The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has developed PWM technology to improve the efficiency of LED systems

Thanks to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Electronic and Information Engineering, researchers recently developed high-performance LED driver , LED lights can be brighter and more energy-efficient than ever .



This award-winning high-efficiency technology can be applied in many fields, such as LED billboards , and another 15% energy saving

The new drive use the innovative multi-stage PWM technique to supply power for the LED lights , compare with the the PWM and linear drives LED products currently use , this kind of technology significantly improves the quality of light and energy efficiency. This approach is not limited to the LED driver , and can provide more benefits and options than the PWM or constant current mode.

Using the traditional PWM method , what the current LED accept is pulsed, rather than DC . This drive current fast switch with the speed the human eye can not detect. The Pulse current supply to the LED so that the optical output is more easily controlled.

The research team was established by the Doctor Lai Yuk Ming , Professor Loo Ka Hong Dr. and Michael Tse, they have changed the PWM mode . Pulsed operation is redesigned in the way that is maximize the light output while minimizing thermal energy . Resulting in higher luminous efficacy (lm / W). Dr. Loo Ka Hong thought their technique could be saving 15%.

In large-scale applications, the energy-saving effect is more significant. One Times Square building in New York billboard is a good case . 12 million lights were used in the huge display of the Building, the power is 250KW. If the billboards work for 16 hours a day , then the monthly electricity bill is $ 18,000 . Energy savings is 12% ,which means that $ 2,160 .

Moreover, compared with traditional methods , which require low heat dissipation , the required heat sink is smaller. This means that the LED system can be made smaller . As with excellent dimming capability , the new PWM driver allows the manufacturer can produce a full dimming LED, thereby leading to as low as 0 watts dimming performance . These excellent quality can create the brighter and more intelligent and more durable LED lighting solutions.

Worldwatch Institute said that from the perspective of environmental protection , the world are turning to LED era. If all of the traditional lamps are replaced with energy-saving products , lighting energy will be reduced by 40%.
