In order to check your PD for online ordering of eyeglasses you could take ruler and get real close to the mirror and measure up the distance (that is if you cant get the local optometry store to tell you for free your PD).
To double check, you could do this: take a sheet of paper and put two dots on it, the distance between them should be the PD (pupilary distance) you think is right. Make the dots about one cm from the edge of the paper. Then take a hole punch and punch two holes, each centered at one of the dots (you can draw an x through the dots, if this helps line up the punch). Hold the paper up, look through the holes at a distant object. It should look like there's only one hole. If not, remeasure and try again (you can move the holes closer together by bending the paper as you look through, and if this makes things better you'll be decreasing your PD, otherwise increasing).

Also, there is normally a 3mm difference between the PD for near vision glasses and the PD for far vision. I gather that you should reduce the PD you've determined using the above by 3mm if you're ordering reading-only specs.

Now all I need is for the doctor to tell me my dioptre without any fuss that I am not going to buy eyeglasses in his store.
