Christian Horner: Late homecoming shouldn’t affect Red Bull

Q: Christian, how did you get back to the UK after Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix?
Christian Horner: It was a five-stop strategy. Mark Webber and I left the hotel in Shanghai at 0430 hours on Sunday morning. We got a flight from Shanghai to Dubai on Monday, then went from Dubai to Rome, arriving 2030 hours local time. We got a flight from the other Rome airport to Nice, had a night there, then got a flight early on Tuesday morning to Glasgow. I think we were one of the first aeroplanes to go over British airspace. We landed in Glasgow at 1205 hours on Tuesday, only to find out that Mark had forgotten his passport! After enjoying some local hospitality, we managed to get a helicopter transfer from Glasgow to Oxfordshire and arrived in Oxfordshire at 1600 hours on Tuesday.

Q: And how did Sebastian Vettel get home?
CH: He was lucky and managed to get a lift with Bernie Ecclestone (CEO of the Formula One Group), who I understand went to Istanbul. Sebastian got another flight from there to Nice and drove home from there - so he got home before all of us early on Tuesday morning. Predictably Bernie beat all of us back. I phoned him from Glasgow, very proud that we’d landed on British soil, only for him to say that he’d already been in the office for three hours!

Q: And what about the team’s return journey?
CH: The majority of the team stuck together. We managed to get them on a direct flight today (Thursday), which arrives in the UK later this afternoon. The cars and freight will also arrive back today, probably beating the team home by an hour or two.

Q: What impact, if any, will the delayed return of the team and freight have on preparations for the Spanish Grand Prix?
CH: Thankfully, the way the calendar is, with the extra week between the Chinese and Spanish Grand Prix, it has a very limited impact. There’s still over a week to turn the cars around and a lot of the components for the next race are produced here in the factory. The factory hasn’t been affected - obviously the turnaround components are a little bit out of sync now coming back two or three days late, but with the additional week, we’re confident it won’t cause us any major issues.

Vettel i Hamilton dobili opomenu

Chinese GP 2010: Race; Button takes victory, Vettel 6th

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

SV: “It was a difficult race - on nearly every second lap there was a car to pass or I got passed. I lost quite a bit of time with the first pit-stop, but we fought our way back and ended the race in sixth. We started on pole, with a one/two actually, but we didn’t finish there. I think today it was very chaotic and to take sixth can be quite important. Obviously our main competitors finished ahead, so that’s not nice. We struggled quite a lot in some of the conditions with the car, it was okay when we were in clean air, our pace was decent, but it’s very on and off in these conditions. It’s a lot just to maintain your track position. I had battle with Lewis (Hamilton) in the pit lane. At the stop I was ahead; I don’t know why he pulled to the left and was keen to touch me. I hoped I didn’t get a puncture from that - I don’t really understand why he did that as I was a bit ahead of him and had the advantage anyway.”

Christian Horner: “It was a very chaotic race today. Both drivers elected to stop early on when the rain came. Unfortunately Mark hit the front jack and damaged his front wing, which ultimately cost both drivers a bit of time. Then, a few laps later as the circuit dried, they ended up coming back in for slicks. Seb got out ahead of Lewis and then they rapidly caught Sutil but, as Seb was passing Sutil, Hamilton got back past him. He lost quite a lot of time at that stage during the race. After the restart, Mark got pushed wide a lost quite a few positions. We took a gamble and opted to put him onto another set of intermediates early. By doing that he was able to leapfrog the cars ahead of him. Unfortunately the tyres were very worn by the end of the race, but it elevated him from twelfth at the time to eighth. Sixth and eighth isn’t the result that we were looking for from first and second, but it is such a lottery in chaotic conditions and they are still valuable points. It’s not often you get a race like that and when you’re first and second you’ve got everything to lose, rather than everything to gain. Things went right for McLaren today, with Lewis on an identical strategy to our guys. So, well done to them and we’ll fight back at the next race.”

Najbolji događaji GP u Kini:

Borba između Vettela i Hamiltona:

Tri tjedna stanke!!!

Chinese GP 2010: Qualifying; Seb on pole position

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

SV: “It was tough today. I was not happy yesterday and this morning, as Mark was quite a bit quicker than me. We made some changes to the car in Mark’s direction, but it was still extremely difficult. I was struggling in the first sector, but then I got a purple (fastest) time in sector one on my last lap, so I think we made a good step forward! I found a better line that worked, remembering things from last year. I lost my way a little bit in free practice this morning, but I had two very good runs in Q3. I think the first would have already been a good time, but I was too wide in the last corner. The second run was better - it was a fantastic lap. We got a fourth consecutive pole position for Red Bull. We’re proving that we have a very good car, no matter what the circuit. I’m very pleased with today. Thanks to the mechanics, as they had zero lunch due to all the changes that were required between free practice and qualifying.”

Christian Horner: “I have no idea where Sebastian produced that last lap from, it was quite phenomenal. Mark was in great shape throughout qualifying today and got pipped right at the end there. So, both cars at the front of the grid again for another Red Bull one two. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race.”

Pres conferencija s troje najbržihh vozača: Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Mark Webber (Red Bull) i Fernando Alonso (Ferrari).

Q: Sebastian, three poles this season for you and four out of four for Red Bull. You are making a nice habit of winning the qualifying battle.
Sebastian Vettel: It was tough today. I was not so happy yesterday and this morning especially Mark was quite a bit quicker than me. We did some changes, so we went a little bit in Mark’s direction. It was extremely difficult and I was struggling in the first sector especially but now going out of qualifying I was purple in sector one, so I think we did a good step forward. I found a better line in the end, remembering last year a little bit. I think I lost the way a little bit in free practice. But I had two very good runs in Q3. In the last corner in the first run I was a little bit too wide, otherwise it would have been a very good time, but the second one was just a bit better everywhere and it was a fantastic lap. As you said, fourth consecutive pole position for Red Bull. We have proved that we have a very fast car and it seems independent of the circuit type we are always able to be up there, so I am very, very pleased with the day. Especially thanks to the mechanics as they had zero lunch as we required a lot of changes. They had to work from the end of free practice to qualifying, so thanks for that. Let’s see tomorrow. It might be wet, so let’s see.

Q: Sebastian, the race tomorrow. We might see rain. It could be a very interesting race. Will you be looking into your mirrors for your team-mate going into the first turn?
SV: Well, I think it will be raining tomorrow, it is just a question when really. Similar to the last two races. Bahrain was pretty straightforward, but we are not afraid of any rain. But for Sunday it looks quite bad if you look at the weather. It will rain, the question is will it be wet the whole race throughout or after the start at some point, so we will see but we have good memories to the wet conditions last year, both of us. If the rain comes it is best to start at the front, which we do, as you are the ones who see the best, so that is quite important. So no matter what, dry or wet, we should be well armed for tomorrow.

Q: Sebastian, looking at last year, looking at form this year, you must be very, very confident for tomorrow, particularly it was wet last year and it is likely to be wet tomorrow.
SV: Well, I mean you are asking a lot of questions. We will have to see. It is a long race. The most important thing today was to do a good job which I think we did to bring the cars to the front row. For myself, I am extremely happy as especially this morning I wasn’t happy with the car and I was struggling myself in a couple of corners and lost quite a lot compared to Mark. But into quali(fying) the mechanics worked flat out from the end of P3 to the start of the qualifying session and we just got the car ready and it turned out to work. I am very pleased with the result. As I said, I was struggling a bit to find the right balance in the beginning of the qualifying as the car was different and I had to adapt, but I think in Q3 I had two very good runs. The first run in the last corner I went a bit too wide and lost quite a bit but the second run I was able to reproduce the lap, even a bit quicker everywhere, so I am very happy with the lap I did. A very good result. As you said, tomorrow it will rain. You will probably have to ask some of the local people, they know a bit more, but the good thing is that it doesn’t get colder tomorrow. I think Wednesday and Thursday was pretty cold, so it shouldn’t get colder but still it will rain, the questions like the last three races is when. It could be a wet race, a wet start or a dry start and then rain at some point. We will see. It is a good result today but the race is the important and where you score points, so most important is yet to come.

Q: Give us some idea of the changes you have made over the last couple of days as it sounds like it has been quite a lot?
SV: Well, the last couple of days, we only ran yesterday and today. Yesterday I was more or less happy. We did some overnight changes and initially this morning we thought that they worked. You are always fighting the car but Mark was quite a bit quicker and partly we went a little bit towards his direction with the car settings but also I had to find lap time myself as I wasn’t up to speed especially in the first sector. In quali at some point you know, you can see if you compare the data and so on, what probably the other guy is doing, but it is not easy to do just the same. In the end you are not a copy of someone else. We are both individuals and everyone does it a bit differently. I am sure if we would look into Fernando’s data then we would see he is doing it his way and still it turns out we are a couple of hundredths. I remembered a bit of last year, obviously it worked well last year here and finally at the right time in Q3 it seemed to work.

Q: In the middle sector you seemed to be a little bit down but ended with a margin of a quarter-of-a-second ahead of Mark. What happened in the middle sector?
SV: I don’t think I was a lot down. I think it was only a couple of thousandths.

Q: Was it? Okay.
SV: I mean it was basically the same but in the end I managed to put everything together. It is extremely difficult. A bit too much here and there, especially in those type of corners, turn one, two three, then the exit three/four, and the corner on the back straight. It is very easy to go just a bit too much and then you run a little bit wide, then you lose so much time. I am quite happy it worked in the end.

Q: (Carlos Miquel - Diario AS) I have a question for all the drivers about the volcano; are you worried about getting back to Europe?
FA: No worries, I hope to get back to Europe normally.
SV: I will rent a car and drive back.
MW: Yeah, I’m in the same car as Seb, we’re going back together. Or I go to Australia, I keep going this way.
FA: You swim.
MW: I keep going this way.
SV: One stop.
MW: I can keep going that way.
FA: You can swim.

Q: (Chinese media) Two questions for Sebastian: first question is that it seems that you have become the new superstar of Formula One, especially in Germany, as people think Michael Schumacher is out of date. What do you think of that?
SV: Fantastic question! I don’t consider myself as a superstar. It’s more the famous politicians and pop stars. I see myself as a racing driver, something that I have been dreaming of since I was young. It’s nice to be here, part of Formula One, and obviously it’s even much nicer when you sit here, so I really enjoy what I’m doing and I’m proud to be next to guys like Fernando, Mark, whosoever. For sure, in Germany, the greatness of Michael is untouched. I know that I’m German, I know that I come from Germany but it would be quite ridiculous to compare myself – at the stage that I am now – with someone like Michael. He’s a legend, he’s one of the best the sport has ever seen. There’s obviously a long way to go. I think, as everyone else, I try to do the best for myself and we are all individuals, so that’s the only thing I can say really.

Q: (Chinese media) OK, you haven’t been in Formula One long; what have you learned from your success or failure and do you think you have grown up?
SV: Well, if you compare me to Michael as you did before, I’m a greenhorn, you know? I’ve only been here for three or three and a half years, it’s not a long time.
MW: It’s taken him three years to grow this (fingers Sebastian’s fluffy chin).
SV: I have to keep my visor closed, otherwise it’s gone! I’m obviously not the oldest on the grid. At the moment, as I said, I’m enjoying what I’m doing a lot. I don’t know where we will be in five, ten years. At the moment, I would say hopefully in Formula One if teams sign me. You never know. Formula One changes quickly as does life, so things can change quickly.

Q: (Marco Degl’Innocenti - La Gazzetta dello Sport) Sebastian, just continuing the question before: you are very modest but are you conscious that you are already the man of the year, the man of this world championship?
SV: Definitely not. We’ve had four races, I think all of us up here have to stay on the ground, you know. Everything can still happen. Just before we came here, I read that some people don’t think that it’s still a fight within four teams, but I think it is. We’ve had three races, if you look at the points it could be zero as well, at least at the top, there’s not much difference. You see how quickly things change. I’ve had two failures this year; once I was lucky still to finish. Fernando, just before the end of the race in Malaysia had to retire, so things can happen, as I said, and they can change quickly, so you have to be there consistently until the last race in Abu Dhabi and then you see who has got the most points. When there are only a couple of races left, you can see who is probably fighting for the championship and who is not mathematically, but right now everyone can still win, so there’s a long, long way. Not only us but also the teams have to push to make sure that you stay at the top. If you don’t move forwards in Formula One it’s like going backwards. I think it’s still very early.

SV: “That was good, we had no big issues and the car was working fine. We did quite a lot of laps so it was a solid day. It looks very close; the Mercedes look competitive, as well as the McLarens and Ferraris. It will be tight tomorrow, but we will see. I had a good race here in 2007 when I finished fourth for Toro Rosso and then last year with the victory, so there are a lot of good emotions and memories attached to this place.”

Btw izgleda da Kineski fanovi F1 nisu baš nek fanovi Alonsa, baš kao i ja :)

Q&A with Sebastian Vettel:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Q: Will McLaren's F-duct system benefit the British team at this track?
SV: It helps, not only here but everywhere. Of course with such a long straight it is even more magic. This morning I had a good opportunity to see it at work myself, when I was running behind Jenson. Normally on a long straight you would stay patient and calm, and at the end of the straight, try to pass him. But in the middle of the straight he just left me, as if I was standing still.

Q: Is graining a problem here?
SV: Look around! Everybody is still wearing warm jackets. That means it is still pretty cold, which makes it difficult to bring the tyres up to temperature, so graining is an issue. We have to see what the conditions will be on Sunday, but one is obvious - tyres have a hard life at this track.

Q: Are bumps an issue?
SV: Yes, especially in Turn One, where there is a substantial bump that slightly gets in your way. It doesn’t matter if you are on high or low fuel.

Q: How satisfied are you with your Friday running?
SV: Well, it was quite a good day today. We enjoyed good running with no issues or problems with the car. So, yes, I would call it a positive day.

Q: Is sitting in the Red Bull almost a guarantee that you’ll win the race?
SV: I am only 22 but I have already learnt that there are no guarantees in life, so we still have to work hard. Yes, we do have one of the best cars and that is something that we can be proud of. Today it looked very close. Apart from McLaren nobody is running the F-duct - yet. At least none that work as well as the McLaren one. Hopefully we will have something similar soon.

Q: How relieved were you to win in Malaysia?
SV: Well, it is always nice to come to the next race with a win under your belt. It’s that extra bit of self confidence that can enable you to do even better. We could say that it ‘gives you wings’, like it says on our team gear.

Q: Last year you won this race, you must have fond memories…
SV: I have indeed very good memories, not only from last year’s victory but also my P4 in 2007 in a Toro Rosso. It’s obviously a track that has suited me, so let’s see on Sunday if it is still valid!

Chinese GP 2010: Free Practice 1

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Rezultati 1. slobodnog treninga:

Chinese GP 2010: Thursday in Shanghai; flight problems, pics & interview

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Red Bull Racing također razvija F-duct sistem

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Red Bull Racingova baza u Milton Kynesu intenzivno priprema svoju interpretaciju F-duct sistema, odnosno dihalice koju je u Formulu 1 prije nekoliko mjeseci uveo McLaren.
"Mnogi bolidi, uključujući i našeg, su redizajnirani oko dvostrukog difuzora.

Vettel Q&A: We've proved what the RB6 can do

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Q: Even though your team mate was on pole, you ended up winning the race…
Sebastian Vettel: In qualifying Mark had the poker face, and truly deserved pole position. For me, the most important thing was to have a good start. I was patient and tried to avoid wheel spin, which was the right thing to do. Then it was a long sprint towards Turn One where I used Mark’s tow and was able to dive in from the inside. But amongst team mates you are always a bit more careful - it does look very stupid on TV if you crash into your team mate’s car. In the end I think both of us tried to respect each other. During the race Mark was behind me all the time and kept pushing me, trying to push me into a mistake. There were stages when he was quicker, and at other times I was quicker. But in the end, when you are leading you are able to listen to your tyres, dictate your own pace and also react to what the guy behind is doing.

Q: At the start, did your intuition take over or was it a planned strategy?
SV: For me basically everything is more about intuition. Of course you can plan for any kind of situation, but looking back you realize that you just react to what is going on around you. You concentrate on the lights at first, and once they go off, you try to get away as quickly as possible. As Nico (Rosberg) mentioned, he pushed a bit too hard. I did the opposite, knowing I was on the dirty side of the track. I gave it a little time and pushed the throttle with patience. Coming down into Turn One, I came out of the slipstream, and then had to decide when the right time to attack was.

Q: Were you concerned about your car’s reliability at any point?
SV: Not really. I might have thought that I was really happy with the car and prayed that it would last for the next 20 laps. But there are so many other thoughts. I would say that we have proved what our car can do when it holds together. And to be fair, the failures that we had at the first two races were very rare and unlucky.

Q: It’s looking very tight in the driver standings at the moment. Do you think it will stay so tight all season?
SV: Yes for sure. We have seen how quickly things can change from one race to another. We had the pace this weekend, and we deserved this result especially after the first two races. It feels good to be back. Even though we don’t need this kind of motivation in the team, as everyone loves what they are doing. But still, these results remind you why you are here.

Q: Towards the end of the race, you tried to lap Lotus's Jarno Trulli but you suddenly held back…
SV: There was a yellow flag out, because Fernando (Alonso) had pulled off the track. Under yellow flags you are not allowed to overtake, but then Jarno was slowing down to allow me to pass. That was quite a critical situation, as I had to pace myself until the green flag was out again. Of course, in terms of the race, it would have been more exciting if the gap between Mark and myself was closer, but I had a good lead so I had the luxury of being able to waste a few seconds.

Malaysian GP 2010: Race; Vettel predvodi dvostruku pobjedu Red Bull

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

U svakom slučaju Petrov je imao dosta dobru utrku i dva-tri zanimljiva dvoboja, no nažalost nije dobro završila.

SV: "What a day! At the start, I realised that I had a good start past Nico (Rosberg). I was then able to gain on Mark (Webber); it’s a long sprint down to Turn 1 and I had an advantage, so I took the chance into Turn 1 and just made it through! Mark had a better exit out of Turn 2 though Turn 3, but it was very slippery and we both tried to push. We are here to fight, but you should always keep respect and I think we both had respect for each other. If Mark had been in my position I’m sure he would have done the same. After that it was a question of getting away from our competitors. I could see that Mark and I had the same pace - he was a little quicker in the beginning, but I was trying to save my tyres so I could pull away before the stop. The second stint was extremely long and it’s very hot here - I didn’t stop sweating. It’s very physical and at some stages I was hoping for rain just to get a bit of a cool down! Yesterday was extremely difficult with the conditions, but today it stayed dry. We have a magnificent car and the key once again was to pace yourself and watch your tyres. Bridgestone did a good job bringing two compounds here that worked well. It’s a very good result for us after two races where we didn’t finish where we wanted. Thanks to the team - it’s crucial not to panic in that moment and stay relaxed as it’s a long season. Sitting here on Sunday afternoon after finishing in first position is the best result we can get. On top of that, Mark is in second place. It’s a big plus for the team and a lot of points for us, I’m very, very happy.”

Christian Horner: “A fantastic team performance. The race ultimately came down to the first 500 metres; both drivers had excellent starts. Sebastian got the inside line into Turn 1,
Mark gave him enough space and they fought each other through Turn 2 and into Turn 3. That was the difference between them today, they matched each other tenth for tenth in pace and it was great to see the team achieve a faultless one two finish. It’s been a huge amount of hard work. Obviously we’ve had frustrations in the first two races, but the team has stayed focused. We’ve had tremendous support from the factory this weekend and people gave up their Easter to ensure that our cars had the best opportunity for finishing at arguably one of the toughest races. Both cars behaved impeccably, so it puts us right back in the championship and gives everyone a lot of confidence.”

Press Conference:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Pres konferencija s troje najboljih na VN Malezije: Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Mark Webber (Red Bull) i Nico Rosberg (Mercedes GP).

Q: Sebastian, a victory today set up by an excellent start and one that looked fairly comfortable if you ever can be comfortable in the heat of Malaysia.
Sebastian Vettel: Well, it wasn’t comfortable. I realised straight away that I had a good start and passed Nico, who was alongside, and then got the tow from Mark, so I was able to gain, gain, gain. It is a long sprint down to turn one and I clearly had an advantage over him and then I took the chance I had into turn one. It was quite late, so I just made it and then Mark had a bit of a better exit out of turn two, through turn three and it is very slippery and we both tried to push. We are here to fight ourselves but you should keep the respect and I think we both had the respect for each other. If Mark would have been in my position I am quite sure he would have done the same. After that it was just a question about getting away from our competitors. I could see Mark and I were more or less having the same pace, I think he was a little bit quicker in the beginning. I was trying to save my tyres. It did work, so before the stop I could pull away a little bit and the second stint was extremely long. It is extremely hot here and I didn’t stop sweating. Fortunately, I didn’t run out of drinks in the car. I was trying not to be too extreme in the beginning. But it is very hot and very physical and at some stage I was hoping for rain, just to get a bit of a cool down. What a day. Yesterday was extremely difficult with the conditions. Today it stayed dry all the time fortunately and we had a magnificent car. The key was to pace yourself, watch your tyres. Bridgestone did a good job bringing two compounds here that worked fairly well. A very good result for us, especially for myself after two races where we didn’t finish where we wanted to be. To come back, thanks to the team. It is very crucial in that moment not to panic and to stay relaxed. It is a long season but getting here on Sunday afternoon having won the race is the best result we can get. On top of that Mark in second place is a big, big plus for the team. A lot of points and I am very, very happy.

Q: Sebastian, how much of a relief was that after the last couple of races?
SV: A big relief. I am sorry. I feel a bit tipsy from the champagne. I think I took a bit too much. I am very pleased. A great day for us and Red Bull. As you said, the first two races we weren’t finishing where we want to be. But a great result. The start for myself was crucial. I had a good start, good initial momentum. I was a bit worried to start on the dirty side as the right side is the clean side but I was patient really trying to control the wheelspin and didn’t ask for too much throttle too early. That was the key to get past Nico and then run with big tow down to turn one. It is a long sprint. It is one of the longest sprints to turn one behind Mark and I was able to catch him and outbrake him into turn one. It was quite late. Big respect for Mark. I think he would have done the same thing. But he could have behaved differently down into turn one and turn two but that was good. The fight carried on down to turn four. It was extremely slippery for both of us and it was a question who is braking first and if the car stops. Obviously going out of qualifying it was wet, but usually you are having a completely different reference point. Now you start with the car fully filled and it is a bit of an adventure to find your braking point. From then onwards I could see we were one-two which was crucial, so we were able to pull a gap to Nico. But Mark didn’t stop pushing, so I had to push myself. I was trying to look after my tyres in the first stint especially with the soft compound. I was quite pleased that they held together. I was trying to save them a little bit for the end of the stint and then the hard tyres were quite solid and you could push all the way through. Mark again did not stop pushing. He came a bit closer and I could see he was doing faster lap times than I was, so I was just trying to control the gap. It was quite difficult with the lapped cars as they were coming quicker than you thought. Over the team radio I got the call that at some stage we were about 10 seconds quicker a lap compared to them which is funny as two laps before you had nobody there and then all of a sudden you catch them up. But in the end of the day very, very pleased with the result. I think we did a very good job yesterday as a team. Mark was the poker face yesterday and got the pole but today to finish one-two is fantastic especially for myself after the first two races, so I am very happy.

Q: Mark held onto you pretty much in the opening stages but in the second stint he came back at you. Was that all to do with the traffic?
SV: When you are in the lead and you have got a couple of seconds on your side then you don’t try to do anything stupid in traffic. For the guys I think in the slower cars it is a pretty difficult job to do as three corners before they had no-one in their mirror and all of sudden they had someone behind, so sometimes you find yourself in a bit of an adventure trying to get past. But they did a very good job. Sometimes you lose a little bit more depending on where you have to pass them and how quickly they move over but it was all fairly in control. On the primes in the beginning Mark was a bit faster. I was just trying to react to his times and then the gaps are sometimes shrinking, sometimes I am gaining a bit again. I was trying to bring the car home at some stage. I was hoping for rain as it was quite hot. I think we all lost quite a bit of water, so that is why after two sips of champagne you might feel a bit dizzy. I am still young. I am not used to this.

Q: (Paolo Ianieri – La Gazzetta dello Sport) Sebastian, it only took you one race to wipe out the gap to Massa and Alonso, who were quite far ahead. Were you expecting to do that so quickly?
MW: The championship is over, isn’t it? I thought the championship was over!
SV: Yeah, that’s what people are saying. We are just here to race. Yes, as I said before, obviously there’s always a lot of talking and things happening. Yes, we didn’t have great races, the first and second one, we didn’t do the best job we could, but that’s life. You build racing cars to go as quickly as you can. They’re built on the limit and sometimes something breaks. Obviously it depends when. When it happens on Friday, no one cares but if it happens on Sunday, obviously everyone is highlighting the issue and blaming you for poor reliability. We are a team, we stick together in good and bad times. We win and lose together and it’s not like in football where you probably change the coach after you’ve lost two times. So we carry on and we’ve proven that we can come back. I don’t know the ranking in the championship now but I think today we scored 25 points. I saw that Fernando (Alonso) had an engine failure, I think, on the last lap. As far as I remember, our gap was about 25 points, so it’s not anymore. I think that’s a good thing. If anything, it shows how quickly it can turn around. It’s a long, long season. We still have 16 races to go which is a lot, so we are here to do our best and we want to fight for the championship, both of us, and for the team, so at the end of the day, finishing first and second was good points for the team and good points for ourselves, so I think we’re in a much better position now than probably on Friday or this morning.

Q: (Heikki Kulta – Turun Sanomat) Sebastian, last year you won the third race, and this year you’ve now won the third race. Are you on the same schedule like last year, to carry on fighting for the championship?
SV: I need to remember where we finished the fourth race and the fifth race. Last year is last year, this year is this year. I think we are always looking ahead but you can live in history or you can live in the future, but I think the best thing is to live in the now and live the moment, so we have to focus on what is happening now. From here, first of all we go back and then kind of come back to Asia to go to China. The cars go more or less straight there, but there’s a bit of break between races. And hopefully we will have the same result in China as last year, that’s all I can say. Every race is a new challenge. Into the first race, I think we were pretty quick. Ferrari was very quick and in Melbourne all of a sudden we were kind of back. They weren’t really that far behind in Bahrain but it just shows that a slightly different kind of track, a different layout… you know, we’ve seen here Mercedes was very strong, so we probably do have a little bit of an advantage at the time, but we have to work hard and focus on what is happening now to maintain the good performance and then we go race by race. There may be times when we will struggle as well and we won’t be able to win. We might only get fourth or fifth but we have to make sure we finish fourth or fifth then, and not put the car in the wall or finish eighth or out of the points. I think that’s how it should work.

Q: (Livio Oricchio – O Estado de Sao Paulo) To Vettel and Webber, if we’d had a normal qualifying yesterday with Ferrari and McLaren closer to your team, do you think the result of the race would have been the same?
MW: No. It was a luxury today, for Seb and I, not to have to kill the engines, kill the tyres, kill everything because the gap to the other guys was more comfortable, no question about it. But Nico drove a good race, but I think there were some quicker guys, maybe particularly Lewis, who had a different day, starting at the back. Tactically the race could have been a little bit different if he was around, or Fernando or Felipe (Massa). I obviously didn’t see how their race went. Obviously Fernando didn’t finish at the end. As Jack Brabham used to say: ‘win at the slowest possible speed.’ One second or thirty seconds is the same result. We were very much in control of today’s race. It’s not always going to be like that but when it is, you have to make the most of it.
SV: Not much to add. Walter Röhrl once said that he’s not interested in winning a rally by one second having had a close fight. He wants to destroy the others and win by a minute, so two great drivers, one in rallying, one in Formula One, but I think that in the end, especially here, the result is obviously most important for us. We got good points. As Mark said, it probably wasn’t the easiest race for Ferrari and McLaren, but still, it was a long hot race and first you have to go out and do it.

Malaysian GP 2010: Qualifying; Webber pole position, Seb 3rd

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

SV: “Good job to Mark today. It was very tricky at the start of Q3, there was a lot of water and it was the right thing to call the red flag - it was just impossible. I think there was too much water - the cars are quite low, so you end up swimming more than driving. In Q3 I think we did the right thing putting on extremes. The water disappeared quicker than the majority of people thought and Mark was on the better tyre in the end, but I think third is a good result for the team. It was a tricky session – it was important to get into the next round and then qualify as high up as we could, which we did. It’s a shame as I had some moments on my fastest lap - I was close to Nico (Rosberg), only about one tenth off I think, but if you look back there wasn’t that much margin. I think we can be very pleased with third today and everything is possible tomorrow.”

Press Conference:

Q: Sebastian, take us through Q3 from your perspective. Mark, for once, had the better of you.
Sebastian Vettel: Yeah, I said straight after the qualifying ‘good job, poker face.’ I think in the end we made the right call. It was very tricky at the start of Q3. There was a lot of water and it was the right thing to get the red flag out as it was just impossible for all of us. There was just too much water. The cars are quite low, so you end up swimming more than driving. But then I think in Q3 we did the right thing. It turned out that the water disappeared quicker than the majority of people thought and Mark was on the better tyre at the end. But, nevertheless, third is a very good position and result for us and the team and everything is possible tomorrow, so as they said already it was a very tricky session and I think it was much more important to get into the next round and qualify as high up as we can, which we did. Shame I had some moment in the fastest lap. I was very close to Nico. I think only about one-tenth, but if you look back there wasn’t that much margin either, so we can be very pleased with third today.

Q: Sebastian, happy to be third on the grid?
SV: I’m happy.

Q: Two poles so far, happier with the car this morning?
SV: Yeah, I think we did a step forward overnight and looking… they’ve said it all, really. It was a pretty chaotic qualifying today, up and down. As we saw in Q1 some of the favourites got thrown out going into qualifying. In the end, I think the most important thing was to get into the next round safely which I think we did. Overall, I think we were very consistent. The pace was there. In the end, I think third is a very good result, so I’m happy. There was not much gap missing to the next best car on wets, to Nico, I think about a tenth but also if you look back I think there was plenty of margin, so overall a good day I think. Obviously Mark was the poker face today and made the right decision at the right time. I honestly thought that going into Q3 that that’s (intermediates) a little bit too risky and as we have seen, the majority of people went out on wets. I think that looking back, we did the right thing.

Q: (Mike Doodson) Sebastian, there have been a number of explanations for the problem you had in Melbourne, even to the extent of one of your suppliers issuing a statement to say it wasn’t responsible. Can you tell us what did go wrong and are there any new and/or different parts on your car as a result?
SV: It’s a difficult one to explain. Initially it felt like a braking failure, so that’s what we said straight after the race but it turned out not to be anywhere linked to the brakes, so the brakes were working fine, so Brembo did a good job. Sorry for the call on Sunday afternoon last week. But it turned out to be a problem with the… basically we lost the ability to transmit power or torque to the wheel. Accelerating is not a big issue because the wheels just get quicker, but as you know, we have brakes everywhere, on every single wheel on the car and to stop the car, you rely on every single brake you have, so on all four wheels, to work and on the left front, as I said, we lost the ability to transmit torque. When I was hitting the brakes, down to turn 13, all the brakes worked but the left front wheel kept on running, so that in the end I was kind of braking on three wheels, which, when you set your reference point, doesn’t really work, so that was the failure. As a consequence, we obviously had to understand why this happened, and I think we did, so we’re confident that we haven’t got any problems with that any more. I think we tidied things up a bit, so I think we know why it happened and we understood the problem, so it shouldn’t happen again, as I said. We haven’t really got new parts but trimmed a bit.

Q: (Michael Schmidt - Auto, Motor und Sport) Sebastian, you were the only one of the top teams who went out immediately in Q1 and Nico waited quite a long time, like many others, which almost caught you out like the Ferraris and Hamilton. First of all, why did you go out early, and for Nico, were you getting nervous in the garage when you saw the others driving and you were being held back by the team?
NR: I wasn’t getting nervous because there was no more rain for the rest of Q1 according to the forecast. That nearly caught us out, we were lucky to get through.
SV: In the end, you decide as a team. Obviously, looking back it was definitely the right choice. We wanted to wait for longer but then obviously it makes sense to go out and set a lap, no matter what, because you don’t know what to expect. You don’t know which tyre is going to work in which conditions. We had zero experience in free practice, so that for Mark and for myself it was the same call. Obviously we wanted to go out and have a look and that turned out to be the right thing.
NR: I think also the main problem was with that forecast, that with these specific types of clouds it’s very difficult to see them coming sometimes and they just pop out, so that’s one of the difficulties I guess.

Malaysian GP 2010: Free Practice 3

Malaysian GP 2010: Free Practice 2

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

SV: “Some small issues for me today, but nothing big. Mark unfortunately had to stop and couldn’t finish the practice, it looks like his engine went. I wasn’t 100 percent happy today, I think we still need to get a little bit quicker. The McLarens and the Mercedes look quick and Ferrari have a decent long run pace, so we’ll have to see where we are. This circuit is one of the tougher ones here due to the hot and humid conditions.”

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
