1966 Series VI Hillman Minx
The Audax body was designed by the Rootes Group, but helped by the Raymond Loewy design organisation, who were involved in the design of Studebaker coupés in 1953. The car went through a series of annual face lifts each given a Series number, replacing the Phase number used on the previous Minxes; there was no Series IV. The engine was new for the model with overhead valves a first for a post war Hillman. Over the years the engine grew from 1390 cc (in the Series I and II) to 1725 cc in the Series VI. A variety of manual transmissions, with column or floor change, and automatic transmissions were offered. For the automatic version, the Series I and II used a Lockheed Manumatic two pedal system (really only a semi-automatic), the Phase III a Smiths Easidrive and the V/VI a Borg Warner.
A Series III deLuxe saloon with 1494 cc engine tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1958 had a top speed of 76.9 mph and could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 25.4 seconds. A fuel consumption of 31.8 miles per gallon was recorded. The test car cost £794 including taxes of £265.
There were Singer Gazelle and Sunbeam Rapier variants of all these Hillman Minx models, and the names were again used on derivatives in the later Rootes Arrow range. Some models were re-badged in certain markets, with the Sunbeam and Humber marques used for some exports.
The New Zealand importer/assembler Todd Motors created the Humber 80 (Minx) and 90 (Super Minx) as separate models - identical apart from the badges - as a way to secure scarce additional import licences for CKD assembly kits.

Lancia Fulvia
The Lancia Fulvia is an Italian car introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963 by Lancia. It was produced by that company through 1976. Fulvias are notable for their role in automobile racing history, including winning the International Rally Championship in 1972.
The Fulvia Berlina was designed by Antonio Fessia, to replace the Lancia Appia with which it shared almost no components. The Appia was a rear wheel drive car, however, while the Fulvia moved to front wheel drive like the Flavia; the general engineering design of the Fulvia was identical to that of the Flavia with the major exception of the engine, the Flavia having a four cylinder horizontally opposed engine and the Fulvia a 'Narrow Angle' vee configuration as featured on most production Lancias from the Lambda. The Fulvia used a longitudinal engine mounted in front of its transaxle. An independent suspension in front used wishbones and a single leaf spring, while a solid axle with a panhard rod and leaf springs was used in back. Four wheel Dunlop disc brakes were fitted to 1st series Fulvias. With the introduction of the 2nd Series in 1970 the brakes were uprated with larger Girling calipers all round and a brake servo. The handbrake design was also changed - using separate drums and brake-shoes operating on the rear wheels.
One element that was new was the narrow-angle V4 engine. Designed by Zaccone Mina, it used a narrow angle (12°53'28") and was mounted well forward at a 45° angle. The engine is a DOHC design with a one camshaft operating all intake valves and another operating all exhaust valves. The very narrow angle of the cylinders allowed for use of a single cylinder head.
Displacement began at just 1091 cc with 58 bhp with a 72 mm bore and 67 mm stroke. A higher (9.0:1) compression ratio and the fitment of twin Solex carburettors raised power to 71 bhp soon after.
The engine was bored to 6 mm to enlarge displacement to 1216 cc for the HF model. This, and some tuning, raised output to 80 to 88 bhp.
The engine was re-engineered with a slightly narrower bank angle (12°45'28") and longer (69.7 mm) stroke for 1967. Three displacements were produced: 1199 cc (74 mm bore), 1231 cc (75 mm bore), and 1298 cc (77 mm bore). The new 1298 cc engine was produced in two versions; the type 818.302 produced 87 bhp at 6000 rpm and was fitted to 1st series Coupes, Sports and Berlina GTE and later to the 2nd Series Berlina. The Type 818.303 was first produced with 92 hp and was fitted to the 1st series Coupe Rallye S and Sport S. For the 2nd Series Coupe and Sport power was slightly reduced to 90 hp at 6000 rpm. The 1199 cc engine was only fitted to the Berlina sold in Greece.
The engine was completely reworked for the new 1.6 HF with an even-narrower angle (11°20' now) and longer 75 mm stroke combined with a bore of 82 mm gave it a displacement of 1584 cc, and power ranged from 115 to 132 bhp depending on tune.
The Fulvia was available in three variants:- 'Berlina' (4 door saloon) 'Coupe' and 'Sport' an alternative coupe designed and built by Zagato on the Coupe floorpan. he Fulvia saloon was updated for 1969 with a 20 mm (0.8 in) longer wheelbase, new styling, and an updated interior.
A CAUTIONARY TALE
I bought our starship mileage Skoda Favorit 1.9 SDI off Ebay about four years ago for £1500 and it is now approaching its 200,000 mile birthday. For the most part it has been frugal and reliable until a month ago.
It started with the nearside brake caliper stuck on fast. As the car failed outside a garage I had used before in the distant past I left it there. They replaced the nearside caliper and the master cylinder, as this had been affected by the brake fluid, which had boiled.
I got the car back, but both front calipers were now binding, albeit only slightly but enough for both front wheels to become extremley hot after a few miles. I took the car back to the garage, where they declared the valve in the pipe that connects the vacuum pump to the servo was faulty causing the latter to recieve to much vacuum, so they replaced it. Still no better.
The garage then declared that either the servo or the vacuum pump must be faulty as there was nothing else to replace. As a new servo is over £300, I obtained a second hand one and a vacuum pump from Ebay, these were fitted by the garage, but still no improvement.
By this time there now really was nothing left to change, so I agred to take the car back faulty, as long as I only paid for the new parts they had used, to whit one nearside caliper, a master cylinder and a vacuum pipe.
At this stage a mate of mine, who had links to the garage trade, suggested we do it ourselves, two days later we had found the fault. The servo is connected to the master cylinder by a rod with a flat head at one end. This head engages bayonet style, behind three clips on a metal pad within the spring of the servo. When the garage had attached the master cylinder to the brake servo, prior to bolting up, they had simply slotted the rod into the servo and it was resting on top of the three clips, rather than behind them. This meant that rod was in effect too long and parially applying the piston in the master cylinder, when the brakes were supposed to be off.
Problem solved, well not quite. A couple of days later the clutch packed in and had to be replaced. This was put down to the fact that the clutch had been trying to power the car against the resistance of the sticking calipers.
"Some guys get all the luck", but the car is now running properly.

427 Cobra engine and related bits:
One reason the Cobras handle so well- see how the mass of the engine is between the wheels, not over the front wheels?
: Left to right
- oil line between oil cooler (below water radiator) and filter setup between water radiator ^ header.
- Engine coolant radiator, leaning back for more cooling in less height.
- Square tube structures bracing radiator
- Inner wheel arch - the body is the light gray bit, the rusty arc is a brake disk or hub. This is not a good angle to see the upper A arm or what it attaches to. The little black pigtail at about 2:00 on the arc may be a brake line. The rusty bit below that may be one of the front cross tubes.
- Oil filter and hoses, (near to viewer). The two hoses, left to right, are the peripheral return hose and the center supply to the filter. You can just see a hint of FRAM orange under the left most oil hose.
- Engine coolant header tank, above and ahead of the water pump, etc. All the belt-driven accessories are under this tank. Note pressure cap with drain tube for the relief valve, top hose from radiator, additional hose at back (small diameter)
- Oil filler/breather cap - a slip-fit over a pipe from the block/intake manifold
- Distributor - black plastic cap, black wires, the one wire coming forward and toward the viewer may be the secondary from the coil...
- Air cleaner. This is just the pleated paper filter, expanded metal cover to keep fingers out of the paper and big, soft, orange gaskets. Two planks of cast aluminum, the lower one with holes for the carb intakes. the upper one with holes for the threaded rod that the wing-nuts clamp on.(wing nuts and rods are missing in this photo)
- Carter carbureters. Note mechanical linkage between them (stiff wire). I believe the fuel line is on the other side. These are 4 barrel, each, one per cylinder.
- "Cobra Le Mans" cast aluminum valve covers
- black plastic oil fill plug - when I added oil, this is where it went
- 4 wire ignition 'loom', with 4 high voltage ignition wires leading from distributor to spark plugs
- little piece of cardboard from one spare parts box or other
- assorted electrical wires, instrument sensors, supply/return line for the heater
- firewall

Co-axial hanged big wheels, for swords. In race these are wings.
now follows: translation of script about cars -as earlier printed in Dutch-.
The current car use and the current car production leads to enormous damage.
Point 1: A good friend, prof. Marcel Donze [up to 2002 working at the TUDelft, Holland] says: "People with money, who wants to show that, rather take a golden hood. Carrying jewels is not detrimental for the environment, while burning fossil fuel is. In other words, a car with 500 cc engine contents is enough, because one may not drive more rapidly than 120 km / hours, and in the city logically only 80 km / hours.
Point 2: The roads are, in a certain way, to compare to as rivers and also are roads to compare to as railtracks.
Analysis: rivers flow rapidly on steep terrain and in bottlenecks and flow slowly in wide waterways and on flat area. Water will never catch up on spots where the river remains equally wide. In the middle of the river, however, the water will flow a bit more rapidly, because the water undergoes resistance at the river sides. But in general, one can state that a certain volume of water water molecules does not have the tendency to overtake another. Each volume of water molecules, in an evenly wide river running over an evenly steep slope, is driven by exactly the same driving force, generated by gravity. Also trains over one single track cannot overtake each other. This is only possible at train yards and at stations.
It is therefore scientifically perceptible that the traffic-jam problem is mainly motivated because the motorists overtake -, and catch up with, each other on broad ways, while they slow down in bottlenecks. This behavior is exactly the opposite of how water streams. Thus, just through bottlenecks motorists must accelerate, and this is only possible as the motorists on the broad ways drive more slowly than 80 km / hours; because 120 km / hours is the legal maximum, which speed is then desirably used only through the bottlenecks and on lanes with inserting traffic.
In cities such as Hong Kong and Beijing it is much busier then in many of our cities in the west and for this reason applies there, if there a traffic-jam arises, all several speed zones at the roads preceding those traffic-jams. The principle is simple: at the moment a traffic-jam arises, then the maximum speeds are adapted directly on the preceding freeways. One can do this by the application of different speed zones on the freeways, by means of letting for example red, orange, yellow, brown, blue, green and white lights blink along, or above, the roads, representing respectively 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30 and 20km / hr. Just before the jam, the white lamp -20km / hr- is switch on, a couple kilometer further upstream burns then the green lamp file -30km / hr- etc. This way everyone continues to drive slowly. There is no stopping and going as we do in the west. By eliminating this stopping and going we save fuel and reduce smog. In China everyone listens to these recommendations which are well for the environment, because they have serious smog.
In the Netherlands the current recommended speeds do not work. In order to solve the traffic-jam problem, the Dutch have to consider the condition to make the recommended speeds binding, and by pronouncing a law which says that overtaking is prohibited. Because, trains also stay in the same order as they slow down for a station and water flows also unanimous all together slower if there is dam ahead. Thus, it is easy prove that the traffic-jam is caused by speeding. We, the Dutch, live in a free country, but on the motorway binding appointments are necessary, because the freedom is abused by, let's say, ten percents of the motorists. Conclusion: motorists can improve their flow behavior by not overtaking each other, for at least during the peak hours. The trick is to push each other through the bottlenecks. We must strive to slow driving fronts, on the freeways, to be able to accelerate then and only then, from 80 to 120km / hr, through bottlenecks.
The right of strongest is not well for a honest partitioning. Just look at our freeways. The freeways are terrorized by fastest cars. For instance, they do not insert on time. Motorists who do insert on time, stick to the recommendation speed and drive on the slow lanes make therefore space for the speeding motorists. In fact, a reversed world. Because, when a motorist drives at the recommendation speed on the fast lane, this driver gets a ticket by the police. The impact of not working together as a water flow translates itself, particularly in the cities, in daily wiping away the fumagine of the window ledge and the number of children with lung diseases increases terrifying. In that light, the freedom of the motorists not to keep their selves to certain game rules on the freeways, is a crime to especially children in the cities, the planet itself and all life on it. For this reas
I found the engine.
A hint to what happened to this old abandoned Jeep.
Apparently it suffered a problem with the engine and had to be removed. For what ever reason the project went no further and the dismantled engine was throw in the back. It is parked near a abandoned mobile home.
I can see the starter, head gasket, oil pan, and what looks like the crank all the way in the back.
The valve cover also seams to be there as well.
Three photos of this old Jeep uploaded tonight.

WHAT IS A PINCH VALVE : WHAT IS A
What is a pinch valve : Jado 816177150 32 port diverter valve : Toilet fill valve problems.
What Is A Pinch Valve
- A pinch valve is a full bore or fully ported type of control valve which uses a pinching effect to obstruct fluid flow. There are a few types of pinch valves based upon application.
- A device used to pinch and unpinch flexible tubing for the purpose of controlling flow.
- Pneumatic valve used to control the on-off abrasive flow.
- What Is is the eighth album by guitarist/vocalist Richie Kotzen.
- prize indemnity? In everyday terms, Prize Indemnity is prize coverage without the prize risk. It's that simple.
- Is simply the glossary of terms and acronyms, you can find them below in alphabetic order. Fundamental concepts and acronyms may also have an associated Blog post, if that is the case the acronym or term will be hyper-linked to the respective post.
noisy paint can idea
I made this based on a Depression era budget toy idea that my Dad showed me back in the 1960s.
My Dad and his brothers would get what they called a varnish can (basically a quart size (0.9 liter) paint can), and punch a nail hole near the base with a nail. They'd then spit a few times into the can near the hole, then put a pinch of calcium carbide in that and pound on the lid real quick. A match would be applied to the nail hole - but keep the face clear of the lid - and if they got it right the lid would fly off with a HUGE bang. A lid from a quart size can will easily clear a two story house with many feet to spare.
They said the calcium carbide was often obtained by sweet talking an auto repair shop owner with acetylene welding gear. Often a small general repair shop doing welding on only once or twice a week would use a calcium carbide acetylene generator rather than have to pay rent on an extra tank. Also, at that time, calcium carbide was used for carbide mining lights and generally available in Pennsylvania in hardware stores.
A variation on this idea was to snag a valve stem from a tire repair shop from an unrepairable tube that had "blown out." This was the 1930s, long before tubeless tires. A hole would be put into the side of the can to accommodate the valve, the valve installed from the inside with the stem on outside, and sealed with rubber cement. The lid would be put into place, and blown off with the aid of a bicycle pump on the valve stem. I made this variation, and while it works, is not as loud as the carbide version and a LOT more work per bang. But that was the Depression, and a cheap noisemaker when there was no money to buy a few penny packs of firecrackers, let alone carbide....
The pictured variation uses a gallon paint can with a good lid seal, and an igniter used for gasoline/propane mantle lanterns (and hair spray powered potato cannons B-} ). Spray in a bit of hair spray, press on the lid, make sure the handle and vital body parts are not in the line of fire, and twist the igniter to set it off. HELPFUL HINT: this thing refuses to fire with hair spray fuel if the air temperature is much below 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.5 Celsius), which is fine for the 4th of July celebrations.
Rubbing alcohol, the 70% by volume stuff from the over-the-counter medicine section of many stores, works too. About 5 squirts from a medicine dropper seems to be about right, but YMMV. Roll the can around in your hands about 1 minute to get the alcohol to evaporate before firing. Again, the outside air temperature should be quite high for rubbing alcohol to work successfully, 85 to 90 F. (29.5 to 32.2 C.).
Even though this doesn't make a loud bang, one dog is terribly frightened by it.
20091017 0160...This water came from the bottom of my backpack
I got the sidewalk wet when I shook out my large daypack, which had a puddle inside. The water came from my Platypus water bladder. It and the drinking tube were inside my pack with everything else. At the trailhead I planned to set up the drinking tube outside the pack for normal use.
Something in the pack had pinched the drinking tube's bite valve, causing water to flow out, creating a puddle at the bottom of the pack. Stuff at the bottom of the pack got wet: my rain parka was drenched. I discovered this mess when I pulled the drinking tube out of the pack to fasten it to a shoulder strap. What a bummer!
After emptying the pack, I turned it upside down and the water poured out. I went hiking with my smaller pack. During the hike I laid my soggy rain parka on the rock to dry out.
Photographed at the trailhead parking lot at Delicate Arch Viewpoint.

WATER VALVE LOCK. WATER VALVE
Water valve lock. Hydraulic solenoid valves. 45rfe valve body
Water Valve Lock
- An electro-mechanical device that opens a valve to allow water to flow. The electric current causes a magnetic field to develop, in the solenoid coil, which then moves a metallic plunger. The plunger in turn opens the valve. May also be called a FILL VALVE.
- a fastener fitted to a door or drawer to keep it firmly closed
- a strand or cluster of hair
- A mechanism for keeping a door, lid, etc., fastened, typically operated only by a key of a particular form
- A similar device used to prevent the operation or movement of a vehicle or other machine
- fasten with a lock; "lock the bike to the fence"
- (in wrestling and martial arts) A hold that prevents an opponent from moving a limb
