This morning I watched Princess Princess episode three and Gakuen Heaven episode one. I'm a bit disappointed that Puripuri has had an Obligatory Shitty Art Episode on its THIRD EPISODE. I can hack bad art if I like the series enough, but one would hope the art wouldn't take such a nosedive so early.Quick synopsis: it's inter-school competition time for the clubs, so everyone is training as hard as they can to get to the national finals. The princesses have been charged with the duty of keeping everyone's morale up so they can get there. As such, Arisada has given them a handbook of instructions to follow, which include cheering for them at every practice. Mikoto hates this, and whines about it. Yuujirou insults and gives him verbal smackdowns at every turn. Eventually Mikoto gives in. However, he's then horrified to discover that Arisada's advice has been so effective that nearly all fifteen clubs have made it to the national finals.Back to the subject of bad animation. Now, my standards for "bad" are pretty low--even slightly bad stuff can turn me off. The art itself remained okay for most of this episode, but there were a few scenes that looked like the artists were trying to make it as ugly as possible. I offer three caps as evidence. (Please ignore the graininess of the caps, ImageReady was being a bit bitchy.)This one isn't too bad, but the shadows under their eyes make them look hungover.I really think this speaks for itself. So does this one.I'm also really annoyed by Mikoto in this episode. He wouldn't stop whining. Yuujirou was kind of mean with his constant smackdowns, but I can understand why he was. I wanted to throttle Mikoto myself and I quite liked him in Kakumei no Hi. I think Arisada is making up for Mikoto, though. He's got everyone jumping when he says jump and they aren't even fully aware of it.Staring at Arisada's fluffy hair got me comparing the anime and manga character designs again, so I picked out some caps and scans to compare them side-by-side, and wow, the changes are incredible in some. In particular, I really prefer Mikoto's manga design.Kouno Tooru Shihoudani Yuujirou Yutaka Mikoto Sakamoto Akira Arisada Shuuya Whereas Puripuri is BL-hinting shoujo, Gakuen Heaven really is BL. It's even in the title. (The full name of the anime is Gakuen Heaven - Boys Love Hyper! and the manga is Gakuen Heaven - Boys Love Scramble!) Hell, even the school is called BL Gakuen (Bell Liberty Gakuen in full). The premise of GH is that Itou Keita, an ordinary boy, has received a letter of admission into the elite BL Gakuen, where people with extraordinary talents are schooled. You can't get into the school by paying your way or by taking an entrance exam; it's more like Hogwarts. Keita, however, is neither very smart nor athletic--his only "talent" is his luck. The series follows Keita's life in this very interesting school.I first read the first chapter of this series on yaoi_daily solely because I recognized Higuri-sensei's name. The main thing that hit me is that there is a lot of characters introduced right off the bat. The first episode of the anime takes things much more slowly, but there's still thirteen characters to remember. Since I'm not that good at remembering names, I capped each character when they appeared and wrote down their names.Itou Keita, the protagonist. Seiyuu: Fukuyama Jun (amusingly enough, Fukujun also does Kouno).Endou Kazuki, Keita's classmate. Seiyuu: Sakurai Takahiro.Student council president Niwa Tetsuya, the school's "King" and my favorite thus far. Seiyuu: Konishi Katsuyuki (Konitan~!).Student council vice-president Nakajima Hideaki. Nakajima is so much a Tatsumi clone, his seiyuu is even Morikawa Toshiyuki.Saionji Kaoru of the treasury, the "Queen". Seiyuu: Kamiya Hiroshi (who also does Arisada).Saionji's pet assistant, Shichijou Omi. Seiyuu: Tsuboi Tomohiro.Archer and dorm head Shinomiya Kouji. Seiyuu: Okiayu Ryoutarou (whoo!).Iwai Takuto the artist. I don't know his seiyuu.Cyclist Taki Shunsuke. Seiyuu: Suzumura Kenichi.Matsuoka Jin, the school doctor. Seiyuu: Narita Ken.The twins Ozawa Kakeru and Wataru. Seiyuu: Takeuchi Ken and Mizushima Takahiro.Umino Satoshi the biology teacher. Seiyuu: Kawakami Tomoko.Umino's really freaking evil cat Tonosama. You know what's even scarier? There are MORE CHARACTERS.Besides that, though: the animation quality is excellent and I'm praying that it doesn't experience a quality drop like Puripuri has. I like the music, I like the seiyuu, and I'm interested enough in the whys of Keita's transfer and who his seme will be to keep watching. Besides, it's Higuri You! She's awesome!EDIT: Can't believe I forgot this! oo There's a segment at the end of the episode that is so cracky you have to see it to believe it. Say hello to Hamham Heaven.
