Chiefs' Johnson finally reaching elite status

He was fresh out of Texas, carrying all the expectations that come with being a first-round draft pick, and there he was surrounded by a bunch of grizzled veterans.''Now that I look around,'' Johnson said this week, ''I'm one of the older guys on the team.''It's true. Johnson may only be 28 years old, but the middle linebacker is already entering his seventh season in the league. Only seven of the 89 players who the Chiefs brought to training camp have been in the NFL longer, and just two of them are on the defensive side of the ball.''I kind of figure I'm in the prime of my career right now, mentally and physically,'' said Johnson, who is coming off easily the best year of his career. ''Everything is clicking on all cylinders.''It took a while - six years, 90 games and countless headaches, to be exact.When he was picked 15th overall in the 2005 draft, many envisioned Johnson as the next Derrick Thomas, the Chiefs' late nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker who represented the perfect blend of speed and athleticism. Even though Thomas was more adept at rushing the quarterback and Johnson at dropping into pass coverage, the two seemed to be cast from the same mold.Thomas was 6-foot-3, 243 pounds in his prime. Johnson is 6-3, 242 right now.Most of those comparisons were borne out Johnson's rookie season, when he started all 16 games and made 80 tackles and a couple of sacks. But his numbers started to decline the following year, and by 2009 he started just three games for the Chiefs and made 26 tackles all season.Then something seemed to click last summer. While he's careful to monitor the physical toll the two-a-days have on players, interim Ohio State coach Luke Fickell said sometimes players find it "takes more energy to concentrate through a two-hour meeting than it does to go out there and practice for an hour and 45 minutes."
"I think at this age, you need to be on the field to learn a lot more things," Fickell said. "As you get older in the NFL and you're 21, 22, 23, 34 — however old those guys are — you can get a lot more out of a two- or three-hour meeting."
Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State's Biletnikoff Award-winning receiver, said there is probably no right answer for whether two-a-days are beneficial across all of college football.
"You're still going to have some good teams and you're still going to have some bad. Some teams are going to blame it, some are going to say it was good," Blackmon said. "It's all about who you are."

Session wanted to stay in the division and seems to relish the chance to face his former team.

Coleman is likely to be the Jaguars’ nickel corner. He played there all last year for the Jets and gives the Jaguars an upgrade over Will Middleton, who did that last year. In all, the Jaguars’ defense made serious upgrades in talent that should be worth at least a win or two.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker Josh Scobee is entering his eighth season with the team. He made 22-of-28 field goals last season, including a 59-yarder to beat the Indianapolis Colts, and every extra point attempt. He played better early on than he did late. Punter Adam Podlesh left for a lucrative deal with the Chicago Bears, and the Jaguars replaced him with Matt Turk, a 43-year-old veteran of 15 NFL seasons. Long snapper Jeremy Cain was signed to a three-year deal before the lockout began.
Kick returner Deji Karim and punt returner Scotty McGee are both healthier after injury-plagued rookie seasons (McGee was on injured reserve last year).
FINAL ANALYSIS
The Jaguars defense will be better than it was last year, but Jacksonville is still facing a very tough schedule that includes the Jets, Steelers, Ravens and Saints. The Colts are the gold standard in the AFC South, and the Texans should be much better than last year, so the division will still be tough. The Jags could be better in 2011 yet still finish in third place and miss the playoffs.

New NFL Case Says Players Used Helmets as Weapons
PHILADELPHIA (CN) - Retired NFL players say the league "turned a blind eye" for the last four decades as coaches encouraged them to use helmets as on-field weapons, a practice geared toward "keeping its fan base excited and interested in the violence of this sport."
In addition to Patriots Jersey Womens negligently condoning the use of the helmet as an "offensive weapon" to "block, tackle, butt, spear, ram and/or injure opposing players by hitting with their helmeted heads," the National Football League conspired to conceal clear evidence that their passive Kids New England Patriots Jerseys approach to helmet use and concussions resulted in severe long-term damage to its gridiron gladiators, according to the federal class action filed Wednesday.
The NFL conspired with independent contractors and "team members" to "continuously discount and reject the causal connection between multiple concussions suffered while playing in the NFL, a non-scientific return-to-play policy for players suffering concussions and the chronic long term effects of these injuries," the retired players claim.
Seven former players are named in the lawsuit, saying they have "or will in the future" suffer a concussion-related brain injury or illness. They want the league to bankroll a medical-monitoring regime for former and current players who have suffered an on-field concussion that may cause them to develop a brain illness such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia or encephalopathy.
Despite being the paramount football league on the planet, the NFL has lagged far behind lower-level leagues in implanting concussion-related safety measures, the suit says.
The NFL knew in the 1970s that the NCAA and National High School Football Federations (NHSFF) had adopted a policy requiring all helmets to comply with a standard Patriots Jersey Youth created by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment.
"The NFL did not make or adopt a similar policy at that time," according to he 20-page complaint.

The NFL in 1979 promulgated a rule penalizing players "found to Patriots Jersey have used their helmets to butt, spear or ram an opponent with the crown or top of the helmet," but the rule "fell far short of the important safety and injury prevention action that should have been taken" and "ignored the more prevalent practices in the NFL that was [sic] directly causing a substantial and high rate of concussions amongst NFL players," according to the suit.
During the 1970s, '80s and '90s, "players in the NFL were being coached, trained and motivated to use all portions of their helmets to block, tackle, butt, spear, ram and/or injure opposing players by hitting with their helmeted heads," according to the suit.
Though the NFL knew that such tactics increased the concussion rate for players, the tactics weren't "significantly condemned" by the league, the suit states.

What's worse, the retired players and their wives say, is that the league actively concealed the causative connection between on-field concussions and brain injury.
In September 2009, the NFL disputed the results of its own study, which found that over 6 percent of retired players aged 50 and above experienced memory-related illnesses compared to 1.2 percent for comparably aged American men, according to the suit.
"The defendant's agents disputed these findings and continued the mantra in the press that there is no evidence connecting concussions, concussion like symptoms, NFL football and long-term brain illness or injury," according to the suit.
But the NFL didn't merely fail to prevent on-field concussions. It "failed to take reasonable steps to develop appropriate and necessary guidelines to recognize, diagnose and treat players with concussions," and it failed to develop a satisfactory "return-to-play" policy that would keep concussed players off the field until they could safely return, the suit says.
NFL Vice President Brian McCarthy said the league had not seen the complaint, "but would vigorously contest any claims of this kind."
This is the latest in a Men New England Patriots Jerseys string of lawsuits springing from the NFL's decades-long, and now widely discredited, attempts to brush off concerns about long-term traumatic brain injury from repeated concussions.

Coach Mike Shanahan enters the second year of his building project with a foundation in place but some significant lingering questions. Overshadowing the team’s two-win improvement in 2010 is the disastrous trade for quarterback Donovan McNabb. The ugly, prolonged divorce from McNabb leaves the Redskins with no proven option at the most important position on the field. Meanwhile, the offensive line remains a major weakness, and there’s a lack of proven skill-position players.
The defense in 2010 suffered in transitioning to a 3-4. The question now is whether it will improve after a year of learning and time to acquire personnel that fits the scheme.
Players insist that Shanahan’s structured, disciplined approach has changed the team’s losing, disorderly culture. However, fans, and possibly owner Daniel Snyder, will get antsy if there isn’t another step forward in the standings.
OFFENSE
No head-to-head race captivates the nation’s capital like a Redskins’ quarterback controversy. The latest quarterback competition, which features Rex Grossman against John Beck, isn’t exactly a matchup of heavyweights, but anything would excite the masses. Grossman is a known quantity with 34 starts in his eight seasons. His decision-making is sometimes baffling (40 career INTs compared to 40 TDs), but he also has a firm grasp of coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Beck, on the other hand, is a wild card. They were drafted to contribute and that’s exactly what the Titans rookie class did in their first Patriots Jersey Youth preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.

After the following Vikings series ended in a three and out, it was rookie running back Jamie Harper’s time to shine. Harper who rushed 8 times for 27 yards capped 5 play 1:32 drive with a two yard touchdown run that put the Titans on top 14-0 at the intermission.
Zach Clayton got into the mix with a quarterback sack in the second half that capped off an impressive night for this rookie class.
Head Coach Mike Munchak was very complimentary of his young player.
“Excited about the rookies,” said Munchak. “I think we have been bragging on them the past two weeks saying how well they have been doing for not having an offseason with us and only being with us 15 days.
Munchak singled out the play of Locker saying, “Jake (Locker) came in and made some plays. The one he threw (on) the touchdown, I think he actually fumbled the snap, but goes and makes the play.
“The D-lineman, which we have been bragging on, made some plays,” said Munchak. “Karl Klug started, made some plays. (Zach) Clayton, Jurrell Casey, I mean all of them Womens New England Patriots Jerseys contributed in some way.
Muncahk continued that, “It’s exciting to see those guys do well in there first time out.”

NFL Preseason QB Controversies: Chad Henne vs. Matt Moore
Beleaguered quarterback Chad Henne needs Official Steelers Jersey to do some real soul-searching. He needs to find out if he really has it in himself to be a starting quarterback in the National Football League. This is the big time and he needs to buckle down, grab the opportunity he has been handed and take responsibility for it. Or else he will find himself out of a job this season, not next.
Henne’s offseason has been marred with initial trade talks between the Fins and the Broncos, trying to send Kyle Orton to Miami for a high-round draft pick. After the talks disintegrated, Dolfans chanted “We Want Orton” in a practice at Sun Life Authentic Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys Stadium that was open to the public.

Matt Moore is the next in line. Moore is not a proven quarterback in the NFL. He doesn’t have a strong arm and has little to show for his time thus far in the NFL. Last season with Cheap Ravens Jersey the Carolina Panthers, Moore was awarded the starting job with the departure of Jake Delhomme, but struggled New Orleans Saints Jersey Authentic mightily in the starting role.

History aside, Moore has turned some heads in his first preseason game in Miami. In his Dolphins debut, Moore completed 11 of 18 passes for 123 yards, scored two touchdowns and threw a single interception. His most impressive play of the game was the 28-yard touchdown pass to Roberto Wallace with thirteen seconds left in the first half.
If Moore can consistently impress the coaching staff for the remainder of the preseason he could potentially steal away the starting role from Henne.
Pat Devlin was unimpressive in his debut performance for the Dolphins. He is in a battle with Kevin O’Connell for the third string quarterback slot and will not factor into the starting position at all.
The key to landing the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback spot will be consistency. Henne, the returning starter, has the leg up, with Moore hot on his heels. If he wants to remain the Dolphins starter he must prove to the coaching staff that he deserves it ahead of Moore.
Who starts in 2011? Chad Henne has it for now. A bad start to the season could find him riding the tar in the near future. However, keep a close eye on Matt Moore in the remaining three preseason games.

2011 NFL Preseason Recap: Rams 33 - Colts 10
Last night, the Rams pretty thoroughly kicked the snot out of the Colts. Part of the reason this happened is the Colts simply don't care about preseason whereas the Rams, who didn't have many people at the dome last night, are trying to re-engage their fanbase by proving to them that the 2011 Rams team is good. Thus, Rams quarterback Sam Bradford and the No. 1 offense played well into quarter two while the Colts had their third stringers out there midway through the first quarter.
The other reason this game was a blowout was the horrendous play of the quarterbacks, in particular Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky. I paid extra special attention to both men during the game, and now having rewatched it twice (yes, I hate myself THAT much) it's pretty obvious that Painter has not progressed much from last year.
I also followed Drake Nevis and Kevin Thomas. Both had strong games.
Two other players jumped out at me, and not for good reasons. Jerry Hughes and Mike Pollak very much needed to play well in a game like this in order to shut up their more vocal critics (like me, for instance). NFL Football Saints Jerseys In fact, I came into this game specifically choosing not to focus on them. However, their play last night was so atrocious that it was hard NOT to notice them, Hughes especially. I tweeted last night that all the folks crowing about Hughes looking good in camp needed to temper that excitement. We need to see Hughes look good in a game. Any game. Last night, he was given a golden chance to showcase his growth, and he flopped big time.
And in case you still care about this, Hughes went toe-to-toe with Rodger Saffold last night. Saffold was the player the Colts passed over to take Hughes. Bill Polian himself said the Colts scouting department graded Saffold as a right tackle. Well, Saffold has played LT for much of his early career, and played it well. Last night, Saffold dominated Hughes. He never let him within reach of his Authentic Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys QB.
Gonna say the Polians and their scouting department really screwed up on that evaluation.
After the jump, we breakdown the game.
Curtis Painter on the first series was dreadful. He missed badly on a routine swing pass in the left flat for Joseph Addai on the first play. On third down, he BADLY overthrew Austin Collie, who had a step on his defender, and the NFL Reebok Saints Jerseys ball landed in the hands of Quintin Mikell.Just a terrible throw. No way to disguise that.
Donald Brown looked good last night. A couple of very solid runs. He hit the holes Baltimore Ravens Jersey Outlet without hesitation, and utilized his speed to get into the secondary.
Mike Pollak started at guard, but was moved to center after the first series. Pollak was equally dreadful there as he is at guard. On a Donald Brown run during the second offensive series, NT Fred Robbins pushed Pollak three yards back into the backfield. Brown, who was running right, had to cutback left and gained 5 yards out of the play. However, the play was clearly going right, and because Pollak was utterly dominated, Brown had to make something out of nothing.
In the third offensive series, the first play was a run right and, once again, Pollak got overpowered. He's two yards back with Robbins while the Colts RB (can't tell who) is just getting back to the LOS.
Orlovsky came in after just two series by Painter. On the night, the former Texans and Lions QB threw two INTs. However, the first Orlovsky INT was all on WR Chris Brooks. Brooks was the slot receiver on a hot read. Orlovsky put a fast ball right into his hands. In the big leagues, you must make that catch. Brooks didn't. It bounced off his hands and into a Rams defender's. Chris Brooks will get cut for that. NFL WRs must make that grab. No excuses.
As previously stated, Jerry Hughes started at LE last night in place of Dwight Freeney. Freeney isn't hurt. The Cheap Ravens Jersey Colts just know that without Freeney, they have no pass rush. Thus, keeping him out of 'meaningless' games is a priority. Hughes was dominated all night. On 3rd and 5 inside 20 after Orlovsky's first pick, Hughes tried to do a spin move on Saffold. Hughes never touched Sam Bradford's jersey all night. If didn't matter if Saffold was on him, or Joe Blow Backup.
Compare Hughes to Rams first rounder from 2011, DE Robert Quinn. On third-and-12 for Colts during Orlovsky's second series, Quinn bull-rushed his way to Orlovsky, forcing him to throw early. Quinn showed power and speed in that one rush, and almost got a sack. In fact, he was double-teamed on the play, by both Linkenbach and Jacques McClendon, and STILL managed to pressure Orlovsky. Javarris James got a great stick on the punt return in the first quarter. He blow up the returner just has he fielded the punt. Nice job. Joe Lefeged was also there to clean up the play.
Drake Nevis impressed me last night. On the Rams fourth series, he looked very good. On the first play, he broke through two blockers and pressured Bradford into an incompletion. In fact, he actually got to Bradford and dragged him down, all while the tackle was holding him (no flag). Very impressive pass rush there from the UT position.
The Rams fourth series pitted their first team offense v. Indy's second and third string defense. Rams converted several third downs to, eventually, score a TD. New Orleans Saints Jersey Authentic 3rd-and-5, converted. 3rd-and-7, converted. Bradford picked on Brandon King, No. 37, a lot on third down. They ran the same exact play both times to Lance Hendricks the TE. Converted 4th-and-1 later in drive as well.
Nevis was very good getting down the line and cleaning up running plays last night. On 1st-and-10, with :20 left in first quarter, the ran right at Jerry Hughes and gained 4 yards. Hughes was blocked out of play by Saffold. Nevis came down the line and cleaned up RB.
At the beginning of second quarter, Colts had to use a TO because they had the wrong defense on the field. That's pretty inexcusable. After the break, how can the coaches get the wrong personal on the field? They had Philip Wheeler lined up against a slot receiver. It would have been a TD, easy. Colts burn TO and get nickel package on field. Bad coaching there.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Colts had guys like Daniel Bedford and Courtney Brown in the game. The Rams had their starting offense still on the field. The Colts simply don't care.
Orlovsky, in second quarter, looked good. Stood tall in pocket. Completed nice out throw to TE Mike McNiel for a seven yard gain. On the third down (3rd-and-1) Orlovsky was flushed right because rookie Anthony Castonzo could not sustain his block. Don't ask me why the Colts are throwing on 3rd-and-1 when they've spent all this money and draft picks on getting Castonzo, Ben Ijalana, and Delone Carter (who was the back at that time).
On Colts second quarter series with 4:04 left, Castonzo missed an assignment and let Robert Quinn have a free shot at Evans. Stopped Evans short of LOS for negative gain. On third and 8, Orlovsky looked left, went back right and threw it to the sidelines. Taj Smith ran a bad route, and missed the catch. Orlovsky visibly annoyed with Smith after that.
Impressive running last night by Chad Spann. His kick returns were terrible (fumbled two of them, but didn't lose either one), but a couple of times as a RB he made something out of nothing, especially in third quarter. The 41-yard TD from Orlovsky to Taj Smith was a result of a play action fake. The Rams LBers bit on the fake because Spann was killing them. Result, easy TD. Good throw by Orlovsky.
Sometime Official Steelers Jersey late in the second quarter or early in the third, Mike Pollak sat and Kyle DeVan lined up at center. He looked very good playing the part. He held his blocks well in pass protection. On the 41-yarder, he cleaned up two blocks and Orlovsky wasn't touched.
The third quarter Orlovsky pick was simply a bad throw. Just a poor decision and the ball wasn't well placed. It wasn't nearly as bad as the Painter pick, but up until then Orlovsky had outplayed Painter.
Overall, the QBs were awful, Nevis was strong, and I liked the coverage of Kevin Thomas in the second half. Thomas did some nice things out there. A couple of times, he gave too much cushion for a a guy who is supposed to be a man coverage specialist, but overall not bad.
And despite some expected rookie mistakes, I liked what I saw out of Castonzo. He's clearly more talented and offers more at the LT spot than Jeff Linkenbach. I didn't focus on Ijalana much.
After the game, a noticeably subdued Jim Caldwell was not his usual 'Hey guys, it's not all that bad' self.

Foxboro, MA (Sports Network) - Rookie Stevan Ridley ran for a pair of touchdowns and caught a Ryan Mallett pass for another score, and the New England Patriots began the preseason with a 47-12 triumph over the new-look Jacksonville Jaguars. Five months after a lockout began, it was back to game action, Official Ben Roethlisberger Jersey but not for Tom Brady. The Patriots starting quarterback dressed for the game, but instead yielded to Brian Hoyer. The second-string QB completed 15-of-21 passes for 171 yards, including an 11-yard score to Taylor Price in the second quarter. Also not taking the field for the Patriots were their two main offseason additions in wide receiver Chad Ochocinco and Albert Haynesworth. Mallett, a third-round pick this year out of Arkansas, went 12- of-19 for 164 yards. Rookie Blaine Gabbert, a 10th overall pick out of Missouri, started for the Jaguars and completed 9-of-16 passes for 85 yards. He led the Jags to three first-half scoring drives, all resulting in field goals.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Michael Vick capped his only drive with a touchdown pass to Brent Celek, and the Philadelphia Eagles kept the Baltimore Ravens out of the end zone en route to a 13-6 victory in the preseason opener for both teams. Vick connected Official Maurkice Pouncey Jersey on 4-of-6 passes for 74 yards in limited action for the Eagles, who lost to the Packers in the NFC Wild Card round last year but added several big-name free agents in a lockout-affected offseason. Joe Flacco played two series for the Ravens and finished with 60 yards on 3- of-6 throws, while rookie Tyrod Taylor was intercepted twice and threw incomplete on 4th-and-goal in the final minute.

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Thomas Clayton's 25-yard touchdown run with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter capped a comeback and sent Seattle past San Diego, 24-17, in the preseason opener for both clubs at Qualcomm Stadium. Charlie Whitehurst saw the majority of the snaps, going 14- of-20 for 115 yards for the Seahawks, who finished 7-9 a year ago and became the first team in NFL history to win their division with a losing record. Tarvaris Jackson, pegged as the successor to the departed Matt Hasselbeck, completed three of five attempts for 13 yards but was sacked twice. Leon Washington added a rushing score. while Anthony McCoy hauled in a six- yard TD pass in the final stanza. Philip Rivers took a seat after connecting on 5-of-6 passes for 87 yards and a first-quarter touchdown to Mike Tolbert for the Chargers, who went 9-7 a year ago but finished out of postseason contention.

Oakland, CA Official Lawrence Timmons Jersey (Sports Network) - Kevin Kolb played just two series for the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night, unofficially beginning a new era for a team in desperate need for stable No. 1 quarterback but only willing to dip its toes in the water for a preseason opener. Tipsheet: Patriots welcome Gabbert to the NFL
Blaine Gabbert got an education Thursday night, courtesy of Bill Belichick and his well-oiled Patriots.
The former Mizzou quarterback started for the Jaguars Thursday night in New England, where the Patriots administered a thorough 47-12 beating. With veteran Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard injured, Gabbert dove right into the fire against several New England starters.
He played the entire first half. He wasn’t great, but he wasn’t terrible either. Gabbert looked tentative at times while reading the Patriots defense, but he didn’t fold up.
He completed 9-of-16 passes for 85 yards and no interceptions. Clifton Brown of The Sporting News offered this assessment: “Gabbert made a few nice throws, but Official LaMarr Woodley Jersey he was also sacked three times and showed a tendency to hold the football too long.”
Gabbert’s assessment: “I'd like to come away with more touchdowns. We had a lot of opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. Even in the midst of the supposed bad business climate with the “unworkable NBA business model” that owners have complained about, another team changed hands over the weekend.
California businessman Alex Meruelo became the fourth new owner to buy an NBA franchise since January after reaching a deal to buy the Atlanta Hawks from the previous ownership group known as Atlanta Spirit. NBA.com’s David Aldridge reports that he expects no problem when the sale is considered by the league’s Board of Governors.
Cost of Shannon Brown Black Throwback Jersey the deal is estimated at $300 million and the Spirit group at least initially will retain 20 to 25 percent of the team. Meruelo wants to keep the franchise in Atlanta and plans to move to the area soon to help run the team.

“I want to earn the respect and loyalty of the Atlanta community,” Meruelo told Atlanta reporters Monday at his introductory press conference.

NBA assistant coach sues Vegas casino over brawl
The NBA's Charles Oakley claims his celebrity status has nothing to do with him not getting arrested after a poolside brawl at a Strip casino last year.
Oakley is suing the Aria and its security guards because he claims the guards beat him after he tried to enter a VIP Elgin Baylor Blue Jersey pool area.
The MGM Resorts International casino and several of its employees countersued Oakley last month, saying he started the tussle but avoided criminal charges because he's famous.

Andrew Bynum -- For what it's worth, Laker forward Ron Artest offered me this scouting report on Bynum when I asked him earlier this summer who on the Lakers would make good football players: "He can run. He's tall. You can just throw it up. Simple: touchdown." There's only one problem. It's guaranteed Bynum would suffer multiple knee injuries before it ever got to that point.
Ron Artest -- He often said last season that he wanted to play in the NFL when he retires from basketball. At this point many Laker fans hope that happens as soon as next season, Authentic Derek Fisher Purple Jersey but it's unlikely Ron Ron would walk away from his remaining three-year, $21-million contract. Allow him to line up in the slot. Odom would have to bulk up a bit, but he'd have the chops to at least appear respectable.
Steve Blake -- It's a giant leap to equate how he performed in a pickup sandball game to how he'd fare in Dennis Rodman Yellow Jersey actual helmet and pads in an NFL game. So even if Blake shows he has good instincts with his passing and scrambling abilities, it's presumptuous to think that would transfer into an actual game.

Fulfilling that job description still requires a good amount of conditioning so this shouldn't provide Caracter an excuse to neglect his off-season training.

'NBA 2K12' Goes Old-School With 'NBA's Greatest' Mode

NBA union head not confident of 2011-12 season
Given the lack of progress in labor negotiations between the NBA and its players and their significant financial gap, union executive director Billy Hunter is not confident of a 2011-12 season.

When word came that the 89-year-old Patterson had died Wednesday night at his home in Sugar Land, Tex., it was that image of smiling defiance that danced in my memory.
There was virtually nothing you could tell Patterson that he couldn't do and almost nothing that he wouldn't tell you he could. Patterson brought a young prospect named Moses Malone to Houston in 1976, watched him win two MVP awards and lead the team to the Finals in 1981. George Story – long time City of San Diego employee and U-T reporter – had his Ocean Beach memorial bench stolen also
There has been much to do about the memorial benches stolen off the cliffs in Ocean Beach. And there should be – as their theft during broad daylight earlier this month is outrageous. The media has been all over the story of Swingman Kobe Bryant Blue Jersey the missing memorial bench that the Cappellucci’s had for their son who passed away from cancer two years ago.

There was a second memorial bench stolen at the same time, and it belonged to the family of George Story. Both benches were reportedly taken sometime between 7 and 8 a.m. on July 8th, by a large crane and placed on a flatbed truck, as witnesses have said. One person even took a photo of the truck. The City has denied taking the benches, and the police are investigating.
I spoke to George Story’s son, John – who lives in OB – , earlier today. And he’s upset. John told me:
“Somebody removed those benches. Legal recourse needs to be used against the culprit. It pisses me off! We paid for that bench. Went through the proper channels – this was not a vigilante type action – …” his voice trailed off.
John Story is angry, yet it is a quiet anger, as he is not a guy who gets disturbed easily. But yet there it was. The bench he and his family had installed ten years ago for their dad was simply gone. Stolen.

John remembers his dad as an avid sports fan. “Because of my dad, I witnessed all kinds of major sports moments in San Diego’s history.”
John has lived in Ocean Beach since the late 19802s. Born in San Diego, John and the Story family lived in Bay Ho at first. When John ended up here, he became active in the OB Greens who used to meet, he remembers, at the Green Store on Voltaire Street. Over the years, he’s been active once in awhile in grassroots issues in OB. Currently working at Comic-Con, John’s a union trade-show installer, installing for 15 years as a member of the International Painters and Allied Trades Union.

On her website, Fonda writes :
The network said they got a lot of calls yesterday criticizing me for my opposition to the Vietnam War and threatening to boycott the show if I was allowed to appear.
