I’m A New Man 13. Well Alright 14. Struggle With his fourth album, Rodney Smith continues the expansion of his aural horizons. Where Awfully Deep was just that - and featured an intense bout of soul searching bordering on the macabre - Slime & Reason takes in a broader spectrum of emotions, the rapper by turns funny, touching, insightful and thoughtful. Mind you, it doesn’t sound like a new record, and that’s not a criticism - merely an observation that the Roots Manuva sound, as it is now, lives and breathes in an analogue state that brings freshness and a little vulnerability. It’s Me Oh Lord, for instance, is a deep song that takes place over an older synthesizer sound, Manuva in confessional mode as he looks to the skies, at times crying out while elsewhere murmuring almost inaudibly. On the other side of the fence sits Buff Nuff, a Toddla T production and a thinly veiled ode to the female form. Funny and engaging, it’s an account of Manuva locking on to a girl with his radar and refusing to let go. Also making a contribution to production is Metronomy, whose plangent brass accompaniment to Let The Spirit is unexpectedly touching, and conjures the image of Manuva arriving in the bandstand when everyone’s gone home. It’s possibly his most touching moment to date, and catchy with it - the very antithesis of Witness (One Hope), but every bit as effective. The enjoyment doesn’t stop there, as the overall textures are heavily influenced by a passion of Smith’s, well before he got in to hip hop - the sound of Channel One and Studio One. As a result of this focus the bass lines are big, often monstrously deep - and sound great turned up loud on a stereo. The rapper’s manner, too, is more in keeping with their aesthetic, taking the record more towards the Caribbean but not forgetting the vignettes of Englishness we’ve come to know and love from this source. This being Roots Manuva there’s a lyrical gem in pretty much each song - and this being Roots Manuva, a lot of them are intensely personal observations. Most tellingly in It’s Me Oh Lord, he states that “you know my trade mark, my trade start - first and foremost we’re dealing with the heart”. And that’s where the principle appeal of this record lies - within its varied musical styles, a personal drama continues to play out - one the listener can easily relate to. Link

Black Behind Not long ago, an unsolicited DVD arrived at The Residents’ studio. Since the location of the group’s private inner sanctum is a closely-guarded secret, the appearance of the disc was definitely regarded as a little strange. Other than the occasional piece of junk mail, nothing ever arrived at The Residents’ intimate work space without an invitation. But the envelope containing the disc bore a familiar return address, so, after first ignoring it for a few weeks, The Residents finally opened the package and put the disc, crudely-labelled “Postcards From Patmos,” into a DVD player. Fascinated, the group watched as a most curious document unfolded before their eyes. It seems that a former colleague, known to everyone as “Bunny”, had become convinced that his brother had disappeared on the Greek island of Patmos. After weeks of vainly attempting to get assistance in locating his lost sibling, the man detailed his plight in a series of videos. Technically inept, The Residents’ former friend was reaching out to them for assistance. It seems the man had heard of YouTube and other internet video websites, but he had no idea how to upload his pathetically primitive cry for help. Uncertain as to whether they were watching evidence of a real problem, ignored by friends and authorities, or the gradual breakdown of a once-stable personality, The Residents were nevertheless moved by their friend’s dilemma and immediately decided to offer their help. Using their colleague’s return address and last-known phone number as starting points, they attempted to reach him but got no response. Determined, they contacted other friends and former co-workers of the man, but no one had seen him for months. It was as if he had disappeared. The group then thought the best solution was to upload their friend’s video exactly as it was given to them, but after watching the DVD several times, they came to the conclusion that it was simply too crude - even for YouTube. The lighting, sound quality and camera work were so substandard that their friend’s cry for help would never be seen. While posting the videos might be a labour of love, the group’s energy and affection was obviously misplaced. But what could they do? After brief consideration, the answer became obvious and the original “Postcards From Patmos” DVD became the inspiration for The Residents’ latest project. Changing the name to The Bunny Boy in honour of their missing friend, the group recorded an album of pop songs based on the contents of the original DVD. Then, continuing to feel pathos and inspiration for their colleague’s situation, they re-created the original “Patmos” videos. Link

The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds

"Little Fluffy Clouds" is centered around clips from an interview with Rickie Lee Jones in which she recalls picturesque images of her childhood. Critics and fans sometimes attribute the odd nasal tonality of Rickie Lee Jones' voice to drug use, though Jones later claimed that it was the result of a heavy cold. The sample comes from "A Conversation with Rickie Lee Jones", an interview featured on a promotional 2-CD edition of the Flying Cowboys album. Interviewer: "What were the skies like when you were young?" Jones: "They went on forever – They - When I w- We lived in Arizona, and the skies always had little fluffy clouds in 'em, and, uh... they were long... and clear and... there were lots of stars at night. And, uh, when it would rain, it would all turn - it- They were beautiful, the most beautiful skies as a matter of fact. Um, the sunsets were purple and red and yellow and on fire, and the clouds would catch the colors everywhere. That's uh, neat cause I used to look at them all the time, when I was little. You don't see that. You might still see them in the desert." Jones was upset at the unauthorized use of her voice and pursued the issue in the legal system. Big Life chose to settle out of court for an undisclosed sum of money for use of her voice on The Orb's recording. The song also uses a harmonica sample from Ennio Morricone's The Man With The Harmonica (from the film Once Upon a Time in the West) and parts of Electric Counterpoint, a piece for multitracked guitars composed by Steve Reich and recorded by Pat Metheny. Reich, unlike Jones, was "genuinely flattered" by The Orb's use of his work and instructed his record company not to sue. Alex Paterson has also mentioned that fans would "die" if they discovered where the drums on "Little Fluffy Clouds" originated from. 320 Kbps. Link

I pulled this one out on a whim a few days ago and was amazed at how great it sounds. Daniel Miller's production influence shouldn't be underestimated here, because there's a fair bit of the bubblegum harmonies that were so heavily featured on The Silicon Teens album. That said, Gahan is a proper singer and the fizzing pop melodies of Vince Clark are among his best work, being the equal of The Yazoo albums. Vinyl rip at 320 Kbps. Link

GOLDEN EARRING MOONTAN (1973) 320 KBPS Some people know Golden Earring only for their best known song,"Radar Love", which I've always found slightly odd because they have plenty of other songs that are as good or better, on this and other albums. This is guitar driven rock, not heavy rock, I'd call it melodic rock with a nod towards the progressive rock end of the spectrum as many of the songs have more complex structures than is usual. I've always found them very enjoyable to listen to. On this album for instance, you have "Candy's Going Bad", "Are you Receiving Me?" and "Vanilla Queen" that are certainly up to "Radar Love" standard if not better. 1. Candy's Going Bad 2. By all means a phenomenal pop album that claimed the number one slot on NME Album of the Year. Nightclubbing saw Grace Jones working once again with Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, and the remainder of the Compass Point team, providing ideal backdrops for Jones yet again, casting a brisk but not bristly sheen over buoyant structures. Nightclubbing also continues Jones' tradition of picking excellent songs to reinterpret. This time out, the Police's "Demolition Man," Bill Withers' "Use Me," and Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing" receive radical reinterpretations. The lead-off single for the album was Sting's "Demolition Man", originally written for Grace Jones but also included on The Police's album Ghost in the Machine, later that same year.
