(Four Fingered) Sixto Rodriguez

(Four Fingered) Sixto Rodriguez

Sixto Diaz Rodriguez

In 1967 he released the single "I'll Slip Away" through the small label ‘Impact’. He didn’t produce anything for another three years until he was signed to Sussex Records; an offshoot of the Buddah label. Rodriguez recorded two albums with Sussex—Cold Fact in 1970, and Coming from Reality in 1971. But after mixed reviews and low album sales he was later dropped from the label, which later folded in 1975.

After the failing to make an impact in America, he gave up his career as a musician and worked in construction (possibly where he lost his finger). However, although he was relatively unknown in his home country by the mid 70s, his albums were starting to gain airplay in countries like South Africa, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), New Zealand and Australia.

After imported copies of his Sussex albums ran dry, an Australian record label, Blue Goose Music, bought the Australian rights to his back catalogue in the mid 70s. The label released his two studio albums plus a compilation album At His Best (featuring unreleased recordings from 1976 "Can't Get Away", "I'll Slip Away" (a re-recording of his first single), and "Street Boy". Unbeknownst to Rodriguez, it went platinum in South Africa, where he achieved cult status.

With a new buzz around Rodriguez, in 1979 he toured Australia with the Mark Gillespie Band as support. Two shows from the tour were later released on the Australian only album Alive—the title being a play on the rumours caused by his public obscurity that Rodriguez had died years ago.

In 1991 both his albums were released on CD in South Africa for the first time. His fame in South Africa was completely unknown to him, until 1998 when his eldest daughter found a website dedicated to him on the internet. In 1998 he played his first South African Tour.

June 28, 1977: Much seen, but one of the very best - Tim Webb's HMAS Melbourne [II] at the Silver Jubilee review off Portsmouth.

June 28, 1977: Much seen, but one of the very best - Tim Webb's HMAS Melbourne [II] at the Silver Jubilee review off Portsmouth.

1874. This photo was on the first roll of warship photos that U.K. ships photographer Tim Webb ever took, and it continues to give him - and many others - pleasure today.

Much picked up from Flickr and reproduced on various warship websites, it's provence may have become a little confused. But Tim had purchased his first advanced camera specifically for the Silver Jubilee international fleet review in 1977, and says this photo of the RAN flagship was one of the best shots that he had caught on that June day. We can but agree. It is outstanding.

The second radome showing in the photo behind Melbourne's Skyhawk aircraft is on the French warship Duquesne, which was next on G Line behind HMAS Melbourne [II] that day.

Just recently Tim's 1977 photo of HMAS Melbourne [II] has again been reproduced for the Schmap Melbourne 11th Edition, a well-known US-based online tourism guide that features the HMAS Castlemaine Museum Ship in its presentations of local Melbourne attractions, and which generally acquires permissions on RAN ship photos to keep it fresh and changing.

Although already seen in our mutual Nautical Pictures of Interest group postings on Flickr, I also made a special request to Tim - whom I chat with now and then - for the photos inclusion here. I very much wanted it to appear in the Unofficial RAN Centenary photostream too.

Photo: Tim Webb, U.K., reproduced with kind permission for the Unofficial RAN Centenary 1911-2011 Photostream.

OM 2009-2010 Edition (with Review Cards and Student Website Printed Access Card)

This all started with you, in your own classrooms and hallways. Through conversations, focus groups, surveys, and interviews, we asked you to tell us how you learn. When and where you study, and… why? Some of your comments surprised us, while others didn't: "(the book is) too long" and "too expensive." Many of you said you didn't even buy books--new OR used. And then we turned to your professors for input on the solutions that you liked best: briefer chapters and flash cards. Faculty from schools across the nation joined us online and in face-to-face focus groups to enhance our student offerings. The result? To accommodate the busy and diverse lifestyles of today's learners, a less than 385-page paperback that includes a suite of learning aids, like flash cards, cases, data sets, games, and quizzes. Introducing OM, an innovative approach to teaching and learning Operations Management that is best designed to reach you: today's students. OM says it all using only two letters--and not only is it how most students abbreviate Operations Management in a text message, this is also the way it is referred to in most course catalogues. Most importantly, OM represents the new solution that you and your professors built together.
