With a name like Team Ugly, one wouldn’t have expected much from the gang of Zagreb misfits – with a range of abilities and experience, it was understood that it was going to be a tough weekend. Despite these odds, Ugly came out with a lot of energy and excitement early Saturday morning; the weather was beautiful and we didn’t start play until 10:20, it was a splendid combination!



Game One against Hallodigaz-e? provided a wonderful opportunity for us to establish “our flow” for the weekend. It was immediately evident that Inferno’s precise disc placement on the field would prove invaluable and Bomba’s handler movement would put Ugly is a solid position to score. Filip and Andrea were relatively young compared to the rest of the competition so these two took dominant roles as cutters – Filip honing his deep reads over the weekend. Ruki was back on the frizbi field after a long hiatus, but his solid mid-range cuts and help with handling proved that he hadn’t forgotten all of Champ’s training sessions. Ninja managed to juggle organizational duties and cool-as-a-cucumber handling duties.



The game against Vertigo was frustrating as all the pieces were there, but we just couldn’t quite connect it all. I am rather convinced that we had just as many throws into the end zone as the other team but catches just weren’t there. Unfortunately, this became the theme for the weekend. Game three against Cosmo-Disc brought the team’s one win for the weekend due to a forfeit due to a lack of women on the other team. Despite the forfeit, we played out the game to a disappointing loss by two. The highlight of this game was Filip tripping in the end zone and then sitting up in time to catch the disc for a score. Between games, Bomba claimed the cactus in the kiddie pool which provided amusement for all. The final game of the day was by far the most frustrating as we ended up losing by two against a savage Catchup team. Time was not on our side in this game – a strong rally at the end of the game proved insufficient to pull off the win. Four games in the hot weather plus the intensity made this an emotional game for both sides. Withstanding these frustrations, both teams were able to come together at the end in a spirited circle.



Inga, Mama, and Andrea changed out of our Ugly for Chicks shirts to join the Zagreb force against the international consortium of women all-stars. Chicks went up 2-1 before Andrea dislocated her pinky finger while bidding for a disc in the end zone. Andrea headed to the hospital while Chicks was defeated 3-5.



Ugly made an impressive showing at the party on Saturday night. Although no one was able to keep up with Dario’s (Good) wing-eating abilities or Iva’s (Bad) drinking abilities, the team held it together well past midnight. Inferno and Mama hit a respectable number of tequila shots compared to the rest of the teams – even if it wasn’t a victory.

Sunday was trouble for the team – with Andrea on the sideline and the legendary Ogi Livada reinforcing Zagreb’s Bad team, Ugly had its work cut out for itself. Max had a nice catch and Filip had some nice bids. Inga and Mama suddenly were forced to play almost every point; they stepped up to the pressure marvelously and contributed substantially to the team. Inga’s flicks were crisper than ever by the end of the weekend, and Mama displayed patience in the handler role after the Women’s All Star game. Inferno’s throws were dead-on but a few too many drops ended the game 8-9. The final game was a re-match against Cosmo-Disc for 9th place, and their superior fitness and speed carried the game in their favor (although their lack of women meant they forfeited the game again).



The record for the team may appear dismal but all of the games were a delight to play as each player made significant gains this weekend. The tournament organizers should all be profusely thanked as everything went off without a hitch.

Wild Wild West 2's runner up was Team Good, featuring the strongest ever roster of all-Zagreb ultimate players ultimate. We turned inward to develop a deeper team for a stronger program. We strengthened all parts of the roster. We defeated Budapest-based rival Hallod 11-6 in the semi, falling to the Slovenian neighbors Frizmi by a single goal in the finals.

Strong performances by our women stand out – Sticky, Mirna, Ines and Banana.



Day 1 Team 1: Pool play victory vs. Freebees. Their young, energetic team battled to three one-point losses on the weekend, including to us. We came out a bit sloppy, but recovered, powered by Živac's explosive deep cuts – just in time for a victory.

Day 1 Team 2: Pool play victory vs. FDKZ Team Bad. We know and love these guys, who were led by the very naughty Marta Mrak. A spirited game with tight defense and a number of good 'drive the bike' cone cuts for goals. Congratulations to them on their later victory in The Bad and The Ugly grudge match.



Day 1 Team 3: Pool play loss vs. Frizmi. We stuck to our gameplan, substituting more evenly than usual in such a tight matchup, and we kept the game close until halftime. The opponents ran a smooth rotation focusing on their starters and shying away from the women's matchups. By the end of the game they ran away with it, taking a victory. Major highlight was Jan throwing deep to Sticky for a key deep goal. We seem to be strengthening our spirit reputation further. There were, on the other hand, some questionable calls on the other side, very similar to last year. We discussed it in the spirit circle afterward.

Day 1 Team 4: Pool play victory vs. Beary Bears. These guys are real up-and-comers. You look at their athleticism and their level of energy and commitment to improvement and just feel a sense of excitement at the great potential. They came out with the strongest game plan possible against us – a slow, sagging zone to minimize our speed advantage. Nevertheless, our chilly offense prevailed.



Party: I fell asleep at dinner. Missed the party. You'll have to ask someone else.

Day 2 Team 1: Quarterfinal victory vs. Catchup. The pool play loss dropped us into second place in the pool, thus missing the opportunity for a bye straight into the semis. Against Catchup, I have to say we were a bit surprised at (1) how hard they were still running after a full day of playing with no subs and (2) at the effective cutting of both relative beginners and grizzled veterans. They played a zone against us as well, and though they could not contain our break mark throws, they were highly efficient and effective on offense, even going deep a number of times against our strongest deep defenders. It took until the second half for us to pull away, with Ines the goal-scoring machine.



Day 2 Team 2: Semifinal victory vs. Hallod. This was probably our best match, in the sense that we were nearly mistake-free, in a game against a legitimately strong club. Powered by our sometime teammate, Pikaču, and a wily American handler, Daniel Glasscock, the Hallod offense breaks the mark with inside-out throws and waits for those breaks...then, it's off to the races, tossing it to their big guy like Akos. Banana came out in this game with what was almost a spectacular block against Pikaču, but which in fact was more of a tackle. Oops! Regardless, her defense set the tone and we took off, shutting down their inside-out throws and running a smooth split-stack offense.



Day 2 Team 3: Final loss vs. Frizmi. Defensive intensity was the name of the game. Vid started the game with a similar play as Banana's earlier play against Pikaču. Damian, from Frizmi, responded very well, taking advantage of the play and moving the disc down the field with no bother to call a foul. Both teams made uncharacteristic unforced turnovers in this game, exposing some lack of fitness down the stretch. Still, a battle. Despite the pressure to run a tight rotation of starters, we consistently brought everyone into the game, and our younger players began to get a taste for the big-game atmosphere. Mirna especially stands out in winning her matchups. It has to be said that there was one very questionable spirit play, in which the other side held onto a stalled disc, preventing us from going deep for a goal. We hope this sort of thing never happens again, and we demand better behavior from our players. Regardless, the game came down to a stall-7 heave downfield, and after a strong team defensive shutdown, a great catch sealed the deal for our opponents. This brought our total Wild Wild West championship totals even at one.



Now it's time for some well-deserved rest.

Frki, Davor, Darija, and all the other organizers of the tournament did an awesome job. Wild Wild West is the best. Our experience on Team Good was awesome – good fields, good tournament format, etc. We walked away with a strong performance and a deeper roster. And, I hope, a renewed understanding of what we want to do with the leading edge of our program. We got to the finals of WWW2, within one point of winning – imagine the excellence that could be just around the corner.

The question for this group of 10-12 people is whether we will throw together teams at the last minute, and hope to be good enough, or on the other hand if we will dig deeper and come together early and often to truly prepare for competition. We are capable of great things, if we choose to be.

Za drugo izdanje našeg turnira, podijeliše nas, kao i za prvo, u tri tima. Nas jadne spopade Bad team, ali što ćeš – mora se povremeno pogledati i istini u oči. No ipak, u ovom surovom svijetu, bolje je biti i loš nego ružan.



Pripreme naše ekipe su bile u stilu ''k'o da nas je voda donijela'' – neki su se vrijedno uigravali prije turnira, neki su se ekipi priključili na turniru a neki tek u sredini turnira. Zapravo, sve je bilo toliko loše da je na kraju ispalo dobro. Sad kreću standardne fraze kak smo napredovali iz utakmice u utakmicu, kak su mladi igrači napredovali, kak ovo, kak ono...ali cijela priča ovog turnira svodi se na 45 minuta utakmice protiv Ugly ekipe našeg FDKZ-a. Nakon lošeg prvog dana gdje smo sve utakmice izgubili na poene do 11 ( tri s 11:2, jednu s 11:4), osvanulo je sunčano jutro puno nade da možemo. Moram priznati da sam u nedjelju ujutro prvo pogledao kad je utakmica za predzadnje mjesto ali u srcu je još tinjala nada da je nećemo igrati. Ekipi se, poput groma iz vedrog neba, minutu prije utakmice priključio i jedini i neponovljivi Ognjen thee Ogi Livada. Thee Marina je sa strane šetala bebu Vilima. Zona, koju smo povremeno i prilično neuspješno igrali prvog dana, konačno je proradila, dobila glavu i rep, pritisnula protivnika i dovela nas u priliku da dajemo golove – i bome smo ih se nadavali, čak 9 za konačnu 9:7 pobjedu zaključenu Ivinim dubokim uletom. Ogijeve trešnje nakon utakmice su mi baš pasale.





U preostale dvije utakmice smo skupo prodali svoju kožu u porazima protiv Freebeesa (2:8) i Catchupa (5:11) i osvojili fino 8. mjesto. Ali, nismo ostali bez nagrada na turniru – dobismo nagradu za najdulji ostanak na partiju i za najbolji par ( Bariša i Iva P.) u tequila-pištolj igri. Sve u svemu, jedan poučan i ugodan vikend u Strmcu koji je, nadam se i vjerujem, novim igračima pružio iskonski ugođaj frizbi turnira i uvjerio ih da je ovo najkul sport kojim se mogu baviti.

Pred vratima je drugo izdanje našeg ultimate frizbi turnira - Wild Wild West. 13-14. lipnja, FDK Zagreb će ponovo na terenu u Strmcu ugostiti kvalitetne momčadi iz 4 zemlje s kojima će se natjecati za naslov pobjednika na jednom od najzabavnijih turnira u regiji. Pozivamo sve zainteresirane da dođu na turnir i iskoriste priliku za upoznavanje sa letećim diskovima i igračima ultimate frizbija. Ulaz je besplatan.



Koncept turnira je takav da omogućuje igračima iz Hrvatske sudjelovanje uz minimalne troškove, čime ih se potiče na bavljenje sportom, edukaciju o tjelesnoj kulturi te se proširuje baza rekreativnih sportaša. Posjetiteljima omogućujemo prvi kontakt s ultimate frizbijem te nastojimo zainteresirati mlade za kvalitetno i aktivno provođenje slobodnog vremena. Međunarodnim karakterom turnira privlačimo pozornost zemalja regije na Hrvatsku kao modernu, sportski orijentiranu i atraktivnu turističku destinaciju. Pored navedenog, cilj kluba je povećati interes za ultimate frizbi u Zagrebu te stvoriti temelje za višegodišnju tradiciju održavanja turnira.

Kako doći do mjesta održavanja?

Lokacija: Športski centar Lazina – NK Sava Strmec

- voziti po E70/A3 u smjeru Samobor i izaći na izlazu Sveta Nedelja
- slijediti znak za Strmec i produžiti ravno
- na kružnom toku izaći na 3. izlazu (ulica Vladimira Nazora)
- kod kaplice skrenuti desno u ulicu Savska cesta
- produžiti ravno do krajnje destinacije – ŠC Lazina

Vatromet iz centra Mattseea, reklo bi se na prvi pogled tipičnog austrijskog provincijskog mjestašca, ali stisnutog između dva jezera no centrom priklonjenog obali jezera Mattsee, što mu daje neki jezerski, nadprovincijski štih, označio je početak naše ''nove godine''. Sjedili smo za stolom uz obnovljeni ritual žestice za novake (i za sve ostale, onako usput, kad je flaša već tu) i po završenom vatrometu izmijenismo čestitke, puse i zagrljaje.



Bila je to sredina jedne lijepe priče koje smo bili dio prošlog vikenda. A cijelu priču je prilično točno i razumno, kako to već Austrijanci rade, opisao PhiJe, naš gostujući igrač iz Graza, na livadi poslije zadnje utakmice: ''Bio sam malo skeptičan (tada nije mogao naći točnu riječ ali sam je ja sad našao) oko naše igre i naših mogućnosti nakon poraza u prvoj utakmici ali sve bolje igre u narednim utakmicama su me uvjerile da idemo u dobrom smjeru. Napredovali smo iz utakmice u utakmicu, posebno novi igrači.'' Otprilike tako je zborio Filip i svi se složismo. Trava je bila meka i podatna. Sunce nam je grijalo ozarena lica. Pivo je bilo odlično. Kombinacija spritea i piva još bolja – morate probati.



Subota je osvanula sumorno, baš prema prognozama. Tamni i prijeteći oblaci nadvili su se nad našu smrznutu frizbi zajednicu. S druge strane terena stajala je pomlađena ekipa Catchupa. Držali smo se odlično do 3:3 a onda dolazi do neobjašnjivog pomračenja naše igre (NPNI) koje nam ne dopušta da pobijedimo. Gubimo 3:8 i pokunjeno napuštamo teren. U drugoj tekmi, protiv Stolichnaye ista priča – držimo se do 4:4 a onda opet nastupa efekt NPNI i gubimo s 5:12. U trećoj utakmici pobjeđujemo efekt NPNI a time i protivnika – 10:2 protiv mlade ekipe No Go vođene s tri iskusna igrača koji su nas pokušavali nadmudriti i izbaciti iz ritma cjepidlačeći s pravilima ali dečki, mi vam u Hrvatskoj postojimo zato da kršimo pravila pa bolje odmah odustanite nego da se nervirate bezveze. Zatim nam na noge dolaze komadi iz Women National Teama Austria i razvaljujemo ih, na kaljuži od terena, bez puno sentimenata – 8:2. Zaključujemo, bit će nešto od njih ali ne ovaj put, bejbe. Prije zadnje subotnje utakmice vježbamo malo jogu. Zatim odigravamo najbolju tekmu turnira protiv Mosquitosa – pobjeđujemo s 9:8 nakon što smo 5 minuta prije kraja gubili 6:8. Neupućeni tvrde da vježbanje joge prije tekme nema baš nikakve veze s ovom bravuroznom pobjedom.



Nedjelju počinjemo tradicionalno – porazom. Ovaj put nije bilo efekta NPNI već nas je protivnik uspješno pleo i zapleo u svoju mrežu – 4:9 protiv SmartEZa. Ali Frki je u krugu nakon utakmice vrlo racionalno iznio tri objektivna razloga našeg poraza: iznenadilo nas je sunčano vrijeme a ne kiša kao u subotu (i kao u prognozama), iznenadila nas je nedjelja kao takva i, kao zadnje, mnogo je jednostavnije igrati ujutro kad se moraš rano dići i na brzinu doručkovati, nego u 12 sati kad sve to možeš napraviti na miru i još se fino rastegnuti i zagrijati. Tako je Frki, u potpunosti se slažemo s tobom!!! Ipak, u naredne dvije utakmice opet se budi hrvatska laka konjica i pobjeđujemo, prvo Schleudertraum sa 6:4, a potom u tekmi za 13. mjesto opet No Go sa 7:5. Ovaj put su se držali malo bolje, ušli su u shemu, skužili da mogu, ali uzalud vam trud svirači.



Kao zanimljivost turnira spominjem nastup albanske momčadi Tirana Disc Jockeys. Turnir je osvojio Frizmi. Unatoč tome što su došli sa samo 5 igrača (Tea, Hani, Damjan, Statik i Spooks) i što su subotnje veče zalili tradicionalno obilnom količinom alkohola, ovaj put i pojačanom pošto je Damjan slavio rođendan, u finalu su razvalili Inner Circle sa 13:3. Ubitačna slovenska zona te brzi i efikasni napadi potpuno su dotukli suparnika. Takvu dominaciju u finalu zadnji sam put vidio (i osjetio) prije gotovo godinu dana na turniru u Kopru kada smo (mi, Mali Dim/FDKZ) u finalu pobijedili 45 Giri s 11:3.



Konačno, skor od 5 pobjeda i 3 poraza stavio nas je na fino 13. mjesto od kojeg još više veseli atmosfera u ekipi i nastupi novih igrača. Prilično dobro smo igrali zonsku obranu a obranu men with last men još bolje. Pod odličnim vodstvom našeg Frkija koji je izvlačio iznenađenja sa svih strana (Balić iz džepa, pivo iz frižidera, Lijepom našom iz torbe...) i uz pomoć naši gostiju iz Graza, Martine i PhiJe, bila je to jedna prekrasna UF priča.
