Writing

If I can be just a little bit snotty for a minute...I just finished proofing the seminar paper of a graduate student that needs to retake 8th grade English. I understand that I may not be the most precise writer all the time, but at least a coherent arguement generally makes its way onto my screen. I sincerely wonder how this guy was admitted to graduate school. His entire paper for our HISTORY seminar, was either written in the future tense or the present perfect. If I had a nickel for every useless "had" or "has" he had in the paper...I would be freaking rich. Well...at least enough to buy a latte. Context is important, flow is important, and a coherent thesis is important. Otherwise you have, exactly as this paper demonstrated, twenty-seven pages of nothing.

Thesis

Ah, a subject that will be occurring frequently as far as I can tell.So, tell me...Is 19 pages enough to send out the first chapter for comments?In other working stuff....checking those damned article reviews are coming along. At 14 pages each, it's slow going, but they are pretty good so far.We went up to see Elliott last weekend. Talk about good stress relief from thesis. He is one cute kid. Pictures to come later.

T-break

I just noticed how long its been since I updated my journal! The thesis and teaching has taken over my life!
The past few weeks I have been totally encompassed in writing and teaching. Sixteen pages into my thesis, with a flood of information to deal with, I am experiencing an embarrassment of riches. I've been working on a chapter about "The Homemaker's Half-hour" during World War II (meaning rationing, textiles and furniture conservation, etc.) It's interesting, I really like it, however I am beginning to realize that I could write a *whole* thesis just on this topic.Ahhh...such problems to have, right?
I taught the whole-classlectures for class this week while the Prof. is out in New York doing research.My lectures on "The New Woman:1890-1914" went off without a hitch! I really enjoyed lecturing and had a fantastic time up there in front of class. I even had a student send me an email after class and tell me how much he enjoyed my lectures! It's such a comforting thought to know that I am a good teacher, I do like teaching college-level classes, and I have picked the right profession. However, I still don't know if I have a TAship for next semester. I've been told not to worry, so keep your fingers crossed for me!
Last weekend was Elliott's 2nd Birthday...this weekend we are headed up to Minneapolis....next week we are off to Illinois for Turkey day. In amongst all the fun, I've got essays to grade (about 85), 6 pages of the chapter to write, and two books to read. It actually seems like I've got tons of free time! Ahh...the ways graduate school skews your perceptions of life.

Sunday Afternoons in the Fall

Today has definately been the ultimate lazy sunday afternoon.I got this week's grading done.I went out for lunch with the hubby.Went to the grocery store.Took a nap.Made a pumpkin pie (It is currently in the oven and making the apartment smell heavenly)Threw together some beef stew to simmer on the stove.Enjoyed a good book.Will make biscuits later.I'm going to take some stew and biscuits over to my friends who just had a new baby. Sharing the fall love around!

Worst

Worst...day...ever...No one likes students who don't come to class prepared and then proceed to sit in the back of the classroom and talk when others are trying to participate.No one likes a class of 18 students, only 4 of which actually read the assignment. No one likes having to give a pop quiz instead of having an enjoyable class discussion.No one.

It's a day

Quickie update on today...

1. This morning I had 2 fillings done at the dentist's
office. After not attending to my regular check-ups for an
*undisclosed* amount of time, one might say that two fillings isn't so
bad. But you don't understand. I have *nearly*
uncontrollable panic attacks in the dentist's chair. I had a
really terrible dentist when I was a kid, and ever since then I have a
slightly irrational fear of dental work. So, needless to say, two
fillings is a really big deal for me. All in all, things went as
best as could be expected. Lots of things in my mouth, novacaine
that mostly worked*, and a half-numb face when I was done. They
injected the novacaine shots at 10 am....I got feeling back in my face
at 3 pm. That was awesome. That's it....awesome. But
alas, it's over and I don't have to go back until next spring. My
one thought about the dentist is...how do people withought dental
insurance pay for dental appointments? They are frickin'
expensive!

2. My afternoon....starting at 12:30 pm was great fun!
(Still no feeling in the mouth, though.) Gina and I went to pick
out bride's maid's dresses! We went in, heart set on getting 2
piece job-ies. After trying on about a thousand of them....we
decided that they all suck. The cut of the separates dresses can
not possibly be flattering on anyone. The other problematic
venture of this outing was that the other bride's maid is 5'2" and
busty as can be. For those who are wondering...I'm about as
opposite of that as one could possibly be. However, after trying
on another thousand one-piece dresses...we found the perfect one!
I have no idea how we missed it on the rack the first time, but I sure
am glad Gina spotted it in the magazine! The color will be indigo...btw.

It's now 10:20 pm and I have *finally* finished grading my students
midterms (about 80 essay exams) and I have completed lesson plans for
class tomorrow....I think I may actually get to go home and
sleep. To make that sleep even more heavenly....it's about 38
degrees out tonight and I am totally sleeping with the windows cracked
open. Man, I LOVE FALL!

* I have a nerve in the left side of my mouth that is always incredibly sensitive to fillings or really any kind of abuse. It didn't really hurt, per say, it was more of a nerve-zing sensation.
