I've decided to ditch watching the Princess Princess anime. It makes me kind of sad that the anime adaption of a manga I like lacks the qualities I loved in the manga in the first place, but when seeing a link to a torrent of the newest episode makes you go, "Aw, man, I really don't want to download that," there's not much point watching it. So, farewell to Puripuri. However, I'm going to continue watching Gakuen Heaven. I like the art style better and the only characters I want to throttle are Kakeru and Wataru, who are minor characters. I've also gotten interested in Saiunkoku Monogatari. Saiunkoku Monogatari's setting is somewhat reminiscent of Kounan from Fushigi Yuugi--it has that Ancient China look and feel, only minus the magical aspect. Shuurei, the heroine, actually has a brain. She's intelligent (the only reason she hasn't aced the national exam to become an official is because she's a woman), cheerful but not overly enthusiastic, and has a quiet determination that I like. In short, she's nothing like the typical silly, reckless shoujo heroine. Ryuuki, the hero, is a darling and episode two has several scenes that made me laugh out loud. The only real downside to the series lies in the quality of the video files themselves--the audio goes out of sync a lot, the video freezes occasionally, and it frequently pixellates. I'm enjoying it enough to stick with it, though (unless, of course, it does a Puripuri).YES FAKE SHIZUMASA HAS A NAME NOW YES YES YES. As you can tell, I'm pretty excited about that. He's Touguu Takanari, Shizumasa's older twin brother. (It's a bit of a clich to have him turn out to be Shizumasa's twin, but it makes sense. The likelihood of there existing another boy in the world who looks exactly like Shizumasa and the Touguus being aware of him is pretty damn low.) Of course, this raises other questions: why doesn't anyone seem to know that he exists? Why is Shizumasa, the younger, the one always in the spotlight?I looked up Takanari's name kanji, and I think they're pretty interesting. (taka) means "tall", "high", or "expensive"; (nari) is the kanji for the verb naru, which can mean "to become", "to reach". As such, I suppose you could interpret his name as meaning "reach high" or "become great". Interestingly enough, forms some compound words very fitting for our beloved Takkun. means "upstart", means "to be reduced to ...", and means "to impersonate". At this point, I'm hoping Haine realizes what a dick Shizumasa is and goes for Takanari, because the poor guy deserves someone to care about him rather than Shizumasa for a change.I've also been re-visiting Rurouni Kenshin and investigating the history of the era. It's actually pretty fascinating. I've learned stuff about Sagara Souzou, the Satsuma Rebellion, the Treaty of Kanagawa, sonnou joui, and other assorted stuff. Learning about the Bakumatsu would have been much more interesting than 20th century Chinese history.
