I really don't want to worry anyone who thinks that I may have fallen off the earth since last tuesday, life just became, well...life last week. While I don't really feel like getting into all the details here, two wonderfully happy things happened last week. 1. My friend Gina announced that she is officially engaged and she requested that I shall be a bridesmaid in her wedding!! Woo Hoo! I was suffering from a bit of "always the BRIDE, never the Bridesmaid" syndrom.2. My friend Jenny had her baby on friday! After 48 hours of induction to no success, little Elizabeth was born last friday night at 8:20 pm. She's teeny-tiny at 5 1/2 lbs but she is 18 inches long. I went to visit them on saturday and man, that baby is cute! Her little head is the size of an orange and her little fingers are only about 1 inch long. She's got long toes, though. Long toe pride! :)Things in school are going well, just busy. My students have their first mid-term on thursday and I get to grade hand-written essays all weekend. Like I was explaining to Josh tonight, I really LOVE teaching and every professor that I know really loves teaching. No professor/teacher EVER likes grading. If you were ever taught to believe that any of your teachers liked grading...they were lying to you. The nice part is that we are going up to visit Mom this weekend (and to paint her house) so at least I don't have to worry about cooking or cleaning all weekend in amongst the tests!!I got a rather amusing email from my mother-in-law this weekend that essentially *asked* "permission" to reschedule Christmas so they could go on a cruise. I say it's amusing, because by the way it was worded, it really was asking for permission from we "children." It's totally fine with us if they go. It sounds like Lori will be busy-ish around then with work and Steve and I are headed to Mom's house for Christmas. She also wants my Christmas list (this is totally normal) so, what I should I ask for?Lori...this one's for you.I want:1 thesis in a canCan that be delivered by March? That would be swell.
Rest in peace, Dad. We miss you.RJS: May 8, 1937- September 20, 2004

I'm not sure if this is doctored or not, but it made me snort with
laughter when I saw it. It's a feat, especially after grading so
many awful papers.

Seriously, I can't read another badly written paper. After ~95 "1 page" summaries, I have been asking myself how some of these kids got into college. It's not an intro level course, either. Most of my students are juniors and seniors, and they can't write worth anything. I understand that writing isn't everyone's cup of tea. That's fine. But, if you are turning in a paper for a grade...do you not read it before you turn it in? Obviously not.I WILL teach these kids to write before the end of semester. (Or at least help them make some progress.)Keep your fingers crossed for me!
A sleepless night at the old homefront.
While I must confess that I did get a bit more sleep than Steve (0 hours), 4 hours seems to be not quite enough to function. I was up sneezing, coughingand nose blowing all night (stupid allergies.)
Around 6:15, Steve left for the rec and I have pretty much been awake since. Except for 15 minutes twice. First I fell asleep about 6:30...to be woken up my his alarm at 6:45. Then I fell asleep about 7:15, to be woken up to his call at 7:30 that he locked his keys in the car at the rec.
Don't get me wrong, I do not believe that Steve was to blame for any of the above events (except maybe the key thing, but he was tired, so it's no big deal). But damn...what a way to start a week.
What's this? I can get an internet connection in the basement of Hamilton, but I can't get one in Ross or in the Library. SO...NOT....FAIR!
Ahhhhh! The new semester started and it feels as though I've been running since day one. Here's what's on my plate:
1. 2- 2.5 books to read per week
2. 2 chapters of thesis due by Christmas
3. prepare for and teach 4 recitation sections per week
4. 1 footnote check and 1 journal review due
5. office hours
6. breathing
7, 8, 9, 10. RESEARCH!
Last night, after I had been reading for 7 hours, Steve came in the
living room and said, "We are going to a movie...put your book
down." And I actually had to consider if I wanted to do more
homework or go have fun! What?! What has come of me?
So, long story short, I gave in and we went to see "Revenge of the
Sith" again. It was a nice distraction.
Ok, time to head downstairs and make sure my powerpoint works in my classroom. Fun, fun!
The good news is, I don't have to cook dinner. We are off to a BBQ!
Ah, a whole day of meetings. Sitting in one spot for 7 hours is just about enough for me. On the whole, the day wasn't actually so bad. Dr. Bailey was in a good mood today! (woohoo!) There were also a good number of "old" TAs there, which meant that a large percentage of us already knew each other and could have some fun during the day.
First there were expectations, then policies and procedures, then grading, and finally teaching. At some level, everyone in the room had some experience teaching, so much of the day was spent preaching to the choir, but it got my head thinking about teaching strategies again and what I should expect from my students.
I think I'll work on my syllabus tonight because I *finally* found out what I'm teaching for the fall. US Society and Culture in the 1800s. All day, people kept saying..."do you know what you are in for??" Well, yes, in fact I do. I took the class some 4 years ago. It's going to be a lot of work from a grading perspective (2 4-blue book essay tests and 8 2-3 page journal article reviews) but I'm really comfortable with the time period, the material, and the professor. So life should be good...just busy.
Mom's coming down tomorrow to spend the weekend. I think we're heading to Stomping Grounds for brunch, then off to the pottery studio to paint some works. Most likely tomorrow night we will be heading up to Minneapolis to visit Darnell, Matt and Elliott (an the new baby, too, I guess :-) ) There was a little scare with the baby last week, but we found out today that everything is back in order and the baby is doing great! What a relief! Anywho...we decided to go give her some company and, oh yeah, play with Elliott.
Steve's in Indy this weekend. Versus PTQ. I'm hoping things turn out well. *fingers crossed*
Well, after a long day, I think I'm going to go read my "Glamour" and watch some "Sex and the City" How girly can you get??? :-)
Food for thought...

It made me laugh hysterically!
As if a birthday couldn't get better....At Best Buy today:Steve and I got new cell phones! Yeah! Our old ones didn't "work" so well any more. ;-)Shaun of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead DVD 2 pack for $20And the coolest....The Black Oil Storyline from the X-Flies all in one DVD!If you were big into the X-Files like I was, you will know how cool this is...right? :-)I'm pleased.
For the good news or the frustrating news?Good News! I got another job! Working in the Archives for the second summer is already getting kind of dull and I was just saying the other day that I would love to find something else to do. Then something fell in my lap! I get to do research for one of the foremost Iowa historians!!! I'm not quite sure what this all entails yet, but it HAS to be better than sleeving pictures all day. No, I'm not totally leaving the library, but at least this will give me something challenging to do.The frustrating news?I cleaned up a hairball and kitty pee off the floor this morning. I am actually a little worried about Cleveland. He has peed on the the floor 5 times in the last month. He is having all of his needs met, so I am curious why he is doing this. I know about the hairballs and that's fine...but the pee is an issue. Diabetes? Bad little box habits? I don't know and I'm not quite sure what to do about it.
