It's a glorious 76 degrees outside. After 3 nights of not sleeping very well because of the heat, it's about time. Thank you, thunderstorm.Thank You!And now for some WoW!

WoW

I just earned a few more nerd points tonight. I created my first World Of Warcraft character. Amused...not sure if I am amused enough, yet.

Hot Weather and Very Few Cool Clothes

Well, summer has sprung here in Iowa again. As I picked up last sunday's paper from my usual reading spot before starting on today's "newsie" I noticed something...the high temp for last sunday was 69. The high temp for today will be a projected 91. God Bless Iowa. The state that brought you a tornado and a blizzard in one week last fall has entered summer again. I realize that Memorial Day weekend is considered by many to be the official start of summer, but here in Iowa...is that really true? About a month ago, it was as hot as it is today. Everyone cheered and said, "Yeah! Summer!" Today, I even find my self saying "Damn...it's hot." So are we ever really happy, I don't think so, but after yesterday's search for the elusive summer-wear, I hope this summer isn't too hot.Steve and I headed to the great DSM land (specifically Old Navy) to attempt to purchase some summer-wear for me. What I specfically needed was shorts and a nice outfit or two for wedding related activities this summer. What didn't I buy? Shorts and a nice outfit or two. Somewhere along the way (when I wasn't looking) apparently shorts became painfully uncool. gbuugg informs me that all the "What Not to Wear" shows are telling everyone NOT to wear shorts because they look bad on everyone. Well, what should we wear instead? They suggest skirts. To be perfectly honest with you, I am about as comfortable in a skirt when it's 95 degrees as a cat is in water. For those of us who aren't rail thin, skirts can lead to an uncomfortable summer phenomenon called heat rash. And for those of you who know what I'm talking about...you understand. Without going any farther into that, I much prefer shorts for the summer. Regular shorts. About mid-thigh to just below my waist. Ye olde shorts. I am convinced that retails to not carry such an item this year. Sure there are the "Mom shorts" at Younkers and Eddie Bauer, but are those comfortable...no. So here I am, with no new shorts, wearing the same pair of denim shorts I've had for 5 years now. I have some Bermuda shorts, too...but when it's hot, even that's too much fabric. The nice outfits are less of an issue for me. I am positive I will find one somewhere. I just have to find a skirt that's cut for someone over 5'6''. I thought I had this cute little dress at Maurices last night. Black with little white polka dots. Halter top with actual body to it. They sadly only had a large left. While I got it on and it fit decently well, I think an XL would be a little less...trashy. Especially for a bridal shower. Ah well.So you ask...what did you buy then? 2 tank tops, a tee-shirt, a khaki pencil skirt and a pair of running shorts. All good stuff, but when your summer wardrobe has an average age of 3 years...it's not quite enough.

Just FYI

I got into a pair of size 14 jeans tonight for the first time in forever! Boo-yah!But, then again...I suppose that's what the "surgery diet" does for you. Anyway...it still felt nice.In other news, I'm back on the crutches. I went to Cyclone Sports Medicine for my first visit this morning, and the good doctor took one look at me and said...you should still be on crutches...what are you doing? It's going to be a long haul for recovery. I just have to keep reminding myself that it really will be worth it in the long run. Because of the crutches however, I've decided not to try to take Cleveland to the vet by myself tomorrow for a check-up. It's just not worth hurting myself to try to get him there. That kitty...he's been the best companion during recovery. Some of these days would have been SO much worse without him. I LOVE MY KITTY!!!

The Knee

As I lie here in the living room, on the hide-a-bed, waiting for the time I can take my next pain pill, I think...I should write a livejournal entry. That would be nice. My, oh my, it has been quite the long day.Starting bright and early, gbuugg showed up at 7 am to get us over to her shower by 9:30. You say, Kristy...didn't you just have surgery 2 days ago, why are you going to a bridal shower. I say... Yes, in fact I did just have surgery 2 days ago...what do you mean I should take it easy? Stubborn as always and determined to be the best maid of honor on the planet, I soldiered on with 2 pain pills in me to the shower. I learned one things this morning, I probably shouldn't do 3 things together... 1) take 2 pain pills 2) get up really early 3) drink milk. Between the lack of sleep, lactose and narcotics I pretty much felt like I was going to pass out at the shower this morning. But, in true fashion, I grinned through the pain and nausea at the shower and promptly fell asleep for 1.5 hours as soon as I got home. Pampered Chef showers are amusing enough for all that and besides...I got a new chef's knife out of the deal! After a bit of much needed sleep, gbuugg came back over to the house and we enjoyed some mullet-tastic Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves." Bob also showed up with my tape of Mike's stint on Jeopardy! (for those of you that don't know...my friend _mjf_ is this season's Tournament of Champions winner!) Steve and I had some dinner from Hickory Park, we out again (unadvisedly so) and bought Season 1 of "Grey's Anatomy" at Best Buy (yes, Steve wheeled me around the store in the wheelchair) and came home to collapse. Now, lying here, kitty at one side, I really think I've done enough for one day. This will probably come to haunt me tomorrow. In brighter news, I finally got in touch with Sarah tonight after a month long drought. Today is verzoeking 's birthday! And I get to go to sleep soon. My knee feels a bit stronger today, so feeling better is on the way! I'm actually really tired of not being able to get anything for myself. Apparently having servants isn't for me.On second thought...wouldn't a maid be nice...

Kitty-Pants and Surgery

Once again, a quick update to let you know what's up.Last friday, Steve and I got our first pet! Cleveland is a 6 year old Siamese that we got from the local humane society. He is possibly the most affectionate, sweetest cat I have ever met . I now completely understand how people get so attached to their pets so quickly. So, what's the other news? I'm having arthroscopic knee surgery a week from Thursday. Apparently, as the doc exaplained it, I have torn meniscus and some badly bruised catilage behind my knee cap. Of course, it was entirely up to me whether or not I wanted to fix it, but when he said "I can realieve 2/3 of your knee pain with surgery" I said YES! After 10 years of pain, my knee may finally be getting better. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Update and Happiness

Wow...it's been ages since I updated.Since then I've...1. Finished the thesis2. Planned and pulled off a very successful Phi Alpha Theta banquet3. Got in a car accident (I'm ok, just a little whiplash and a pretty banged up car. A nice old man decided to drive his pickup truck into the side of my Taurus)4. Taught my last sections of this school year5. Gave a final exam6. Successfully defended my thesis! It's true. There is one more Master's Degree in History in the world. I technically don't graduate until August due to deadlines and I technically still have a few changes to make, but I got an unconditional pass and all the signatures, so I have a Master's Degree! I'm pumped!Just 84, 200-point essay exams to grade and my summer o' travel and fun officially starts.Oh yeah...the house is awesome, too! :-)

Response...finally

After returning from 1st lunch with some folks from the department and 2nd lunch with the husband (I totally spaced off that he wanted to have lunch today. And no, I didn't eat two lunches, I sat and talked to the husband at lunch 2) I opened the mailbox to find my final response letter about all the grad applications I sent in. It turns out that Penn didn't want me either. So, 4 applications and $600 later, I get four rejection letters. Now before you start getting all "Didn't you just buy a house?" and "Didn't you already commit to stay at ISU before you got this?,"this letter is neither shocking nor disturbing to me. It's disappointing. Not that I really cared to move at this point, it just would have been nice to say that I got into at lease ONE school besides where I am. Ah well, I have not so great GRE scores and no publications (yet!)but within our department, I get quality one-on-one attention and all the support I could hope for. Plus, with all the faculty that are leaving or going on sabbatical, stand-alone teaching experiences in the next few years will skyrocket. What does this all mean? I will most likely get more experience here than I would anywhere else, just not the fancy-schmancy name on my degree to go with it. Do I really care? Not even a little bit. This weekend, however, re-affirmed that staying here for 3-5 more years will be an entirely acceptable situation. Steve was gone to Atlanta since last Wednesday, and in his absence all of MY friends stepped in. As gbuugg put it, "Oh my God, Kristy can't be alone! We need to find her stuff to do!" I had a fantastic weekend! By Sunday, though...I was dead tired. I went out with the department folks friday night (and closed the bar a VERY drunk Kristy at 2 am.) Then, got up at 8:30 am to go to the auction (which was a comeplete waste of time because it was mostly crap.)What did we do instead? gbuugg and I took a day-trip to the Williamsburg Outlet mall for a little theraputic shopping. I got some stuff for the house and some new shoes, among other things. Then, when we got back, had some pizza and watched "Capote." I should clarify by saying that I watched *most* of "Capote." It was an entirely fine movie...it was just the hangover and lack of sleep telling me that it was time for some snoozy.Sunday, it was a bridal show with gbuugg and some shopping for wedding undergarments. By the time we got done, she said, "you can come over for supper, or you can go home if you want. We all kind of scheduled your weekend for you, so if you want some quiet time, that's fine." Needless to say I went home, took a nap and made some salmon for supper. While the scheduled weekend was tiring, it was a really great feeling that I now have enough friends of my own that, when Steve's out of town...I'm not going to be sitting at home all weekend. That's a feeling that, up until this school year, I haven't had since all the old college crowd moved away. Can I call Ames home now? Absolutely! Am I happy about it? Yah, shure you betcha!

Done!

First draft of the whole thesis is turned in for comments! I know it's not perfect. I know some of it might not make sense to anyone but me, but at this point...I've read it so many times that I can't tell where the holes are anymore. The upside of all of this is that, since I obviously won't get revisions back until next week...I get to goof-off this weekend! I am pumped! On tap (literally)Out with the History Dept folks tonight (Celebratory beer, anyone?)Tomorrow: Antiques auction with Gina and some thrift shop scrounging.Sunday...I don't know...sleeping in and playing video games? And my Stevie's coming home Sunday! Woo Hoo!Then...back to the grindstone. But for now! Party! Or nap ;-)

Omega-3s

So, I always hear that Omega-3's are good for brain power. So, tonight...with first draft of the whole thesis due tomorrow, I made Annie's Organic White Cheddar Mac and Cheese with Albacore White Tuna (one of the flavor pouches.) If you are a fan of tuna and mac and cheese (as I am) definately try it. It's way better than Kraft white cheddar mac and cheese. But with the tuna...magnificent!Side note...4 pages left. Will finish tonight. Will have fun this weekend. Antiques auction saturday?? Anyone?
