Choose a robust look with this 10mm band, constructed in lightweight and tough-as-nails titanium. Titanium is a great material. It cannot be soldered, so all the connections are cold-- riveting is the main one that I used. These rings were created layer by layer starting with the center and working my way out. Design elements were soldered into place as I went-- always to the silver. I used various styles of rivets. The smallest ones are 18k gold pins, but I also used tube rivets, and in the case of the garnet ring, the sterling lining on the shank is flared out on both sides to also act as a rivet.

I cut and drilled the sterling and titanium sheet on a cnc milling machine.

The ring on the left was the last one I did in this series of rings. It is 10 layers and I was just starting to play with not strictly just alternating the layers-- so you can see that the middle consists of two pieces of titanium. I like the contrast between the two metals, one dark and one light, and the faceted garnet.

The ring on the right consists of 13 layers and is relieved on the sides for a comfortable fit. The stone on that one is a rectangular iolite cabochon.

Sixteen years ago today, Ken and I woke up, packed a few bags, and eloped to Summerville, Georgia.

Between the two of us we had $200, a pair of cheap gold rings from Service Merchandise, and a rented car. I wore a 1960s pink satin cocktail dress I bought in a vintage store for $12. Ken wore the nervous smile of a new bridegroom. With a gas station map and only a vague idea of how to get where we were going, we finally ended up at Paradise Garden, where folk artist Howard Finster awaited to marry us.

After a sweet, odd, and rather rambling ceremony, during which bees buzzed around our heads and dogs ran around our feet, Rev. Finster pronounced us married. He then reached up over our heads and pulled a ripe fig from the tree Ken and I were standing under; splitting it in two, he handed us each half of the ripe fruit and told us to enjoy it together as man and wife. As we bit into the sweet fruit the moment felt magical, primeval -- like we were the first married couple ever and the world was innocent and new.

And all these years and pounds and children later, no matter how harried and crazed the days have been, whenever I look at him all those feelings come rushing back and the world falls away and it feels the same to me -- still.

I have lots of jewelry from my grandmother's stash. She seemed to love things gold, cheap but flashy, and/or generally not my style. The pin clasp is off-center, meant to be worn horizontally.

The more interesting and underlying themes, however, particularly the hero's obvious Oedipal dilemmas, are lost beneath this window dressing, as if everyone involved was afraid to commit to the story's intrinsic value. What a beauty! This sparkling diamond insert has .47 ctw of round, NATURAL diamonds lining the top and bottom. The diamonds are I-1 in clarity and HI in color. The setting is solid 14k white gold. The natural space between the Vs in the two rings is 1/4 inch. That means that your MOUNTING (not necessarily your solitaire) must be smaller than that to fit naturally. However, this insert style wrap can be pushed apart or pushed together slightly if need be. The solitaires in the pictures are all 1 ct. quilting pattern often overlooked in today’s society isthe Underground Railroad quilt code. Used during the timeof abolition and the Civil War, this visual code sewn into thepattern of quilts readied slaves for their upcoming escape andprovided them directions when they were on their way to free-dom. While there were ten different quilts used to guide slavesto safety in free territory, only one was to be employed at a
time. In order to memorize the quilt code, sampler quiltswould be constructed with one pattern next to the other.These patterns were intended to be used as mnemonic de-vices. When the time came, the first of the ten quilts was laidout by fellow slaves either in the window or on a clothesline,until all of the escaping slaves had gotten the message. Thenthe next one would be laid out and so on, until the slaves pass-ing through the plantations had arrived to safety.Instead of taking the time to piece the front and back ofthe quilts together with delicate and precise stitching, theslaves would use simple pieces of twine to join it together.Each tie was placed exactly two inches apart, and was com-prised of a certain number of square knots. This created a gridpattern on the back of the quilt, which is now believed to be amapping indicator between safe houses on the journey (usu-ally, there was a safe house every five to twenty-five miles).This code was kept secret for years, for secrecy and honorare two things most valued in African tradition. Many times,ancestors of some of these escaped slaves recall being told thestory of the quilt code, and then warned against disclosing theinformation. Ozella McDaniel Williams was an elderly African-American woman who sold her quilts in a marketplace downin South Carolina. Mrs. Williams was the one who finallybroke the silence about the Underground Railroad quilt code.She restates the code for Tobin and Dobard’s book, Hidden inPlain View (the bolded words are the quilt patterns in thiscode): “There are five square knots on the quilt every twoinches apart. They escaped on the fifth knot on the tenth pat-tern and went to Ontario, Canada. The monkey wrench turnsthe wagon wheel toward Canada on a bear’s paw trail to thecrossroads. Once they got to the crossroads, they dug a logcabin on the ground. Shoofly told them to dress up in cottonand satin bow ties and go to the cathedral church, get marriedand exchange double wedding rings. Flying geese stay on thedrunkard’s path and follow the stars” (Tobin and Dobard22–23).The Monkey Wrench pattern would have been the first quilt to be laid out from which the slaves could glean informa-tion. This quilt conveyed the message that slaves were sup-posed to begin preparing for their journey to freedom by col-lecting not only physical but also mental tools. As for thephysical tools, slaves would need supplies to set up shelter, acompass, and weapons for defending themselves. By instruct-ing the slaves to collect mental tools, the quilt pattern encour-aged them to be cunning, alert, and knowledgeable about the journey ahead. It also motivated them to reshape their self-image, to realize that they were soon to be free.The second pattern in the code was the Wagon Wheel.This pattern informed the slaves that they needed to begin preparing for the journey by packing food and other provi-sions as one would pack a covered wagon. This advised them to keep in mind what would be valuable on the journey, what type of materials would be needed for survival. The wagonwheel was an obvious symbol for the moving slave party since wagons were a popular way of hiding fugitive slaves on their way to the next destination.Both the Monkey Wrench and Wagon Wheel patterns are thought to be interconnected in the Underground Railroad code. When the code in Hidden in Plain View states that “the monkey wrench turns the wagon wheel,” art historians seem to believe that it implies that the monkey wrench may have been a person who had authority over the wagon wheel, which symbolized the moving slave party. The monkey wrench is thought to be a person, organization, or group that knew the plantation’s layout incredibly well and was aware of the daily going-ons. This way, he would be able to help without being suspected of anything.The Bear’s Paw pattern is the third part of the code. This pattern instructed the slaves to follow a path that literally had numerous bear paw prints. By following such a trail, the slaves would inevitably be led to both food and water. In areas throughout the country where bears were considered to be scarce, the pattern was given other names. In Pennsylvania it was often called the “Hand of Friendship,” and in New York, “Duck’s-Foot-in-the-Mud.” The Bear’s Paw pattern is remark-ably similar to the African Hausa embroidered map of a vil-lage. After many years of debate, Fort Worth researchers identified this site in 1957 as the location of the city's first Masonic lodge. For more than twenty years, lodge members met in a two-story hall at this location. The group organized in 1854 and received its charter the following year as Fort Worth Masonic Lodge No. 148, A.F. & A.M. Members initially rented space for meetings and began construction on their own lodge hall in 1857. The new building offered space for lodge functions on the second floor, which was a single room, and the Masonic group operated a school on the ground level. The first floor space was divided into two rooms and was available for public meetings and church services. Donated to the lodge by Middleton T. Johnson, the site of the lodge once lay outside the city's populated area. The hall sat well beyond the old fort grounds, and even at about four blocks east of the public square it was built on unplatted land outside the city's business district. Although plain in appearance, the red-brick building signified progress and civilization. Its two stories faced west with a bell tower over the main entrance. In 1871, Lawrence Steel, a member, sold the lodge an English-made bell (c. 1782) that became known as the Masonic bell. It rang to announce stagecoach arrivals, fires and the start of the school day. By 1878, the Masons had outgrown their lodge hall at this site, and they moved to a new building at Second and Main. Lodge No. 148 has continued to be a strong presence in the community, spawning an additional fifteen lodges in Fort Worth. (2006)

Under most circumstances, silicone-based products provide for a longer service life than many other materials currently available. G661 is widely used to seal and protect outdoor and underground electrical connectors by blocking moisture, dirt, insects, and air to prevent arcing and corrosion. G661 is used professionally by manufacturers in several major industries, but it's versatility also makes it ideal for many applications around the home. It is effective in preventing corrosion and rust on items such as battery terminals, trailer electrical connectors and hitch parts, as well as any metal exposed to rain or moisture or chemicals including threaded connections, hinges and pins, fasteners, slides, springs, cables, locks, etc. Unlike common petroleum greases, G661 does not get stiff in cold weather nor melt when hot, even in very harsh applications such as brake caliper pins and guides. And because it is safe on most plastics and rubber, it is used to lubricate and protect many common items such as spark plug boots, pool filter gaskets, hose gaskets, pressure washer connections, rubber boots and bushings on automobile drivetrains and suspensions, vacuum and enclosure seals, plastic gears, and more. For lubrication of metal to metal and select plastic parts, consider the Versilube line of greases for bearings, gears and other mechanisms under sliding and rolling friction conditions. Do not use in or around highly oxidative chemicals such as liquid oxygen or chlorine.

I left the edge of the setting deliberately with the hammer-marks to complement the pitted steel. I was going to get a little silicon polishing wheel in there, but decided against it.

This silicone O-ring is red in color, round in shape, has a durometer of 7OA, and is designed for use in a wide variety of sealing applications.
Silicone is acceptable for temperature applications between -65 degrees F (-54 degrees C) to 450 degrees F (232 degrees C). Silicone is vulnerable to mechanical wear and tear, water and steam over 250 degrees F (121 degrees C), aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene), chlorinated hydrocarbons (trichloroethylene), acids and bases, and hydrocarbon fuels.
O-rings commonly provide a pressure and fluid seal between cylindrically shaped, overlapping mating surfaces and are commonly seen in engines, faucets, flanges, valves, and various cylinders. They are circular in shape, with a round cross section and a hole in the center, similar to a doughnut. O-rings are available in a number of sizes, and can be ordered based on required nominal inside diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), and cross-sectional (CS) diameter.
This silicone O-ring has a shore durometer of 70A. Shore durometer is the hardness of a material, and its resistance to permanent indentation. A higher durometer value indicates greater resistance to indentation on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 indicating no indentation.
This silicone O-ring meets standards defined by Aerospace Standard AS568A, which is the Aerospace Size Standard for O-rings.

At our weekly meeting at work we acknowledged my 20th anniversary with the company. I was handed a large envelope.
I pulled out a congratulatory letter from the CEO.
Then a brochure for the "pick your anniversary gift" company (I'd already ordered a new camera from their site).
Then this thing fell out. I have to confess I was momentarily nonplussed. WTF?
Then someone explained it was for sizing rings (which are one of the things the rewards company offers). Well, duh.
I find the design curiously pleasing.

This ring is made from opalite teardrops and hammered silver spirals. Opalite is a man made opalized glass resin that is fused with metal to create an opalescent effect with a lovely blue glow. The wire is non-tarnish and silver plated. Fits size 5, but has an open design so its flexible. Packaged in a hard plastic capsule so it doesn't get crushed in the mail.

This is a letter, postmarked July 2, 1898, wriiten by Harry S. Huff, a recruit in basic training at Chickamauga Park, in Lytle, GA to his mother, Anna Huff, in Wilkes Barre, PA. In the letter he tells his mother that he will be sent to Puerto Rico and for her to not tell anyone until they have left. History records that the Ninth Regiment is never sent into battle. However, they suffered much from typhoid during the five months they were in camp. Half of the 1300 troops came down with the disease, and 29 died.

Huff confesses to gambling to what seems to be a religious mother, and the money he sends her is not the money he gets from gambling. He tell her not to worry, but then describes the death of soldiers in the camp. He seems very lonesome for his mother.
He ends up being transferred to a reserve ambulance corp.

THE NINTH REGIMENT, ITS DEPARTURE, ITS EXPERIENCES AT
CAMP AND ITS RETURN - WAR EVENTS
IN WILKES-BARRE.

During the year 1898 the Ninth Regiment, N.G.P., was called to serve in the war with Spain, but, although the boys were in camp for over five months, during which time they suffered very much from disease, they were not ordered into active service. Typhoid fever, however, was just as deadly as Spanish bullets.

The Ninth Regiment left Wilkes-Barre April 27 in response to the call of President McKinley for volunteers and the orders of Governor Hastings for the National Guard of the State to mobilize at Mt. Gretna. The largest crowd that ever assembled in Wilkes-Barre gathered to see the regiment off. The Pittston, Parsons and Plymouth companies came to Wilkes-Barre and met the home companies at the Ninth Regiment armory and about 8 o’clock in the evening the march to the station was begun. The whole populace had become excited at the outbreak of the war and as nothing had yet occurred to show the relative strength of the two nations, it was expected that the regiment would see active service, and the uncertainty as to its fate, of course, increased the public interest on an occasion like this. It is estimated that there were one hundred and thirty thousand people in Wilkes-Barre to see the regiment off. All along the line of march to the station was a jam of people and Public Square was
one mass of humanity, so dense that the regiment had great difficulty in making its way through. Quite a number of women and children were injured in the crush. Judge Stanley Woodward delivered a farewell address from the steps of the First National Bank building and presented the regiment with a flag.

The regiment was of the following strength when it left: Officers, 44; Co. A, 61; Co. B, 59; Co. C, 60; Co. D, 66; Co. E, 53; Co. F, 54; Co. H, 53; Co. I, 50; total 456 men.

About the first heard from the boys at Mt. Gretna was a revolt in some of the companies on account of the lack of food, owing to the illness of the commissionary sergeant. This, however, was soon remedied.

On May 1 great crowds gathered in front of the Record office to read the news that came
piecemeal regarding the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Manila by Admiral Dewey’s ships.At Mt. Gretna the members of the Ninth Regiment were given an opportunity to enlist in the volunteer service of the United States for two years and all but fifty-three answered “yes” when their names were called. Every member of Co. F of Wilkes-Barre (Captain McCleery) and of Co. H of Pittston (Captain Flannery) volunteered and only one in Captain Pierce’s Co., I of Plymouth, declined.

While the boys were at Mt. Gretna a recruiting office was opened in Wilkes-Barre in charge of Lieutenant Camp and nearly three hundred additional men were enlisted and sent to camp to fill up the companies to the war footing. These recruits left Wilkes-Barre May 8. In addition to the fifty-three, who declined to enlist, about half a dozen were rejected from the service during the medical examination on account of physical reasons.

On May 10 a United States recruiting office was opened in the Chahoon block on West
Market street, in charge of Lieutenant Dentler, for the purpose of enlisting for the regular army. A couple of hundred readily joined the service and were sent South, many of whom saw service in Cuba, Porto Rico and Manila.

While the Ninth Regiment lay at Mt. Gretna, the boys were assiduously drilled and were
kept at hard work. Several times there were rumors that orders would be received in a few days for the regiment to prepare for service in Cuba and the boys, as well as their relatives at home, were much excited.

May 17 the regiment left Mt. Gretna for Camp George H. Thomas, Chickamauga Park,
Georgia, and on the way South the boys received a regular ovation. Crowds were at nearly every station and employ[e]s from factories threw scores of pounds of tobacco into the cars. Women also came with coffee and other refreshments

This was my first real experiment with lighting as a new photographer. I'm really happy with the way everything turned out. I know I don't have fancy lighting or anything but I make do with what I got. Haha. As you can see I shot this in my garage which is a little messy haha.
