Sixteen years ago today, Ken and I woke up, packed a few bags, and eloped to Summerville, Georgia.

Between the two of us we had $200, a pair of cheap gold rings from Service Merchandise, and a rented car. I wore a 1960s pink satin cocktail dress I bought in a vintage store for $12. Ken wore the nervous smile of a new bridegroom. With a gas station map and only a vague idea of how to get where we were going, we finally ended up at Paradise Garden, where folk artist Howard Finster awaited to marry us.

After a sweet, odd, and rather rambling ceremony, during which bees buzzed around our heads and dogs ran around our feet, Rev. Finster pronounced us married. He then reached up over our heads and pulled a ripe fig from the tree Ken and I were standing under; splitting it in two, he handed us each half of the ripe fruit and told us to enjoy it together as man and wife. As we bit into the sweet fruit the moment felt magical, primeval -- like we were the first married couple ever and the world was innocent and new.

And all these years and pounds and children later, no matter how harried and crazed the days have been, whenever I look at him all those feelings come rushing back and the world falls away and it feels the same to me -- still.

when one hasn't been to a favourite haunt for a LONG time it is only VERY pleasing AND fitting to find lots of luscious loot non?!

***nOte*** everything bar the Harrods bag was bargained down by yours truly....which is quite a feat for me as I am a guilty seeker of making bargains a tad cheaper. Today however i was super confident! hee hee
