You' - ie a potential Number One single which isn't ever released as a single - we're going to EMI and killing everyone with our bare bands. You'll be with us..."

Speakerphone is a REALLY cool track. On first listen, to me it sounds like everything Body Language wanted to be but wasn't. It's kind of like an amazing RnB/electropop crossover song. It starts with harp sounds... The effects on the vocals are totally cool. There's a little synth line in it that sounds a bit like the very beginning of Madonna's Lucky Star. You're all going to LOVE it.
Sensitized has new vocals and the proper sound mix sounds SO much better than the leaked version. The 'whoo'-sounds from the original sample (Bonnie & Clyde by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot) are still there.
I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when they hear Sensitized on the album for the very first time. It just sounds so much better than the demo, in HQ and everything.
Still listening to the rest of the tracks... But so far everything sounds amazing.
Like A Drug is a nice track. Not a single, I think. It reminds me of 'Secret' a little bit, musically. No rap though ;) And also Das model by Krafwerk, in terms of synths in the background. But I think that british newspaper that reviewed the album already said that.
Also; as I'm listening to In My Arms now... The audio mix is definitely MUCH richer than the dmeo that was leaked months ago. I don't know the song by heart so I wouldn't recognize if the vocal was new or anything, but it sounds basically the same as the leaked demo. Just a much much better mix.
I'm 30 seconds into Heart Beat Rock now and the synth REALLY reminds me of the synth line in Madonna's Everybody. Doesn't sound like a single to me, but of course this is just my first time EVER hearing it... The art director of the magazine I work for is dancing to it as we speak ;) I think we're going to decide to put Kylie on the cover of our November issue :)
A lot of people seem to be curious about Heart Beat Rock. The synth on it is kind of reminiscent of the synth on Everybody by Madonna. She doesn't really 'rap' on it, she raps on it like Gwen Stefani 'raps'. It's not like um... ,,I wanna gansta boogie with my gangsta bitch" or anything.
It's not really a standout track to me.
On The One the chorus is:
,,I'm the one
(Love me, love me, love me, love me)"
And when she sings 'I'm The One' her voice is very bassy... Quite nice :)
No More Rain is nice :) She sings 'No moooore' and then there are high-pithced vocals finishing 'Raaaiiinnnnn' very cool :) There's acoustical guitar on the song and I think I'm also hearing some strings (or synth strings). This is a downtempo song but not a ballad. The breakdown is quite cool, just a soft beat and Kylie whispering with some nice strings in the background and then the chorus comes back in :)
All I See has a harpy melody that reminds me of the intro to Brandy & Monica's The Boy Is Mine. It's a bit another downtempo song, nice :) Very mellow vocals, too :) She sounds very relaxed on this song.
OK I think I can skip Stars. It sounds exactly like the leaked version. Has almost the exact same track length as well (3 seconds shorter). Have the track lengths been made available yet?
Cosmic is playing now. Kind of like a ballad. I think I just heard her sing:
,,Wanted to take your place just sometimes
To know the things you know and why you did the things you do
To say 'no' one time and believe it
Oh I wanted so much but only needed you
Wasn't it just my choice to make the bed in which I lay
I put these things aside for years
'Til laughter took the place of tears
It's like I was asleep yet now I'm here"
Some more Cosmic lyrics, this is the first verse:
Wanted to write a song called 'cosmic'
Wanted to get a view of the earth
Wanted to be your lonesome cowboy
I wanted to love you 'til it hurt
Nu-di-ty has some cool stuff in it :) She's trying to be a bit urban again though ;) But that's not neccesarily a bad thing.
BTW she really does end the chorus with 'nu-di-ty' as in... She pronounced every part of the word seperately.
she says something Japanese at the very end of Nu-di-ty and then laughs. Kind of cute. It sounds like she says 'doh ta shimaste' (phonetically - I don't speak Japanese).
Wow is kind of like Love At First Sight :) And it's more like 'wowowowooooow' ;)
Wow is nice and radio friendly, the melody of the chorus is nice. And I think I said before that it's a bit like Love At First Sight... You know, during the verses the music is kind of muted (or the treble of the music, I'm not sure what the effect is called). I guess it's what a late 90s Kylie/Daft Punk collaboration could have sounded like. Not to say it sounds dated.
Ok... so far, and this is just from hearing the album like.. twice, the highlights are:
Like A Drug
Speakerphone (!!!!!)
Nu-di-ty
And I also really like Sensitized, I don't care what anybody says :P
Album - It's a good mix of pop and more electro stuff and urban stuff.
