Helloween - Metal Jukebox (1999)(12-trsck Remaster 2008)

1999 outing by the German heavy metal heroes, a covers album featuring interpretations of 11 of their favorite songs, including classics by Cream, Scorpions, Jethro Tull , Faith No More, Bowie, Alex Harvey, The Beatles, Focus and even ABBA! The Japanese edition includes their remake of Deep Purple's 'Rat Bat Blue' added as a bonus track, and also features a limited edition, full color CD-sized sticker of the cover art for the initial pressing only. 12 tracks total. 2008

Seminal power metal gods Helloween appear to have gotten rather bored after their amazing last album, Better Than Raw, and hence laid down an album full of recordings by other musicians. They crank out Scorpions, Jethro Tull, Beatles, Faith No More, and Cream songs, among others. First the surprises and successes. ABBA's "Lay All Your Love on Me," as strange as that sounds, comes across as a power metal radio ballad that carries a certain appeal with it, while they pour forth "White Room" by Cream with amazing, psychedelic sounding success. When they cover prog rock favorite Focus, and their endearing instrumental hit, "Hocus Pocus," with utter craziness and convincing success (complete with yodeling), one can't help but wonder if they are partaking in too many '70s extracurricular activities. When David Bowie, oops, I mean Andi Deris, sings "Space Oddity," you get a creepy feeling, because Deris appears possessed by the spirit of the man from Mars himself. Most of the songs work; those failing are the Beatles' "All My Loving," "Faith Healer" by Alex Harvey Band, and a few others. This album is fun, but like Blind Guardian's Forgotten Tales, it is not essential to the average listener. So if you are a diehard or just a sucker for cover albums then pop your money in the Metal Jukebox, kick back with a beer, and enjoy the party...Jason Hundey

Helloween - Better Than Raw (1998)(12-track Remaster 2007)

Never quite in the spotlight yet never quite forgotten, Helloween continued to record over a decade and a half after their debut album. And to some success, actually. Granted, that success was largely limited to Europe and Japan, but it was enough to sustain the group. And, weirdly enough, through sheer existence -- continual touring and recording -- Helloween accomplished something very rare indeed for metal bands in their second decade: they actually began to improve. They never quite managed to hit the peaks of Keeper of the Seven Keys, and the youthful energy of their first albums had long disappeared, but the band continued to refine its sound and push itself into new progressive territory. Better Than Raw is proof of that and arguably their best album of the '90s. There still are silly moments -- if you're not a hardcore fan, the "metal will never die" platitudes of "Falling Higher" will rub you the wrong way -- but the music is layered and unpredictable, ranging from metal anthems to metal ballads to neo-classical metal to neo-black metal. It's an ambitious set, and it's all the more impressive coming from veterans, not a bunch of newcomers. With the pop sense of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks now leading the band, Fleetwood Mac moved completely away from blues and created this homage to love, Southern California-style. Each songwriter makes his or her presence known: Nicks for her dreamy, mystical reveries ("Dreams," "Gold Dust Woman:); Christine McVie for her ultra-catchy slogans ("Don't Stop"); and Buckingham for his deceptively simple pop songs ("Second Hand News," "Go Your Own Way"). "The Chain," written collectively, is the Mac at their most dramatic. In 1975, a pair of hard-living, hard-rocking British blues rockers went eye-to-eye with a pair of sensitive L.A. singer-songwriter types -- and the rockers blinked. The bluesmen were Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, whose band, Fleetwood Mac, had first recorded in 1967. The Californians were Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, a couple romantically and musically, who'd recorded an album as Buckingham Nicks. The two pairs, along with McVie's wife, Christine (a respected singer and songwriter in her own right who joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 and then married John), teamed up and produced an album far more California sunshine rock than British blues. Following the grand success of their debut, Fleetwood Mac, the McVies broke up, as did Buckingham and Nicks, and the resulting romantic pressure-cooker -- coupled with Buckingham's flowering production talents -- produced Rumours, a tour de force that became one of the biggest-selling records ever made. "Here you go again," breathed Stevie Nicks near the start of the record, "you say you want your freedom." The emotional weariness captured in that line suffuses the album, notwithstanding the upbeat melodies and pristine, daring production. You also get Christine McVie's hit "Don't Stop" -- later a campaign theme song for Bill Clinton -- and arguably Buckingham's greatest track, a drum-driven cry at the death of love called "Go Your Own Way."...Bill Wyman

John Lennon - Power To The People - The Hits

Released as part of Apple/EMI†s extensive 2010 John Lennon remasters series, the single-disc Power to the People: The Hits covers familiar territory, but then again, that†s the point of this collection. It†s not designed to dig deep into John's catalog, it†s designed as the latest iteration of the canon, replacing 1997†s Lennon Legend, the last big-budget single-disc compilation. Power to the People is five cuts shorter than Lennon Legend, ditching album cuts "†Love†" and "†Borrowed Time,†" swapping the charting singles, "†Mother†" and "†Nobody Told Me,†" for the non-charting "†Gimme Some Truth†" and the actual number 18 hit "†Mind Games,†" but the end result is the same: Power to the People feels interchangeable with its predecessors because it is another collection with "†Imagine,†" "†Instant Karma,†" "†Whatever Gets You Through the Night,†" "†Jealous Guy,†" "†(Just Like) Starting Over,†" "†Watching the Wheels,†" "†Stand by Me,†" "†#9 Dream,†" "†Give Peace a Chance,†" "†Power to the People,†" and "†Happy Xmas (War Is Over).†" The remasters are excellent so if you are in need of a tight Lennon comp this is a good choice but if you already have a hits collection, there†s no reason to replace it. Roy Buchanan - Live In Japan - 1978 (2003)

2003 live release for the late blues rock guitarist features 8 tracks. Digipak.

Live in Japan (2003) is said to have been Roy Buchanan's favorite of all his platters, and ironically, it was never issued stateside. However, as word spread, the title became an essential addition to his discography. Fact is that it may have never come out at all, had there not been a loophole in Buchanan's contract with former label Polydor, giving them control over his non-North American output. Joining the guitarist for his 1977 tour of Japan are John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals). They are likewise the core contributors to Buchanan's most recent studio effort, A Street Called Straight (1976), though no tracks from the album are represented here. Instead, the set consists of recent collaborations, definitive cover versions, and a few seminal Buchananclassics. The immaculate fidelity immediately separates Live in Japan from most other releases in his canon. The enthusiastic yet typically reserved Japanese audience is first treated to a laid-back and stretched-out reading of Booker T. & the MG's' "Soul Dressing." The backing trio provide a rock-solid bed for Buchanan's sinuous interjections and spacious melody lines. "Sweet Honey Dew" is a perfect vehicle for some incendiary string shredding, although the actual tune is somewhat of a derivation of a standard blues riff. Perhaps more fitting is the rousing rendition of Larry Williams' "Slow Down," uncovering the nimble accuracy accompanying the sonic kick in Buchanan's piercing fret work. Contrasting this is the lengthy jam on "Blues Otani," as the ensemble ably improvise in and around the guitarist. Live in Japan concludes with an intimate and affective "Sweet Dreams," which may well have been the artist's unofficial anthem, as his unique interpretation undoubtedly made it a signature piece. If you own but one concert recording of Buchanan, let it be this one, as you will not be disappointed...Lindsay Planer

Roy Buchanan - American Axe - Live In 1974 (2003)

More evidence of one of the world's best unknown guitarists .

The master of the Fender Telecaster, the late Roy Buchanan is commemorated on a archival CD release by Powerhouse Records. The CD, titled Roy Buchanan: American Axe Live in 1974, features highlights from two searing club sets Buchanan played over 30 years ago. All the material is previously unreleased. The music on this hour-long disc reveals Roy Buchanan at the height of his awe-inspiring powers, delivering soulful ballads, wrenching blues, and raw rock 'n roll for the small club audiences he preferred. Devotees of blues, rock, country, and jazz will find here the tone, technique and emotive power of a masterful performer whose work still overshadows those he influenced. It's clear from these recordings why guitarists and music industry insiders from the 1950's to this day include Buchanan among a handful of the most original and influential players. The CD's set list includes Buchanan classics such as "The Messiah Will Come Again" (a first-ever live version), his siganture "Roy's Bluz", "Hey Joe" (a tribute to Jimi Hendrix) and the hypnotic lament "Sweet Dreams". The balance of songs draws on classics from the golden age of American popular music, including "C.C. Ryder", "I Hear You Knockin'", Get Out Of My Life, Woman", and "Further On Up The Road", delivered in Buchanan's trademark fashion, seductive yet riveting, grooving and explosive. Like Livestock, which was recorded the same year, American Axe displays Roy Buchanan's strengths and limits as a performer and recording artist. Livestock had to my mind three key tracks: "Roy's Blues", "I'm A Ram", and "I'm Evil", all among Roy's very best cuts ever. American Axe has three as well: "Roy's Bluz", "C.C. Rider", and "The Messiah Will Come Again". The two versions of "Roy's Bluz" display the absolute command and terrifying passion that Roy could draw from his Fender Telecaster. I prefer the first four minutes of the American Axe version, with its brilliant country-inspired and harmonic inventions (Roy even improvises another verse after singing the first three found on the studio version of "Roy's Bluz"). The Livestock version is astonishing during the last two minutes, displaying Roy's incomparable "engine revving" lick, so I prefer the ending of that version. "C.C. Ryder" has a stunning odyssey into country and jazz during the middle that Roy mustered at times, showing the influence he had on Danny Gatton, later the "World's Best Unknown Guitarist" in 1989. My last key track on American Axe, "The Messiah Will Come Again", I think, is the epitome of what Roy achieved: I have heard no less than five versions of this song live, sometimes played without a solo, sometimes with, but it never fails to give me notice that Roy played with a depth that very few players could ever hope for. The rest of the tracks on American Axe range from very good ("Too Many Drivers") to fair (a too-long "Done Your Daddy Dirty", a too-reticent version of "Sweet Dreams"); the material is often limited by vocals, but the enthusiasm by John Harrison and Byrd Foster is commmendable...D. Roy Buchanan - Guitar On Fire: The Atlantic Sessions (1993)

A ragin' sampling of the legendary axeman's late '70s Atlantic sides!

The 16-tracks on this compilation are from Roy Buchanan's trio of mid-1970s titles: A Street Called Straight (1976), Loading Zone (1977), and You're Not Alone (1978). After a less than personally (or professionally) satisfying stint earlier in the decade with Polydor Records, Buchanan teamed up with Atlantic, who helped him get out of his pending contract with the former. Under the direction of Arif Mardin, the guitarist assembled the same instrumental support combo he'd used during his concurrent and practically incessant touring -- John Harrison (bass), Malcolm Lukens (keyboards), and Byrd Foster (drums/vocals). The core quartet are augmented by all-stars Andy Newmark (drums), Will Lee (bass), Billy Cobham (percussion), the Brecker Brothers horn section, and even backing vocals from former Rascals member Eddie Brigati. The ferocious opening whine of "Running Out" is followed by Buchanan's nimble and liquefied tone, which enhances his otherwise bold and unabashed emotive leads. Specifically, the center solo exemplifies his remarkable ability to ably turn from a finely honed and sinister sound, to a divergent string stretching bluesy intonation. The reading of Jimi Hendrix' "If Six Was Nine" is nothing short of an inspired augmentation of the original. While Mardin's production on A Street Called Straight has been roundly criticized, there is a distinct progression from his previous studio releases, which were consistently hit-or-miss. Loading Zone is represented on this collection by no less than six of the LPs nine tunes. The effort was overseen by jazz bassist Stanley Clarke, and yields some thoroughly excellent material. Of top priority is the stretched-out Memphis groove on "Green Onions," sporting contributions from Booker T. & the MG's personnel Steve Cropper (guitar) and Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass). Of equal note is "Ramon's Blues," which commences this set, with riff upon riff of smouldering rounds of fretwork from Buchanan. You're Not Alone builds upon a spacey motif, right down to the astronaut headgear depicted in the cover artwork. Within the grooves are the languid and restrained "Fly...Night Bird," as well as a pair of diverse cover versions of rock classics "Turn to Stone" (Joe Walsh) and "Down by the River" (Neil Young). After a blistering take-off, the former disintegrates, thanks to the rather uninspired smooth jazz arrangement, which is highlighted by Buchanan's intense fret board flurries. Vocalist Gary St. Clair fronts the soulful "Down by the River," which is nowhere as essential as the live (and otherwise unavailable) rendering included on the two-disc Sweet Dreams: The Anthology (1992), or the decisive, if not definitive interpretation on Buck & the Snake Stretchers (1971). The ante is significantly raised, however, on the intense "Supernova," which aptly reasserts Buchanan's proficiency. Although there is a bit of overlapping material, Guitar on Fire: The Atlantic Sessions (1993) is a great companion to the aforementioned Sweet Dreams: The Anthology as a worthwhile critical assessment of Roy Buchanan's sadly unrated status, reiterating his moniker as "The World's Best Unknown Guitarist."... From the first steep bend of "Ramon's Blues" to the last haunting note of "The Messiah Will Come Again" this album is packed with the incredible guitar work of Roy Buchanan. Aptly named "Guitar On Fire", this album is full of fast licks, screaming solos and bluesy tunes. This compilation covers three albums from the late seventies of the late, great Tele-master. It's unfortunate that Buchanan was, and remains, pretty much unknown because his guitar work is spectacular. Most of the songs on this album are instrumentals, which showcase his ability with the axe. "The Heat of the Battle", provides a taste of things to come as he mixes up his solos with the melody. The song, like all his work, is full of raw power and energy. The music flows from his fingers at jaw dropping speed. He's not all about speed though. On "Hidden" he slows it down and plays airy notes with massive amounts of delay, and sliding between notes to give it a spacey feel. The great bassist, Stanley Clarke, provides the low frequencies on the tune, as well as a couple of others. Buchanan covers tunes by Booker T., Joe Walsh, Neil Young and Hendrix. He does a great job on "Green Onions" with the M.G.'s behind him.
It was unfortunate that Buchanan took his life so early. He played as if he was born with a guitar in his hand, and was able to coax sounds of that beat up Telecaster that others would be hard pressed to do even if they were running it through a band saw. This man was a shear force in his playing. He could play loud, or soft, quick or slow. I haven't heard anyone like him. If you're a fan of guitar, then check Buchanan out. Value for money (2 CD's - 40 tracks - Cheap as chips) and track selections are excellent with everything from everything worth having from their early and by far best period. Forget 'Crazy Nights' and 'Animalize' etc..when they were trying too hard to fit in with what was around at that time, this is what you need to buy 'KISS GOLD - 1974 to 1982' good time american rock with tracks from every album (sixteen in total) in chronological order including the four solo albums and two brilliant live albums. I have all the early KISS albums on vinyl and just wantedmore… a good compilation CD and this is the one - So if you want to know what Gene Simmons did and how he made his millions before he did 'Rock School' get this!!...D. Solomon Burke - Nothing's Impossible

It's all but impossible to make a bad record with Solomon Burke; as a vocalist, the man is simply a force of nature, and all you have to do is point him in front of a microphone and let him do his stuff and you'll have something worth hearing. But coming up with accompaniment that's worthy of Burke's talents isn't quite as simple, and for a man who cut his teeth working with the likes of Jerry Wexler and Bert Berns, finding the right producer in this day and age is no simple matter. Nothing's Impossible teams Burke with another legend of Southern soul, the great producer, arranger, and songwriter Willie Mitchell (best-known for his work with Al Green) who had been after Burke to make an album with him for years. One listen to Nothing's Impossible confirms that Mitchell's instincts were right on the money; this music has just the right heft and texture for Burke, rich, strong, and gospel-influenced R&B that's sturdy enough to support Burke's earth-shaking vocals while giving the star of the show enough room to move comfortably. Mitchell's subtle, expressive use of strings and horns is very much in evidence here, and the rhythm section cuts a deep, implacable groove. The church has always been one of Burke's strongest vocal influences, and on Nothing's Impossible, Mitchell and his studio crew allow Burke to raise up as much Sunday morning fervor as he needs; on longer numbers like "Dreams" and "It Must Be Love," Burke stretches out like a preacher hitting a groove in front of a congregation, and hearing the King of Rock and Soul get the spirit is a remarkable thing. Burke and Mitchell contributed to the songwriting on these sessions, with both men bringing their A game, and though the notion of Burke covering Anne Murray's hit "You Needed Me" might sound dire, once you hear him do it, it's hard not to be awestruck at the way he brings the old warhorse to life. The sad irony of Nothing's Impossible is that after decades of trying to lure Solomon Burke into his studio, Burke showed up in time for what proved to be Willie Mitchell's final production project, as Mitchell succumbed to heart failure a few months before the album was released. But if this record is Willie Mitchell's final musical offering, Solomon Burke made certain that the man closed out his career on a high note; this is old-school R&B that's smart, passionate, and powerful, and proves the King of Rock and Soul still rules his kingdom with a sure hand. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Juicy Lucy - Juicy Lucy (1969) (Remaster 2010)

Digitally remastered edition of the classic 1969 debut album featuring one bonus track: 'Walking Down The Highway'. Formed out of the ashes of the legendary group The Misunderstood, the band featured Ray Owen, Glen Campbell, Chris Mercer, Neil Hubbard, Keith Ellis and Pete Dobson. One of the first signings to Vertigo Records, this debut album was a fine work and spawned their classic interpretation of Bo Diddley s 'Who Do You Love?' , a Top Ten UK hit.

If any one performance can be said to encapsulate all that Juicy Lucy portended, as their career got underway with the new decade of the '70s, it was "Who Do You Love?" The band's first single, spinning off their debut album, it was as fast and mean and dirty as any record could have been, a breakneck tour through the bayou swamps and dirt-track roads of the American South, powered by a guitar to make your fingers bleed. And it gave the band a U.K. hit that still sounds fresh today. But Juicy Lucy were no one-trick ponies. True, their debut album is remembered as much for its artwork (a mostly naked, fruit-draped lady) as for its content, but step inside and the group was locked firmly, and gleefully into the free-freak movement of the age -- while Chuck Berry's "Nadine" was fed through a Hell's Angels nightclub jukebox "Are You Satisfied" emerged a festival chant spread out over six-and-one-half minutes, as mantric as (almost) anything the Edgar Broughton Band was doing at the time. The band's American roots are seldom far from the surface, of course: "Mississippi Woman" dripped oozing, cracked croak blues, and "Chicago North-Western" essentially offers up a history of the Midwestern railroads, while Glen Campbell's steel guitar breathed Americana over everything it touched. But no matter how powerful Juicy Lucy may have been, it could not paper over the cracks that were already forming across the lineup, and by the time the band came to record its next album, the group that cut this one was already long gone. One can only dream of what they might have achieved, had they stuck together...Dave Thompson

Steel guitarist, Glenn Fernando Campbell, was the star behind this band. He'd joined them from The Misunderstood. Their vinyl zenith is usually considered to be their first album which contained a number of tight, well constructed songs, including a fine cover of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love?, which also took them into the 45 Charts. It came on the now highly collectable spiral Vertigo label in an attractive gatefold sleeve. Sadly it was downhill thereafter, their fortunes were hardly helped by several personnel changes. Paul Williams, ex-Zoot Money, came in on vocals, replacing Roy Owen on the second album, but the result was a disappointment. None of the original line-up survived for their fourth and final effort, Pieces. The line-up for this included Andy Pyle, whilst he took a brief break from Savoy Brown. Bite Down Hard is Jo Jo Gunne's best album. Great production, great songs, and a great flow, moving from strength to strength. This CD contains the best song they recorded: Roll Over Me. Back when I played the LP though, I always started at track 2, as Ready Freddy sounded awful in 1972 and still does. What a downer, and what a way to begin. Jay had a voice right in line with other vaguely sexless vocalists of that time, but here he just sounds like a eunuch. Yeech. But play Roll Over Me with that dreaded volume knob as far to the right as your aged ears (and maybe aged neighbors as well) can bear. Not just nostalgia, not just pining for a hazy past, but downright solid rock and roll. These guys could boogie. It sounds exquisite, and moves through 3 more excellent cuts...J.C. Clark

Louis Armstrong - Gold (2 CD Remaster 2006)

Annotator Bob Porter begins his liner notes to Hip-O Records' Louis Armstrong compilation Gold by citing a chart statistic: Leadoff track "What a Wonderful World" became a Top 40 hit in 1988, 20 years after it was recorded, due to its inclusion in the movie Good Morning, Vietnam. That is a clue to the approach that the collection takes -- this is a hits-oriented album concerned more with Louis Armstrong the pop star of the '50s and '60s than Louis Armstrong the jazz musician of the '20s and '30s. In part, that focus is nearly forced on Hip-O, the reissue imprint of major label Universal. Universal has in its archives the catalogs of several record companies for which Armstrong recorded, primarily Decca, to which he was signed for most of the period from 1935 to 1954 (and for which he continued to record on a freelance basis through 1957). Also in the Universal vault are the holdings of ABC-Paramount, which include "What a Wonderful World," and Kapp, including Armstrong's number one 1964 hit "Hello, Dolly!" Hip-O has licensed some tracks from the other majors: a 1961 recording of "Solitude" originally released on Roulette comes from EMI, and seven tracks come from Sony BMG, including celebrated '20s tracks by Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five and Louis Armstrong & His Hot Seven originally released on OKeh. But 32 of 40 tracks come from inside the company, and 21 of 40 date from the '50s and '60s. Armstrong's pop fans should be delighted. In addition to the hits "What a Wonderful World," "Hello, Dolly!," "Mack the Knife," and "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," the two-hour-and-15-minute two-disc set includes duets with Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Louis Jordan, and Billie Holiday. Much of Armstrong's core repertoire, the songs he played night after night throughout his career, is featured, although in many cases the tracks are re-recordings made in the '50s rather than the initial recordings made for other labels. That will be one objection for jazz purists, but then they are likely to be put off by the album as a whole. By proceeding in roughly reverse chronological order from the '60s to the '20s, the album, from a jazz fan's perspective, puts things in exactly the wrong ranking of importance, suggesting that the most important Armstrong is the veteran pop vocalist who takes the occasional trumpet solo, rather than the innovative young cornet improviser. But jazz fans will be warned off by an album called Gold to begin with, just as pop fans will be thoroughly satisfied (except that they will want more). ~ William Ruhlmann

Johnny Rivers - Secret Agent Man - Ultimate Anthology (2 CD Remaster 2006)

While this two-CD collection does include all but one of his Top 40 hits, it's not quite the ultimate Johnny Rivers anthology, nor is it even the best double-CD "best of" devoted to the man. That honor still belongs to Rhino's Anthology, 1964-1977, a preferable compilation if you can find it. While almost all of Rivers' big, popular hits are on disc one of Secret Agent Man, most of disc two is devoted to tracks from obscure post-1990 releases, long after Rivers had last visited the charts. That wouldn't be such a problem if these recordings were on par with those from his commercial prime, but while they're okay for the most part, very few Rivers fans would consider the cuts among his best work. To be blunt, if you added the first couple songs off of disc two (the mid-'70s hits "Help Me Rhonda" and "Swayin' to the Music (Slow Dancin')") to disc one, and cut off everything else, you could call it a single-disc best of and no one would notice that anything was missing. There are no complaints about the 1964-1973 material on disc one, on which one hit partying update of an oldie follows another, with occasional interruptions by songs Rivers first popularized, particularly "Summer Rain," "Poor Side of Town," and "Secret Agent Man." For those who are curious, the 1991-2006 tracks that take up most of the second disc do find him in decent voice, if mostly still reliant on oldies covers. The numbers from 1991's The Memphis Sun Recordings, in fact, sound as if they could have been done in 1970, and Rivers' voice sounds only a little faded on the later recordings, though these contain a few unimpressive, laid-back reflective songs (as well as a couple 2006 recordings, "Rollin' Stone" and "Let It Rock," that make their first appearance on this compilation). All of this later stuff's presence, however, means there's no room for some reasonably interesting secondary '60s tracks that made Anthology, 1964-1977, like the 1966 Top 40 hit single "Under Your Spell Again," and some of the first covers of Jimmy Webb songs by a prominent artist. Secret Agent Man does make room, however, for his 1968 cover of Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street," perhaps because Dylan unexpectedly cited it as his favorite cover version of one of his compositions in his Chronicles tobiography...R.Unterberger

Triumvirat - Spartacus (1975)(Deluxe Edit Remaster 2002)

Spartacus may not be as progressively strong as 1973's Illusions on a Double Dimple album, but it still stands as this German outfit's second best release. Based on the famous Roman gladiator who led the rebellion against his homeland, the music supports the album's concept quite solidly, with the better tracks coming in the form of the sporadic "School of Instant Pain" and the nine- minute "March to the Eternal City," which gathers a menacing conglomeration of bass guitar riffs and pointed keyboard work. The music becomes effectively motivational toward the concept at the proper times, enabling the band's idea to remain fresh and colorful as the music is played out. Jurgen Fritz's Hammond organ and Moog intervention gives Spartacus a genuine progressive air, culminating as it should on the final track. Although Triumvirat's staunch, stern notes and articulate keyboard meandering can easily be compared to Emerson, Lake and Palmer's style, it's balanced quite impressively with Helmut Koellen's electric and acoustic guitar work. This album has a slight edge over 1976's Old Loves Die Hard because the synthesizers are put to better use, while the overall sound and flow of Spartacus contains greater instrumental animation. [The German reissue appends two songs that were not included on the original release: a live rendition of "The Capital of Power" and the previously unreleased "Showstopper."] ~ Mike DeGagne

Germany's superstars Triumvirat have just announced they are back together again after a very long hiatus, and Friday Music is celebrating their return with the re-release of a newly remastered version of their Prog-Rock classic Spartacus. Spartacus was their most enduring and successful album ever. It graced the upper rungs of the album charts for the better part of 1976 and gave this act a home forever in the progressive rock movement. The album based itself on the story of the historic Roman gladiator and the trials and tribulations of his war against his country. As the saga unfolds, the skillful keyboard artistry of founder Jurgen Fritz alongside his band mates Helmut Kollen and Hans Bathelt help to deliver one of this genres most memorable and important recordings.
Triumvirat began to make some credible noise with their previous release Illusions On A Double Dimple in 1973, and as the fan base and radio support began to build in time for the 1976 release of Spartacus, they were soon becoming a staple of progressive and rock playlists throughout the world. It is easy to see why, when you listen to the first few bars of the opening track "The Capital Of Power." It was common to hear tunes like this and "The Sweetest Sound of Liberty" alongside tracks from notable arena rock entities on U.S. radio in the seventies. When they arrived in the States to help promote their first couple of albums for Harvest/Capitol, their airplay dominance helped garner a solid reputation as a successful touring outfit. This newly remastered deluxe edition of Spartacus proudly includes some very rare recordings that we have recently dug up in the EMI vaults. Triumvirat - Old Loves Die Hard (1976)(Remaster Edit 2002)

2002 remastered reissue of the German progressive rock act's 1976 album. Includes one bonus track originally released as a 7'' single 'Take A Break Today'. EMI

Old Loves Die Hard is this German band's most structured, most entertaining, and most accessible album next to the masterpiece Illusions on a Double Dimple. The elements of progressive rock are wonderfully marbled throughout these seven tracks, highlighted by the ten plus minutes of "Panic on Fifth Avenue" and the brashness "The History of Mystery." Singer Barry Palmer's voice climbs and descends to the backdrop of such keyboard machinations as the Hammond C3 organ and Moog synthesizer. Keyboardist Jurgen Fritz implements light delicacies of piano and strings to contrast the sometimes dominatingmore… feel of the synthesizers. While anything but dark, the music on Old Loves Die Hard peaks and sometimes hovers with a colorfulness that presents each song with some musical livelihood. There's an assertiveness that's cast throughout this album thanks to the whole-hearted fusion of percussion and bass, coming to life especially on "A Day in a Life." Triumvirat's emphasis here is on their free-range use of keyboards and creative application of voice and instrumentation, much like that of 1973's Illusions or '75's Spartacus...D. Jellinc

"Illusions in a Double Dimple" is the best album recorded by Triumvirat, and "Old Loves Die Hard" ranks at the second position in that list. Helmut Köllen went out to pursue a solo career (unfortunately, he had just completed his first solo album when he died), and was replaced by Dick Frangenberg (the original bass player) and English singer Barry Palmer. Juicy Lucy - Lie Back and Enjoy It (1970) (Remaster 1999)

24bit digitally remastered edition issue of the album classic in a deluxe, miniaturized LP sleeve replica of the original vinyl album artwork.

If Juicy Lucy's debut album ranks among the most haunting, haunted blues-rock albums of the late 1960s, its follow-up only illustrates how damaging the last six months had been for the band. Fully half the band had been replaced, including vocalist Ray Owen and guitarist Neil Hubbard, and with them went much of the evil electrics and swamp-conscious blues that gave Juicy Lucy its most scintillating shivers. The players who replaced them — former Zoot Money singer Paul Williams, ex-Jeff Beck drummer Rod Coombes, and guitarist Micky Moody — were no slouches, of course, and the interplaymore… between Glenn Ross Campbell's steel and Chris Mercer's sax is as chilling as ever. But songs like "Built for Comfort," "Thinking of My Life," and even a cover of Frank Zappa's "Willie the Pimp" owe more to a premonition of ZZ Top than a bad dream in the bayou, while the rest of Lie Back and Enjoy It found the group pursuing a distinctly country-rock flavored direction. Even the first-album era "Changed My Mind, Changed My Sign" sounded more like the Dils than Dr. John, and Lie Back and Enjoy It emerged a distinctly unenjoyable disappointment, at least by the standards Juicy Lucy once held so high.

Lou Reed - Rock 'N' Roll Animal (1974)(Japan 7-track Remaster 2006)

In 1974, after the commercial disaster of his album Berlin, Lou Reed needed a hit, and Rock N Roll Animal was a rare display of commercial acumen on his part, just the right album at just the right time. Recorded in concert with Reed's crack road band at the peak of their form, Rock N Roll Animal offered a set of his most anthemic songs (most dating from his days with the Velvet Underground) in arrangements that presented his lean, effective melodies and street-level lyrics in their most user-friendly form (or at least as user friendly as an album with a song called "Heroin" can get). Early-'70s arena rock bombast is often the order of the day, but guitarists Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter use their six-string muscle to lift these songs up, not weigh them down, and with Reed's passionate but controlled vocals riding over the top, "Sweet Jane," "White Light/White Heat," and "Rock 'n' Roll" finally sound like the radio hits they always should have been. Reed would rarely sound this commercial again, but Rock N Roll Animal proves he could please a crowd when he had to. [The revised CD reissue of Rock N Roll Animal released in 2000 offers markedly better sound than the album's initial release, along with two bonus cuts that give a better idea of how this band approached the material from Berlin on-stage, as well as an amusing moment of Reed verbally sparring with a heckler.] Mark Deming

Lou Reed has always dabbled in contrasts, so it comes as no surprise that the follow-up to his darkly serious concept album BERLIN was a commercially oriented, good-time rock & roll fest. Though the songs are somewhat given to stylistic excess, the overall sound is streamlined, accessible, and visceral. The Frost - Rock and Roll Music (1969) (2006)

The Frost's second album on Vanguard, Rock and Roll Music, has the 1969 Dick Wagner four years before he would tour as part of the Lou Reed Rock & Roll Animal Band. The title track, recorded live at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit by engineer Ed Friedner, has an incessant chant over a bellowing guitar foundation. It is a good, raw picture of early Wagner music, a vital document of a Michigan band that helped shape that scene. "Sweet Lady Love" is the group in the recording studio with a tune that rocks like latter day Guess Who around the time of their Live at the Paramount LP. Producer Sam Charters balances the live tracks with the studio ones, á la John Simon's vision for Janis Joplin's Cheap Thrills. An acoustic ballad, "Linda," is placed in between that hard rock and is a far cry from the nice madness of side two's live tracks. In fact, the delicacy of Dick Wagner's voice and guitar playing might've found some chart action if it wasn't put in the context of a near metal album. Wagner sounds more like a British folky, say solo Paul McCartney, than American contemporary songwriters/singers James Taylor and Jonathan Edwards. "Linda" also sounds more like the type of music one would expect to hear on Vanguard. The parallels between Lou Reed and Frost cannot be ignored. Reed's signature tunes during RR Animal were "Sweet Jane," "Lady Day," and "Rock & Roll." Wagner's titles, "Rock and Roll Music" and "Sweet Lady Love," are side by side here -- just an eerie premonition of the shape of things to come. "Black Train" on this album has the same vibe as the Velvet Underground's "Train Coming Round the Bend" off of Loaded, though the style and melody are different. "Help Me Baby," on the other hand, has a throbbing Blue Cheer bassline from co-singer and bassist Gordy Garris and rhythm guitarist Don Hartman, as well as a Grand Funk style blitz. "Donny's Blues" opens side two, almost eight minutes of the band vamping with Hartman on vocals and harmonica. It melts into the song the Animals made famous for Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place." Vanguard should go through the vaults and expand the live segments of this recording. One can feel the framework which would benefit Alice Cooper when the Rock & Roll Animal Band moved on to back that rock star. And Dick Wagner played a big role in writing some of Alice's biggest hits when they collaborated. The Frost has glimpses of the sound that would be so instrumental in defining '70s hard rock...J. The version of "We Got To Get Out of This Place" on this album is indeed a mess, but that's because it's a butchered, shortened version of the whole live performance, which can now be heard on *The Best of the Frost,* which, despite its title, consists of the live tracks from the Grande Ballroom not included on this record. If you dig Dick Wagner -- and hard-rock-guitar nuts certainly should -- the so-called Best of is the place to hear him stretch out with the Frost. "We Got To Get Out of This Place" is 17 minutes long on that record -- but it finally makes sense!...M. Milo

Jo Jo Gunne - So...Where's the show? (1974)(2004)

After the erratic and self-consciously weird Jumpin' the Gunne, this album is a return to form. More than that, actually -- the replacement of founding guitarist Matt Andes with John Stahely resulted in a tighter, more focused, and generally more interesting band than ever before. Jo Jo Gunne was originally formed to be, in Jay Ferguson's phrase, "a hard-ass rock band," and on So...Where's the Show they finally were one. Ferguson responded to the harder edge by abandoning the synthesizer in favor of a jazzy piano sound, an inspired move under the circumstances. The combination enlivens even the dud songs; "I'm Your Shoe" starts as a pedestrian slow-grind, but has an incredible instrumental break in which the whole band rocks hard and fast, then drops out suddenly to let Ferguson take a wonderful and delicate piano solo. The element of surprise gets you the first time, the brilliant playing every time afterward. When the band actually takes on a song with a half-decent hook all the way through, the results are splendid. The title cut, "She Said Allright," and "Falling Angel" are all winners, and there isn't a single track that is actually a dud. If it was inevitable that Jo Jo Gunne was going to break up, at least they left one consistently good album behind. Richard Foss

Juicy Lucy - Get a Whiff a This (1971)(2006)

I own 2000+ albums, CDs, tapes, and this has been my favorite album of all time. I first heard it in the 70's, and I still listen to it frequently. The vocals, the guitar, the horns, they are perfect. Probably not for anyone who isn't attracted to blues stylings, and raw vocal. My favorite cut; "Big Lil". The guitar break goes clear through the whole song,and the vocals are a perfect explanation of how Rock was born of The Blues...A. Custom

Juicy Lucy's third album in 18 months, and the third to draw as much attention for its artwork as its contents, would prove to be the band's last. Although a fourth Juicy Lucy album would appear in 1972, not a single founding member was left on board. Get a Whiff of This itself was very much the son of its predecessor, still locked firmly into a country groove (the twanging "Mr. A. Jones," the fast-pickin' "Jessica"), but looking out toward more unexpected pastures. The funky "Big Lil." and the blistering antiwar anthem "Midnight Sun" were both strong inclusions, while a take on the Allmans' "Midnight Rider" remains one of that particular anthem's most dynamic revisions. Despite at least half an album's worth of highlights, however, still there was nothing that really leaped out and grabbed the listener -- and nothing that could ever displace the band's debut from its sacred spot on the turntable, a fate that Glenn Campbell admitted he predicted when he conjured up that most distinctive title. It was his way of saying "the whole thing stinks."

Status Quo - The Party Ain't Over Yet (2005)(2007)

The fact that Status Quo can deliver an album of this quality after around 40 years in the business is quite something. This really is a cracker! From the first track, it'll have you bouncing around the room and scaring the family pets. The song writing is excellent and there are some classics here - 'The Party Ain't Over Yet', 'The Bubble', 'Familiar Blues', 'All That Counts as Love' and 'Belavista Man' are really good songs, tightly played and delivered as one might expect. 'Familiar Blues' surprises with its acoustic opening and then kicks into a strong country blues number. Status Quo aremore… far from finished in the business when they can deliver an album of this fine quality. The title says it all!...D. Christen

Triumvirat - Mediterranian Tales (1972)(8-track Remaster 2002)

Triumvirat have always been referred to as an ELP clone band a view which I have failed personally to adopt... sure there are some strong similarities but also a number of differences... "Mediterranean Tales" is certainly one of those differences ! The opening side long title track is simply killer with heavy 70’s keyboard and German underground sensitivities. Cleverly energized epic track with some breathtaking instrumental-passages and instrumentation. "Mediterranean Tales" is a strong mix of classical and rock genres including overtures, fugues, thematic restatements and many different styled movements. Make no mistake this album is full of Jürgen Fritz’s killer keyboard work (a classically trained musician). The rest of the band include Hans Bathelt (drums, percussion) and Hans Pape (bass, vocals). Re-mastered CD edition also includes four bonus tracks previously appeared on singles...D. Jellinc

A Storming Double Album, with the First CD Recorded at Shady Grove, Washington Dc in November 1973 and the Second CD at Beacon Theatre, Nyc in June 1976. Included on the 1973 Set is an Early Recording of the Classic Fly Like an Eagle as Well as Hits from the Earlier Albums. The Second Disc Includes the Classic Single the Joker, a Great Interpretation of Robert Johnson's Come on in My Kitchen and Another Version of the Then New Fly Like an Eagle Track. Sleeve Notes Are by Steve Miller, Paul Mccartney and Les Paul and a Number of Archive Photographs Make this Package a Must for Any Steve Miller Fans.

Two Disc's of concert material from 1973 and 1976 showcasing Steve Miller at his best. The first CD showcases the Joker CD, while disc two covers the Fly like an Eagle Period. Any fan of Miller will tell you that this was a period of Miller at his best, both in songwriting and muscianship. King Biscuit does a great job remastering these shows as they sound excellent. Heavy blues influences and sounds abound while playing some of Millers best tunes. Lately, Steve Miller has seemed bored on stage while going through the motions, that is not the case here. There is genuine passion coming through the shows. This is a worthy addition to anyones CD collection to show off a tight band with great songs to play. High recommendation...B. Bluematter

VA - Coyote Ugly (Vol. 1)(2000)

As you might expect from a movie about the infamous New York watering hole where barmaids enthusiastically shake their leather-clad booties on top of the bar, there's nothing sedate about the Coyote Ugly soundtrack. Even rising country diva LeAnn Rimes gets her groove on -- in addition to her cameo in the film, she contributes four new songs to the album. While all four tracks were penned by ballad master Diane Warren, two of Rimes's songs -- the ultra-catchy "Can't Fight the Moonlight" and "The Right Kind of Wrong" -- show little LeAnn moving, very successfully, into more upbeat dance territory. Maintaining the groove are a few oldies to inspire your own bar-dancing (or at least some kitchen-counter shimmying), notably the Charlie Daniels Band classic "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and Don Henley's "All She Wants to Do Is Dance," and two dance-pop classics, EMF's pub favorite "Unbelievable" and Snap's diva-fueled "The Power." Unfortunately, the party stops about three songs short -- plan to skip the buzz-kill ending of the last three tracks from Rare Groove, Tamara Walker, and Mary Griffin. But the first two-thirds of Coyote Ugly will have you kicking up your cowboy boots, even if you're nowhere near the bar. Wendy Mitchell

Four new LeAnn Rimes tracks highlight this collection. Though all from the pen of veteran songwriter Diane Warren, the tracks vary in style from diva pop ("Fight the Moonlight") to sentimental musings ("Please Remember"). It's only a matter of time before Rimes leaves country music completely behind for the sleek modern world of mainstream pop. The remaining songs are a hodgepodge of different eras. EMF's "Unbelievable" and Snap's "The Power" hark back to the early 1990s, while Don Henley and INXS deliver the dancebeat kick of the '80s. The firing fiddle of the Charlie Daniels Band's 1979 hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" seems out of context here. But then, this bar must have one odd jukebox to begin with...D. Jellinc

Kin Ping Meh - No.2 (1972)(10-track Remaster 2007)

Kin Ping Meh's second album, the wittily-titled No.2, is not so much Krautrock as late-period Psych/Prog, with a guitar-driven jamming sound that was rapidly falling out of favour at the time. This isn't to denigrate the album, as it's actually fairly good, with a driving rhythm section and good playing throughout, although it now sounds very dated, as with many contemporary lesser outfits. The CD version adds five tracks from non-LP singles, and while none of them are bad, neither are any of them very exciting, and actually drag the album into 'boredom' territory, although I'm in general agreement with the 'make everything available' lobby. There isn't actually an awful lot of Frieder Schmitt's Mellotron work, with some flutes on Sometime, and a good strings part on My Dove, one of the album's best tracks. If you hear the CD version, the single version of Too Many People has some flutes and strings, too. As a result, despite a handful of 'Tron tracks, I can only really recommend this to enthusiasts of the country/era..D. Jellinc

Japanese only SHM pressing. The SHM-CD [Super High Material CD] format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. There has been no shortage of Cream compilations over the years -- as a matter of fact, they far outnumber the group's actual albums, of which there were merely four (true, they were recorded during an insanely productive two-year lifespan) -- but 2005's Gold is arguably the best of the lot. Released as part of Universal's ongoing Gold series, Cream's installment spans 29 tracks over the course of two discs, with the first CD being devoted to their studio work (it weighs in at 21 tracks) and the second devoted to live recordings (it runs only eight songs, which illustrates how much they improvised in concert). Not only are all of the usual suspects here -- the hits "I Feel Free," "Strange Brew," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Tales of Brave Ulysses," "Badge," "Swlabr," "Crossroads," and "Politician" -- but this includes such gems as "World of Pain," "Passing the Time," "Doing That Scrapyard Thing," and "What a Bringdown." While there are a handful of cuts that might have deserved inclusion -- chief among them "Four Until Late," "Take It Back," and "As You Said" -- everything essential is here, and each disc draws a near-definitive portrait of what the group achieved on-stage and in the studio. As a (relatively) concise overview, Gold can't be beat -- it tells you everything you need to know about this legendary supergroup. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Kin Ping Meh - Kin Ping Meh (1971)(13-track Remaster 2007)

Kin Ping Meh is a guitar and organ laden (with mellotron) hard rock/psych band whose name is taken from a 16th century Chinese poem (it means "Plum Blossom Branch in a Golden Vase"). Though pretty much hard rock most of they time, they show many strong Beatles influences, a la John Lennon, in particular. The self titled first album, originally released late in 1971 as a quintet. The Revisited/Brain CD release of Kin Ping Meh contains both sides of both singles released before their first album.
Pop magazine described the album as ...eight melodious and catchy pieces. Perfectly produced and smoothly coordinated from a technical point of view, the album by Kin Ping Meh will easily become a commercial success.

Procol Harum - Exotic Birds & Fruit (1974) (40th Anniversary Remaster 2009)

After two albums that combined progressive rock with orchestral grandeur, Procol Harum returned to the basics on this 1974 outing. This time, the accent was returned to the thick electric guitar and swirling guitar on a batch of lushly textured but driving songs that covered everything from hard rock to moody prog and even a bit of music hall comedy. In the rock category, the most memorable numbers are the opener, "Nothing but the Truth," a punchy tune that displays the group's thorough grasp of rock dynamics as it veers between metallic riffing and rollicking keyboard flourishes over a stomping beat, and "Monsieur R. Monde," a bracing mid-tempo track that punctuates its guitar-heavy attack with some infectious cowbell accents from drummer B.J. Wilson. In the progressive arena, the most interesting tunes are "The Idol," a sumptuous epic that adds layer after layer of keyboard and guitar as it tells the story of a hero's fall from grace, and "The Thin End of the Wedge," an avant-garde tune that highlights Mick Grabham's guitar work as it creates a surreal, gothic atmosphere. Other memorable tunes include "Beyond the Pale," a tune about the search for the Holy Grail that mixes pop hooks with a Germanic folk song feel, and "Exotic Fruit," an amusing song that extols the virtues of its titular subject over a bouncy English music hall melody. It's a diverse group of songs and styles, but the group delivers them with aplomb and energy, and the album is further bolstered by a sumptuous, consistent Chris Thomas production that makes sure everything blends together smoothly. As a result, Exotic Birds and Fruit is one of Procol Harum's finest efforts of the '70s. [Trivia note: The 2000 reissue of this album on Repertoire Records added a single version of "As Strong as Samson" and "Drunk Again," a non-album B-side and one of Procol Harum's finest and heaviest rockers. Tom Petty - Mojo

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Mojo is a revelation. This Is the live sound (apparently the album was recorded live in the studio without overdubs) of TP and the band playing the most sublime sounding blues. It ranges from the opening traditional blues format of Jefferson Jericho Blues and moves next on to First Fllash Of Freedom, a track that the Grateful Dead might have recorded. Other stand outs are the brilliant story telling of The Trip To Pirate's Cove, No reason To Cry and US 41. There are however no weak tracks on the album.
The reggae influenced Don't Pull Me Over is fantastic. TP's ghostly vocals coupled with a reggae beat about hoping to avoid being caught by the police whilst carrying drugs. This is an album that flows beautifully from start to finish and the excellent production highlights the superb musicianship including some fantastic performances from all involved especially Mike Campbell on guitar and Benmont Tench on keyboards...D. Tom Petty has been fronting the Heartbreakers off and on (mostly on) for over 30 years now, and he and his band have been delivering a high level of no-frills, classy, and reconstituted American garage rock through all of it. Petty often gets lumped in with artists like Bruce Springsteen, whose careful and worked over lyrics carry a kind of instant nostalgia, but Petty†s songwriting at its best cleverly bounces off of romance clichés, often with a desperate, lustful drawl and sneer, and he†s usually more concerned with the here and now than he is about musing about what†s been abused and lost in contemporary America. Petty has always been more immediate than that -- until now, that is. Mojo is Petty†s umpteenth album, and technically, the first he†s done with the Heartbreakers since 2002†s sly The Last DJ. This time out, he†s tackling the blues, trying to graft the Heartbreakers† (Mike Campbell on guitar, Scott Thurston on guitar and harmonica, Benmont Tench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, and Steve Ferrone on drums) patented '60s garage sound to the Chicago blues sound of Chess Records in the '50s. Sonically it certainly works, mostly because this is a wonderful band, but it seems a little tired, worn, and exhausted in spots, and there†s a regretful and meditative tone to so many tracks here, which is not what one expects from a band as vital as this one. But the playing is solid, especially Campbell†s clear and precise slide guitar leads, and if things don†t always gel to the level of either the classic old Chess sides or this band†s own impressive legacy, the good news is that the group will tour it, and this is as good a rock band as there is in the land...S. At a time when rock & roll didn't care about its roots, the Georgia Satellites came crashing into the charts with a surprise hit single to remind everybody where the music had come from. The hit single, 1986's "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," rocked as hard as an old Chuck Berry song, as well as being almost as clever. The Satellites weren't a back-to-basics roots rock band, either — their straightforward sound borrowed equally from Berry, the Rolling Stones, the Faces, Little Feat, and AC/DC, with a Southern backwoods bent. At their best, the Satellites were just a damn good rock & roll band, driven by the classic yet fresh songwriting of lead singer/guitarist Dan Baird. On the strength of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," their first major-label album sold well, but the follow-up, Open All Night, did not; radio and MTV had treated the band as a kind of novelty — a bunch of hicks kicking out rock & roll offered a break between the slick pop-metal of Bon Jovi and the introspective pop of Peter Gabriel. By the time they released Open All Night in 1988, no one was interested, even if the album was only slightly weaker than the debut. After one more album, 1989's In the Land of Salvation and Sin, the band called it quits. Guitarist Rick Richards joined Izzy Stradlin's Ju Ju Hounds three years later; Baird pursued a solo career and had a small hit in late 1992 with "I Love You Period." In 1996, he helped form the Yayhoos after releasing his second solo album. The Yayhoos have two albums, the most recent being 2006's Put the Hammer Down.
