Yap, it's a great theme - so much so that it's the second time Bob's come to the theme - and it’s a great mix of songs and bon-mots in this episode. We start with a female rebuke to Prince Buster’s Ten Commandments by one Helen Fleming from 1966. We get some other obscure stuff from the likes of The Honey Bears, The Carlisles, and the rather strange Cocktails For Two by Spike Jones. I thought Spike was too busy making dumb Charlie Kaufman movies to release an album of 1940’s songs! I loved the Jacqueline Taieb song 7 in the Morning. Those French Chanteuses sound so fucking sexy! And Jackie did look rather fine back in the day! Wonder if Bob ‘bumped’ into her then! Who knew that deciding what shirt to wear could make for a great single!! There’s the seminal Sun Ra and Rev. Utah Smith as well as a great James Brown transformation of a rather staid number. A great track too from Charlie Feathers – Bob’s a huge fan obviously. Elvis C is here again. Second week in a row! Seems there’s a bit of a Bob love-in there! (I know they've been touring the States together). Anyway, it’s from back when EC was good. It's the classic Less Than Zero, and better still, the rare ‘Dallas’ version thereof. Jazz Source.: CDDA Encoder: LAME 3.97 VBR Quality: mp3 VBRkbps 44,1kHz Joint-Stereo RipDate: Nov-20-2007 r e l e a s e_n o t e s Whilst their first LP, ‘Songs for my Funeral’, was full of hip hop and beat influences, the second, ‘The Garden’, revealed Nostalgia 77’s mastermind (Ben Lamdin) serious intentions as a jazz musician, composer and arranger. ‘Weapons of Jazz Destruction’ takes things further in this direction. Where ‘The Garden’ featured a willfully rough and ready recording style with nods to afrofunk and soul including the attention grabbing cover of “Seven Nation Army” with Alice Russell, this latest album is a much smoother and more polished production and sits firmly in the jazz arena. The Fender Rhodes has been replaced throughout by piano giving the whole record a more classic sound and, as always, the horn arrangements are outstanding. The overall feeling is melancholic, bringing in Ethiopian modal jazz influences into tracks like “Musical Silt”, and Spanish melodies in the opening track “Chola”. This unique blend of heavy funk, hip-hop based beats, dusty old jazz, obscuro funk and psych bits and pieces should be appealing for the old school and the NuJazz heads alike. ~ REDRUM is the nonelectronic sidegroup of DRUM since we felt that we have more to contribute than electronic music.
