Morning in Vancouver

Morning in Vancouver

Taken just outside Granville Island in Vancouver with a ASA 200 Likon Film (Dollar Store Film) and a Vivitar UltraWide and Slim Plastic Camera (Dollar Store in Montreal). I got film and camera late last year from my brother back in Montreal.

It's really amazing how grainy this film is. I guess with 1$ film and 2$ processing at Costco, all you get is grain.

The camera is surprisingly wide and light. Vignetting renders the pictures quite interesting. All my best pictures so far with this camera and film are in really bright areas, with a blue sky. I will have to keep this in mind...

In downtown Vancouver.

I kind of wanted to take some photos inside too, but I didn't think they'd like me having a camera out in the store, so I chickened out and didn't try it.

Interesting place, with lots and lots of hardware out on the floor to play with if you want. Nice stuff too. Too bad it's too expensive for me to afford anything beyond my ipod classic.

(Four Fingered) Sixto Rodriguez

(Four Fingered) Sixto Rodriguez

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez

In 1967 he released the single "I'll Slip Away" through the small label ‘Impact’. He didn’t produce anything for another three years until he was signed to Sussex Records; an offshoot of the Buddah label. Rodriguez recorded two albums with Sussex—Cold Fact in 1970, and Coming from Reality in 1971. But after mixed reviews and low album sales he was later dropped from the label, which later folded in 1975.

After the failing to make an impact in America, he gave up his career as a musician and worked in construction (possibly where he lost his finger). However, although he was relatively unknown in his home country by the mid 70s, his albums were starting to gain airplay in countries like South Africa, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), New Zealand and Australia.

After imported copies of his Sussex albums ran dry, an Australian record label, Blue Goose Music, bought the Australian rights to his back catalogue in the mid 70s. The label released his two studio albums plus a compilation album At His Best (featuring unreleased recordings from 1976 "Can't Get Away", "I'll Slip Away" (a re-recording of his first single), and "Street Boy". Unbeknownst to Rodriguez, it went platinum in South Africa, where he achieved cult status.

With a new buzz around Rodriguez, in 1979 he toured Australia with the Mark Gillespie Band as support. Two shows from the tour were later released on the Australian only album Alive—the title being a play on the rumours caused by his public obscurity that Rodriguez had died years ago.

In 1991 both his albums were released on CD in South Africa for the first time. His fame in South Africa was completely unknown to him, until 1998 when his eldest daughter found a website dedicated to him on the internet. In 1998 he played his first South African Tour.

June 28, 1977: Much seen, but one of the very best - Tim Webb's HMAS Melbourne [II] at the Silver Jubilee review off Portsmouth.

1874. This photo was on the first roll of warship photos that U.K. ships photographer Tim Webb ever took, and it continues to give him - and many others - pleasure today.

Much picked up from Flickr and reproduced on various warship websites, it's provence may have become a little confused. But Tim had purchased his first advanced camera specifically for the Silver Jubilee international fleet review in 1977, and says this photo of the RAN flagship was one of the best shots that he had caught on that June day. We can but agree. It is outstanding.

The second radome showing in the photo behind Melbourne's Skyhawk aircraft is on the French warship Duquesne, which was next on G Line behind HMAS Melbourne [II] that day.

Just recently Tim's 1977 photo of HMAS Melbourne [II] has again been reproduced for the Schmap Melbourne 11th Edition, a well-known US-based online tourism guide that features the HMAS Castlemaine Museum Ship in its presentations of local Melbourne attractions, and which generally acquires permissions on RAN ship photos to keep it fresh and changing.

Although already seen in our mutual Nautical Pictures of Interest group postings on Flickr, I also made a special request to Tim - whom I chat with now and then - for the photos inclusion here. I very much wanted it to appear in the Unofficial RAN Centenary photostream too.

Photo: Tim Webb, U.K., reproduced with kind permission for the Unofficial RAN Centenary 1911-2011 Photostream.

OM 2009-2010 Edition (with Review Cards and Student Website Printed Access Card)

This all started with you, in your own classrooms and hallways. Through conversations, focus groups, surveys, and interviews, we asked you to tell us how you learn. When and where you study, and… why? Some of your comments surprised us, while others didn't: "(the book is) too long" and "too expensive." Many of you said you didn't even buy books--new OR used. And then we turned to your professors for input on the solutions that you liked best: briefer chapters and flash cards. Faculty from schools across the nation joined us online and in face-to-face focus groups to enhance our student offerings. The result? To accommodate the busy and diverse lifestyles of today's learners, a less than 385-page paperback that includes a suite of learning aids, like flash cards, cases, data sets, games, and quizzes. Introducing OM, an innovative approach to teaching and learning Operations Management that is best designed to reach you: today's students. OM says it all using only two letters--and not only is it how most students abbreviate Operations Management in a text message, this is also the way it is referred to in most course catalogues. Most importantly, OM represents the new solution that you and your professors built together.

Buying a camera is never just about the camera, but about everything else that goes with it!
With my Canon T1i I had much success with the non-Canon battery grip. It was an awesome purchase. I bought the same neck strap for this camera but also bought a gel guitar cushion for a neck strap- we'll see how that goes. Also pays to have plenty of back up batteries for doing weddings and long events. The wrist strap is also an awesome accessory!

So excited to start using my 7D now... just need to set aside time. I have a model shoot coming up- two actually. great excuse to start with that!

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM UD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras

Designed to deliver ultra-high quality images along with lightning fast operation, the new Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom lens brings a favorite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series of lenses. It features two Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration, incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity, plus an IS system that increases usability by approximately four stops. The EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM features a function that prevents erroneous operation when the lens is mounted on a tripod or monopod. Gleaming white, with an optional removable tripod collar, dust and water resistant construction, and a newly developed Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum, its phenomenal performance and flexibility is assured. For portraiture or to bring what's far away up close, this addition to the L-series is guaranteed to perform.

50 years difference

50 years difference

Because I was bored and nothing worth to capture was around, I started to compare two lenses. Since a while I allready had the feeling, that the pictures, which I did with the Canon standard lens looked a bit poor in contrast. So I grabbed my oldest standard lens, an almost 50 years old yashinon 55mm f/1.8 from a Yashica J-5, bought in 1962, to compare it with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. The sun was shining in an angle of 60° onto the garage wall, so I mounted my EOS 450D onto a tripod and positioned it 90° to the wall. In mode AV I made exposures of the bricks each in f/8.0, f/11 and f/16 with the canon lens and also the Yashinon, mounted on a proper adapter to fit the Canon bayonet mount. From this exposures (4272 x 2848) I made crops in the size 400 x 300 px from the upper left corner (position 0,0), just to be outside of the better range of the lens for my comparison. The shots where taken in JPG-mode and not treatet with any software!
In the result above you can see clearly, that the almost 50 year old Yashinon with fixed focus shows much better results as the Canon standard zoom lens. In the peripheral area the Yashinon is much sharper and shows better contrast as the Canon lens. Also the quality stays equal throughout the aperture range, while the Canon lens lacks contrast with closer aperture. I already heared, that zoom lenses have less quality as fixed focus lenses, but I didn't expect such a notable discrepancy, particularly with almost 50 years of development inbetween. Therefore I decided to make some more tests with my other lenses, I'm quite curious of the results, comparing old and new zoom lenses.

Anatomy of a Speedlight Setup.

Anatomy of a Speedlight Setup.

This is a speedlight of the most basic variety. It has a relatively small 4 stop range of light (down to 1/16th) versus the latest from Canon or Nikon, and is sizably bulkier too, but at $85 brand new, I don't think there's a better speedlight out there for people to begin with. It's resale value is great too, there's really almost no cost to the light itself. It also has the most important feature: Manual.
If you're thinking of getting into strobist lighting, regardless of whether you're a billionaire or a college student, I think it is absolutely essential to shoot both your camera and your lights in manual. There's no better way to understand what your camera is doing, and what your lights are doing than shooting in manual mode. I know there are much more sophisticated ways of setting up, and much can be done through the camera's and lights' brains, but this doesn't make you any better as a photographer. It may take a bit to get used to, but once you do, you'll have a much better understand of what you need to do to get the photos you want, and will have much better control over your lights.

I've included notes on the picture, but this is the basic anatomy of a setup.
1. Flash unit: On this particular unit, there are no screens and minimal buttons. A dial for setting the aperture and power, or a second dial on the front to manually set the power.
2. Flash Cord: In order to trigger this flash, you'll want to have a transmitter of some sort. I use Pocketwizards, which cost about twice as much as the flash does, but you can get along just fine with RF-602's, which are about $50 for a set of 3 (and also work really well, I may publish a test for those soon...maybe after I take them to Thailand?). I bought this cord for about $15 on flashzebra.com
3. Trigger: My beloved pocketwizard. At $170, it's not any kind of a deal, until you start pushing the limits of what triggers can do, and it's the only one still standing. Triggers range from about $20-200
4. Hot Shoe Mount: This is needed to hold the flash to the umbrella adapter (5)...it's basically just a hotshoe like the one that's probably on your camera, but removable and has a stud hole in the bottom. ($15-20)
5. Umbrella adapter: Holds umbrellas (shocker, I know), but also articulates so you can change the angle of the flash, and is a connector from the flash to the light stand. Mine's a manfrotto and was about $30. I'd avoid going any cheaper if you actually want to use any sort of modifier. The nice thing about the manfrotto one is that it comes with all the necessary (for me) studs too.
6. Lightstand: Huge range of sizes and costs, but the one I have here is an Alien Bees 10' lightstand and I believe it was about $35.

A new, one light setup like this could range from:
"inexpensive": $85 flash + $15 hotshoe + $25 umbrella adapter + $30 trigger and cord + $15 B-sale stand : $170 (the price of a pocketwizard),

or "expensive" : $500 flash (newest Nikon or Canon) + $30 hotshoe + $60 umbrella adapter + $200 trigger and cord + $100 stand = ouch.

Generally, the price reflects quality, but most of us can create great images without the top-of-the-line gear. I have a lot to say on the subject, but I'd like to organize it and get it all in one place (Note to self: get your damn website together!!?!), but this is all for a caption of a flickr photo haha.

Thanks for looking, sorry this took so long Steph!

Many of the photos that are posted have been taken on this very camera. I inherited this camera from my dad, who purchased it brand new in 1976, for about $600.00 (In 2009 that would be about $2200).

I have acquired many lenses over the past couple of months that I have been lucky enough to have this camera, and will continue to acquire lenses that work with the camera, provided that I actually do have a use for them.

I look forward to the many years that this camera will provide me with, as being of such an old vintage, I can pretty much guarantee that it'll outlast my digital by many many years! When they say, "They don't make them like this anymore!" They were talking about this Camera!
It is one of the most technologically significant cameras for its time. It didn't set any design records, but it outsold Nikon, Pentax, Leica, and Konika/Minolta!

SĂ,ren Kierkegaard's Journals and Papers, Volume 1: A-E

" 'I can be understood only after my death,' Kierkegaard noted prophetically: the fulfillment of this expectation for the English-speaking world a century and a quarter later is signified by the English translation in authoritative editions of all his works by the indefatigable Howard and Edna Hong.... The importance of [the Papirer] was emphasized by Kierkegaard himself.... The essentially religious interpretation he gave to his mission in life and his personal relationships is now documented clearly and exhaustively.... Obviously, these editions are essential for academic and large general collections." -- Library Journal
"From this point on, anyone interested in tracking down a Kierkegaardian theme will have to consult the Hong presentation as well as the books of Kierkegaard." -- Annual Review of Philosophy
"The translations are entirely excellent. One envies the Hongs their capacity in language, the breadth of their reading in Kierkegaard and his sources, and the dedication they brought to this Herculean task. The assistance of Gregor Malantschuk has contributed materially to the notes which serve as trenchant summaries of Kierkegaard's thought on the topics.... This is indeed a monumental work." -- Review of Metaphysics
"... [an] astonishing labor of editing and translating... " -- International Studies in Philosophy
"Howard and Edna Hong have brought to the task solid scholarship, linguistic competence, an imaginative and useful arrangement of the material, and a scrupulous self-effacement before the work. No one could ask for more." -- Citation of the Judges at the National Book Awards
"We must be grateful to the Hongs for their enormous labor.... Kierkegaard's Journals and Papers are worth having for angry days, or 'inward' days; especially when they have been translated in as lively and sensitive a manner as are the texts in this first volume." -- Nation
The incidental writings of SA?ren Kierkegaard, published in the twenty-volume Danish edition of the Papirer, provide direct access to the thought of the many-faceted nineteenth-century philosopher who exerted so profound an influence on Protestant theology and modern existentialism. This important material, which Danish scholars regard as the "key to the scriptures" of Kierkegaard's other work, spans his entire productive life, the last entry of the Papirer being dated only a few days before his death. These writings have been previously inaccessible in English except for a few fragmentary selections; the most significant writings are now being made available in this definitive seven-volume edition under the editorship of two expert scholars and translators.
Kierkegaard's scattered writings fall into three main subject groupings: journal entries of varied content, notes and early versions of his published material, and personal reactions to his reading and study. In length and degree of polish they range from brief and cryptic notes to extensive lecture material, finished travel sketches, and extended philosophical speculation. The translators provide annotations, copious notes, and a collation of entries with the Danish Papirer.
The editors group the selections in Volumes I through IV by theme, with all entries on a given subject under the same heading. Within subject headings, entries are arranged chronologically, making it feasible to trace the evolution of Kierkegaard's thought on a specific topic. Volumes V and VI are devoted to autobiographical material. Volume VII contains an extensive index with topical crossreferences.

Day 12: Best day so far [with an asterisk]

Day 12: Best day so far [with an asterisk]

So the picture? That's John's feet. Pure, unadulterated color on that shot. Looks fantastic, doesn't it? The rest of him is just as, if not even more, toasted than his feet.

Anyway, before I go into why today was so awesome, let me explain the asterisk first. No, it's not John's sunburn, although that's related to both the asterisk and the awesome.

So in yesterday's post I wrote about how it was the worst day so far of the trip -- death march bike ride, sea urchin in the foot, and something I neglected to mention -- our hostel owner's son (the owner of the original place we were supposed to stay before he overbooked and bumped us up to his mom's place) came by and told us that he and his mom had had a miscommunication, and she'd overbooked, and we needed to go back to his hostel for our last night. Given that they'd given us a discount for our last night on the original rate we'd paid, I wasn't complaining too much, but it still is a hassle to pack up and move for one night.

Anyway, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise. This morning, as we were packing up, I realized my camera was nowhere to be found. The reason this is a blessing is because if we hadn't had to pack up, I likely wouldn't have realized this until tomorrow morning, right before we left town (because I couldn't take it on today's activity) and I probably would have made us miss our ferry as we were looking for it.

So anyway, as you can probably guess, massive panic (and tears) ensued. I tried to retrace my steps to where I'd last had it. I knew for sure that I'd had it at the cemetery that we stopped at on our bike ride. I couldn't remember after that, but I thought I might have had it when we went on our second ride before returning the rental bikes. But I COULDN'T REMEMBER. Yesterday was kind of a hot, painful, icky day (with the exception of the lovely swim I had shortly before impaling my foot on a sea urchin.)

We spent an hour looking for it. We went back up to the cemetery (got a ride from the hostel owner this time though.) I even went to two different police stations. Nothing. No one had seen it. I finally resigned myself to my fate -- it was gone, and it was my own damn fault. Now that we'd wasted the entire morning looking for it (well, and moving hostels, which took longer than I thought it would when the hostel owner realized I knew something about computers and wanted tech help... sigh) it was almost noon and we still weren't in a kayak, which was our original plan for today -- to rent a double kayak and a couple of snorkels and go snorkeling.

So on our way to the kayak rental place, we decided to try one last place -- the ice cream shop we'd stopped at at the end of our death ride yesterday, which is right on the main wharf in town. I didn't look here before because I was POSITIVE I had my camera after this... yaay for heat-addled brain creating false memories! I also figured that since the only seating is outside on benches and it's on a main drag, that if I'd left it there, it would be gone anyway.

So we walk into the ice cream place and I go up to the girl behind the counter and tell her in English that I think I might have left a camera there yesterday. She looked at John, and it was like a light went on in her face. She started talking really fast in Croatian, and rushed around the counter to the back corner of the shop. When I caught "kamara" in her monologue, I literally ran after her, and saw it sitting on the shelf in the back. I'm not embarrassed to say that I totally burst into tears, and then she picked it up, and when she turned around, I hugged her. I tried to give her money as a thank-you, but she wouldn't take it, darn it!!! I really wish she would have... I sooooooo owe her, and whoever turned it into her!!! When I took a breath from thanking her, she explained in broken English that the reason she knew I was there for my camera was that she recognized John, because she'd looked through the pictures to see if she could get an idea of who it belonged to... WOW. I am SO SO SO SO SO SO SO LUCKY.

So I'm not counting losing my camera as part of today's "best day so far". Neither is having to switch hostels. As far as I'm concerned, both of those events *happened* yesterday, but their resolutions were today. That's fine with me.

Anyway, so now that I had my camera, we went off to the kayak rental place to rent ourselves a kayak. Thankfully they have a storage area for people's purses and other valuables that they didn't want to take with them on kayaks, so I was able to leave my camera there (because it's a 15-minute walk from town to our new hostel and we were already running behind and I didn't want to walk all the way back.) I do have to admit that I was a bit nervous handing over my camera, though... Understandably so!

By the time we got on the water, it was almost noon. I SWEAR we both slathered ourselves with 30SPF sunblock. SLATHERED, I tell you. Oh, and that stuff was suppo

Akan Datang: WB550 - Review by Segadget

Akan Datang: WB550 - Review by Segadget

"PENTAX Corporation | PENTAX K10D | Manual | Spot | 1/20sec | F/2.8 | 0.00 EV | 36.0mm | ISO-200 | Off Compulsory | 2009:04:19 11:51:14

It s not yet released, but I ve got the WB550 anyway. After taking pre-shots for 2 days, I think I will like this much. Most of all, it has 24mm wide angle like the LX3, and it also has 240mm tele photo zoom not 60mm which the LX3 had. I might use the LX more, if it supported better tele photo lens. I had the FX180 also, so I thought the FX180 fit me more. (The price was double.)

I like the HD video recording. It can zoom and record voice while recording. When are you Olympus supporting the zoom for video recording.. I will handle them in the review, but I like the detailed setting and accuracy when taking shots. I like the intuitive UI much, and the best thing is the price, I think. It has only 60% of Panasonic cameras which are compared to Samsung cameras. Looking at new products, they make great pictures and have wonderful performance, so I expect the Samsung to be a global brand.

I don t like this is an upgraded model of the WB500 which was released at the end of the last year, but I like the Samsung understand and reflecting customers needs. As a matter of fact, 80% of digital cameras are made by Japanese brands, so I m not the only one who hopes the Samsung is doing a good job in this market. Anyway, I think I need a kind of studio. Recently, it s getting more to review, but I have neither a strobe nor studio, so sometimes I needed better quality. I don t want to blame it for my instruments. It s because I don t have good skills to take pictures, but it s worse due to poor environments."

SAMSUNG DIGITAL IMAGING WB550 Review by NoteForum

It is still a bit cold, but cherry blossom is proving that spring has come. People are dressing lightly and look livelier than in freezing winter.(The good season has come for taking pictures. In winter, people used to stay inside due to cold weather and gloomy environment, but now it s time to go outside. I used to put my digital camera home in winter season, but I m planning to go out more now.)

Samsung Digital Imaging s WB550 is the most recent one of the high-class WB series. Compared to the former WB550, many things are upgraded. And it s good to carry and take high quality pictures in such a good weather like these days.(Some important features are upgraded such as Smart Auto, HDMI, image resolution, etc.)

It will be definitely different from popularized products. From this review, we ll take a look at its various functions and quality of photos and videos.

Then Megan went off to Preview Night and I went off to pick up my badge. I was in an epic line, but it was all worth it when I got my badge and Big Bang Theory bag.

Snoopers: Webster's Timeline History, 1886 - 2007

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Snoopers," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Snoopers in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Snoopers when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Snoopers, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

SB-24 'Snooper' Liberator 868th Bomb Squadron 43rd Bomb Group 13th Air Force

SB-24 Consolidated Liberator s/n 42-40832. Not much history on this particular aircraft available.

Radar equipped Liberator, with an extra crew member to serve as radar operator. In the Pacific, they are used for low-level attacks and shipping strikes at night, and for pathfinder operations. the 13th AF activated the 868th ‘Snooper Squadron’ flying SB-24 on January 1, 1944.

What makes this squadron unique is that they operated “SB-24s” (an unofficial designation) that were equipped with blind-flying equipment consisting of the SCR-717 10-centimeter Sea Search Radar, the SCR-729 Aircraft Radar Beacon (aka “Rebecca IIA”) and a number of other devices including an absolute altimeter, a radar scope and a bomb-release mechanism. The mission was for low level, anti-shipping strikes under the cover of darkness. They had this capability because the radar-sighting devices permitted operation of the bomb-release mechanism irrespective of visual sighting of the target.
