Cressida - Asylum (1971)(2010)

Digitally remastered edition of this 1971 album housed in a digisleeve. Asylum, Cressida's second album for Vertigo, has eight extended Rock workouts such as `Asylum' and `Let Them Come When They Will'. Peter Jennings' keyboard playing enhances the lead vocals of Angus Cullen, backed by John Culley on lead guitar. With extra percussion and orchestral accompaniment, Cressida's sound has often been compared to their contemporaries, The Moody Blues. Repertoire.

Black Sabbath - Live Evil (1983) (2CD SHM Remaster)

Black Sabbath's first attempt at an official live album, 1982's Live Evil was also the straw that broke the camel's back -- or rather, split the legendary group's second lineup right down the middle. Band tensions were already at an all-time high leading into the album's mixing sessions, but when founding members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler accused singer Ronnie James Dio of sneaking into the studio to raise the volume on his vocal tracks, the pint-sized warbler decided he'd had enough and, guilty or not, departed to pursue a solo career, taking drummer Vinny Appice with him. Fateful accusations aside, Live Evil does benefit from a crystal clear, in-your-face sound, and by showcasing even amounts of both Ozzy and Dio material, effectively documents Black Sabbath's renascent tours of the early '80s. Ronnie certainly has the vocal chops, if not the same everyman charm, to handle the Osbourne classics, but his incessant banter between (and during!) songs sometimes verges on the unbearable. And even though the album's only truly transcendent moments may be the vicious introductory pairing of "E5150"/"Neon Knights" and the extended "Heaven and Hell"/"Sign of the Southern Cross" suite, there's also nothing really amiss with solid interpretations of such all-time metal classics as "Children of the Sea," "Black Sabbath," "War Pigs," and "Children of the Grave" either. And considering the as yet unknown travails awaiting Black Sabbath in the post-Dio era, Live Evil's troubled gestation has come to seem positively idyllic in retrospect...E. Rivadavia

Supertramp - Paris (1980)(2CD SHM-Remaster 2008)

Recorded in the wake of the global success of Breakfast in America, Paris is a competent live album from Supertramp...S. Thomas

This is one of the all-time great concert recordings. It is very easy to lose yourself in your imagination, transporting yourself into attendance on a Paris night that could just as easily have been yesterday as some twenty years ago or so. Listening to this recording gives you the feeling of sitting outside a parisienne sidewalk cafe on a warm night surrounded by friends. The music is tight, as good a any studio production from the band. I have to admit that the sound of the crowd can sometimes get a little annoying, given the perfection of the music, but this minor flaw is easily dismissed. I read where a professional reviewer said this recording was "unnecessary". I strongly disagree. This recording was not only necessary, but well worth the price. 1981's Mob Rules was the second Black Sabbath album to feature vertically challenged singer Ronnie James Dio, whose powerful pipes and Dungeons and Dragons lyrics initially seemed like the perfect replacement for the recently departed and wildly popular Ozzy Osbourne. In fact, all the ingredients which had made their first outing, Heaven and Hell, so successful are re-utilized on this album, including legendary metal producer Martin Birch (Deep Purple, Whitesnake, etc.) and supporting keyboard player Geoff Nichols. And while it lacks some of its predecessor's inspired songwriting, Mob Rules was given a much punchier, in-your-face mix by Birch, who seemed re-energized after his work on New Wave of British Heavy Metal upstarts Iron Maiden's Killers album. Essentially, Mob Rules is a magnificent record, with the only serious problem being the sequencing of the material, which mirrors Heaven and Hell's almost to a tee. In that light, one can't help but compare otherwise compelling tracks like "Turn Up the Night" and "Voodoo" to their more impressive Heaven and Hell counterparts, "Neon Knights" and "Children of the Sea." This unhappy streak is finally snapped by the unconventional "E5150," a synthesizer-driven instrumental. Then, the unbelievably heavy, seven-minute epic "The Sign of the Southern Cross" delivers one of the album's best moments before unleashing the roaring title track. Side two is less consistent, hiding the awesome "Falling off the Edge of the World" (perhaps the most overlooked secret gem to come from the Dio lineup) amongst rather average tracks like "Slipping Away" and "Over and Over." Over the next year, the sh*t would hit the fan for Black Sabbath, and Dio's exit would mark Mob Rules as the last widely respected studio release of the band's storied career...E. Rivadavia

Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever (1989)(SHM - CD 2009)

Cardboard sleeve reissue from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers featuring the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD players). Part of a eight-album Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers SHM-CD cardboard sleeve reissue series featuring the albums "Damn The Torpedos," "Hard Promises," "Long After Dark," "Southern Accents," "Pack Up The Plantation," "Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)," "Full Moon Fever," and "Into The Great Wide Open.

Although Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) found the Heartbreakers regaining their strength as a band and discovering a newfound ease at songcraft, it just didn't sell that well. Perhaps that factor, along with road fatigue, led Tom Petty to record his first solo album, Full Moon Fever. Nevertheless, the distinction between "solo" and "Heartbreakers" is a fuzzy one because Full Moon Fever is essentially in the same style as the Heartbreakers albums; Mike Campbell co-wrote two songs and co-produced the record, and he, along with Benmont Tench and Howie Epstein, all play on the album. However, the album sounds different from any Heartbreakers record due to the presence of former Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne. Petty co-wrote the lion's share of the album with Lynne, who also is the record's main producer. In his hands, Petty's roots rock becomes clean and glossy, layered with shimmering vocal harmonies, keyboards, and acoustic guitars. It's a friendly, radio-ready sound, and if it has dated somewhat over the years, the craft is still admirable and appealing. But the real reason Full Moon Fever became Petty's biggest hit is that it boasted a selection of songs that rivaled Damn the Torpedoes. Full Moon Fever didn't have a weak track; even if a few weren't quite as strong as others, the album was filled with highlights: "I Won't Back Down," the wistful "A Face in the Crowd," the rockabilly throwaways "Yer So Bad" and "A Mind With a Heart of Its Own," the Byrds cover "Feel a Whole Lot Better," the charging "Runnin' Down a Dream," and "Free Fallin'," a coming-of-age ballad that could be Petty's best song. Full Moon Fever might have been meant as an off-the-cuff detour, but it turned into a minor masterpiece...St. Erlewine

Anna Netrebko, D. Barenboim - In The Still Of Night - Songs By Rimsky-Korsakov & Tchaikovsky

In the second album soprano Anna Netrebko has devoted to music of her native Russia, she turns to songs by Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, most of which are little known in the West. The two composers were close friends, and in spite of occasional musical differences, admired and respected each other's work. It's easier to hear their musical kinship in these songs than in their large orchestral works and operas. The songs by Rimsky-Korsakov, who is familiar largely through his picturesque orchestral works, are most revelatory. They are rooted in folk traditions, without directly quoting folk sources, and besides their emotional directness and clarity, they are notable for their sophistication, delicacy, and lyrical grace. Tchaikovsky's songs, while similar in many ways, are more overtly romantically emotional, and their vocal writing is more virtuosic. In their heightened sense of drama, some have an operatic quality, and their accompaniments are exceptionally subtle and expressive. Netrebko and pianist Daniel Barenboim are very much equal musical partners in the endeavor, both in the selection of the repertoire and in the acute musicality of their performances. There are two non-Russian encores, ravishing performances of a selection from Dvorák's "Songs My Mother Taught Me" and Richard Strauss' "Cäcilie." The recording captures a live performance at the 2009 Salzburg Festival. Netrebko is in absolutely top form, singing with an enveloping, velvety warmth, and soaring with a radiant intensity. Her beautifully controlled and nuanced vibrato is always used with a keen sensitivity to the drama inherent in the texts, and her interpretations are driven by her gift for communicating with her audience. Barenboim's accompaniments are so shapely and subtly shaded that they could hold the listener rapt even without the vocal line. The sound of Deutsche Grammophon's album is vividly present, with a lively acoustic and minimum audience noise, except for the applause, whose riotous enthusiasm is a happy reminder of what must have been genuine electricity between the performers and listeners...S. Anna Netrebko - Anna (The Best Of Anna Netrebko)(2009)

Anna Netrebko was born in Krasnodar, in the south of Russia, in 1971. She received her vocal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where she appeared as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Violetta in La Traviata. In 1993 she was first-prize winner of the Glinka Vocal Competition in Moscow, and joined the ensemble of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, to which she still belongs. In 1995 she graduated from St. Petersburg Conservatory and made her sensational US debut as Lyudmila in Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila at the San Francisco Opera. Praised both for her glorious voice and beauty, Anna Netrebko is acknowledged today as one of the world’s most stunning young sopranos who sweeps audiences off their feet wherever she appears.

Dio - Diamonds: The Best of Dio (1994) (2005)

I have owned this 2 or 3 times now The first time I bought it in 1993 I purchased it to get a taste of the music before I went out to buy any of the albums. This cd covers the years 1983-1990 (Holy Diver through Lock up the wolves) and it is a good place to start if you are unfamiliar with Dio's solo work. There is only one non album track on here and its Hide in the Rainbow (great song) I think it was exclusively recorded for the film Iron Eagle and before this compilation was released the soundtrack was the only other place to find the song (The song Hide in the rainbow has not appeared on any other Dio compilation to my knowledge at least.) I really like the song All the fools sailed away from the album Dream Evil and its not included on this complation but I'm not too worried because I have the song on the cd. As I previously mentioned this a good place to start if you don't know too much about Dio's solo work...J. Jones

Dio is a heavy metal band formed by big-voiced Ronnie James Dio, in 1982, after his stint with Black Sabbath. The original line-up was Dio with Vinny Appice (drums), Vivian Campbell (guitar), and Jimmy Bain (bass). Claude Schnell was brought in after the first album so that Dio could be released from keyboard duties to concentrate on vocals. Their first three records were released in yearly succession, starting with 1983's Holy Diver and followed by The Last in Line and Sacred Heart. The first two achieved platinum sales, making those albums their most successful to date. Future releases were dogged by line-up changes, and after Lock up the Wolves in 1990 the band split for a while, during which Dio and Appice indulged a brief reunion with Black Sabbath. The return of Dio and Appice marked a change to a more commercial, modern sound and albums of this period (Strange Highways (1994), Angry Machines (1996)) are considered to be his best, or his worst, amongst fans. Magica (2000) was a return to the Dio of old and reached No.13 on the Billboard Independent charts. Dio marched on, with a steady progression of band members and albums until, in 2007, it was announced that Black Sabbath would reunite again, which may delay any further Dio albums until the end of that tour.

Dio - Holy Diver Live (2CD Set 2006)

Ronnie James Dio has issued quite a few live albums and videos since departing from Black Sabbath in the early '80s, but as evidenced by its title, 2006's Holy Diver Live is a bit different. Keeping in step with a phenomenon started in the '90s with veteran rock acts performing a classic album in its entirety, Dio revisited his 1983 solo debut, Holy Diver. Recorded at the Astoria in London on October 22, 2005 (not 1995, as the CD booklet erroneously lists), the double-disc set also includes a second disc comprised of highlights from Dio's Rainbow and Black Sabbath days, as well as a pair of tracks from another strong early solo release, 1984's The Last in Line. Dio is in fine voice all these years later (something that can certainly not be said of the majority of rock singers his age who have to rely on backing vocalists or prerecorded tapes), as evidenced by such standouts as "Rainbow in the Dark," "Holy Diver," "Heaven and Hell," and "Tarot Woman." And headbangers worldwide have to be happy whenever the woefully underrated Dio/Sabbath-era gem "Sign of the Southern Cross" gets an airing on-stage. Despite guitarist Craig Goldy not performing on this night (due to an arm injury, Doug Aldrich took his place), Holy Diver Live is quite possibly Dio's finest live album yet -- from both a performance and set-list standpoint...G. Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell (1980)(2CD SHM Remaster)

Japanese only 2 x SHM paper sleeve pressing. Features 2010 DSD Remastering. The SHM-CD [Super High Material CD] format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing, SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc, allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players.

A huge return to form - rejuvenated by pint sized wonderthroat Ronnie James Dio exactly as Purple had been by David Coverdale a couple of years earlier. Neon Knights and the title track are classic straightforward Sabbath, Children of the Sea, Die Young and Lonely is the Word married this riff-fest to the drama of Dio era Rainbow beautifully. Iommi's guitar playing takes another step forward here, and his solos throughout are the best of his career. His work on all of the above is almost operatic in scope, drama and fluency.
All together, this was Sabbath's most coherent, consistent and vitalmore… album, it showed the so called 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal' up for the spotty bed-wetters they really were.

The 2010 remaster adds 1980 live cuts and a dreadful, unremastered mono version of Lady Evil. The live tracks - Neon Knights, Die Young, two different versions of Children of the Sea and - bizarrely - two copies of the same Heaven and Hell (one faded out five minutes before the end) - all stick far closer to the album arrangement than Live Evil takes. Sadly, as fans commented at the time, Bill's disillusion with the band at this point (the live tracks were mostly recorded 9 days before he quit) is evident in his playing, which is unadventurous, often replacing studio flourishes with straight beat-keeping. The production on the live songs is very compressed and raw, like an untreated soundboard recording - which the new tracks may in fact be. One version of each of the doubled tracks, however, is taken from a released single. I presume they just couldn't track down the original recordings - which makes me wonder why they didn't replace one of duplicated Heaven and Hells with, say, a live version of Lonely is the Word, criminally dropped from the setlist once Vinnie Appice joined the band. The sound quality is quieter - and somewhat less punchy - than the 2004 Sanctuary release. You notice it straight away on Neon Knights, which sounds less brutal, full-on and remorseless. Like The Doors remasters, maybe 80s Sabbath doesn't benefit from too much retrospective polishing. In any event, turning up the volume solves most of the problem...D. Jellinc

Many had left Black Sabbath for dead at the dawn of the '80s, and with good reason — the band's last few albums were not even close to their early classics, and original singer Ozzy Osbourne had just split from the band. But the Sabs had found a worthy replacement in former Elf and Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio, and bounced back to issue their finest album since the early '70s, 1980's Heaven and Hell. The band sounds reborn and re-energized throughout. Several tracks easily rank among Sabbath's all-time best, such as the vicious album opener, "Neon Knights," the moody, mid-paced epic "Children of the Sea," and the title track, which features one of Tony Iommi 's best guitar riffs. With Heaven and Hell, Black Sabbath were obviously back in business. Unfortunately, the Dio-led version of the band would only record one more studio album before splitting up (although Dio would return briefly in the early '90s). One of Sabbath's finest records...G. Y&T - In Rock We Trust (1984)(Remaster 2005)

Y&T were One of the 80's Defining Hard Rock Acts. Originally Released in 1984, this Album Found Great Favor with European Metal Fans.

Y&T's difficulties in the recording studio continued with their sixth album, 1984's In Rock We Trust. You'd think the San Francisco quartet could have figured this out by now, but despite experimenting with a number of different approaches, recording techniques, and big-name producers, Y&T had yet to successfully capture their scorching live energy on vinyl. With Judas Priest producer Tom (Colonel) Allom on board this time around, they did manage to sound a little looser and more relaxed than on recent efforts, but to be quite honest, In Rock We Trust still paled in comparison to the freewheeling intensity of 1981's landmark Earthshaker album. "Masters and Slaves" and the driving "Break Out Tonight!" are among the highlights contained here, but the patriotic opener, "Rock & Roll's Gonna Save the World," pushes the cheese meter to the max. Making matters worse, on the ensuing tour the band would perform it in the company of their new mascot, the silver android depicted on the album's cover (aka Rock). The textbook power ballad "This Time" isn't half-bad and no doubt served its purpose as perfect "end of the prom" fodder, but consumers remained unimpressed and Y&T's slump continued unabated.

Y&T - Earthshaker (1981)(Remaster 2008)

2008 digitally remastered edition of the first album by this San Francisco Hard Rock/Metal band under their Y&T moniker (they were previously known as Yesterday & Today). Along with a handful of bands that would need no introduction to Heavy Metal fans the world over, Y&T did more than their fair share to make the '80s the all conquering decade that it so obviously was for Hard Rock. This 1981 album was the first of a blistering salvo of releases that set the bench mark high - almost too high! - for those that dared to follow. Earthshaker is a solid gold hard rockin' classic that sees its first time release on CD here in a digitally remastered for that guarantees that it sounds better than it ever has. Time to dust off that air guitar and throw some shapes!

1981's Earthshaker is the only unanimous moment of Y&T's lengthy career. The only studio album that came close to capturing the power and energy of the San Francisco quartet's legendary concerts onto disc, the band's third L.P. was their first for new label A&M, and the first to see their original moniker Yesterday & Today shortened to its better-known incarnation. Vein-busting metal anthems like "Hurricane" and "Knock You Out" boast a menacing swagger not seen before or since, and, even though they slow things down just a bit, melodic hard rockers like "Let Me Go" and the classic "Rescue Me" never waver in intensity or purpose. Admittedly, a few of the mid-paced rockers ("Hungry for Rock," "Young and Tough") have not aged all that well, but in the manic "Squeeze," bassist Phil Kennemore takes over lead vocals so that regular frontman Dave Meniketti can deliver one of the most passionate, over-the-top lead guitar performances of his career. And Y&T save the best for last, climaxing with their signature power ballad, the dramatic "I Believe in You" -- easily one of the decade's best examples of the style, bar none. Riding high on the back-to-back Top Five platinum hits Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises, Tom Petty quickly returned to the studio to record the Heartbreakers' fifth album, Long After Dark. Truth be told, there was about as long a gap between Dark and Promises as there was between Promises and Torpedoes. There are a few new wave flourishes here and there, but the band hasn't really changed its style at all -- it's still Stonesy, Byrdsian heartland rock. As their first four albums illustrated, that isn't a problem in itself, since they've found numerous variations within their signature sound. With its swirling, minor key guitars, "You Got Lucky" is a classic and "Change of Heart" comes close to matching the peaks of Promises and Torpedoes...St. Erlewine

A live document of Dire Straits' 1991-92 world tour supporting the On Every Street album, On the Night works sporadically, offering enough good material to interest fans but not enough to win back the commercial audience earned by Brothers in Arms. Stephen Thomas Erlewine

If you find a better live CD than this, please let me know! The live recording brings Dire Straits' music to life. Calling Elvis and Heavy Fuel are OK on the On Every Street CD, but they are pure hard rockers here. Paul Franklin's pedal steel adds a lot to the album, particularly on Walk Of Life. Romeo And Juliet is back, a much better version than their first Live CD set. Even the songs that are played much like the originals have more immediacy. Oddly enough, the least satisfying cut is Money For Nothing, the "anthem". Perhaps they've simply played it too much. (I've certainly heard it too much!) When the album ends with Brothers In Arms, you'll simply let it start playing all over again. This is one of the very few CDs that I never get tired of. This is a masterful, powerful album, great musicianship, music that makes you listen. You may find the vocals muddy on occasion, and the crowd noise is prominent (which I happen to like), but the crowd noise is used to blend the entire CD into one seamless performance, with no fades. Walsh's catalog by this point was two albums strong and of a consistently high quality. Despite a change of staff for So What -- a wide range of musicians are used, including the Eagles' Don Henley -- the sound is very similar to previous releases. A number of classic Joe Walsh tracks are featured including a more polished version of "Turn to Stone," originally featured on Walsh's debut album Barnstorm in a somewhat more riotous style. "Help Me Thru The Night," Joe Walsh's mellowest song to date, is helped along by some fine lead and backing vocals from the band. So What sees Joe Walsh in top gear as a guitarist. Most of the nine tracks feature solos of unquestionable quality in his usual rock style. The classic rock genre that the man so well defined with his earlier albums is present here throughout, and it is pulled off with the usual unparalleled Joe Walsh ability. ..B. Davies

Joe Walsh is perhaps best known for his affiliation with the Eagles, but he has had success as a solo artist and has served his time in other bands.

Though he didn’t join the Eagles until 1976, he had been playing music since before he left University. He first appeared on vinyl in 1969, as part of the James Gang. He appeared on four of their albums between 1969 and 1971 and the band enjoyed chart success with “Funk #49” and “Walk Away”. After leaving the band, Walsh formed Barnstorm and they released an eponymous album which sold moderately well. Then in 1973 he released his own solo debut The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get and scored a hit with “Rocky Mountain Way”. After two more solo albums, Walsh took over for Bernie Leadon in the Eagles in time to make his debut on the hugely successful Hotel California album. Throughout his tenure with the Eagles he continued to make solo releases and enjoyed his biggest success with 1978’s But Seriously, Folks and its No.12 hit “Life’s Been Good”. The Eagles split in 1980 and Walsh continued with his solo releases, but the sales were dropping off. During this time he toured with Ringo Starr as part of the All Starr Band and recorded an unplugged album with Dr. John. When the Eagles reunited, Walsh was there with them and has continued to be so ever since, up to the present day.

Hard to believe, but Capitol's 2008 collection Idolize Yourself: The Very Best of Billy Idol is only the second Billy Idol hits album to be released in America, following the first -- 2001's Greatest Hits -- by just seven years. Greatest Hits weighed in at 16 tracks and Idolize Yourself spans 18, adding two OK new songs to the mix (the moody "John Wayne" and the ham-fisted "New Future Weapon"), swapping out a live acoustic "Rebel Yell" and a cover of Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)" for the latter-day cuts "Speed" and "World Comin' Down," but otherwise this is built upon the same core 14 hits as Greatest Hits. This means that either compilation would serve the needs of most Idol fans well, but Idolize Yourself gets the edge, as the latter-day songs are just a bit better and it's also available in a deluxe edition with a DVD containing almost all of Billy Idol's music videos (two, "Hot in the City" and "Cradle of Love," are present in previously unreleased alternate cuts), which are essential to truly appreciating an artist whose fame was built in large part on his videos...S. Simple Minds - Graffiti Soul (2 CD-Deluxe Edition) (2009)

Featuring original members Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill (plus Mel Gaynor on drums and Eddie Duffy on bass), Graffiti Soul is Simple Minds' 15th studio album--the latest in a career spanning three decades. Following 2008's reissued The Best of Simple Minds, Graffiti Soul is the first album of new material since 2005. It has the roots of a traditional Simple Minds album, yet comes across contemporary and fresh.

Wow! What a return to form! The stand out tracks are Moscow Underground, Stars Will Lead The Way, Light Travels, Graffiti Soul and This Is It, but actually it's all pretty impressive stuff. Moscow Undergroud is dark opening track with a thumping bassline combined with a mellow vocals from Jim Kerr. Stars Will Lead The Way is a classic Simple Minds sound built around an unforgettable riff. Light Travels is slower and different...and almost hypnotic. It's a truly beautiful song. Graffiti Soul is a song that really does "Give You Lightening" and is another built on a great bassline and lead guitar. This Is It is very upbeat song and a crescendo to wrap up the album. A powerful combination of lead guitar and relentless drums. And what's more the Delux album version comes with a set of covers - which is not your typical lame cover album. Again, its superb - check out Let The Day Begin. All in all a real return to form. I just hope this enjoys the sucess it richly deserves, and "content" overcomes what's perceived as "cool!"...Dhaaar Jellinc

Stormbringer falls short of the excellence of Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, but nonetheless boasts some definite classics -- including the fiery "Lady Double Dealer," the ominous title song (a goth metal treasure), the sweaty "High Ball Shooter," and the melancholy ballad "Soldier of Fortune." Most of the other songs on the decent, if uneven, Stormbringer (which Metal Blade reissued on CD in the early '90s) are not essential. Like Come Taste the Band, Stormbringer will be of interest to Deep Purple's more enthusiastic fans, rather than casual listeners who would be much better off starting out with either of the above-mentioned studio projects or the live Made in Japan...A.Henderson,

AC/DC - High Voltage (Australian Only 1974)(Remaster 1995)

Australian import version of the classic AC/DC album High Voltage, featuring different track listing and original cover.

This is the original 1974 High Voltage release. Only released in Australia, you may notice its tracks resemble that of 74 Jail break released years later in 198something after Bon Scotts death. AC/DC released this and an album called T.N.T in Oz, and when releasing there first international release, they combined the best of the two albums... pretty much two tracks from this, and the rest where from TNT. However, this is still the only album you can hear "love song" and "stick around" or is that "you ain't got a hold on me?" ..whichever...

now, completely ignore amazons sellers asking 170 bucks for this? BUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA the album is still in print in Australia and it will cost you under 30 bucks to import it from here... god, what a rip off...M. Hunt

AC/DC - High Voltage (1976) (Japan Mini LP 2007/8)

AC/DC's 1976 album digitally remastered and reissued in a special digipak plus a 16 page full color booklet containing all original album art, many unpublished photos, classic memorabilia and new 2003 liner notes.

One of the perennial complaints about AC/DC is that they've never changed -- and if that's true, High Voltage is the blueprint they've followed all their career. Comprised of highlights from their first two Australian albums -- 1975's TNT and its 1976 follow-up, also entitled High Voltage -- the album has every single one of AC/DC's archetypes. There are songs about rock & roll, slow sleazy blues, high-voltage boogie, double entendres so obvious they qualify as single entendres and, of course, the monster riffs of Angus Young, so big and bold they bruise the listener upon contact. It's those riffs -- so catchy they sound lifted when they're original, so simple they're often wrongly dismissed as easy -- that give the music its backbone, the foundation for Bon Scott to get dirty, and rockers never got quite as dirty as Bon Scott. Scott sounded as if you could catch a disease by listening to him. He sounded like the gateman at hell, somebody who never hid the notion that lurking behind the door are some bad, dangerous things, but they're also fun, too, and he made no apologies for that. But for as primal as High Voltage is, it's also a lot weirder and funnier than it's given credit for, too -- those are bagpipes that solo on "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock & Roll)," and "She's Got Balls" is a perversely funny dirty joke. This is music so primal that it's enduring -- it feels like it existed before AC/DC got there, and it will exist long afterward. And if AC/DC did wind up bettering this blueprint in the future, there's no question that this original is still potent, even thrilling, no matter how many times they returned to the well, or how many times this record is played...S. J. Geils Band - Ladies Invited (1973) (Remaster Edit 2004)

The J. Geils Band were coming off their biggest album yet (Bloodshot, which hit the Top Ten on the Billboard album charts) when Ladies Invited appeared in 1973. It didn't reach the same level of sale (peaking at number 51) and none of the songs became AOR staples. Despite this, the record is solidly entertaining Geils, full of jumping party tunes and heart-punching ballads all composed by the band itself. As usual the up-tempo songs are the best: "Did You No Wrong" is a dynamic rocker with some blistering J. Geils guitar work, "I Can't Go On" is a full-out funky jam, and "Lay Your Good Thing Down" is fine blue-eyed soul with slick hipster vocals from Peter Wolf. The ballads here show a level of emotion and commitment that you might not expect: "My Baby Don't Love Me" is a countrified, tear-in-my-beer weeper with aching harmony vocals from Seth Justman, "Chimes" is an atmospheric, paranoid tune with great dynamics and a vocal from Wolf that veers between intimate and over-the-top howling, and probably best of all is the laid-back, Stonesy "That's Why I'm Thinking of You." It is really a shock that none of these songs caught on with AOR programmers. The only one that got a few spins was "No Doubt About It," and it is the album's highlight, a low-down and nasty blues rocker featuring the one and only Magic Dick getting down on his lickin' stick. That and stuff like the driving "Take a Chance (On Romance)" and the corny but fun "Diddyboppin'" should have been blasting out of radios up and down the strip, in high-school parking lots, and on the beach — basically everywhere AOR sounds the best. Don't let anyone tell you that Ladies Invited is one of Geils' lesser works. It is just one of the band's overlooked works that deserve a second listen...Bob Hope

While his tenure as the frontman for the legendary Roxy Music remained his towering achievement, singer Bryan Ferry also carved out a successful solo career which continued in the lush, sophisticated manner perfected on the group's final records. Born September 26, 1945, in Washington, England, Ferry, the son of a coal miner, began his musical career as a singer with the rock outfit the Banshees while studying art at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne under pop-conceptualist Richard Hamilton. He later joined the Gas Board, a soul group featuring bassist Graham Simpson; in 1970, Ferry and Simpson formed Roxy Music.

Within a few years, Roxy Music had become phenomenally successful, affording Ferry the opportunity to cut his first solo LP in 1973. Far removed from the group's arty glam rock, These Foolish Things established the path which all of Ferry's solo work -- as well as the final Roxy Music records -- would take, focusing on elegant synth pop interpretations of '60s hits like Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," and the Beatles' "You Won't See Me," all rendered in the singer's distinct, coolly dramatic manner.

Roxy Music remained Ferry's primary focus, but in 1974 he returned with a second solo effort, Another Time, Another Place, another collection of covers ranging from "You Are My Sunshine" to "It Ain't Me, Babe" to "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." His third venture, 1976's Let's Stick Together, featured remixed, remade, and remodeled versions of Roxy Music hits as well as the usual assortment of covers. 1977's In Your Mind was Ferry's first collection of completely original material; the following year's The Bride Stripped Bare, a work inspired by his broken romance with model Jerry Hall, split evenly between new songs and covers.

Ferry did not record another solo album until 1985's Boys and Girls, a sleek, seamless effort that was his first "official" solo release following the Roxy breakup. For 1987's Bete Noire, he was joined by former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr on the shimmering "The Right Stuff," and notched his only U.S. Top 40 hit with "Kiss and Tell." Another covers collection, Taxi, followed in 1993; Mamouna, an LP of originals, appeared a year later, and in 1999 Ferry returned with a collection of standards, As Time Goes By. After a brief tour in support of As Time Goes By, there were rumors of a Roxy Music reunion. The next summer, the practically unimaginable came true when Ferry joined Andy Mackay and Phil Manzanera for a tour of Europe and the U.S. It was a celebration of hits, and the band's first jaunt out in more than a decade. Electric Light Orchestra's third album showed a marked advancement, with a fuller, more cohesive sound from the band as a whole and major improvements in Jeff Lynne's singing and songwriting. This is where the band took on its familiar sound, Lynne's voice suddenly showing an attractive expressiveness reminiscent of John Lennon in his early solo years, and also sporting a convincing white British soulful quality that was utterly lacking earlier. The group also plugged the holes that made its work seem so close to being ragged on those earlier records. "Showdown" and "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" (the latter featuring Marc Bolan on double lead guitar with Lynne) became AM radio fixtures while "Daybreaker" became a concert opener for the group and, along with "In the Hall of the Mountain King," kept the group's FM/art rock credentials in order.

[ELO's third album -- now sporting its original U.K. cover image -- arrived in its remastered, audiophile version with a rich, subtle sound that captures not only the depth of the original master but also its finest nuances, so that you can practically hear the bowing on the strings for "Bluebird Is Dead," and the opening "Ocean Breakup" is loud enough to annoy your neighbors without much trouble or a big volume boost. And even the familiar AM radio material such as "Showdown," "Daybreaker," and "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" get new life pumped into them with the presentation here -- what one really appreciates on this new edition is finally hearing the master presented full out, the way it was done in the studio originally. Lynne was immensely proud of what he and the band -- which went through some important personnel changes in the midst of recording this album -- accomplished, and one can now fully understand his reaction. This was progressive rock, but with a distinctly rock & roll edge and also elements of pop-soul that wasn't quite like anything else coming out of either the prog rock or soul fields as they existed then; indeed, it's easy to hear now in these tapes something of a spirit close to Lynne's Birmingham roots, coupled with the experimentation he picked up under the influence of the Beatles' records. He didn't have a Paul McCartney or a George Harrison, or even a George Martin to play off of and augment what he was doing, but as a one-man creative operation, the results are still impressive, and the outtakes only enhance the listening. The early versions of "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" (titled "Auntie"), the alternate mix of "Dreaming of 4000" (designated "Mambo"), plus the previously unissued "Evereyone's Born to Die" -- which somehow makes this reviewer think of mid-'60s Bob Dylan amid its over-produced prog rock attributes -- and "Interludes" all let you in on different aspects of the creative process at work behind this album. This live recording, made in 1975, comes from Ritchie Blackmore's last three concerts with the band before leaving to form Rainbow. It features Deep Purple Mark III, with David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals. Coverdale is a convincing hard rock singer, though he lacks the winning quirkiness of Ian Gillan, while Hughes is a busier and more up-front player than Roger Glover. While "Burn" and "Mistreated" are worthy successors to previous Deep Purple tunes, the remaining material is weaker, and overall, this stuff is definitely a couple of notches below the glory days of Made in Japan. But Blackmore, for his swan song, still manages to inject a good deal of excitement, and his invention and fire raise the proceedings up somewhat. AC/DC are an Australian hard rock group formed in 1973 by ex-pat Scottish brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. They are hugely successful, having sold in excess of 150 million albums worldwide, with Back in Black ranking as the fifth highest-selling album of all time in the US. Their first album High Voltage was released in Australia in 1975, but after Highway to Hell (1979), the album which broke them in the US, their charismatic vocalist Bon Scott died from acute alcohol poisoning. Plans to split were abandoned when they recruited Englishman Brian Johnson to replace him. Back in Black had been started with Scott, but Johnson helped finish it and the album went on to sell more than 21 million copies, a double-diamond classification, in the US alone. It spawned the hit singles "Hells Bells", "You Shook Me All Night Long", and "Back in Black". For Those About to Rock We Salute You was similarly successful, but following albums began to suffer a slight decline in popularity - though they continued to win awards, score big hits, and perform massive gigs. AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Y & T - Down for the Count (1985)(Remaster 2005)

Originally Released in 1985, this Album Saw a Slight Mainstreaming of the Band's Classic Hard Rock Sound

After years of beating their collective head against the post of hard rock stardom, Y&T finally succumbed to the commercial conventions of the '80s and bowed to the synthesizer gods with 1985's Down for the Count. Under the guidance of new producer Kevin Beamish (REO Speedwagon, Saxon), Y&T joined the perm-haired masses then issuing like dandruff out of the California dust to redefine the meaning of the word "dumb." Not exactly a smash hit, the record is littered with faceless, going-nowhere-fast rockers like "Anything for Money" and "Looks Like Trouble." Even the relatively amusing "Don't Tell Me What to Wear" sounds completely forced when coming from a bunch of supposedly grown men. Out of this mucky muck, "Hands of Time" stands out as a fine, dramatic power ballad in the Y&T tradition -- anthemic and cheesy in all the right quantities. Following Down for the Count, Y&T's long-running relationship with A&M would finally come to and end, but the band would find small comfort at their new home, Geffen.

Y&T - Black Tiger (1982)(Remaster 2005)

2005 digitally remastered edition of the second album by this San Francisco Hard Rock/Metal band under their Y&T moniker (they were previously known as Yesterday & Today). Originally released in 1982, Black Tiger was the album with which San Francisco rockers Y&T followed their astonishing Earthshaker opus and, though not quite in the same class as its predecessor, the album has much to recommend it. Tracks like 'Open Fire' and the barnstorming 'Forever' remain crowd pleasers to this day. Krescendo.

"Black tiger" from 1982 is (together with the following "Mean streak") Y&T's finest effort. After an instrumental tune/intro "From the moon" the action really begin, and "Open fire" is a typical up tempo song by Y&T, similar to "Mean streak". The material is rather diverse and there's lighter and melodic tunes like "Don't wanna lose" (a real gem!) as well as fast rockers in the shape of "Black tiger". The bass driven "Barroom boogie" gives the album character and the captivating fan favourite "Forever" gives an example of a classic Y&T formula used on previous as well as following songs. "Hell or high water" shows Y&T's ability to be slow but still groovy and heavy without ending up like Dio on "Strange highway". The closing "Winds of change" is a ballad and `tho I'm not crazy about Y&T's ballads in general it's quite good. Highly recommended!"

Although it shook the band's fan base to its core, the acrimonious departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover served to rejuvenate Deep Purple in time for 1973's aptly named Burn album, which unquestionably showed huge improvement over their lackluster previous effort, Who Do We Think We Are. And in an interesting twist rarely attempted before or since, new recruits David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass and vocals, ex-Trapeze) traded lead singing duties on virtually every one of its songs -- an enviable tag team, as both possessed exceptional pipes. The phenomenal title track started things off at full throttle, actually challenging the seminal "Highway Star" for the honor of best opener to any Deep Purple album, while showcasing the always impressive drumming of Ian Paice. Up next, the intro to the equally timeless "Might Just Take Your Life," however simple from a technical perspective, remains one of organist Jon Lord's signature moments; and the downright nasty "Lay Down, Stay Down" roared behind wildly careening starts and stops and a fantastic Ritchie Blackmore guitar solo which left no doubt as to who was the band's primal force, regardless of lineup. Moving right along, though it was rarely included in later-day greatest hits sets, "What's Going on Here" was about as good a single as Purple ever wrote; "You Fool No One" was compelling for its sheer intensity; and the funky "Sail Away" was a sign of the band's direction in years to come. Lastly, the fantastic slow-boiling blues of "Mistreated" closed the album proper (let's ignore the record's only throw-away track -- boring final instrumental "A 200") with a command solo performance from Coverdale, as nuanced and sensitive as it was devastating. So impassioned was the singer's delivery, in fact, that the song would remain his personal, in-concert trademark with Whitesnake, long after his tenure with Deep Purple came to a close. Like the vast majority of Burn this song's greatness qualifies it for the highest echelons of hard rock achievement, and therefore ranks as an essential item in the discography of any self-respecting music fan...E. One of Deep Purple's four indispensable albums (the others being In Rock, Machine Head, and Burn), 1971's Fireball saw the band broadening out from the no-holds-barred hard rock direction of the previous year's cacophonous In Rock. Metal machine noises introduced the sizzling title track -- an unusually compact but explosively tight group effort on which Jon Lord's organ truly shined. The somewhat tiring repetitions of "No No No" actually threatened to drop the ball next, but the fantastic single "Strange Kind of Woman" nimbly caught and set it rolling again, just in time for the innuendo-encrusted hilarity of "Anyone's Daughter," featuring one of singer Ian Gillan's first (and still best) humorous storylines to go with one of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's most uncharacteristic, bluesiest performances ever. "The Mule" opened the vinyl album's second side with what is perhaps Purple's finest instrumental, and on the hyper-extended "Fools," the bandmembers proved they could flirt with progressive rock without plunging off its cliff (although the song could probably have done without its drawn-out middle section). And closing the album was the exceptional "No One Came," where intertwining instrumental lines locked together beautifully, Gillan wove another entertaining yarn that was part autobiography and part Monty Python, and the often underrated skills of drummer Ian Paice helped the song sound so unreservedly fresh and intuitive that one could almost be convinced the band had winged it on the spot. Sure, the following year's Machine Head would provide Deep Purple with their commercial peak, but on Fireball, the formidable quintet was already firing on all cylinders..E. Rivadavia

Deep Purple Live In Japan (2008 Japanese exclusive limited edition 7-track digitally remastered SHM-CD [Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players] album, originally released in 1972.

Live in Japan is a live album by English rock band Deep Purple, released in December 1972 in all of Europe and in May 1973 in the US. The album was recorded live over three nights during 15-17 August 1972 in Osaka and at Budokan in Tokyo, Japan, hence the name of the album. The tracks mostly come from their studio effort, Machine Head. The three concerts recorded were later released as Live in Japan 3-CD box set (1993). According to the liner notes for that set, unlike many live albums, there are no overdubs or studio additions to the original album.

Arguably one of the best live documents from one of the best hard rock bands ever. It has never sounded better having finally been remastered. Sure some of the songs stretch out a little (well some more than a little ie "Space Truckin"), but that's what makes this album so great. The band uses the studio versions to springboard into some of the finest rock jams ever put on tape. If you have the 2 lp vinyl set (and I know you're out there), definitely upgrade to this cd version. Every rock collection needs & deserves this album, I hope my review can give you the nudge toward the "add to cart" button...T. Wojii

Deep Purple - Live in Japan (1972) (3CD Remaster 1993)

This special edition three-CD set features the three 1972 concert recordings from which the classic Made in Japan album was selected, remixed, and remastered, and almost complete. A few encores and two songs from Made in Japan had to be left off, as the remaining tracks clock in at over 230 minutes. The band played almost exactly the same set each night, so there's lots of duplication here, but they're in fantastic form throughout most of the performances. The second show, over half of which did make it onto Made in Japan, burns brilliantly and white-hot from start to finish, and there are other new highlights as well, including the wailing encore "Black Night." Only you can decide if you need three 20-minute versions of "Space Truckin'," but for fans this is a valuable set -- not only for comparative listening (Jon Lord never plays the intro to "Child in Time" the same way twice), but also for presenting more of the band at and near the height of its powers. Frankie Miller - The Rock (1975) (Remaster 2003)

The Rock is the third album from Frankie Miller. It features The Memphis Horns and The Edwin Hawkins Singers who supply backing vocals on classic songs like, "A Fool in Love", which enjoyed considerable airplay on both sides of the Atlantic and was a sizeable hit in the USA. "Ain't Got No Money" became the album’s most covered song with notable versions from Cher, Chris Farlowe and Bob Seger. The song, "Drunken Nights In The City", was written for his late-night drinking buddy Jimmy Johnstone, the former (Celtic FC) Scottish footballer. The album was recorded in sight of the prison of Alcatraz in San Francisco, Miller commented that it was only music that had saved him that kind of fate and dedicated the song, The Rock, to the plight of prisoners, a reference to his 2nd cousin Jimmy Boyle.

Drive By Truckers - The Big To Do

ATO Records is pleased to announce the release of The Drive-By Truckers label debut, The Big To-Do. The album, which will be the band s tenth in their thirteen-year career, is scheduled to be released March 16, 2010. The Big To-Do features thirteen new tracks from the Drive-By Truckers and was produced by their long time producer, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). 'It s very much a rock album,' says Patterson Hood of the Trucker s upcoming release. 'Very melodic and more rocking than anything we ve done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera.' Hood and Mike Cooley continue to be the chief songwriters of the group, continuing a musical partnership that has lasted over twentythree years. Bassist, Shonna Tucker, flexes her songwriting muscles once again by contributing two original songs to the album. Brad Morgan (drums), John Neff (guitar/pedal steel) and Jay Gonzalez (keyboards) round out the current Drive-By Truckers lineup. The band recently backed legendary R&B musician, Booker T. Jones, on his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated album, Potato Hole. The album is nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

In his liner notes to the Drive-By Truckers' eighth studio album, The Big To-Do, bandleader Patterson Hood uses running away to join the circus as a metaphor for a variety of hopes, dreams, and ambitions, adding "I never really was all that into the circus as a kid, but I sure was into the Rock Show, which was sort of The Circus for kids of my generation." There's plenty of truth to that line, but while running off to chase the Big Top usually means escaping the realities of adult responsibility, Hood and his bandmates have become all the more willing to deal with the home truths of just getting by as they've become more successful, and The Big To-Do may be their most intense look yet into the messy realities of life in post-millennial America. In The Big To-Do, the Truckers sing about people trying to make sense of a world that's seemingly turned against them -- a young boy whose father has abandoned the family ("Daddy Learned to Fly"), a man who has lost a bad job and is struggling to support his family ("This Fucking Job"), a wife confronting her unfaithful husband ("You Got Another"), an alcoholic who can barely remember the wreckage he's left behind ("The Fourth Night of My Drinking"), and a father trying to figure out what lessons he can pass along to his children ("Eyes Like Glue"). The Big To-Do is a subtle but genuine step forward from 2008's Brighter Than Creation's Dark, but while that album dug deep into the darker undercurrents of its songs, The Big To-Do resembles Bruce Springsteen's The River in that its stories of folks under punishing circumstances are married to music that tries to find some sort of grace and honor in the struggle without dulling the lyrical impact. And the Drive-By Truckers are one band good enough to make this conceit work -- "The Fourth Night of My Drinking" is a ravaged tale, but the melody builds some compassion for its doomed protagonist, and the anthemic "This Fucking Job" brings out the bravery in characters pushed to the wall but determined to get through. And just as Hood's songs are as painfully honest as any he's written, the two tales of broken hearts contributed by Shonna Tucker add another, equally powerful perspective to the album, and Mike Cooley contributes three absolute winners, including the album's bittersweet closing number "Eyes Like Glue." The Drive-By Truckers have been the best and smartest hard rock band in America for a while now, but with The Big To-Do they also confirm they're one of the bravest, and they've created a triumphant album out of songs in which folks are forced to look failure square in the eye...M. UFO - Ufo1 (1970) (Remaster Edit 1994)

In the seventies, UFO became one of the superpowers of hard rock, releasing awesome album after awesome album in their heyday with former Scorpions guitar virtuoso, Michael Schenker. However, contrary to popular belief, the band’s musical career began quite a bit earlier than the better-known Schenker years. In their earlier days, the band featured a lesser-known guitarist, Mick Bolton. When UFO formed circa 1969, the group was called Hocus Pocus, but changed their name to reflect that of a famous club in London. In this early formative period, UFO released two studio albums, the first of which being the appropriately-titled UFO 1. Recorded on a shoestring budget, UFO has several challenging sonic moments. The uneven mixes and amateur performances that some listeners might find quaint or innocent could be distracting to others. In their pre-Michael Schenker days, the British band made a much more experimental noise that reflected psychedelic as well as R&B influences pitched with a dark resonance. This swirling mish-mosh barely suggests the early British metal of the group's commercial pinnacle that was still years off when they released their eponymous debut. Blue Cheer, early Black Sabbath, and maybe a little bit of the Who (mostly derived via bassist Pete Way's meandering, over-saturated basslines) all come to mind on standouts like "Boogie," "C'mon Everybody," and "Follow You Home." While ignored completely in the States as well as their British home, U F O was a bit of an international hit. "C'mon Everybody" made it to the top of the charts in Japan, which led to a tour of the country and enough career momentum to keep the records coming while the sound of (and worldwide market for) heavy metal slowly took shape. While far from being the best offering from Pete Way, Phil Mogg, and company, U F O is a nice pre-metal study that reveals how the blues/psychedelic amalgam inspired would-be metal artists before pop was injected into the genre.

When UFO started out, back before they had Michael Schenker join the band, they were a far cry from the incarnation of the band that got popular, and that most people remember them for being. Rather than the straight-up hard rock that would bring the band fame, this early face of the band used a psychedelic, heavy blues rock sound. Many fans of the group have dubbed this a “space rock” sound, and I think this is a good name for the musical sound conveyed here. The record came out in 1970, just as musical trends were changing, and this record serves as a beautiful example of that transitional period for rock and roll. Many of these songs have that classic sixties psychedelic hard rock sound to them, many of them hint at the band’s future sound, and many are the happy medium.

Argent - Encore - Live In Concert (1974) (Remaster 2001)

After the Zombies broke up, keyboardist/songwriter Rod Argent formed his own band in 1969, which incorporated more classical, jazz, and art rock influences in accordance with Argent's musical training. The group's other members were guitarist/songwriter Russ Ballard, bassist Jim Rodford, and drummer Bob Henrit. Argent's first two albums, Argent and Ring of Hands, received a fair amount of critical acclaim, but their real breakthrough came with 1972's All Together Now, which contained the Top Five smash "Hold Your Head Up"; In Deep produced a minor hit in "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll to You," which was covered by Kiss in 1992. By 1974, Ballard had developed his songwriting talents enough to leave for a solo career (Three Dog Night had a Top Ten single in 1971 with his "Liar," from Argent), and was replaced by guitarist John Verity and string player John Grimaldi. Without Ballard, the group lost its focus and indulged its tendencies toward extended art rock passages and improvisational solos to somewhat excessive levels. Argent broke up in 1976; Rodford joined the Kinks, while Argent himself recorded several solo albums and became a record producer, working with Tanita Tikaram, among others. ..Steve Huey

This album, originally released as a double LP in early 1975, was supposed to buy a little time for Argent as the group worked two new members, John Verity and John Grimaldi, into its lineup in the wake of the departure of co-founder Russ Ballard. As a result, it showcased a band that had already evolved out of the sound represented here, which must have seemed a pity for the fans who bought it. The sound captured on this album combines equal measures of progressive rock and hard-driving pop/rock into a whole that never lost its sight on rock & roll, as on "Thunder and Lightning" and "Music of the Spheres," or the more traditional sound of "Keep on Rollin'." With Ballard's guitar and the rhythm section of Jim Rodford (bass) and Bob Henrit (drums), the band could only stray so far from rock, and they and keyboardist Rod Argent, pulling in those opposite directions, ended up creating a scintillating whole on much of this record. Even the extended jams are focused and always maintain some serious forward momentum, though the opener, "The Coming of Kohoutek," comes dangerously close to fatal digression -- one can only quote Berlioz so far before the piece it's in loses its purpose as rock & roll. The 11-minute jam of "Hold Your Head Up" seemed a little excessive at the time -- a reaction probably caused, in part, by the substandard pressings by which the vinyl version of this release was seemingly universally represented -- but it holds up well today. And the band encored with "Time of the Season," a selection with which no one could possibly take serious issue -- they dress it up in some heavily ornamented drumming and guitar, but it's the song everyone knows and loves, done about as well as anyone who was not Colin Blunstone could ever handle it. The Collectables CD reissue boasts about the best sound ever heard on this set, and there's some pretty good annotation by Mark Marymount...Bruce Eder

Tales of Mystery and Imagination is an extremely mesmerizing aural journey through some of Edgar Allan Poe's most renowned works. With the use of synthesizers, drums, guitar, and even a glockenspiel, Parsons' shivering effects make way for an eerie excursion into Poe's well-known classics. The instrumental "Dream Within a Dream" has Orson Welles narrating in front of this wispy collaboration of guitars and keyboards. The EMI vocoder is used throughout "The Raven" with the Westminster City School Boys Choir mixed in to add a distinct flair to its chamber-like sound. Parsons' expertise surrounds this album, from the slyness that prevails in "(The System Of) Doctor Tarr and Professor Feather" to the bodeful thumping of the drums that imitate a heartbeat on "The Tell-Tale Heart." "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a lengthy but dazzling array of musicianship that keeps the album's persona intact, while enabling the listener to submerge into its frightening atmosphere. 30th Anniversary Special Limited Edition of The Steve Miller Band's landmark album. The CD is digitally remastered and includes 3 bonus tracks.

Steve Miller had started to essay his classic sound with The Joker, but 1976's Fly Like an Eagle is where he took flight, creating his definitive slice of space blues. The key is focus, even on an album as stylishly, self-consciously trippy as this, since the focus brings about his strongest set of songs (both originals and covers), plus a detailed atmospheric production where everything fits. It still can sound fairly dated -- those whooshing keyboards and cavernous echoes are certainly of their time -- but its essence hasn't aged, as "Fly Like an Eagle" drifts like a cool breeze, while "Take the Money and Run" and "Rock 'n Me" are fiendishly hooky, friendly rockers. The rest of the album may not be quite up to those standards, but there aren't any duds, either, as "Wild Mountain Honey" and "Mercury Blues" give this a comfortable backdrop, thanks to Miller's offhand, lazy charm. Though it may not quite transcend its time, it certainly is an album rock landmark of the mid-'70s and its best moments (namely, the aforementioned singles) are classics of the idiom. [Capitol released a 30th anniversary edition of Fly Like an Eagle in the summer of 2006 containing a remastered expanded CD and a bonus DVD containing the album in 5.1 sound, a documentary of the making of the album, and a live performance from the Shoreline Ampitheatre on September 17, 2005. The CD has three bonus tracks: original demos of "Fly Like an Eagle," "Take the Money and Run," and a slow, lazy "Rock 'N Me," all interesting early incarnations of familiar tunes containing the core of the finished version, but quite different in feel. Built around a relaxed recent interview session with Miller at home in his workshop, the documentary is quite good, telling hardcore fans all the stories they'd like to know about the making of the album, from Miller's status with Capitol at the time to how the songs took shape; it's quite fun to see him play the demos via his iPod. And while it's hard not to wish that the live concert presented on this set featured the 1976 incarnation of the Steve Miller Band, the 2005 show presented here is clean, professional, and entertaining, a nice way to round off a good anniversary edition.]...S. British rocker Steve Harley was born Steven Nice in London on February 27, 1951; the son of a jazz singer, he was stricken with polio at age two and spent the better part of his adolescence in and out of hospitals. After trying his hand at journalism, by the early '70s Harley was busking throughout London, forming the band Cockney Rebel in 1973 with guitarist Jean Paul Crocker, bassist Paul Jeffreys, keyboardist Milton Reame James, and drummer Stuart Elliott. Signing to EMI, the group debuted with The Human Menagerie; the single "Judy Teen" followed in early in 1974, becoming Cockney Rebel's first hit. Psychomodo was also a success, but as Harley's combative relationship with the press worsened he dissolved the group soon after. A Harley solo single, "Big Big Deal, " preceded the formation of a new Cockney Rebel lineup, which again featured drummer Stuart Elliott in addition to new guitarist Jim Cregan, bassist George Ford and keyboardist Duncan McKay. 1975's The Best Years of Our Lives generated Harley's first U.K. chart-topper, "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me), " on its way to selling over a million copies; the follow-up Love's a Prima Donna also launched a Top Ten hit with its cover of the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun." But in the wake of 1977's Face to Face -- A Live Recording, Harley again disbanded Cockney Rebel and relocated to the U.S., recording the better part of Hobo With a Grin in Los Angeles before returning to Britain. 1979's The Candidate failed to restore his commercial lustre, and with the exception of a minor 1983 hit "Ballerina (Prima Donna)" he spent the better part of the '80s removed from the pop scene. When his recording of "Mr. Soft" experienced a rebirth thanks to its use in a television commercial, Harley assembled a hits collection of the same name. Soon after he formed a new incarnation of Cockney Rebel and regularly toured into the following decade. 1999's Stripped to Bare Bones documents an acoustic set recorded the year previous. Dire Straits - Alchemy (1984) (2 SHM-CD 2008)

There is an interesting contrast on this 94-minute double-disc live album (recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon in July 1983) between the music, much of which is slow and moody, with Mark Knopfler's muttered vocals and large helpings of his fingerpicking on what sounds like an amplified Spanish guitar, and the audience response. The arena-size crowd cheers wildly, and claps and sings along when given half a chance, as though each song were an up-tempo rocker. When they do have a song of even medium speed, such as "Sultans of Swing" or "Solid Rock," they are in ecstasy. That Dire Straits' introspective music loses much of its detail in a live setting matters less than that it gains presence and a sense of anticipation. Alan Clark's keyboards help to fill out the sound and give Knopfler's spare melodies a certain majesty, but Dire Straits remains an overgrown bar band with a Bob Dylan fixation, and that's exactly how the crowd likes it. (The CD version of the album contains one extra track, "Expresso Love," which adds a needed change of pace to the otherwise slow-moving first disc)...W. Ruhlmann

Listening to Knopler's guitar work on a studio album sends chills, he is amazing. The only thing better is hearing him live. Alchemy is a fantastic live album. What he does live on Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road alone is worth it, but the whole damn thing is great. If you are a Dire Straits fan this is essential...K. Ligore

Exactly ten years after Dire Straits' first compilation, Money for Nothing, appeared in the stores, their second, Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits, was released. Though a decade is a significant span of time, Dire Straits had released just two subsequent albums -- 1991's On Every Street and 1993's On the Night, a live album culled from tapes of the record's supporting tour. Not quite enough material for a new greatest-hits album, but it had been years since Dire Straits had released an album of any sort (a compilation of BBC sessions snuck into the stores in 1995) -- hence the birth of Sultans of Swing. Unsurprisingly, it covers much of the same ground as Money for Nothing, containing all the essentials ("Sultans of Swing," "Romeo and Juliet," "Tunnel of Love," "Private Investigations," "Twisting by the Pool," "Money for Nothing," "Brothers in Arms," "Walk of Life"), with the exception of "Telegraph Road," which was left on the earlier compilation. A live "Love Over Gold," "Lady Writer" and "So Far Away" replace "Down to the Waterline," "Where Do You Think You're Going" and a live "Portobello Belle," which is really just a trade-off, since they're all equal in quality. Then there are the three hits from On Every Street ("Calling Elvis," "Heavy Fuel," "On Every Street"), all of which are pleasant recreations of the Brothers in Arms sound; a live version of "Your Latest Trick" from On the Night, and, inexplicably, Mark Knopfler's "Wild Theme (Theme from Local Hero)." Fine tunes all, but none of them are reason enough to replace Money for Nothing with Sultans of Swing. For casual fans or curious listeners looking for an introduction/sampler, it's the better choice, simply because it covers more ground and contains more music while remaining quite listenable and entertaining...S. Paul McCartney & Wings - Band On The Run (1973)(24k Gold DCC Rem. 1993)

If Paul will be remembered for anything post-Beatles, it's this album. Even though he had to go all over creation to record it, the trip was obviously worthwhile, bringing forth gems like "Helen Wheels," "Jet," and the title track. Everything was in place, the melodies, the pop smarts, and a real studio production. The amazement was that Wings actually consisted of Paul and Linda with guitarist Denny Laine; Paul played most everything on the record. Regardless, it was his return--finally--to greatness...Ch. Neither the dippy, rustic Wild Life nor the slick AOR flourishes of Red Rose Speedway earned Paul McCartney much respect, so he made the self-consciously ambitious Band on the Run to rebuke his critics. On the surface, Band on the Run appears to be constructed as a song cycle in the vein of Abbey Road, but subsequent listens reveal that the only similarities the two albums share are simply superficial. McCartney's talent for songcraft and nuanced arrangements is in ample display throughout the record, which makes many of the songs -- including the nonsensical title track -- sound more substantial than they actually are. While a handful of the songs are excellent -- the surging, inspired surrealism of "Jet" is by far one of his best solo recordings, "Bluebird" is sunny acoustic pop, and "Helen Wheels" captures McCartney rocking with abandon -- most of the songs are more style than substance. Yet McCartney's melodies are more consistent than any of his previous solo records, and there are no throwaways; the songs just happen to be not very good. Still, the record is enjoyable, whether it's the minor-key "Mrs. Vandebilt" or "Let Me Roll It," a silly response to John Lennon's "How Do You Sleep?," which does make Band on the Run one of McCartney's finest solo efforts. However, there's little of real substance on the record. Paul McCartney's Wings - Band On The Run (1973)(2CD - 25th Anniversary Edit)

The consensus of critics, as well as cold hard sales figures, says that Band on the Run was Paul McCartney's most successful solo album -- and so, shortly after the 25th anniversary of its release, Band on the Run got the deluxe boxed treatment. The original album itself was remastered yet again, the sound improved only slightly over previous versions, and the track order made to follow that of the U.S. release (the British version does not include "Helen Wheels"). The real attraction of this box, though, is the second disc, a radio-style program containing interviews with Paul, Linda Mac, Wings member Denny Laine, and other contributors, plus demos, rehearsals, assorted outtakes, and edited portions from the original album. The documentary makes it clear that not only was Band on the Run an artistic triumph over very trying conditions -- the defection of two-fifths of Wings and the whimsical decision to record in the primitive, sometimes dangerous conditions of Lagos, Nigeria -- it was a marketing triumph as well. Capitol promotion man Al Coury tells how he spotted the hitmaking potential of "Jet," the album's second single and the one that really launched it into chart orbit. A lot of attention, perhaps too much, is also paid to the making of the album's cover photo, elevating it to the level of the cover art of Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road. Interestingly, Laine gets one fact wrong on the interview disc -- they played "Picasso's Last Words," not "Mamunia," in Ginger Baker's Lagos studio -- which Mark Lewisohn's authoritative liner notes make clear. You also get a reproduction of the poster that came with the LP. All of this comes at a two-CDs-for-the-price-of-one deal -- which should be downright irresistible for those who haven't replaced their original LPs...R. S. Ginell

The Hollies - French '60s EP Collection, Vol. 2 (1996) (22-track Digipack 24 bit Remaster 2001)

Digitally remastered collection of the hit British Invasion pop group's best for EMI in the '60s, 22 tracks total. Gatefold slipcase. 2001release.

The first 16 of these 22 tracks are drawn from French EPs released in the 1960s, all of the music hailing from the late-1966/late-1967 era. In fact, there are only two big hits ("On a Carousel" and "Carrie Anne") here, though "Tell Me to My Face" was one of the Hollies' most deservedly popular LP tracks, and "Dear Eloise" was a small hit in the U.S. The rest of it's decent if uneven British pop/rock from the time the group was making the transition to somewhat more sophisticated songwriting. But you'd have to be a little screwy to pick this up unless you're a die-hard completist, as it kind of samples pell-mell from the group's LPs and singles of the period; it's much more effective to get the tracks on reissues of those LPs, and the best Hollies compilations. Does this, however, offer anything for that die-hard completist? Yes, as a matter of fact; among the four "bonus tracks" is "A Taste of Honey," which only found release on their US 1966 Beat Group! LP. (It has in fact not appeared on any other CD; the version that appears on the box set The Long Road Home 1963-2003 is not the one from 1966, but an entirely different 1968 re-recording.) It's not as good as the Beatles' interpretation of that standard, but it's fairly decent, with a harder-rocking swing than the Fab Four used. As for the other three bonus tracks, the soundtrack theme "After the Fox" has appeared elsewhere, and "You in My Arms" and "She Gives Me Everything I Want," though marked as unreleased, are heard in much better company (and are much easier to find) on 30th Anniversary Collection 1963-1993, as is "After the Fox" for that matter. The French EP tracks do include a couple of B-sides that weren't easy to come by for years, but the very good "Signs That Will Never Change" has been on at least a couple of American CDs (including the ever-useful 30th Anniversary Collection), while "All the World Is Love" has appeared on several more readily available anthologies. Like everything in this series, though, the booklet does include color reproductions of the French EP covers from which most of the tracks were plucked, as well as some other rare foreign picture sleeves...Richie Unterberger

The Hollies - French '60s EP Collection, Vol. 3 (1996) (22-track Digipack 24 bit Remaster 2001)

One of the best and most commercially successful pop/rock acts of the British Invasion, when the Hollies began recording in 1963, they relied heavily upon the R&B/early rock & roll covers that provided the staple diet for countless British bands of the time. They quickly developed a more distinctive style of three-part harmonies (heavily influenced by the Everly Brothers), ringing guitars, and hook-happy material, penned by both outside writers (especially Graham Gouldman) and themselves, eventually composing most of their repertoire on their own. The best early Hollies records evoke an infectious, melodic cheer similar to that of the early Beatles, although the Hollies were neither in their class (not an insult: nobody else was) nor demonstrated a similar capacity for artistic growth. They tried, though, easing into somewhat more sophisticated folk-rock and mildly psychedelic sounds as the decade wore on, especially on their EP's (which contain quite a few overlooked highlights).

Doro & Warlock - Rare Diamonds (1996) (2005)

Rare Diamonds is a nice overview of the legendary Doro Pesch's career with the band Warlock as well as her solo material. Doro really is the first lady of metal, and is probably best known for the Warlock anthems All We Are and I Rule the Ruins (which is mysteriously absent from this collection). She's had great success with her solo career as well, so an anthology like Rare Diamonds is a great way to experience Doro's aggressive yet beautiful music. Back in the day, this type of music would be called power metal. Now it would probably fall into the true metal category. Either way, every metal fan should have some Doro in their collection, and Rare Diamonds is the perfect album to start with...J. Gaines

Bad Company - Best Ballads (1996)

Bad Company was a British blues-rock supergroup formed in 1973 featuring members of Free (Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke), Mott the Hoople (Mick Ralphs) and King Crimson (Boz Burrell). Their eponymous debut album was released in 1974 and was an immediate hit, promoted by the singles "Can't Get Enough" and ""Movin' On". They repeated this success the following year with Straight Shooter which spawned the singles "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" and "Feel Like Makin' Love". The albums they released during this incarnation of the band peaked with the platinum-selling Run with the Pack but began to decline towards the end of the 70s. After the comparatively poor performance of Rough Diamonds, and with bandmembers becoming increasingly disenchanted with stadium concerts and the size of their success, they disbanded. The band reformed in 1986, without Rodgers who remained with The Firm, leaving the other three members to find a new vocalist, Brian Howe. The resulting album, 1986's Fame and Fortune, had a keyboard-based sound but failed to perform as well as earlier Bad Company albums. Abandoning the keyboards they returned to rock for 1988's Dangerous Age, which fared rather better. 1990's Holy Water continued the run of success, achieving platinum sales. Howe's last studio album with the band was 1992's Here Comes Trouble before he left amidst enduring acrimony.
The band recruited Robert Hart to take over vocals, and the albums he recorded, Company of Strangers (1995) and Stories Told & Untold (1996), were not commercially successful, and Hart left the band. In 1998 Rodgers returned to the Bad Company fold, recording four new songs for the compilation album The Original Bad Company Anthology (1999), though no further studio albums appeared. The original members continue to tour.

Ozzy Osbourne - Black Rain (2007)(2 CD Tour Edition)

To a certain extent, Ozzy Osbourne doesn't need to make new music -- and to a certain extent he hasn't, choosing to not record an album of original material in the years immediately after the reality TV show The Osbournes once again turned him into a household name. At the peak of Ozzy's fame in the early '80s, he was a boogeyman, embodying all the dangers of rock & roll, but the TV show made him safe, even cuddly -- a punch line at the White House Foreign Correspondent's Dinner -- which just helped him rake in the money, particularly since in addition to riding the wave of The Osbournes, his annual OzzFest tour turned into an institution of sorts, helping launch new bands while tending to his metal credibility. Now, that is a rock & roll machine, one driven entirely by personality, not new musical product, and one that was nearly in perpetual motion, never needing new grist for the mill to turn a profit. Yet there's always a risk that an enterprise like that could grow a bit stale, even with the occasional box sets, live albums, and cover records to keep things humming. And so, Ozzy finally got around to a new album original material, releasing Black Rain in the summer of 2007, a full six years after Down to Earth, his last album of originals, and well past the sell-by date of his TV show -- proof that this record isn't about cashing-in, it's about keeping the Osbourne machine rolling.

Black Rain was released just a year and half before Ozzy's 60th birthday, and he does sound like a veteran -- he can't wail like he used to, opting for a lower-register growl, but perhaps the biggest indication that he's getting on in years is that he doesn't rock as hard as he once did. Sure, longtime axeman Zakk Wylde is here playing some mean guitar, but this isn't as heavy as he was even a decade ago, lacking both the gut-level punch and monster riffs of even his post-Randy Rhoads work. Certainly, this level of heaviosity is missed, but it's also true that if Ozzy really strived for a brutal attack he might wind up sounding older than he already does here, so hearing him ease into a hazily dark, vaguely psychedelic heavy rock as reminiscent of Lennon as it is of Sabbath is oddly appropriate. Nothing on Black Rain could really qualify as an Osbourne classic, but there's something curiously comforting about Ozzy relaxing a little bit and singing songs that are strangely age-appropriate -- something that's not respectable, necessarily, something that is still metal, but something that isn't quite as heavy as before, yet retaining that swirling, circular melodies and murky grind that has been his stock and trade for nearly 40 years. If the music feels a bit older, so do Ozzy's lyrics. He spends a startling amount of time addressing the ills of the world, ranging from terrorism to consumerism, and for once his fondness for gloomy doomsday imagery jibes with the conventional-held opinion of the state of the world (although he never gets as apocalyptic as Cormac McCarthy's The Road, or the Left Behind series, for that matter, which frankly is a relief). This unintentional zeitgeist piggybacking helps Black Rain feel timely and appropriate, which is a mildly shocking turn of events, and helps the album feel something closer to a work of art than a piece of product for the Ozz machine. It's hardly a perfect record -- producer Kevin Churko, who engineered Osbourne's Under Cover and also produced Cheap Trick's 2006 Rockford, has a long history of pop editing and engineering, including credits on Britney's Oops!...I Did It Again, Shania Twain's Up!, and Celine Dion's New Day Has Come, and all that history is evident in the album's slightly too punchy and precise sound. But even if Black Rain is a bit clean, a bit soft in the center, it's far from an embarrassment, and it's surprisingly likeable -- kind of like Ozzy himself in the new millennium, really, so it's nice that he finally has an album that lives up to his well-scrubbed, reputable persona.
