New Digs

I thought it only appropriate to make a post tonight from my new sanctuary of knowledge. That's right...the office is "complete." I have a nice, new, big desk. I also a completely full bookshelf that is so full, a bookshelf purchase will be in my near future (is there a more beautiful sight?). I've got a lamp. I've got a chair that I borrowed from the dining room. I've got beautiful curtains hanging from their rods. I've got a cat in the window. What more could an academic ask for?1- filing system2- bookshelves (2) (brown-black from IKEA most likely)3- an unstuck 2nd window (we accidentally painted it shut...ooops!)4- a rug for the floor (we accidentally got some paint on the carpet)5- frames for my WWII posters that will go on the walls in here...then hang themEven with all of that...it's so nice to be in here and to not have to work on the dining room table anymore.I'll post pictures soon, but for now...I'm basking the the office-ness.

I may have over-reacted slightly

But then again, that would never happen. *blink, blink*I made through the day from hell and how did I reward myself? Gilmore Girls, Simpsons and King of the Hill with gbuugg, Chinese food for supper and then a healthy late-night nap. Wait...what? (To be fair, my fingers actually typed snack there instead of nap...that's what I get for trying to be funny.)So now, at just past 9 o'clock, I sit down to finish my paper for tomorrow. I got some good revisions done this morning, but it occurs to me that I may not have actually written a solid thesis statement anywhere in the document. Bad graduate student....Extra good karma points go out to gbuugg, vkerensky and my loving husband for saving my sanity time and time again. What did I ever do without you guys!?It sounds as though there are festivities planned for Friday night, then I'm off to Mom's house for Saturday and Sunday (big sister is bringing the kiddos down) and then back home on Monday to do some homework. I'm sure there will be an update before then, but for now...those are the things getting me through this week.Now...off to finish the paper.

How many hours in a day...

Can one graduate student work before she falls over? Apparently the brain starts to get very tired around 4:30.With just two classes this semester and a 4 class teaching load I figured that work would be reasonably light this semester. Not light as in nothing to do light, but as in not going to kill me light. To all those out there in radio-listening land...I have dramatically underestimated my workload. At this point, I am crossing my fingers and hoping that most of the work that is killing me right now will even out and things will get better farther into the semester. To finish before Wednesday at 1:10 pm:5 page paper for 100 points in my rural studies class30 questions about 3 journal articles for my writing class2 sections of explain why we have to take any quizzes let alone pop quizzes and map quizzes to 50 lovely undergraduates2 sections of answering questions about why the evil professor and TA are bashing on student's said religion of choice when trying to make an arguement about thinking "historically"2- 3 hour seminars50 quizzes to gradeAnd that's after the host of other things I have been doing since 7:30 this morning. But what am I doing right now...typing in LJ. Why? Because it makes me feel better. The cathartic self-examination brings sweet release.

The one who taught John Tucker to love

After such an exciting post as yesterday's water post, I figure that a post about something happy and uplifting might be just want the doctor ordered. Now, I have something to admit to you all...I'm generally a fan of the high-school romance movie. There...I said it. Something about a first step here and admitting something should probably be in order but we shall move along to the topic at hand. This afternoon gbuugg and I made our way to the local "dollar"1 theatre to see a screening of "John Tucker Must Die." Corny, I know, but bare with me. Three girls make it their goal to make John Tucker, the biggest "player" in their school miserable. Not to ruin the complex plot for those who wish to see it, but this movie has the makings of a hilariously funny jaunt back to high school. With a little perspective on the years that weren't so great, laughing at a movie like John Tucker is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon...when I should be doing homework. That's right...classes started up again. Working on my 20th year of education, teaching Western Civ 2 and reading and writing up the wazoo I have only pondered once..."And tell me again why I signed up for more of this???" Left to its own devices my brain likes to idle on things like VH1 and E! Entertainment channel, but it really isn't happy doing either of those things. With the exception of the movie, what else I have I done this weekend since the water poured over my floor like a typhoon?? Done homework and slept. Wow...if being 25 makes you this much of a party animal, I can't wait until my 26th year.... ;-)Anyway...off to watch the Primetime Emmy's and be catty about all the uproariously funny fashions. And to, oh yeah...drool over the fantastic shoes.__________1 Our "dollar" theatre is no longer actually one dollar, it is in fact $1.50. Wednesday night that used to be "50 Cent" night is now the only actual "dollar" night. I know...why am I complaining about only paying $1.50 to see a movie in a theatre.2 For those who are unfamiliar with my background...I have never taken as much as taught a Western Civ class. Staying two weeks (or maybe one) ahead of my students will be key here.

Enter Fury with a Dash of Sarcasm

Saturday morning. Roll out of bed around 9:30.Make some Zuchinni Brownies with Peanut Butter Frosting.Read a little while the brownies are baking.Put laundry in. Transfer to dryer and put new load in the washer.Take shower.Back downstairs...notice laundry room floor covered with water.Shit!Make a quick trip to Target for a mop.Mop up the water and head to the basement to check for water.Find water on the floor from the sump-pump and find dripping water from the insulation below the floor of the laundry room.Double shit! For those of you who were so jealous of my house...it's days like today that I would really love to have a landlord.

Microfilms

Ya'll know I love my research, but seriously...2 hours in the microfilms room is ALL I can take before I feel like my eyes are going to roll out of my head. Ah well...1/2 month of papers left to finish the 1948 primary.I'm heading home to go for a ride. Then I'm off to the OAH in Lincoln tomorrow. I present friday morning (my first conference presentation.) Is it bad that I'm only slightly nervous and I haven't looked at my paper or powerpoint in 2 weeks?? I'm guessing things will be ok...after all Jenny and Deb will be there. Wish me luck!

The dangerous internet

The internet is a dangerous thing. Shopping on the internet is the MOST dangerous thing. I could have easily spent approximately $100 on various things in the last 20 minutes. They deliver to my door. They have awesome selection and great sales. These things are all good. The problem...it's way too easy to spend money on the credit card on-line.Want list:1) cycling shorts- will wear spandex for comfort2) cycling speedometer/odometer ( preferably heart rate monitor and calorie counter, too)3) suspension fork for my bicycle4) ipod road tripThese could all come from ebay...this could be too easy. What every happened to needing patience? That apparently died with the internet.

A thought about religion and politics

As many of you know, I am currently tossing around ideas for the dissertation and I have a pretty strong interest in the influence of religion in politics. While it may not be the 19th century, the following piece (yanked from the Anderson Cooper 360 Blog on CNN.COM) is one of the most insightful articles I've read in a long time.

Out for a ride

I made it farther! Went out for another ride this morning...about 45 blocks this time. I believe that translates to roughly a mile? Anybody help a girl out?...I really need to get one of those distance/speed/elevation monitors for my bicycle.
