The Police - Greatest Hits (1992) (SHM CD Remaster 2008)

Depending on whose report you believe, the Police recongregated in 1985 to either begin work on their sixth studio album or a greatest-hits collection that was to include all new, reworked versions of the hits. Neither ever materialized due to hostility between the members, and when all the trio could show for its work was an insipid remake of "Don't Stand So Close to Me," the Police decided to call it a day. So instead of following the original plan, A&M issued Their Greatest Hits, which included 12 original versions of their hits plus the new track, titled "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86," which prevents the collection from being definitive. Still, the Police were responsible for some of the greatest rock tunes of all time, and all 11 originals are superb: "Roxanne," "Walking on the Moon," "Invisible Sun," "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "King of Pain," the title track, and others. The only criticism is the absence of other hits/videos/radio faves such as "Synchronicity II" and "Demolition Man."...G. Prato

Steve Miller Band - Bingo!

Bingo! is the Steve Miller Band's first studio record in 17 years. Thematically, it's a look back at the the electric blues and R&B that influenced him as a young man. Issued on his own Space Cowboy imprint, is also the final recorded appearance of blues harmonica great Norton Buffalo who passed away in 2009. Blues classics by B.B. King, Lowell Fulsom, Otis Rush, Howlin' Wolf, Earl King, Jimmy Reed, and Jessie Hill are here, along with three selections by contemporary bluesman Jimmie Vaughan. What all of these tracks all have in common is Miller's signature approach: he is a stellar guitarist who has no need to show off, a tight arranger, and an intuitive modern producer (with help from Andy Johns). These 14 tunes (all under four minutes) actually extend the electric blues tradition. While paying tribute to his heroes and contemporaries, there are also nods to his own history as a recording artist. Check Vaughan's "Hey Yeah," with wah-wah guitars and killer solo breaks in the intro and verses. Miller's and Buffalo's harmonies are tight, and evoke the early fusion of blues with psychedelic rock (ŕ la the earliest Steve Miller Band). One can also hear traces of Jimi Hendrix's production style in the tune as well as in his stellar version of Rush's "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)," that adds some gorgeous Latin percussion -- courtesy of Michael Carabello and Adrian Areas --to the silvery, reverb-laden guitar work. Fulsom's "Tramp" has that trademark opening chord, but the rest is pure Miller. He plays sparely, but with swagger aplenty, the funky shuffle at its heart played by rhythm guitar ace Kenny Lee is deep in the pocket; the vocal trade-off between Sonny Charles and Miller is priceless. The lone ballad on the set is the Vaughan/Nile Rodgers' tune "Sweet Soul Vibe." With Joe Satriani guesting (he appears on "Rock Me Baby" as well) it touches on gospel, soul, and modern R&B. Miller's and Satriani's alternate leads are deceptively sweet, but they feel more like knives being sharpened and carried confidently in sheaths. Earl King's "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" is a burning solo workout and takes the party jam into an entirely new musical dimension. Vocally, Miller touches on his '70s persona, but it's only a glance; the rest is burning blues. There are also four bonus tracks, the most notable are readings of Elmore James' "Look on Yonder Wall" -- with a killer vocal from Charles -- and the closer, Roosevelt Sykes' "Drivin' Wheel," with Miller's filthiest guitar work of the set. This is a welcome return for Miller, and a must for modern electric blues fans...T. Jurek

Rainbow - Rising (1975)(SHM CD Remaster 2008)

I can still remember hearing for the first time the intro to "Tarot Woman" it`s one of the greatest intros to an album ever. Every musician on this album turns in a blinder add to that the fact that there are great songs to it`s a sure fire recipe for success. Put simply this is Blackmores & Rainbows finest moment. Blackmore would never again scale the heights of guitar playing that he achieved on this album. Cozy Powells drums are Thunderous, Dio`s vocals saw above the power gliding perfectley over the songs. This album is the blue print for all that was to come, & in a strange way more so thanmore… anything that Purple did. Want to hear a piece of Heavey Metal history ? Then buy this now...D. Jellinc

Jethro Tull - Original Masters (1985)(Gold Disc Remaster 1998)

Jethro Tull is one of those groups for whom I resist the notion of a greatest hits collection, probably because they had two albums ("Thick as a Brick" and "Passion Play") which were created as unfieid works. Even on "Aqualung" there is more thematic unit than you usually find on Rock albums, even when you are dealing with Progressive Rock, so "Original Masters" strikes me as strange as listening to one movement from a Mozart symphony. This collection covers some of Jethro Tull's best work from 1969-1975, and I would certainly agree with everybody else who has commented that the lineup could certainly be better given what is available. I would have gone for "Bouree," "Wondering Aloud" and the Marcus Purdy sequence from "Passion Play" instead of "Sweet Dream," "Witches Promise" and "Life's A Long Song." Ask me again tomorrow and I will probably have a different answer. So if you are already an Ian Anderson enthusiast, then "Original Masters" will give you an urge to go listen to your favorite Jethro Tull albums again. If you are familiar with Jethro Tull mainly from what few songs received heavy AM radio play, then these songs may well whet your appetite for the group's more ambitious music. Now, if somebody could just explain to me how we come to live in a world where the music from "Thick As A Brick" is used to sell cars? Apparently the executives who Okayed that ad do not remember what is in the gutter when your love is in the sink. Amazing. Just remember to go check out the albums.

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk(1979) (2CD Deluxe Edition 2004)

If your personal turmoil and professional musical struggles suddenly yielded more success and money than you could ever imagine, what would you do? A lesser '70s rock band recorded Don't Look Back; Fleetwood Mac made Tusk. Whether it was a firm, middle-finger salute to the weighty commercial expectations foisted upon them in the wake of Rumours' burgeoning successes or a restless creative response to the then-shifting tides of pop music taste, this 1979 20-track double album remains the most consistently adventurous project any incarnation of the veteran band ever attempted. This remastered, doublemore…-disc deluxe edition's 21-track bonus disc of demos and outtakes seems to argue for the latter, new wave-fueled influences, bringing together a dizzying range of performances that underscore everything from Lindsey Buckingham's Brian Wilson jones (the warm, inventive harmonies of the band's dreamy outtake of the Beach Boys chestnut "Farmer's Daughter") to Christine McVie's knack for jazz-bluesy heat ("One More Time," which ultimately became "Over and Over") and pop hooks ("Think About Me") and Stevie Nicks's pop-goddess hoodoo (deliciously spare, fragile versions of "Sara," "Storms," and "Sisters of the Moon"). Most of the demos and outtakes here are imbued with a funky, loose-limbed spirit that offer new insight into their creation. But, as on the finished album, it's Buckingham's endlessly inventive creative spirit that dominates, from the chunky-rhythmed "Can't Walk out of Here" and "Out on the Road" (which became "The Ledge" and "That's Enough For Me," respectively) to three separate early recordings that chronicle the evolution of "I Know I'm Not Wrong." Rumours may be ubiquitous; Tusk remains unique...Robert Hoffnung

Rainbow - Long Live Rock 'n' Roll (1978) (SHM CD Remaster 2008)

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic album from the British Hard Rockers led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, originally released in 1978. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

Long Live Rock 'n' Roll may be singer Ronnie James Dio's last album with Rainbow, but at least he went out on a high note. While the material is not quite as strong as on the previous studio effort, Rising, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll maintains the momentum the band had built up. "Kill the King" had been previously heard on the live On Stage record, but here it sounds more fully realized. Also, the title track from the album stands as one of the best songs the band did, not to mention a noble sentiment. The chugging "L.A. Connection" is another highlight. As with all of their first four albums, this one was produced by Martin Birch (who produced everyone from Blue Öyster Cult to Wayne County), and he really knows how to get the best out of the band by this point. The result is that the songs couldn't sound any better, so even if some of the material isn't quite up to their best, the album is still very cohesive, steady, and, ultimately, satisfying. This would turn out to be the last great album Rainbow would ever make, although they did enjoy a great deal of chart success in the post-Dio era...G. Ginsberg

Mamas & Papas - 16 of their Greatest Hits (1970)(1998)

Husband and wife team John and Michelle Phillips formed the The Mamas & the Papas with Denny Doherty after the band they were in, The New Journeymen, split. Denny's pal Cass Elliot, who had sung with Doherty in The Mugwumps, joined them and together they decamped to the Virgin Isles. While there, John wrote many of the songs which would find their way to vinyl. Eventually, they returned to California and after initial trepidation, Cass joined the group officially. They signed with Lou Adler and recorded "California Dreamin'" which became a huge hit in 1965. If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears was released in 1966, and "Monday, Monday" became their first and only chart-topper. Around this time Michelle and Denny revealed that they had been having an affair and John fired her, furious at her infidelity. Jill Gibson, a girlfriend of their manager, took her place in 1966, learning all of Michelle's parts and replacing her on the album artwork for the second album The Mamas & the Papas. However, Michelle returned to the group towards the end of recording and two of the tracks featured her voice instead. "I Saw Her Again" and "Words of Love" were both Top 5 hits for the group. Their successful third album Deliver was released in 1967, but the atmosphere in the band was poor, an ongoing result of the affair. Efforts to record a fourth full-length were hampered by the continuing tension. Cass actually quit the band before a record could be finished. However they were contractually obliged to release a fourth album and so, after a greatest hits compilation filled the gap, The Papas & the Mamas (1968) was released, to which Cass made her usual contribution. The band split in 1968, after which Cass went on to a have successful solo career. However, the record company decided that they were, as a band, actually contracted to produce a fifth album. As a result they regrouped briefly and recorded People Like Us which was released in 1971 and proved to be the least successful of all their albums.

Nazareth - Sound Elixir (1983) (Digipak Remaster 2003)

2003 digitally remastered reissue of the Scottish hard-rocker's 1983 album includes five bonus tracks, 'On The Run' (B-Side), 'Where Are You Now' (Alternate Edit), 'Milk & Honey' (Alternate Edit), 'Whippin' Boy' (Extended Version) & 'All Nite Radio' (Radio Edit)

After Nazareth's 12-year association with A&M Records ended in 1982, the group signed with MCA Records, and shortly thereafter, they released what would be their last major-label collection on new material, Sound Elixir. By 1983, when this recording was first issued on MCA, Nazareth was clearly declining commercially and artistically. Yet, like every Nazareth recording, there are plenty of bright spots that fans of the band should enjoy. Highlights include powerful opener "Why Don't You Read the Book" and "Rain on the Window." While there's nothing really bad about Sound Elixir, it's very removed from the best Nazareth material of the '70s, both in terms of musical intentions and also technical and artistic execution. [Elixir reappeared via Eagle in 2003, this time with the B-side "On the Run" and various alternate and extended edits.]...Vincent Jeffries

When you think of Bon Jovi you think of the album Slippery When Wet, when you think of E.L.O you think of the album Out Of The Blue. When you think of Nazareth you do NOT think of the album Sound Elixr, and that is a travisty.Recorded in 1983, Nazareth's 14th studio album never recieved an official U.K release due to a record label dispute and this undoubtedly cost Nazareth a hugh ammount of success with this record. Billy Rankin was brought into the band for this album and just like other Nazareth albums featuring Rankin (No Jive and Move Me), he proves to be insparational in giving a newmore… edge to the songwriting. Certainly for this record Nazareth moved away from the bluesy rock of their previous releases and went for a more A.O.R approach; they pulled it off brilliantly.Tracks like All Nite Radio and Rain On The Window could have been penned in a sleasy smoke filled bar in New York, while the stunning vocals on Whippin' Boy and Where Are You Now will just take your breath away. Mix it all up with tracks such as the amusing Local Still and the seemingly autobiographal Back Room Boys and you have an album of such quality that you will wonder how it never sold millions or won awards. If Led Zepplin or Deep Purple had done this album, it would have been a hugh seller.Dunfirmline's finest should have had a big hit on their hands with this one if circumstances hadn't conspired against them, but this album will still be in some demand long after bigger selling albums are confined to the bargain bin in supermarkets. Don't take my word for it though, get yourself a copy and see what you've been missing.

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (1975) (Remaster Edit 2004)

Given their monumental legacy, it's hard to imagine that the so-called "classic edition" of Fleetwood Mac essentially came together casually over chips and margaritas at an L.A. eatery; the then-obscure duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks (whose own mid-'70s debut album had initially gone almost straight to the cut-out bins) became the crucial axis of the legendary band without so much as a formal audition. As the eponymous title suggests, the 1975 Mac realignment seems like a fresh start, though tracks like Christine McVie's smooth-jazz inflected "Warm Ways" hearken back to the Bob Welchmore…/Bare Trees/Heroes Are Hard to Find era. But it's Buckingham's compelling, updated take on '60s California folk-pop, informed by the mystique of Nicks's proto-New Age song-sorceress presumptions, that breathed new life into the veteran, chameleonic band on now-familiar songs like "Monday Morning" and "Rhiannon." His chemistry with McVie is no less powerful, yielding such Mac staples as their collaboration "World Turning" and suffusing her "Over My Head" with nervous, insistent guitar rhythms. This deluxe, remastered edition features the significantly different single mixes of "Say You Love Me," "Rhiannon," "Over My Head," and "Blue Letter" (the latter previously unissued), as well as the moody, also unreleased studio workout "Jam #2." Parke Puterbaugh's newly penned liner notes offer concise, thoughtful insights into the genesis of one of rock's greatest, if most unlikely, rebirths...Robert Hoffnung

Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (1975) (SHM CD Remaster 2008)

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic album from the British Hard Rockers led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, originally released in 1975. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

Perhaps the first example of "dragon rock" -- a style perfected by bands like Iron Maiden and Dio in the early to mid-'80s -- was Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, a 1975 collection from the guitarist's first post-Deep Purple project. Fittingly enough, a young Ronnie James Dio provides the goblin-like frontman presence required by the increasingly Baroque Blackmore. The young Dio is at his best when he fully gives in to his own and Blackmore's medieval fantasy leanings in hard-rocking tracks like "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" and "Man on the Silver Mountain." The dark, trudging doom rock of "Self Portrait" most clearly showcases what they were capable of. The album's ponderous lyrics are occasionally punctuated by poetic phrases such as "crossbows in the firelight." Although Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow provides a few listenable tracks, its primary value is historical. Look to Rainbow's next album, Rainbow Rising (1976), to grasp the heavy metal potential that is only hinted at here. David Kent-Abbott

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd (1973) (Remaster Edit 2001)

I got turned on to Lynyrd Skynyrd when I heard 'Sweet Home Alabama' for the first time. I thought I would buy this album to see what they were like over the course of an album. They are awesome! There are no two ways about it, 'Pronounced' is brilliant. It has it all, great songs, great riffs and one of the most amazing rock songs ever written in 'Freebird'. The guitar solo is longer than most songs!!! I would highly recommend this album to anyone who loves the guitar as an instrument!! Truly amazing!

It's the birth of a great band that birthed an entire genre with this album.

Procol Harum - Shine On Brightly (1968) (40th Anniversary Remaster 2009)

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the British band's 1968 sophomore album including 11 bonus tracks. With the success of Shine On Brightly, musical comparisons were being drawn between Procol Harum and The Band. Both groups relied on the same line-up of organ, piano, guitar, bass and drums. And with the release of their own Music From Big Pink in the summer of 1968, The Band were finally being recognized as more than just Bob Dylan's backing group. Some perceptive critics noted the influence of Procol Harum on Big Pink; while Shine On Brightly - a far more assured and confident sounding album than their debut - confirmed how much further Procol themselves had developed. 21 tracks.

Rainbow - On Stage (1977) (SHM-CD Remaster 2008)

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic album from the British Hard Rockers led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, originally released in 1977. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008.

Breaking with '70s heavy metal tradition by releasing a live album after only two studio efforts (you're supposed to have three before the live one), Rainbow served up this double platter in 1977. On Stage is full of great songs and playing, but somehow it lacks some of the excitement that existed at those early Ritchie Blackmore concerts. The production is just kind of flat. That doesn't change the fact that there is some great stuff to be found here and nowhere else, such as the side-long version of "Mistreated," from Deep Purple's Burn. The also epic version of "Catch the Rainbow" contains some awesome guitar work but is too long for its own good. In another break with metal tradition, the album kicks off with "Kill the King," a blazing rocker from their next platter, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. The idea of opening your show with a song no one knows is very foreign to both heavy metal and double live albums. On the band's classic song, "Man on the Silver Mountain," Ronnie Dio cries out in his over-the-top vocal finale, "I'm the man, I'm the man, I'm the man....we're all the maaaaaaaaaannnn." That is unconsciously funny enough to make the disc worthwhile all by itself...G. Ginsberg

Eagles - Eagles Live (1980)(Digipak Remaster 2005)

Japanese remastered reissue packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve.

Although Eagles Live includes four tracks recorded in the fall of 1976 (thus allowing for the inclusion of departed singer Randy Meisner on "Take It to the Limit"), the bulk of the album comes from the end of the Eagles' 1980 tour, and it reflects their late concert repertoire, largely drawn from Hotel California and The Long Run. The occasional early song such as "Desperado" and "Take It Easy" turn up, as do two extended selections from Joe Walsh's solo career, "Life's Been Good" and "All Night Long." Walsh introduces some live variations to his material; the rest of the Eagles seem determined to re-create the studio versions of their songs in concert. The previously unrecorded rendition of Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" is welcome, and the album would have benefited from more such surprises...W. Ruhlmann

Uriah Heep - Greatest Hits (2CD Remaster 2008)

russian pirate release - great compilation

Their debut album, Very 'eavy... Very 'umble (which was self-titled in the United States), introduced a heavy organ and guitar-driven sound, with David Byron's theatrical, dynamic vocals soaring above thunderous sonic backgrounds, although acoustic and jazz elements also featured in the mix. The album's title references the signature phrase of the Dickens character Uriah Heep ("very 'umble") from the novel David Copperfield from which the band took its name.

Mötley Crüe - Dr. Feelgood (1989) (2 CD Remaster 2009)

Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe two discs edition of the Metal band's career-defining album including a bonus nine track CD which contains demos and live tracks. Originally released in 1989, Dr. Feelgood' sold six million copies in the U.S. alone and was certified multi-platinum. This deluxe set comprises the 11-track album, which features guest appearances from Steven Tyler, Bryan Adams, Robin Zander & Rick Neilsen [Cheap Trick], Skid Row and others. Includes the classic singles 'Dr Feelgood', 'Kickstart My Heart', 'Without You', 'Don't Go Away Mad [Just Go Away]' and 'Same Ol' Situation [S.O.S.]'.

Mötley Crüe's albums were a lot like episodes of Married With Children in the sense that they may not be great works of art but can be darn entertaining. With Bob Rock serving as producer, the L.A. headbangers savor the joys of trashy, unapologetically decadent fun on Dr. Feelgood -- an album that makes no pretense at being anything else. While nothing here is quite as commanding as "Shout at the Devil," "Wild Side," or "Live Wire," such hook-oriented MTV smashes as "Kickstart My Heart," the amusing "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)," and the title song are infectious and hard to resist, and helped make this the best-selling Mötley Crüe album ever, as well as providing their first Top Ten singles. Unfortunately, the album would be lead singer Vince Neil's last album with the band. Neil's departure -- and pop-metal's decline in popularity in the mid-'90s -- proved to be severe blows to Mötley Crüe. [Eleven Seven's 20th anniversary expanded edition was issued in 2009.] ...A. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (1969) (SHM CD Remaster 2008)

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this absolute classic album from the Rock legends, originally released in 1969. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

This is an album that will be remembered as one of the defining moments of heavy metal and rock music in general. Along with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin launched the heavy metal genre. Their second album cemented that claim even more with Whole Lotta Love, but Dazed And Confused from LZ I is probably one of the first songs in rock history to take that direction. As a blues derivative album, this is a gem with many outstanding moments. Even though the band cannot deny that they stole many of the moments on this album from other artists, (Willie Dixon sued them successfully for not crediting him for You Shook Me and I Can't Quit You Baby, while Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and even the main riff on Dazed and Confused were lifted from someone else's songs, though I can't recall whom now.) the band had a delivery and distinct sound that secured a spot for them in rock history. If this had been the only album they ever recorded, they would've been remembered for it alone. Many other artists that came later cite this as one of their favorites and a major influence on their own music. This is as seminal as albums come. New to Zeppelin? No problem... great place to start...R. Calivhornia

Hoelderlin - Rare Birds (1977) (Digipak Remaster 2007)

Hoelderlin were a German band who started out firmly with a prog-folk styling, but by their 3rd release (Clowns and Clouds) gave in to a more symphonic-prog direction (some could say that they took the easy way out by changing to this style). 'Rare Birds' is their 4th release and really hits this prog listener somewhere deep inside. The main keyboard utilised on this LP is a string synth, and IMO, it is used to great effect and compliments the arrangements perfectly (i.e. - it wouldn't sound the same with a mellotron, believe it or not !). The production is quite clear and well balanced - very professional. Almost straight away, the terrific opening track, 'Haktik Intergalaktik', starts with an immediately noticeable odd-time riff, with lovely viola playing from Christoph (Nops) Noppeney, and a tight, precise rhythm section (the Bass-guitar sports a lovely tone) - we are up and away. Quaint vocals from Nops, great progressions throughout, a brief interlude which I find is most touching, and great guitaring till the end. 'Sky-Lift' offers us a laid-back, fusiony feel with some tight playing all around. 'Before You Lay Down/Rough and Thorny' is again a smooth, jammy piece with a most blissed out end section. Side 2 begins with the title song, 'Rare Bird', and is a beautiful example of 'head music', the song is built around piano and string synth, with minimal drumming (just a bass drum, from memory), totally mellow, deep and profound, with a dramatic middle section - very dreamy, without question. 'Necronomicon' is a superb instrumental, starting out with an almost sinister undercurrent, and giving way to some stormy playing - especially a great semi-tone riff in 5/4 in the middle. The closing track, 'Sun Rays' is probably the weakest composition on offer here, and quite lengthy, but still holds the attention. Overall, a fantastic album from these highly skilled and talented musicians, and quite worthy of ttention...progarchives.com

David Bowie - Pinups (1973) (Digipak Remaster 2007)

Pin Ups fits into David Bowie's output roughly where Moondog Matinee (which, strangely enough, appeared the very same month) did into the Band's output, which is to say that it didn't seem to fit in at all. Just as a lot of fans of Levon Helm et al. couldn't figure where a bunch of rock & roll and R&B covers fit alongside their output of original songs, so Bowie's fans — after enjoying a string of fiercely original LPs going back to 1970's The Man Who Sold the World — weren't able to make too much out of Pin Ups' new recordings of a brace of '60s British hits.

Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane had established Bowie as perhaps the most fiercely original of all England's glam rockers (though Marc Bolan's fans would dispute that to their dying day), so an album of covers didn't make any sense and was especially confusing for American fans — apart from the Easybeats' "Friday on My Mind" and the Yardbirds' "Shapes of Things," little here was among the biggest hits of their respective artists' careers, and the Who's "I Can't Explain" and "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere" were the only ones whose original versions were easily available or played very often on the radio; everything else was as much a history lesson, for Pink Floyd fans whose knowledge of that band went back no further than Atom Heart Mother, or into Liverpool rock (the Merseys' "Sorrow"), as it was a tour through Bowie's taste in '60s music. The latter was a mixed bag stylistically, opening with the Pretty Things' high-energy Bo Diddley homage "Rosalyn" and segueing directly into a hard, surging rendition of Them's version of Bert Berns' "Here Comes the Night," filled with crunchy guitars; "I Wish You Would" and "Shapes of Things" were both showcases for Bowie's and Mick Ronson's guitars, and "See Emily Play" emphasized the punkish (as opposed to the psychedelic) side of the song. "Sorrow," which benefited from a new saxophone break, was actually a distinct improvement over the original, managing to be edgier and more elegant all at once, and could easily have been a single at the time, and Bowie's slow version of "I Can't Explain" was distinctly different from the Who's original — in other words, Pin Ups was an artistic statement, of sorts, with some thought behind it, rather than just a quick album of oldies covers to buy some time, as it was often dismissed as being. In the broader context of Bowie's career, Pin Ups was more than an anomaly — it marked the swan song for the Spiders from Mars and something of an interlude between the first and second phases of his international career; the next, beginning with Diamond Dogs, would be a break from his glam rock phase, going off in new directions. It's not a bad bridge between the two, and it has endured across the decades — and the CD remasterings since the late '90s have made it worth discovering all over again...B. Eder

Black Sabbath - The Dio Years (2007)(16-track Remaster 2007)

Honoring the time Ronnie Dio spent with the band, Black Sabbath's hits "Neon Knights", "Lady Evil", and "Die Young" are featured on this compilation spanning 1980-2006. Rhino Remasters '2007, includes 3 new songs.

The original lineup of Black Sabbath possesses such a mythic quality that it's easy to overlook how far they slid by the time Ozzy Osbourne up and left the band...or how far they rebounded after they hired Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio as his replacement. Countless compilations over the years have preserved the initial part of the story line -- celebrating the innovations of the first four albums with a near fetishistic quality -- but there has never been a good retrospective concerning the Dio years until Rhino released the aptly titled The Dio Years in early 2007. True, the Dio years didn't last all that long -- the singer joined in 1980 for Heaven & Hell, then lasted through one more studio album, the following year's Mob Rules, before departing under a shroud of controversy after 1982's botched live album Live Evil -- but Dio had a powerful impact upon the band and its legacy; these were the last years that Sabbath exerted pull as an active band, and after his departure they stumbled through various singers over the next decade before intermittently reuniting with Ozzy in the '90s. The Dio Years proves that during his brief time with the band, Dio did help Sabbath make music that could hold its own with some of the classic lineup's finest moments. With Dio as a frontman, the band was harder, nastier, and a little faster than the slow sludge of the early Sabbath records, but it fit in nicely with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal at the beginning of the '80s and it's aged very well. Some of it can sound silly -- Dio's lyrical obsessions always do -- but this is harder, heavier, better music than either Technical Ecstasy or Never Say Die! Anybody who's refused to give this latter-day incarnation of the band the time of day might find this compilation revelatory...S. Erlewine

Doors - Morrison Hotel (1970)(Gold Disc Remaster 2009)

Originally released in 1970, Morrison Hotel was The Doors' second to last album and it opened a new chapter in the band's musical history. Gone were the psychedelic trimmings of the first two albums and the commercialism of the last two. The blues leaning affair is distinctly stripped down and edgier, making it all the way to #4 on the U.S. charts and #12 in the U.K. The album also contains two bonus tracks, Doors all-time favorites, "Waiting for the Sun" and "Roadhouse Blues"

The Doors returned to crunching, straightforward hard rock on Morrison Hotel, an album that, despite yielding no major hit singles, returned them to critical favor with hip listeners. An increasingly bluesy flavor began to color the songwriting and arrangements, especially on the party'n'booze anthem "Roadhouse Blues." Airy mysticism was still present on "Waiting for the Sun," "Queen of the Highway," and "Indian Summer"; "Ship of Fools" and "Land Ho!" struck effective balances between the hard rock arrangements and the narrative reach of the lyrics. "Peace Frog" was the most political and controversial track, documenting the domestic unrest of late-'60s America before unexpectedly segueing into the restful ballad "Blue Sunday." "The Spy," by contrast, was a slow blues that pointed to the direction that would fully blossom on L.A. Woman. [This 40th anniversary reissue contains bonus remixes of "Roadhouse Blues" and "Waiting for the Sun."]...R. Unterberger

Deep Purple - Machine Head (1972)(Gold Disc Remaster 2010)

Led Zeppelin's fourth album, Black Sabbath's Paranoid, and Deep Purple's Machine Head have stood the test of time as the Holy Trinity of English hard rock and heavy metal, serving as the fundamental blueprints followed by virtually every heavy rock & roll band since the early '70s. And, though it is probably the least celebrated of the three, Machine Head contains the "mother of all guitar riffs" -- and one of the first learned by every beginning guitarist -- in "Smoke on the Water." Inspired by real-life events in Montreux, Switzerland, where Deep Purple were recording the album when the Grand Hotel was burned to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert, neither the song, nor its timeless riff, should need any further description. However, Machine Head was anything but a one-trick pony, introducing the bona fide classic opener "Highway Star," which epitomized all of Deep Purple's intensity and versatility while featuring perhaps the greatest soloing duel ever between guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord. Also in top form was singer Ian Gillan, who crooned and exploded with amazing power and range throughout to establish himself once and for all as one of the finest voices of his generation, bar none. Yes, the plodding shuffle of "Maybe I'm a Leo" shows some signs of age, but punchy singles "Pictures of Home" and "Never Before" remain as vital as ever, displaying Purple at their melodic best. And finally, the spectacular "Space Truckin'" drove Machine Head home with yet another tremendous Blackmore riff, providing a fitting conclusion to one of the essential hard rock albums of all time...E. Rivadavia
