Stone The Crows - Ontinuous Performance (1972) (Digipak Remaster 2004)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Stone the Crows was a tough-luck, working class, progressive soul band that came out of the pubs of Scotland in the early '70s. They had everything going for them at the start: not one, but two gritty singers, a talented guitarist, a rhythm section that had played with John Mayall, and the name recognition of having Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant as their producer. Despite favorable reviews by the critics, however, they never managed to sell their hybridized soul music to a large audience. In addition, they lost two of their key members early on, one of whom was tragically electrocuted, and the group broke up after four albums. Their biggest contribution to rock was the immense vocal talent of one Maggie Bell. Winner of several Top Girl Singer awards in Britain, Bell had a raunchy, gutbucket voice that, although it fell short of the naked emotion and range of Janis Joplin's, came probably closer to her style than any other female singer. She first attracted notice when she jumped up on stage at a show in Glasgow to wail with Alex Harvey of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Impressed by her talent (and audacity), Harvey hooked her up with his guitar-playing younger brother Les, then fronting a local band called the Kinning Park Ramblers. After playing army bases in Europe for several years as Power, Bell, Harvey, bassist Jim Dewar, keyboardist Jon McGinnis, and drummer Colin Allen (who had played with future bass player Steve Thompson in John Mayall's band), came to the attention of Peter Grant and they changed their name to Stone the Crows, which supposedly is a Scottish variation of "the hell with it." Both of their first two albums received good reviews upon release, but sold very meagerly. Then bassist/vocalist Jim Dewar quit the band to join Robin Trower's fledgling group, to be replaced by the non-singing Steve Thompson. Shortly after releasing Teenage Licks, guitarist Les Harvey was electrocuted onstage during a gig at Swansea University. This appeared to end the band, but they carried on, recruiting young Jimmy McCulloch from Thunderclap Newman and released "'Ontinuous Performance." Although the rock press lauded the singing of Bell, her group couldn't seem to emerge from the shadows and they broke up after this last album, with McCulloch flying away to join Paul McCartney in Wings...P. Stone The Crows - Stone The Crows (1970) (Digipak Remaster 2004)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Stunning debut album from one of the "lost" bands of the 70's that should be in any serious classic rock fan's collection. You may not know the band by name, but many are sure to recognize one or two of the pedigrees involved. Lead vocalist Maggie Bell, whose bluesy and soulful whiskey-soaked voice recalls Janis Joplin and Bonnie Tyler, pursued a solo career after the group dissolved. Bass player and backing vocalist Jim Dewar went on to greater fame for his distinctive singing on Robin Trower's early albums (give a listen to "Touch Of Your Hand" for the sound of those unmistakable pipes!) Unsung guitarist Les Harvey (brother of glam-rocker Alex) had his career tragically cut short in an infamous onstage electrocution during a Stone The Crows concert.(Listen to his acoustic playing on "Blind Man" to hear what I mean by "unsung guitarist"). Remastering on the most recent import edition is outstanding. Pick one up while you can!...D. Hartley

Dire Straits - Love Over Gold (1982) (SHM-CD 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic 1982 album. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

Adding a new rhythm guitarist, Dire Straits expands its sounds and ambitions on the sprawling Love Over Gold. In a sense, the album is their prog rock effort, containing only five songs, including the 14-minute opener "Telegraph Road." Since Mark Knopfler is a skilled, tasteful guitarist, he can sustain interest even throughout the languid stretches, but the long, atmospheric, instrumental passages aren't as effective as the group's tight blues-rock, leaving Love Over Gold only a fitfully engaging listen...S. Vanilla Fudge - Psychedelic Sundae: Best Of (Digipak Remaster 1993)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A definitive collection showcasing the cream of the band's five studio albums, plus rare non-LP single sides. Heavyweight ear candy for the psychedelic set!

Vanilla Fudge was one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became heavy metal. While the band did record original material, they were best known for their loud, heavy, slowed-down arrangements of contemporary pop songs, blowing them up to epic proportions and bathing them in a trippy, distorted haze. Originally, Vanilla Fudge was a blue-eyed soul cover band called the Electric Pigeons, who formed on Long Island, NY, in 1965. Organist Mark Stein, bassist Tim Bogert, and drummer Joey Brennan soon shortened their name to the Pigeons and added guitarist Vince Martell. They built a following by gigging extensively up and down the East Coast, and earned extra money by providing freelance in-concert backing for girl groups. In early 1966, the group recorded a set of eight demos that were released several years later as While the Whole World Was Eating Vanilla Fudge, credited to Mark Stein & the Pigeons.

Inspired by the Vagrants, another band on the club circuit led by future Mountain guitarist Leslie West, the Pigeons began to put more effort into reimagining the arrangements of their cover songs. They got so elaborate that by the end of the year, drummer Brennan was replaced by the more technically skilled Carmine Appice. In early 1967, their manager convinced producer George "Shadow" Morton (who'd handled the girl group the Shangri-Las and had since moved into protest folk) to catch their live act. Impressed by their heavy, hard rocking recasting of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On," Morton offered to record the song as a single; the results landed the group a deal with the Atlantic subsidiary Atco, which requested a name change. The band settled on Vanilla Fudge, after a favorite ice cream flavor. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" didn't perform as well as hoped, but the band toured extensively behind its covers-heavy, jam-oriented debut album Vanilla Fudge, which gradually expanded their fan base. Things started to pick up for the band in 1968: early in the year, they headlined the Fillmore West with the Steve Miller Band, performed "You Keep Me Hangin' On" on The Ed Sullivan Show, and released their second album, The Beat Goes On. Despite its somewhat arty, indulgent qualities, the LP was a hit, climbing into the Top 20. That summer, Atco reissued "You Keep Me Hangin' On," and the second time around it climbed into the Top Ten. It was followed by Renaissance, one of Vanilla Fudge's best albums, which also hit the Top 20. The band supported it by touring with Jimi Hendrix, opening several dates on Cream's farewell tour, and late in the year touring again with the fledgling Led Zeppelin as their opening act.

In 1969, the band kept touring and released their first album without Morton, the expansive, symphonic-tinged Near the Beginning. After part of the band recorded a radio commercial with guitarist Jeff Beck, the idea was hatched to form a Cream-styled power trio with plenty of individual solo spotlights. Exhausted by the constant touring, the band decided that their late-1969 European tour would be their last. Following the release of their final album, Rock & Roll, Vanilla Fudge played a few U.S. farewell dates and disbanded in early 1970. Bogert and Appice first formed the hard rock group Cactus, then later joined up with Jeff Beck in the aptly named Beck, Bogert & Appice. Appice went on to become an active session and touring musician, working with a variety of rock and hard rock artists. Vanilla Fudge reunited in 1984 for the poorly received Mystery album, and have since reunited several more times, though only for tours. Their most recent incarnation features keyboardist Bill Pascali in place of Mark Stein...S. Huey

Canned Heat - Kaleidoscope (Live Topanga Corral) (1969) (Digipak Rem. 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Formed in L.a. In 1965, Canned Heat were a Blues / Boogie Rock Band Whose Music was Not Only Responsible for Passing on the Blues Fever to the Hippie Generation, but also for Bringing Back Into the Public Eye Some of the Great Original Bluesmen Like John Lee Hooker, with Whom They Later Played. Originally Released as Live at the Topanga Corral for Contractual Reasons, this Album was Actually Recorded Live at Los Angeles' Famed Kaleidoscope Club. This Recording, Made in 1969, features the Original Line-up with the Great Bob Hite on Vocals and Alan Wilson on Guitar and is One of their Best Live Recordings Ever! the Band Definitely ‘cooks’…just Like Sterno Cooking Fuel…just Like "canned Heat"!..D. Jellinc

This is one of the strongest documents to feature Canned Heat in concert. However, contrary to the title, these performances are not from the Topanga Corral -- where the Heat were the house band off and on during the mid-1960s. Instead, it was later revealed the origins were actually from a Los Angeles club called the Kaleidoscope circa 1968. They most likely hail from the same batch of tapes that yielded the 4-plus-minute epic "Refried Boogie," which spread over Sides Three and Four on the Living the Blues (1968) two-LP package. The personnel includes Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals), and Aldolfo "Fito" de la Parra (drums). Indeed, these recordings were made prior to the rapid drug-related decline and eventual replacement of Vestine -- who is actually in top flight throughout -- with Harvey Mandel in mid-1969. Another factor in the chronology is the soulful interpretation of standard blues numbers, which would be incrementally abandoned for longer and more rambling psychedelic jams by the time of Live in Europe (1970). However, the difference between the early 1970s incarnation and this 'classic' lineup seems to lie primarily in their respective approaches. This seminal aggregate explores more traditional outlets such as the languid approach to B.B. King's "Sweet Sixteen," sporting some incendiary fretwork from the coupling of Wilson's smooth slide and Vestine's sinuous and punctuating leads. The former further exemplifies his bottleneck prowess on a rollicking reading of Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" that swings solid from tip to tail. As does the upbeat and slightly Creole-flavored "I Wish You Would," landing somewhere between the Yardbirds' aggressive take and Billy Boy Arnold's original. While interested parties are encouraged to find this set, caveat emptor, as the exact same material exists under a bevy of monikers. Most notable among these are Live at the Kaleidoscope 1969 (2000), Very Best of the Blues Years (2000), and as part of a two-fer with Vintage (1969) on Live at the Topanga Corral/Vintage (2001) -- which arguably boasts the best sound, having been remastered...L. Black Sabbath - Never Say Die! (1978) (Digipak Remaster 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After going their separate ways for a brief period following the emotionally taxing and drug-infested Technical Ecstasy tour, Black Sabbath and singer Ozzy Osbourne reconciled long enough to record 1978's Never Say Die! — an album whose varied but often unfocused songs perfectly reflected the band's uneasy state of affairs at the time. Even the surprisingly energetic title track, which seemed to kick things off with a promising bang, couldn't entirely mask the group's fading enthusiasm just beneath the surface after a few repeated listens. The same was true of half-hearted performances like "Shock Wave" and "Over to You," and there were several songs on the record that sound strangely disjointed, specifically "Junior's Eyes" and the synthesizer-doused "Johnny Blade" — as though their creation came in fits and starts, rather than through cohesive band interaction. But when it came to wild, stylistic departures, one's disappointing realization that the lurching, saxophone-led "Breakout" came from — and then went back to — absolutely nowhere was easily offset by the stunningly successful oddity that was "Air Dance." Arguably the most experimental song in Black Sabbath's entire canon, this uncharacteristically mild-mannered and effortlessly evocative ballad saw Tony Iommi's normally bullish guitar giving way to simply mesmerizing piano flourishes performed by leading session keyboardist Don Airey. If only it had represented a bold new direction (albeit one that die-hard fans would never have accepted) rather than just another sign of the band's quickly fraying sense of identity, Black Sabbath's original lineup may have found a way to save itself — but Never Say Die!'s incoherent musical aggregate in fact betrayed the harsh reality that it was indeed too late. So even though those same die-hard Black Sabbath fans and completists will likely find some redeeming value in Never Say Die! after all these years, the original lineup's final gasp will hold little interest to the average heavy metal fan...E. Rivadavia

Scorpions - Sting In The Tail

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After the release of their next album, STING IN THE TAIL, and a three-year mammoth tour, which will take them across five continents, one of the most successful rock bands in the world, SCORPIONS, will be ending their career. During their 40-year career, SCORPIONS sold over 100 million albums and received many awards, such as the World Music Award and several Echos--the German equivalent to the Grammy. Today they still play sold-out venues around the world. Not long ago, 152,000 South Americans came to 15 SCORPIONS concerts between Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City. Their song "Wind of Change" has become an anthem for the fall of the Iron Curtain. The tour will launch in the band's home country Germany in May. After that, they will be touring through North America before they continue their journey through five other continents until 2012.

Fleetwood Mac - English Rose (1969) (Remaster 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered reissue of this classic, late '60s U.S. collection of the Peter Green-led incarnation of the band. 12 tracks including 'Albatross', 'Black Magic Woman' and 'Stop Messin' 'Round'. 2007

For reasons that no one seems to recall in detail -- but for which we can be grateful -- when it was time to release a second Fleetwood Mac LP in America, producer Mike Vernon and the band didn't just send the existing Mr. Wonderful album across the Atlantic -- a little fine-tuning and retooling was in order. The band had just expanded by one member, to a quintet -- with the addition of guitarist Danny Kirwan -- by the end of 1968, whereas Mr. Wonderful represented them as a four-piece outfit. Additionally, the group had just toured the U.S. for the first time, as a quintet, playing to very enthusiastic audiences, and so there was some point to sending U.S. licensee Epic Records something extra, representing who they were at the start of 1969. And that became the English Rose album, offering three Kirwan-authored instrumentals, plus the hit U.K. single "Albatross," and also their previous single, "Black Magic Woman," which had been a British Top 40 hit (though it was unknown in the U.S., and preceded Santana's hit recording of it by almost two years). Half of Mr. Wonderful was still there, including the opener, "Stop Messin' Round" and "I've Lost My Baby," representing the stronger tracks from that record. Between the paring down of Mr. Wonderful and the addition of the single tracks, English Rose ended up being a stronger album than its predecessor, though without a hit single in America to drive sales and get it exposure, it barely brushed the Top 200 LP listings in the U.S. Strangely enough, despite the overlap with Mr. Wonderful, English Rose was released in England about six months later, probably to help make up for the loss of the group's contract (due to an oversight) by Blue Horizon..b. e Eder

Def Leppard - On Through the Night (1980) (Japan Mini LP 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

On Through the Night, Def Leppard's debut album, established the band as one of the leading lights of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. While possessing the tight, controlled attack of comrades Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Def Leppard was uninterested in the fantastic, menacing, and sometimes gothic themes of those bands; instead, On Through the Night is a collection of working-class hard rock anthems informed by the big, glittering hooks of glam rock. It may lack the detailed production and more pop-oriented songwriting of later efforts, but it's also arguably their heaviest album, and some Leppard fans prefer this sound...S. Huey

Schicke Führs Fröhling - Collected Works (2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Schicke Führs Fröhling is one of the most amazing prog acts to ever come out of Germany. Instilling their symphonic sound with elements of space rock, avant-garde electronics and fusion, their style turns out to be very rich and dynamic, combining light and shade in a perfect balance.

Eduard SCHICKE (drums, percussion, moog drum) and Heinz FRÖHLING (guitars, bass, synthesizer, mellotron), who had already been colleagues in the recently split SPEKTAKEL (one of the major German prog acts at the time), met keyboardist Gerard FÜHRS playing electric piano in a music store, sometime I nearly 1975. A few conversations led to instant chemistry, and furthermore, to the formation of the SCHICKE, FÜRHS & FRÖHLING trio. Six months later, they had a full repertoire of their own, on-stage experience (including the 1975 German Rock Festival in Munich) and a record deal signed with the Metronome label. Their debut album "Symphonic Pictures", an undisputed classic of German prog, was released in 1976, selling about 12,000 copies. The trio gained popularity among local prog fans, mostly for their stunning live performances, which many critics described as magic and overwhelming. Two more studio recordings followed, "Sunburst" (1977) and "Ticket to Everywhere" (1979). Though not as impressive as their debut, these latter albums show the band exploring their musical vision further, with a genuine will to evolve. You can also notice the band bearing a tendency toward a lightening of their sound, especially concerning the third album (the last one, indeed), which bears a bigger tendency toward appealing tunes and catchy arrangements that lean somewhat close to jazz-fusion and jazz-pop, with the symphonic factor not remaining the main focus anymore. In between, "Sunburst" still managed to capture the density and pompous atmospheres that had made the best of "Symphonic Pictures" while containing new rooms for jazz-rock oriented ideas. A year before SCHICKE quit the band, his partners had started working as a duo in parallel: with SCHICKE's leaving, the trio just dropped off. In fact, the "Ticket to Everywhere" was mostly conceived as a studio project more than as an effort by a 'live' band. In the early 90s, a double CD comprising all three albums plus two live tracks was released - the item was dedicated to the memory of Gerard FÜHRS, whose untimely passing occurred on Nov. 3rd, 1992.

Especially recommended to fans of ELOY, NOVALIS, PULSAR, everything symphonic with a strong spacey component and additional elements from jazz-rock and fusion: generally speaking, this band is a true classic of Germany's old school symphonic prog rock, and you can tell that their influence is noticeable in a number of 90s-era prog bands...C. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Back My Bullets (1976) (Digipak Remaster 2006)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Other records from the late, great, and original Lynyrd Skynyrd were more barroom raw (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd), indelibly rocking (Second Helping), and radio-ready (Street Survivors), but none was as endearing and cohesive as Gimme Back My Bullets). The 1975 LP, whose title referred not to ammunition, but to the Billboard term "#1 with a bullet," found the normally three-fisted Florida guitar army one axe short. But it allowed Gary Rossington and Allen Collins to work more intuitively on the songwriting chores with vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, while providing room to groove in the process. The results, though underrated in the band's epic pre-crash catalog, sweep into rock ("Trust," Searching"), blues ("I Got the Same Old Blues"), folk ("Every Mother's Son"), and country ("All I Can Do Is Write About It"). This deluxe edition includes alternate takes and live cuts. It also includes a bonus DVD featuring seven songs from the band's November 1975 performance on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test. The crystal-clear video shows Skynyrd in all their grandeur: raucous and polished, scorching and compassionate. And lights-out loud...S. Holter

Lynyrd Skynyrd begins to show signs of wear on their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. The band had switched producers, hiring Tom Dowd, the producer who served Atlantic's roster so well during the label's heyday. Unfortunately, he wasn't perfectly suited for Skynyrd, at least at this point in their history. The group had toured regularly since the release of their debut and it showed, not just in their performance, but in the songwriting of Ronnie Van Zant, who had been so consistent through their first three albums. Not to say that he was spent -- the title track was defiant as "All I Can Do Is Write About It" was affecting, while "Searching" was a good ballad and "Double Trouble" was a good rocker. These songs, however, were surrounded by songs that leaned to the dull side of (unlike those on Nuthin' Fancy) and Dowd's production didn't inject energy into the group's performances. This doesn't mean Gimme Back My Bullets is a bad record, since the group was still in fairly good shape and they had some fine songs, but coming after three dynamite albums, it was undoubtedly a disappointment. [Gimme Back My Bullets was released in a double-disc deluxe edition in 2006. The CD included live versions of "Double Trouble," "I Got the Same Old Blues," "Gimme Back My Bullets," and "Cry for the Bad Man," along with an acoustic version of "All I Can Do Is Write About It" and an alternate take of "Double Trouble," but the real attraction of the deluxe edition is the second disc, which is a DVD containing the original Skynyrd lineup live on the BBC television show Old Grey Whistle Test. Recorded on November 11, 1975, it's among the only surviving performance footage of the original band, and while the performance does not necessarily capture them at the height of their powers, it's a riveting seven-song set all the same, particularly since so little footage of this group exists. Because of this, this set is worth the time of any true fan.]...S. Erlewine

Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More From The Road (1976) (Deluxe Edit 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One year before the tragic plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd, main man Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, they added Gaines to the mix to revive the three-guitar sound that had worked so well for the group on tracks such as "Free Bird". In 1976 the band toured and released this double live album featuring such signature songs as "Gimme Three Steps", "Tuesday's Gone", "Saturday Night Special", "Sweet Home Alabama" and, of course, a blistering 11-and-a-half-minute version of "Free Bird". A cool cover of JJ Cale's "Call Me the Breeze" adds a little variety. It's easy to see why thismore… band dominated the rock charts in the 1970s.,,Bob Hope

One More For From The Road was recorded live during Skynyrd's sold-out three-night stand at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia in July, 1976. The ornate 4,600-seat landmark was packed to the rafters with a rabid, Confederate-flag-waving mob of Skynyrd faithful, who felt the group's thunderous rock 'n' roll hurricane blowing full force. The interplay between the newcomer Steve Gaines and veteran guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins inspired the whole band to new heights of frenzied virtuosity. In the eye of this Southern cyclone
stood vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, barefoot, calmly orchestrating the pandemonium surrounding him with ferocious growls, snarls, and wolf-whistles.

The three nights of live recording were a delirious celebration of Skynyrd's catalog, with the band playing al their classic hits and treating fans to scorching performances of "T For Texas," "Travellin' Man" and "Crossroads," none of which were available on their studio albums, along with such signature songs as "Gimme Three Steps", "Tuesday's Gone", "Saturday Night Special", "Sweet Home Alabama" and, of course, a blistering 11-and-a-half-minute version of "Free Bird".The recordings of Skynyrd at the Fox captured the group at the pinnacle of their powers with the best performances from the three nights being picked for release. The resulting live album was the definitive work of the band's career.

One More For From The Road became Skynyrd's breakthrough record. The double-live set was released on September 13, 1976, and immediately rocketed into the Top 10, becoming the group's fastest selling LP ever. It would soon join Pronounced and Second Helping as Skynyrd's third million-selling record, making them the only other Southern band up to that time, besides the Allman Brothers, to have reached platinum status. To date, One More From The Road has gone triple platinum, with more than three million albums sold.

The Hollies - Butterfly (1967) (1978)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This late 1967 album found the Hollies making some modest adjustments to the psychedelic era: occasionally trippy studio effects, a sitar on their most psychedelic track ("Maker"), songs that didn't always deal with boy-girl relationships. In fact, however, the group's focus remained where it usually was: modest but pleasing, similar-sounding catchy tunes with high harmonies and strumming guitars. It's not remarkable or essential, but it's certainly pleasant enough, and a bit better than their earlier 1967 LP, Evolution, with some of their better album-only cuts ("Postcard" , "Pegasus, "Butterfly"," "Away Away Away"). With some track alterations, the record was issued in the U.S. as Dear Eloise/King Midas in Reverse; the U.K. edition, as collectors should note, has a few songs that were never released in the States ("Pegasus," "Elevated Observations?," "Try It").

Steely Dan - Collected (3CD Remaster Set)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Import three CD set. Throughout the '70s, musical trends would come and go, but Steely Dan always remained true to their own blend of Jazz, Pop and Rock. The songs were clever and melodic, the musicianship was top notch and the production was stellar. The band, led by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, were adored by musicians and non-musicians alike and even the critics eventually warmed up to them. While the band called it a day in 1980 (reuniting a decade and a half later), their fanbase continued to grow and their original albums became prized possessions in record collections everywhere. This triple disc collection contains 47 tracks including hits and album tracks released 1972-80. Features 'Do It Again', 'Peg', 'Reelin' In The Years', 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number', 'FM', and many others.

Kaki King - Junior

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Singer & guitarist extraordinaire, Kaki King, has spent the past decade gathering critical acclaim and fan admiration for her unparalleled guitar skills. Not only is she the first ever female named a "Guitar God" by Rolling Stone, but she also received a Golden Globe nomination for her contribution to the musical score of Sean Penn's 2007 film, Into the Wild. That same year, King appeared in August Rush as the protagonists guitar double, performed on the Foo Fighters' Grammy® winning album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, as well as opened for them during their Australia tour. Now at the start of the decade, Kaki reaches new heights with her Rounder Records debut album, Junior. This collection of songs delivers twists-and-turns: lyrically from exuberance and anger to heartbreaking melancholy; and sonically from experimental pieces to accessible pop. While the dazzling musicianship King has been renowned for still remains, Junior showcases her further maturation as a well-rounded artist, demonstrated by the humbling vocals displayed on this recording. Produced by Malcolm Burn, (Patti Smith, Emmylou Harris) Junior defies categorization and expectation; making it a recording to be reckoned with.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Collected (3CD Set 2008)

This mammoth three-disc U.K. compilation features 50 tracks from "classic rock" staples Creedence Clearwater Revival, including "Long as I Can See the Light," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Lookin' out My Back Door," and "Proud Mary." Listeners would be hard-pressed to find anything resembling a glaring omission here, as the compilers have done a fine job including every high point from the band's short but incredibly bountiful run, making this an excellent choice for the Creedence newbie...L. Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts (1975)(10-track Remaster 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Time Honoured Ghosts continued Barclay James Harvest's development away from the orchestral sweep of the earlier albums, although there's a little more filler than usual here. "In My Life" emphasizes BJH's penchant for ghostly descending vocal choruses and features an angular lead guitar part that would be recycled several years later in "Loving Is Easy." "Titles" remains memorably catchy in spite of its faintly irritating musical parlor trick of lyrics created entirely from Beatles song titles. "Moongirl" in particular demonstrates how Stewart Wooly Wolstenholme's approach to keyboards differs from most prog rock bands (with the exception, perhaps, of Pink Floyd); by subtly combining a variety of background textures (Mellotron, harpsichord, organ, piano), he acts as a foil to set off the more obvious roles played by the vocals and lead guitar. [Universal International's 2003 U.K. edition included one bonus track.]...P. Collins

ELO - Face The Music (1975) (12-track Digipak Remaster 2006)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Face the Music was sort of ELO's return to a more basic sound after the ornate (and highly commercially successful) experimentation of Eldorado, and that's what's on display on this remastered edition as well -- everything is in high relief and all of the sound richly detailed, but it's the core band sound that stands out most, amid the rich, multi-layered production on "Fire on High" and "Waterfall." With some layers of compression and the limitations of a previous lackluster digital transfer removed, Jeff Lynne's voice now sounds almost sweetly textured on the latter number, and that points to one of the most important benefits of this kind of upgrade -- yes the mixes are made more transparent and the instruments more vivid along with everything else, but one of the subtler aspects is that the nuances of the singing, and whatever warmth there is in a voice, even in one as highly processed as Lynne's, can be heard in some of these settings, it's brought out, and that's as important in the listening as the removal of any noise or compression. Even a piece as familiar as "Evil Woman," which has been played and heard as much as any tune ELO ever cut, achieves a bracing freshness in these circumstances. What's more, the volume on the playback of this CD is something that one will have to monitor very carefully -- the louder parts of this disc could make one a real nuisance in an apartment building, even one with thick prewar walls and floors; not that the softer, more lyrical strains of "One Summer Dream" don't benefit also, but those won't break your lease. The bonus tracks are a little leaner here -- the "Fire on High Intro" is more a curiosity piece than anything else, whereas the stripped down mix of "Evil Woman" deserved an airing long before this; it's still the song, and even still the record, but with the basic elements moved to the fore, and in all likelihood it could have been about as big a hit as the more lushly finished version that was issued -- by itself, it's worth the price of the CD. There's also the U.S. single mix of "Strange Magic," to fill in that picture, and an instrumental mix of "Waterfall" to close out this special edition of the original album. The notes are thoroughly detailed and informative, and it's difficult to imagine any ELO fan missing out on this edition of Face the Music...B. Eder

Epic/Legacy has now given us this stellar re-mastered edition of FACE THE MUSIC, and it's a real treasure. It's one of those documents that vividly illustrate why ELO leader Jeff Lynne is considered on of the leading lights in popular music history. The original 1975 classic by ELO is a bracing collection of some pretty hot tunes; on this re-mastered edition, these songs sound better than ever, and the graphics are wonderfully expanded, with a booklet full of rare photos and insightful commentary by Lynne and ELO historian Rob Caiger...D. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors (1977) (2CD Digipak Deluxe 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sometimes, expanded Deluxe Editions don't seem to have much of a purpose outside of marketing: the second disc will contain a clearinghouse of B-sides and remixes or a live show, not adding much to the story of the original album. That's not the case with the Deluxe Edition of Lynyrd Skynyrd's final album, Street Survivors -- it's a Deluxe Edition that fills out the final chapter of the original band's career by presenting the complete original version of the album, recorded with legendary producer Tom Dowd at Criteria Studios but scrapped when the group's live sound engineer Kevin Elson argued that these versions sounded lifeless. The album was subsequently rejiggered with a mix of re-recording, additional production, and remixing, plus the addition of a couple of older songs to the record ("One More Time" dates from 1971 sessions at Muscle Shoals, while "I Know a Little" is a song guitarist Steve Gaines had before he joined Skynyrd in 1976), all of which helped turn the album into arguably the band's best. The instincts of Elson -- who was supported by Gaines, as revealed in the excellent liner notes by Ron O'Brien on this set -- turn out to be correct, as the Criteria version of Street Survivors is a bit tight and stiff, sounding more like a typical professional arena rock production from 1977 than the finished set, which makes it interesting from an archeological perspective at the very least. Skynyrd do sound well-honed, hitting all the notes precisely, but they lack the full-blown, red-blooded roar that made the original so invigorating. All of this explains why the album was tweaked considerably before its release, and a Deluxe Edition like this serves the historical record well by preserving this -- even if it merely confirms conventional wisdom, it's good to hear it first-hand, plus there is only a limited amount of music recorded by the original band, so it's hard not to value whatever was left behind. And this lineup of Skynyrd was certainly a great band, something that is apparent even on these slightly stilted originals, especially because they're not all slightly stilted: there's an extended guitar workout on the original version of "That Smell," a cheerful blues shuffle called "Georgia Peaches" that didn't make the final cut (it did appear on the previous expanded 2001 reissue), and "Jacksonville Kid," Ronnie Van Zant's brilliant rewrite of Merle Haggard's "Honky Tonk Night Time Man" that is the last song he wrote. There is another set of final recordings here, too: five cuts from a live California show the band gave in August 1977, two months before the release of Street Survivors and before the plane crash that claimed the lives of Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. These are the last known recordings of the band, and while the audio is a little rough, the group sounds ferocious. Given the strength of these live cuts, it's once again hard not to wish that the band had not been struck down by tragedy, but this Deluxe Edition honors Lynyrd Skynyrd's legacy by offering every aspect of their last year as a band, from the raw live shows to the overly polished original album to the glorious final version of Street Survivors.
