???

There is an anime about Mahjong. MAHJONG. That probably shouldn't surprise me, but it does.

D.Gray seiyuu

Seiyuu for (most of) the main characters of D.Gray-man have been announced. I must say that I'm quite pleased with most of them.Allen Walker: Kobayashi Sanae - The only character I've actually heard her do is Nagisa-sensei from LOVELESS, which is an amusing connection. She's done a couple of male characters, one of them being Jun in the Rozen Maiden drama CDs. It's been a while since I saw LOVELESS so I can't really remember what her voice sounds like, but I personally would have picked someone who's performed more (and older) male characters. *shrug* She could turn out to be excellent, though.Kanda Yuu: Sakurai Takahiro - YES AWESOME. I've noticed a couple of people expressing misgivings about Sakurai as Kanda, but I think he's perfect.Komui Li: Konishi Katsuyuki - ANOTHER AWESOME. Admittedly, I've only heard him play serious roles, so I don't know how well he'll do Komui's spazziness, but his voice itself fits.Linali Li: Itou Shizuka - I've never seen any of the anime she's in, but she does Himawari in xxxHOLiC, who Linali is a little similar to, so she should be fine. The Millennium Earl: Takiguchi Junpei - Of all his roles, I only recognize the narrator from Karin, who had a serious voice, and Dr Kozumi from Cyborg 009, which I've only seen dubbed. As such, I can't really comment.Cross Marian: Touchi Hiroki - (pixietails, you've seen Trinity Blood, right? Was it dubbed or subbed? Touchi did Abel, so I'm wondering if you know what he sounds like.) That said, he does Seishirou in Tsubasa -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-, so he should be able to pull off creepy!Cross. And last, but certainly not least,River Wenham: Okiayu Ryoutarou - OMFG YES *fangirl spasm* The Australian character gets the awesomest voice, how cool is that? ♥♥♥Now I really want to know who's going to do Lavi AND TIKI.I'm also really wondering now how long the anime is going to be, and whether they're going to follow the same sequence of events as the manga, or whether they're going to do more of an FMA and start with Allen and Mana rather than Allen on his way to the Organization's headquarters. If it's going to be a short anime, that means we'll probably never get to see Bak and Fou and the others at the Chinese branch. And, you know, animated Bak would be MADE OF AWESOME. (<- Bak fan) Or the rest of the Noah family, like Skin and Jasdavi.

D.Gray anime

Some sketches and color pictures of the D.Gray-man anime have been posted at dgray_man. The sketches don't look too bad, and the color picture is okay. The colors don't look too great to me, particularly on Kanda's hair, but that could just be the crappy quality of the scan. I'll wait for more information before I pass judgement on it, though.Naturally, though, some people are complaining about it. Really, people, what makes you think that D.Gray is going to be a high-quality anime with detailed character designs? It's Shounen Jump. Of course it's not going to be all that high-budget. Either it's going to be a long-running anime like BLEACH and Naruto with typical TV-quality animation and the occasional filler, or it's going to be a short anime with between twenty and thirty episodes with slightly higher production values. I just wish people would stop bitching every time a manga is animated. It's a different medium and they're working with a budget, so of course some things will be changed. I'm not exceptionally excited, since although I like D.Gray, it isn't my favorite by a long shot, but I dislike the way some people automatically assume the anime is going to suck based on two poor-quality pictures.I'm up to episode three of Nobuta. wo Produce and am loving it. I was downloading episode four, but I accidentally clicked cancel when there was only fifteen minutes left. I almost wanted to cry. Also, re: chapter 125 of TRC: if CLAMP does anything bad to Kurogane after what happened in this chapter, I think I really will cry.

Houshin Engi picked up by VIZ + fic recs

VIZ has picked up Houshin Engi. Admittedly, my first thought went something like, "I wonder just how ugly they can make the covers", because goddamn, I hate the style of a lot of their covers. Besides, I can't really comment on what the quality of the translation will be like, since I'm not familiar with current VIZ translations, the most recent ones I've read being the flipped Fushigi Yuugi. However, if it attracts more people to the fandom, I'm all for it.I trawled the HE section of ff.net, and managed to weed out several fics I quite like. There was a lot of stupid humor fics and a crossover with Fushigi Yuugi which I originally thought could have had potential, but turned out to be so poorly paragraphed I couldn't follow it, but there were a few gems.Declaration, by hypertiaGen, hints of Youzen/Taikoubou. Youzen makes a statement that takes Taikoubou aback.Flat Flower, by Arashi1Gen, hints of Taiitsu Shinjin/Nataku. When did Taiitsu begin to think of Nataku as more than just a tool?A Working Relationship, by KDashHet, Buou/Yuukyou. In a quiet moment between rebuilding a kingdom, Buou and Yuukyou take a step towards a new relationship. Post-manga.In Terrorem, by BluePardGen. It's been a long time since anyone made Shinkouhyou bleed.Mirror Image, by SnarfGen. Ou Tenkun hates Taikoubou, but there is an inescapable bond between them. VOL 22 SPOILERSMirror Mirror, by JoydropGen, heavily inspired by Mirror Image. Taikoubou and his reflection. VOL 22 SPOILERSGoing through one author's profile, I also found this.Seven Days to Eternity, by XDSaint Beast, somewhat AU, hints of Yuda/Shin. Yuda had questions. Shin had answers. It makes me very sad that it's so hard to find HE mp3s. I've managed to recover four image songs and a .wma version of Hi no Ataru Basho at 32 kbps, but that's it. I want Tenka's non-depressing songs. I miss my seiyuu version of Hi no Ataru Basho. I want 1 2 3 back. I want the silliness of Daijoubu ssa. Why does no one seem to have them?! *cries*... Now that I'm over that. I really love A PROOF OF BIRTH ~Tanjou no Akashi~, but the thought of Nataku singing it almost makes me want to burst out in nervous giggles. Since I've never seen the anime, I can't say how Miyata-san does as Nataku, but I listen to that song and I think that his voice sounds better suited to Raishinshi, not Nataku. And I wouldn't have picked Matsumoto Rika to do Raishinshi either. (I tend to associate her with Bakura, and Raishinshi ... is so not Bakura.)Also, if anyone wrote Sengyoku/Doukouson, I would think that was totally awesome.

BLEACH VA List

VIZ has announced the cast for the BLEACH dub. Expect wank.I can't really say much about this since I don't recognize most of the VAs, but the ones I do recognize are ... interesting.Ishida's VA did Achilles in Cyborg 009 wtf. He also did Zazie and Beshimi, so I guess that proves he's somewhat versatile.Ichigo is Vash. I just can't get that association out of my head. God. I like Bosch--he did an awesome job as Vash--but I don't think I can imagine him as Ichigo.

... Iiinteresting.

TokyoPop has renamed Yorozuya Toukaidou Honpo to Satisfaction Guaranteed. Volume one is slated for release in November.Granted, "Jack-of-All-Trades Toukaidou Branch" sounds a bit boring, but "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sounds silly. The covers look nice, the volume descriptions don't make it sound too stupid, and given that TP's standards have improved since their CCS days I'm willing to bet that they'd do at least a half-decent job of the translation, but I'm still stuck on the name. Here's hoping they don't do anything odd to Sequence if/when they release that.

I'm not dead. Really, I'm not.

Just realized it's been over a month since I last updated. Oops.Very little has happened, really. Got a new fandom. Got a mobile phone. Slept a ton. Changed my layout again, though I'm not completely satisfied with it.I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday. Beetlejuice was supposed to be on as well, but CSI was instead, the bastards. I liked TRHPS--it certainly isn't my favorite movie of all time, but it was enjoyable. My new fandom is D.Gray-man. The main character, Allen, reminds me a bit of Ed in that they have similar values (early Allen even vaguely resembles Ed). Lavi's my favorite character, because it seems I like either the stoic sort (e.g. Aoshi) or the more playful kind (e.g. Raiha). It's going to become an anime this year and while I'm not jumping up and down with glee, I'm interested in what they're going to make of it.Generally speaking, I'm an advocate for using the official spellings of character names. In Dorakishi fandom I use Alfeage and Teceous instead of Alfeegi and Tetheus (etc). However, I just can't bring myself to do so some of the names for D.Gray. The official spellings are way too WTF-inducing. A few examples:Fandom spelling vs. official spellingRabi - Lavi (I have no problems here. Rabi and Lavi are both actual names and neither looks too odd.)Linali Li - Lenalee Lee (Considering she's supposed to be Chinese, I think spelling her name as Lenalee is a strange move.)River Wenham - Reever Wenhamm (I like the sound of River better, but Reever's not too awful.)Aleister Crowley - Arystar Krory (... I think this speaks for itself.)Tiki Mick - Tyki Mikk (Makes me think of "womyn" and "vampyre" and other such pointless 'y's.)Rhode Camelot - Road Kamelot (Admittedly, the idea of someone being called "Road" made me snicker a little.)See what I mean?I have realized that there is actually a sort of antagonist I like. I still can't see the appeal in villains, but I've been noticing a pattern lately wherein I've liked a particular "bad" character: ones who are technically "bad" but not really willingly.Joshua is one of my favorite Chrno Crusade characters. He's a cold-blooded murderer and insane to boot. (Aion's the one who controls his behavior, however, not Joshua.)I find Kurei of Rekka no Honoo fascinating, and he's also a murderer. (I think it was the line about how he "left his heart with a woman" that sealed it for me.)I like Enishi of Rurouni Kenshin and the guy is batshit. (You gotta have sympathy for him, though.)In D.Gray, I like Tiki. Of course, since not much about him has been revealed, I don't know how well he fits.I'm kind of surprised to discover that I like any kind of antagonist. My adoration for the rather bastardly Fuuron of Haou Airen continues to defy logic, however.

Another RL update.

I've been somewhat busy (at least, in comparison to my normal slug-like life). Yesterday I had a meeting with MADEC to set up a plan for intensive job support. That took about an hour, then Mum and I browsed the shops for a while. I bought a white bag since I wanted something smaller than my Rusty bag but something big enough to actually fit something in, a copy of Gone With the Wind (holy crap is it huge), and a pair of backless sneakers because they were ten dollars.Today I went to Bendigo with Dad and wandered around by myself for two hours. I bought Mum a birthday present and Rammstein's latest CD. Sanity had a lot of stuff on sale, but unfortunately I couldn't afford much. :( I saw quite a few boxsets--House, SGA, My Little Pony, Care Bears, for example--and a lot of anniversary editions of older movies like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Singing in the Rain, and Casablanca. I also randomly had a very powerful urge to get my eyebrow pierced. It was somewhat odd.Returning to the Rammstein CD. Rosenrot is currently my favorite track, but I also quite like Mann gegen Mann and Stirb nich vor mir // Don't Die Before I Do. Benzin is pretty good, I imagine Zerstren would be perfect bad-mood music, and I don't mind the other tracks. The only exception is Te quiero puta! because it makes me WTF. It's practically perky and ALL IN SPANISH. It's funny to listen to Till singing in Spanish, but it's just too damn weird for me.

Ditching Puripuri.

I've decided to ditch watching the Princess Princess anime. It makes me kind of sad that the anime adaption of a manga I like lacks the qualities I loved in the manga in the first place, but when seeing a link to a torrent of the newest episode makes you go, "Aw, man, I really don't want to download that," there's not much point watching it. So, farewell to Puripuri. However, I'm going to continue watching Gakuen Heaven. I like the art style better and the only characters I want to throttle are Kakeru and Wataru, who are minor characters. I've also gotten interested in Saiunkoku Monogatari. Saiunkoku Monogatari's setting is somewhat reminiscent of Kounan from Fushigi Yuugi--it has that Ancient China look and feel, only minus the magical aspect. Shuurei, the heroine, actually has a brain. She's intelligent (the only reason she hasn't aced the national exam to become an official is because she's a woman), cheerful but not overly enthusiastic, and has a quiet determination that I like. In short, she's nothing like the typical silly, reckless shoujo heroine. Ryuuki, the hero, is a darling and episode two has several scenes that made me laugh out loud. The only real downside to the series lies in the quality of the video files themselves--the audio goes out of sync a lot, the video freezes occasionally, and it frequently pixellates. I'm enjoying it enough to stick with it, though (unless, of course, it does a Puripuri).YES FAKE SHIZUMASA HAS A NAME NOW YES YES YES. As you can tell, I'm pretty excited about that. He's Touguu Takanari, Shizumasa's older twin brother. (It's a bit of a clich to have him turn out to be Shizumasa's twin, but it makes sense. The likelihood of there existing another boy in the world who looks exactly like Shizumasa and the Touguus being aware of him is pretty damn low.) Of course, this raises other questions: why doesn't anyone seem to know that he exists? Why is Shizumasa, the younger, the one always in the spotlight?I looked up Takanari's name kanji, and I think they're pretty interesting. (taka) means "tall", "high", or "expensive"; (nari) is the kanji for the verb naru, which can mean "to become", "to reach". As such, I suppose you could interpret his name as meaning "reach high" or "become great". Interestingly enough, forms some compound words very fitting for our beloved Takkun. means "upstart", means "to be reduced to ...", and means "to impersonate". At this point, I'm hoping Haine realizes what a dick Shizumasa is and goes for Takanari, because the poor guy deserves someone to care about him rather than Shizumasa for a change.I've also been re-visiting Rurouni Kenshin and investigating the history of the era. It's actually pretty fascinating. I've learned stuff about Sagara Souzou, the Satsuma Rebellion, the Treaty of Kanagawa, sonnou joui, and other assorted stuff. Learning about the Bakumatsu would have been much more interesting than 20th century Chinese history.

Princess Princess + Gakuen Heaven

This morning I watched Princess Princess episode three and Gakuen Heaven episode one. I'm a bit disappointed that Puripuri has had an Obligatory Shitty Art Episode on its THIRD EPISODE. I can hack bad art if I like the series enough, but one would hope the art wouldn't take such a nosedive so early.Quick synopsis: it's inter-school competition time for the clubs, so everyone is training as hard as they can to get to the national finals. The princesses have been charged with the duty of keeping everyone's morale up so they can get there. As such, Arisada has given them a handbook of instructions to follow, which include cheering for them at every practice. Mikoto hates this, and whines about it. Yuujirou insults and gives him verbal smackdowns at every turn. Eventually Mikoto gives in. However, he's then horrified to discover that Arisada's advice has been so effective that nearly all fifteen clubs have made it to the national finals.Back to the subject of bad animation. Now, my standards for "bad" are pretty low--even slightly bad stuff can turn me off. The art itself remained okay for most of this episode, but there were a few scenes that looked like the artists were trying to make it as ugly as possible. I offer three caps as evidence. (Please ignore the graininess of the caps, ImageReady was being a bit bitchy.)This one isn't too bad, but the shadows under their eyes make them look hungover.I really think this speaks for itself. So does this one.I'm also really annoyed by Mikoto in this episode. He wouldn't stop whining. Yuujirou was kind of mean with his constant smackdowns, but I can understand why he was. I wanted to throttle Mikoto myself and I quite liked him in Kakumei no Hi. I think Arisada is making up for Mikoto, though. He's got everyone jumping when he says jump and they aren't even fully aware of it.Staring at Arisada's fluffy hair got me comparing the anime and manga character designs again, so I picked out some caps and scans to compare them side-by-side, and wow, the changes are incredible in some. In particular, I really prefer Mikoto's manga design.Kouno Tooru Shihoudani Yuujirou Yutaka Mikoto Sakamoto Akira Arisada Shuuya Whereas Puripuri is BL-hinting shoujo, Gakuen Heaven really is BL. It's even in the title. (The full name of the anime is Gakuen Heaven - Boys Love Hyper! and the manga is Gakuen Heaven - Boys Love Scramble!) Hell, even the school is called BL Gakuen (Bell Liberty Gakuen in full). The premise of GH is that Itou Keita, an ordinary boy, has received a letter of admission into the elite BL Gakuen, where people with extraordinary talents are schooled. You can't get into the school by paying your way or by taking an entrance exam; it's more like Hogwarts. Keita, however, is neither very smart nor athletic--his only "talent" is his luck. The series follows Keita's life in this very interesting school.I first read the first chapter of this series on yaoi_daily solely because I recognized Higuri-sensei's name. The main thing that hit me is that there is a lot of characters introduced right off the bat. The first episode of the anime takes things much more slowly, but there's still thirteen characters to remember. Since I'm not that good at remembering names, I capped each character when they appeared and wrote down their names.Itou Keita, the protagonist. Seiyuu: Fukuyama Jun (amusingly enough, Fukujun also does Kouno).Endou Kazuki, Keita's classmate. Seiyuu: Sakurai Takahiro.Student council president Niwa Tetsuya, the school's "King" and my favorite thus far. Seiyuu: Konishi Katsuyuki (Konitan~!).Student council vice-president Nakajima Hideaki. Nakajima is so much a Tatsumi clone, his seiyuu is even Morikawa Toshiyuki.Saionji Kaoru of the treasury, the "Queen". Seiyuu: Kamiya Hiroshi (who also does Arisada).Saionji's pet assistant, Shichijou Omi. Seiyuu: Tsuboi Tomohiro.Archer and dorm head Shinomiya Kouji. Seiyuu: Okiayu Ryoutarou (whoo!).Iwai Takuto the artist. I don't know his seiyuu.Cyclist Taki Shunsuke. Seiyuu: Suzumura Kenichi.Matsuoka Jin, the school doctor. Seiyuu: Narita Ken.The twins Ozawa Kakeru and Wataru. Seiyuu: Takeuchi Ken and Mizushima Takahiro.Umino Satoshi the biology teacher. Seiyuu: Kawakami Tomoko.Umino's really freaking evil cat Tonosama. You know what's even scarier? There are MORE CHARACTERS.Besides that, though: the animation quality is excellent and I'm praying that it doesn't experience a quality drop like Puripuri has. I like the music, I like the seiyuu, and I'm interested enough in the whys of Keita's transfer and who his seme will be to keep watching. Besides, it's Higuri You! She's awesome!EDIT: Can't believe I forgot this! oo There's a segment at the end of the episode that is so cracky you have to see it to believe it. Say hello to Hamham Heaven.

For some reason I can't spell "spam" to save my life.

I thought it was high time to catspam, since the cat has spent the past few hours sleeping peacefully on my bed. Now everyone can marvel over big fat evil ginger tomcats.I'm still curious as to why he loved this box so much. He could only just fit himself inside it and couldn't move, but he still got in it at any opportunity.Oh noes the demon cat is going to eat me.... This was so weird. He hates water. He almost never enters the bathroom. However, this one time he happily jumped in the bathtub by himself and sat there, even when I splashed water on him. (Plz to be ignoring the terrible state of the bath.)In other cat news, I think Peterbalds are strangely awesome. In addition, Dad bought a new car a couple of days ago. It's dark red, an automatic, and very nice. Not to mention that it actually works. The seat covers aren't exactly luxurious or anything but at least they're not made of the SCRATCHY MATERIAL OF DEATH like in the older cars.

Puripuri anime~

Puripuri is on the air! The first episode aired a day or two ago, but the torrent only decided to work for me this morning. The anime character designs lack the distinct art style of Tsuda-sensei and are more anime, but they are well-done. The animation is excellent, the colors vibrant, and the art lovely. The music is gorgeous (when the CD singles are released on BT, I'm going to be on them like a shot). The seiyuu are awesomely perfect. While I dislike some of the changes made and prefer the pacing of the manga, I still really enjoyed the episode. (And the SD faces were hilarious.)My main complaint would be Sakamoto's appearance. He looks weird and somehow younger. I don't like that.(Oh, and the character designer is the woman who created all those very gay Ban/Ginji pictures. As such, there's probably going to be a lot more BL hints in the anime than in the manga.)Kouno Tooru-kun, the protagonist.Shihoudani Yuujirou aka my beloved Yuu-chan.Everyone's favorite spazzy boy, Yutaka Mikoto-chan.I think it's Sakamoto's hair that really bugs me. Looks weird.Kouno is confused as to why there seems to be a girl sitting next to him.One of my favorite scenes in the episode. Yuu-chan's expression makes me laugh.Yuu-chan doesn't like the implication that his smile is inferior to Sakamoto-sama's.

A meme from Toriko.

... And I have a permanent account! I swear I'll try to update more often. -.- I've actually been spending most of my time playing Diablo II. It's kind of scary how easy it is to lose track of time and play for hours.1. Grab the nearest book.2. Open the book to page 123.3. Find the fifth sentence.4. Post the text of the next 7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.6. Tag five people. Well, I don't do tagging so I'll ignore this step. From A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin:Ironborn captains were proud and wilful, and did not go in awe of a man's blood. The islands were too small for awe, and a longship smaller still. If every captain was a king aboard his own ship, as was often said, it was small wonder they named the islands the land of ten thousand kings. And when you had seen your kings shit over the rail and turn green in a storm, it was hard to bend the knee and pretend they were gods. "The Drowned God makes men," old King Urron Redhand had once said, thousand of years ago, "but it's men who make crowns."A longship would have made the crossing in half the time as well. The Myraham was a wallowing tub, if truth be told, and he would not care to be aboard her in a storm.
