Recently I've been reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, published in 2006. It tells of a 10-year-old German girl being raised by impoverished foster parents in 1939 Nazi Germany. In this environment she learns that Communist are people to be punished. Also, as a member of Hitler Youth group, she attends a book burning because it was sympatetic to the Jews.
Reading this story reminded me of some thoughts-a jo joke, actually- that I had when viewing a documentary about Nazi Germany many years ago. It was: ' Hitler burned books but he was dealing with literate people.' I remember at other times people have eed that 'Hitler didn't have the media' bussines / capitalism has today. This in turn had me wondering if capitalist society hadn't devolved beyond the need for Hitleresque programs , and if has reached a state that makes an anachronizm of organizations such as the Americasn Legion?
Although we are told thattoday we are so fortunate to be beyond the horros of the 'McCarthy Era', e.g., blacklisting, an the infamous House Un-American activities Committee (HUAC-finally abolished in 1975), are we never reminded that by 1975 American parties of the left were near extintion. By 1975. was there any American who was not raised to believe that socialism, communism, Marxism is evil and amounts to no more than a 'totalitarian dictatorship'? Today's indoctrination on these subjects is so thoroungh, there is simpli no need to burn the works of Marx.
Although there are no annpnced govrnment program to persecute individual groups, and the government does not harass Jewish people as scapegoats for social evil, many time s workers are blamed foe inflation and job losses to other nations; welfare recipients are viewed as a taxpayer burden; the elderly entitlemen programs, e.g., Social security and Medicare , are likewise seen as a burden on taxpayers and a hidrance to (economic) growth. Illegal immigrants, who have been an important source of the agricultural workforce in the country for many years, have also been treated with hostility.
A few years ago there was some media mention of the narrowing and 'dumbing down' of the public debate. This narrowing would have to include the fallowing features in our „Beyond Hitler' era:…….“
….“ Militarism is taken for granted in today's society and is not an election issue with the R&Ds. The 700-800 billion dollar budgets passed by Congress cause lettle if any stir among the electorate or media. Moreover, many congressional districts have military weapons programs as their primary employer, and candidates as well as incumbents vie in their promisess to provide more military business. Our military prezence in 177 nation (as annunced on a televized sporting event, accompanied with fighter jet fly-by), is not only taken for granted, it is received as a source of national pride. How many Americans know why we havw a military presence in these countries or know what a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) is? Militarism is so highly develop in our country that although almost all national holidays play as „war day“, litle or nothing is said about it.
Spiking of war , although a large segment if not most of the electorate is opposed to our continued wars in the Mideast, we remain heavely involved in them……“
„…. Spyaing is also taken for granted. Remarcably, the Unitet States has 16 intelligence organizations whose budgets are classified but have been estimated as 30, or 40 and up to 75 billion dollars a year…“
…“With all this to consider, we can't afford to imagine that the Hitler era is safely behind us or that we live in vastly better times. We might be living in much more dangerous times.“
