Jordan Officer (acoustic guitar)
Jody Golick (tenor saxophone)
John McColgan (drums)

Notes: Playing traditional blues in a traditional manner without sounding academic is a tricky act. Michael Jerome Browne pulls it off beautifully. Browne is a master of fingerpicked guitar, slide guitar and fretless banjo, with a raspy voice that would sound right at home on some Alan Lomax field recordings if you added some crackles and pops to "age" the sound. The thing is, Browne isn't playing this stuff just to keep tradition alive. This is no homage. This is no pastiche. He is playing it because he feels it. He was just born in the wrong era. On most tracks, he plays unaccompanied, but on a few, he has some light accompaniment, and the album ends on a jazzier note, complete with some tasteful saxophone, playing well off of Browne's Lonnie Johnson-style flatpicking. Mostly, though, Browne sticks to country blues. He isn't imitating anyone in particular most of the time. You can't listen to 12-string slide without thinking of Leadbelly, but even then, he sounds nothing like Leadbelly. He just sounds like the forgotten, long-lost blues master whose recordings miraculously resurfaced and were painstakingly restored.
There aren't many people who can pull this off, and Bob Brozman is no longer with us. Catfish Keith. Steve James. If these are the kinds of modern blues musicians you like, Michael Jerome Browne is for you too. And if you long for more blues banjo, check out Otis Taylor's "Recapturing the Banjo."

Big Jim Adam, Rock Island Line (Fossyl). Acoustically grounded, but with touches of Soul. Mr. Adams best instrument is his rich baritone voice, which lends these tracks an attention-grabbing authority. The songs are a mix of originals and mostly familiar covers. My favorite of the originals is the upbeat Feel Good Day (7).
There Goes the Blues (13) is my favorite cover, in part because this is a great Texas Johnny Brown song that rarely (if ever) has been recorded by anyone else. (Nick Delay – WKVR-fm)

Kat Danser’s music navigates a paddle steamer from the muddy banks of the Mississippi Delta downriver toward a big ol’ full moon over New Orleans. Dubbed ‘Queen of the Swamp Blues’, this Edmonton-based guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist channels the spirit of pioneers of roots, blues and spiritual music.

Her fourth album, Baptized By The Mud, is a collaboration between Danser and Juno-award winning producer Steve Dawson. The recording aurally addresses the dichotomy of ‘church-blues’: blues music as devilish and church music as angelic. This sub-genre demonstrates that human truth and the divine are one in the same – “one is preached from behind the pulpit and the other from behind the plow”.

Notes:In the 1960s when the folk revival began to recognize country blues as an important art form, Arhoolie was there to capture it all on tape. It perhaps seems odd in retrospect that a number of scholars and collectors feared that the older forms of the blues had vanished from the landscape during the 1950s. Arhoolie's recordings of Fred McDowell, Lightnin' Hopkins, and other players gave ample evidence that prewar blues were alive and doing quite well, thank you. Texas Country Blues collects a number of tracks recorded by Mance Lipscomb in the late '60s and early '70s. Lipscomb may be first and foremost a blues player, but unlike Hopkins or McDowell, he broadened his repertoire to include ragtime and folk. "Rag in F" is a fun little ditty that brings to mind the bouncy piano work of Scott Joplin, while "Corrine, Corrina" and "Wonder Where My Easy Rider Gone" conjure up the ghost of Leadbelly. Whatever style he's working in, however, Lipscomb delivers each song with focus and feeling. There's the delightful "Mama, Let Me Lay It on You," and there are sharp, electric versions of "Blues in the Bottle" and "Angel Child." With it's generous running time and fine selections, Texas Country Blues will serve as a superior introduction to an eclectic blues artist.

Notes: If the Delta country blues has a convenient source point, it would probably be Charley Patton, its first great star. His hoarse, impassioned singing style, fluid guitar playing, and unrelenting beat made him the original king of the Delta blues. Much more than your average itinerant musician, Patton was an acknowledged celebrity and a seminal influence on musicians throughout the Delta. Rather than bumming his way from town to town, Patton would be called up to play at plantation dances, juke joints, and the like. He'd pack them in like sardines everywhere he went, and the emotional sway he held over his audiences caused him to be tossed off of more than one plantation by the ownership, simply because workers would leave crops unattended to listen to him play any time he picked up a guitar. He epitomized the image of a '20s "sport" blues singer: rakish, raffish, easy to provoke, capable of downing massive quantities of food and liquor, a woman on each arm, with a flashy, expensive-looking guitar fitted with a strap and kept in a traveling case by his side, only to be opened up when there was money or good times involved. His records -- especially his first and biggest hit, "Pony Blues" -- could be heard on phonographs throughout the South. Although he was certainly not the first Delta bluesman to record, he quickly became one of the genre's most popular. By late-'20s Mississippi plantation standards, Charley Patton was a star, a genuine celebrity.
This Cd is from The first 9 Pristine Audio Blues releases, XR-remastered.

Although this CD by pianist Memphis Slim and bassist Willie Dixon is marketed as a part of Verve's Jazz in Paris reissue series, it is, of course, a blues date, with a fair amount of boogie-woogie. The two veterans, who had worked together previously, are joined by drummer Phillipe Combelle during the two 1962 sessions recorded at Les Trois Mailletz, complete with a typically out of tune piano and a fair amount of noise from the audience at times. The pianist's gruff voice dominates a fair amount of the performances, although most of the songs are Dixon's. The bassist steals the show during the opener, "Rocking and Rolling the House," with a fine solo. In fact, the only standard not written by either man is a campy miniature take of Big Bill Broonzy's "All by Myself." Blues fans will want up to pick up this live recording by two legendary musicians.

Big Jim Adam’s emotional singing and sliding swampy guitar, combined with his foot percussion skills make for a powerful performance. Jim’s unique style is a fusion of the raw blues he heard as a child being played on the front porches of his neighborhood, combined with the gospel music he sang growing up. These driving rhythms and heartfelt vocals give him his unique sound. Jim’s vocal and guitar work can be heard in the PBS special “For Love of Liberty.” Jim also won the 2012 Telluride Acoustic Blues Solo Competition. “Contest winner Jim Adam gave us some of the best and most authentic blues I have heard in a while. This man definitely deserved winning the Acoustic Blues competition.

“Besides being one of the most talented blues guitarists living today Stefan Grossman is also lucky. His luck is combined with a self-determined will to understand, master, and then teach and describe to others, the music that he has learnt first hand from such legendary bluesmen as Skip James, Son House, Fred McDowell, Mississippi John Hurt, Bukka White, Mance Lipscomb and Rev. Gary Davis. His luck helped him to be in the right place at the right time.

But Stefan is unique in another way. Most authors of guitar instruction books can write but are rarely excellent musicians and performers in their own right. Stefan is beyond doubt one of the finest acoustic guitar players performing and recording today. His tours take him throughout Europe, Australia, Japan, South America and the United States. His concerts span a wide spectrum of music. His career has developed in two distinct directions at the same time. Sometimes these roads cross but always they seem to complement each other. What he discovers as a musician he is open to demonstrate and explain as a teacher.

The tunes on this CD were recorded in 1977 in London, England and first appeared on two Kicking Mule albums. This is the music that Stefan loves the most: the Country Blues. It was his first love and is still the music that he is most enthused about. Stefan concentrates on the guitar playing along with his close comrade in arms, Sam Mitchell. The singing is left to several friends: Jo Ann Kelly and Mike Cooper.

I think the combination of all these elements has produced an album of country blues unsurpassed.

Notes: A year and a half ago I wrote a post on Brian Kramer and his live album from Club Stampen. This time, though, he’s all alone. It’s just about Brian, his acoustic guitar(s) and you. As close and intimate as it gets.
He sneaks away into the Mississippi delta, he takes a tour to Amsterdam, he let the blues take a stroll along childhood lanes and relationships and even have a look at an old pocket watch. It’s naked and straight on and no excessive outbreaks. And just like with the other album, I feel a nice mellow warmth, and especially in the more melodic storytelling songs, I get a feeling of John Hiatt, who also have a special way of spreading warmth around him. ~ Meadow Music

Personnel:
Sylvester Cotton (vocals, guitar)
Andrew Dunham (vocals, guitar)
James Taylor (vocals).

Blues Sensation might be a bit of a stretch, but there's no denying this is a great set of gritty blues from late-'40s Detroit. Both Sylvester Cotton and Andrew Dunham were contemporaries of John Lee Hooker (one of the Cotton sides was actually credited to Hooker when issued), and both performed solo with their guitar. The majority of sides here belong to Cotton, who plays a steel-bodied guitar with a very country chordal playing style with quick fills as opposed to more delicate fingerpickers like Fred McDowell or Skip James. Much of Cotton's output sounds very spontaneous, as though he was making up the songs on the spot like Bukka White did. Cotton's subject matter was sometimes as indelicate as his guitar playing with titles like "Big Chested Mama Blues" and "Sak-Relation Blues," and in "Watered Down Blues" he sings about hitting his baby in the head with a hammer. Five tracks from Dunham finish out the set. The recording quality is a bit rougher here, but still very listenable. Dunham starts with a tune called "Rocky Mountain" that's a raw, manic stomper with bashed-out chords. The next track, "Little Bitty Woman," shows considerably more guitar skill, to the point that it really stands out among the Dunham tracks. This collection should please any fan of raw, early urban blues. ~ Sean Westergaard

Subtitled - Detroit Downhome Recordings 1948-49. The first time on CD for these incredibly rare solo blues performances from the early 1940s from the vaults of Detroit's Sensation Records. Features 19 tracks by Sylvester Cotton along with 6 more by Andrew Dunham.25 tracks, many of which have never been released at all prior to this compilation. Raw-to-the-core downhome blues, straight from the streets of 1940s Detroit.

Billy Flynn’s Easy Baby release, Chicago Blues Mandolin, pays tribute to the great mandolin practitioners Johnny Young and Yank Rachel. In his usual creative style, Flynn delves deep into the mandolin tradition, presenting 11 original compositions compiling an impressive selection of boogie, slow blues, and country blues styles. An innovative, contemporary return to the charm of mandolin blues--an almost faded genre that remains vibrant and unique in the hands of this loving master.

Bio from blues.org.au: Salty Dog play a myriad of blues and roots styles, from the urban blues of Chicago to the blues and cajun of the Delta and across to the bluegrass of Kentucky. They traverse the timeline from the 1920's to the 1980's and pay deep respect to the legends such as Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Sleepy John Estes, John Hurt, Son House, Doc Watson and many more. They also throw a few of their own compositions into the mix to good effect.
The band varies in size depending upon the needs of their gigs, however the core of the band has remained Steve Plater and Marion Turner. Steve is widely recognised as one of the finest blues guitarists in the country, though he is also a multi-instrumentalist and singer of note. Steve's well-known passion for all forms of blues music shows through loud and clear. Marion is a dynamic stage performer who combines harmonica with a rich and powerful voice, and is a talented multi-instrumentalist in her own right.
The year 2000 was a watershed year for Salty Dog, with Steve winning the Vic/Tas Blues Awards Male Artist of the Year and Marion winning the corresponding Female Artist of the Year for the second year running. Steve's musicianship combined with Marion's energetic and heartfelt vocals also took Salty Dog to the Vic/Tas 2000 Band of the Year award. Since then, Salty Dog have progressed as a duo, growing their reputation as a hard-working and energetic band through almost non-stop touringi across Victoria and interstate. Reward for their efforts came in 2002 at the National Blues Awards when Salty Dog took out the Band of the Year award.

Notes: Maria Muldaur's trilogy of old-timey blues and jazz releases for the Stony Plain imprint (she simultaneously records more contemporary music for the Telarc label) concludes with this appropriately titled set. Much is made in the liner notes of the veteran jazz/blues/pop/gospel singer being mentored in her early jugband years by no less of an icon than Victoria Spivey, so it seems Muldaur feels this tribute to the style and material of Spivey and other "classic blues queens" of the '20s and '30s is a sort of closure. It is also a history lesson, with detailed booklet information, some of it written by Muldaur, providing fascinating capsule biographies of the women whose music is covered here. Muldaur sure has the pipes and integrity for this approach, alternatively playful, sexy and downtrodden, and these dozen tracks find her inspired both by the strong, occasionally humorous material and the superb backing musicians in James Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band. There is no attempt to modernize these classic vaudeville and Dixieland era tunes; rather the intent is to be true to the original style with acoustic backing played in, and with, the spirit that made them so popular in their day. Muldaur invigorates the incessant double entendres that surely caused lecherous grins when listeners heard Bessie Smith's "Empty Bed Blues" or Spivey's "One Hour Mama" for the first time. Bonnie Raitt swings by for a cameo on Sippie Wallace's "Separation Blues," graciously not stealing the spotlight, but using her presence to pay tribute to one of her own inspirations. Other blues women covered here are Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey and Alberta Hunter. Muldaur's versions aren't simply covers, they reinvigorate the material, keeping the focus on the lyrics while Dapogny's group swings along. It's a fun, frisky and enlightening ride from a vocalist who has always promoted this music mixed in with her other styles, and an album that leaves the listener anticipating a follow-up.

Brother John Sellers - Sings Blues And Folk Songs

Bitrate: 320K/s

Year: 1954/2006

A bit tame even by the standards of the folk revival, this showcased Sellers as a smooth and accomplished presenter of folk, blues, and a bit of jazz. The singer mixed original compositions with standards like "John Henry," "Down By the Riverside," and "Nobody Knows the Trouble I Have Seen" on a set that seemed conscientiously programmed to demonstrate his versatility. The blues and folk numbers were graced by harmonica from Sonny Terry; the less successful jazzy efforts had accompaniment from a combo featuring the original Count Basie rhythm section.

Broke & Hungry Records, the label responsible for some of the most harrowing country blues in recent memory, releases its most unusual project to date - a record shrouded in such mystery that even the name of the artist who recorded it is a secret.

"The World Must Never Know" represents the debut recordings of a 78-year-old Delta bluesman dubbed the Mississippi Marvel. Like countless bluesmen before him, he has lived a life steeped in two separate and opposing traditions: The reckless abandon of a juke joint on Saturday night, and the healing redemption of church on Sunday. And like many of those earlier bluesmen, this artist has never reconciled these two warring factions of his identity. Although he still occasionally turns up at his neighborhood juke, the artist today devotes more attention to his local church community. And like many conservative black churches in the South, his still regards blues music as something shameful, even sinful. Fearing the rejection of this community, the artist steadfastly refuses to release any music under his own name. And so, the Legend of the Mississippi Marvel is born.

Featuring 10 tracks recorded at a secret session in a Delta juke in 2006, the CD represents country blues at its raw, primal best. Although many of the songs are standards, the performances are anything but. The

Mississippi Marvel's voice is an instrument of incomparable intensity, full of power and fury. His rich vibrato recalls some of the region's most legendary singers. His guitar playing is all jagged lines and raw fury.

Notes: Blues Revue says “…one of the best acoustic blues albums of the year comes from three white boys from Maryland.” Serious blues lovers and recent converts alike rave to us about the Trio’s first CD, Preachin’ the Blues. Eight years in the making, this follow-up was worth the wait. Ben Andrew’s voice has gained that seared-by-life bluesiness; Mark Wenner’s harmonica cuts even deeper; and Jeff Sarli’s bass adds layers of subtlety to his knock-you-down drive. The first CD has become a legend among lovers of good sound in blues. A tough act to follow, the richer vocal detail, stronger dynamics and cleaner overtones of this recording are startling. All that adds extra excitement and authenticity to this tasty collection of Chicago, Delta and Texas acoustic blues.

Janis Joplin may have gotten all of the fame and glory, but she was far from the only white female blues shouter to emerge from the San Francisco music scene of the mid-'60s; The Best of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth is proof positive of that, providing an excellent introduction to one of the more sadly overlooked talents of her time and place. Despite any number of passing similarities to Joplin, Nelson sings with greater finesse; her style is more adaptable as well, capable of fitting comfortably into R&B, psychedelia, and pop ballads, all the while remaining grounded in classic roots music traditions. Highlighted by her perennial "Down So Low" -- subsequently recorded by everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Etta James -- this 17-track compilation also spotlights performances spanning from a wrenching cover of Little Willie John's "Need Your Love So Bad" to contemporary material like Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" and John Hiatt's "Thinking of You," offering a comprehensive overview of her earliest and most enduring work.

“Lightning Hopkins is well-known to fans of country blues, but this casual recording places his music in an entirely more interesting context. Rather than presenting Hopkins as an 'artist,' above and apart from his audience, this disc affords us the chance to hear Lightning and his brothers as equals; an unrehearsed family get together which happened to include some three-way music making. Mostly recorded in 1964, when these men were all 60-ish, some cuts are understandably a bit rough. But it also reminds us of a time when music-making was a social activity, a means of amusement as well as entertainment, a chance to show off a little, a way to tell some tall tales, a way to have fun. The directness of many of these songs indicates that they are improvised (`See About My Brother John Henry,' 'I Got a Brother in Waxahachie,' `I Want to Go Fishing,' 'Home With Mama'), but that's part of the appeal. All three brothers are talented: Lightning's success and the others' obscurity also offers some lessons about luck and fate.”

A few of these selections were originally issued on ARH LP 1022, all others previously unissued.

Sam “Lightning” Hopkins - guitar and vocals; Joel Hopkins - guitar and vocals; John Henry Hopkins - guitar and vocals.

Recorded at a Hopkins family reunion on Sunday, Feb. 16, 1964, by Chris Strachwitz in Waxahachie, Texas, except # 11, 12, & 17 which were recorded in Houston, Texas March 17, 1965.

All performances previously unreleased, except track 8 & 9 which were issued on Arhoolie LP #1026 and track 10 on Arhoolie LP #1033.

Notes: Mance Lipscomb made many albums, and it was a wise decision on compiler Chris Strachwitz's part to focus on songs that were not available on previous CDs by the singer. Repertoire aside, this is very much of a piece with the "songster" style Lipscomb projects on other recordings: good-natured acoustic tunes that draw from boogie, ragtime, and folk, with a warm vocal delivery and accomplished guitar picking. Some of the songs, in fact, will be pretty familiar to most blues fans, if not always duplicated by Lipscomb on other CDs: "Meet Me in the Bottom," "Trouble in Mind," "Key to the Highway," "Rock Me Mama," and "Baby Don't You Lay It on Me" (which sounds close to the folk standard "Baby Let Me Follow You Down"). One of the tracks, incidentally, is largely a 12-minute spoken story, "Early Days Back Home." ~ Richie Unterberger Contains previously unreleased tracks. Recorded live in 1964 at The Cabale, Berkeley, California. This is part of Arhoolie's Lipscomb series. Vol.4 Of Texas Songster Series Rec.Live In 1964

Assisted by such notables as singer-guitarist Taj Mahal and guitarist Del Rey, Muldaur really excels on the vintage material and in this acoustic setting. Rather than sounding like a revivalist, her sensitive and witty vocals show a real understanding for the music and make her sound like a veteran of the era even though she is about 50 years too young! For listeners who might find it difficult to get into early blues due to the primitive recording quality, Maria Muldaur's Sweet Lovin' Ol' Soul will serve as the perfect transition. This is one of her finest recordings overall. ~ Scott Yanow

Alan and Dave have known each other for years, always playing as sidemen in support of others. A few months ago, Dave called Alan up and asked if he’d like to start a duo where each musician could choose what they’d like to perform. Since then they’ve played together a couple times a month and audiences are responding enthusiastically to the chemistry of this duo. Neither musician is afraid of a challenge, in fact they welcome the energy created in the face of new musical forays. Whether they are playing blues, ragtime, old time-standards, soul or original tunes, the music they create is exuberant, joyful and refreshingly musical.

Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, the rural Mississippi blues guitarist who burst onto the international blues scene in 2006, returns this fall with Ain’t It Lonesome, his third CD for Broke & Hungry Records and his fourth overall.

As on Holmes' previous CDs for Broke & Hungry Records, several tracks on Ain’t It Lonesome were recorded at the Blue Front Cafe, the rural juke joint that Holmes and his family have operated in Bentonia, Mississippi since 1948. Additional tracks were recorded at Bill Abel’s Big Toe Studio in Duncan, Mississippi.

Holmes conjured up several haunting acoustic originals for the CD, including “My Baby’s Gone,” “Nightmare” and “Done Got Tired of Tryin’.” The latter song provided the title of Holmes’ sophomore CD in 2007, but the song itself has remained unreleased until now. In addition to the solo acoustic tracks, Holmes offers up several searing electric performances accompanied by Clarksdale, Mississippi-based drummer Lee Williams. These titles include the driving “All Night Long” and the menacing “Tell Me, Woman.”

“It’s always a thrill to release a new Duck Holmes CD,” said Broke & Hungry Records owner Jeff Konkel. “The Bentonia blues tradition made famous by Skip James and Jack Owens, is alive and well in his hands, and I think this new CD really captures its essence.”

Holmes first made waves in the blues scene with the 2006 release of his award-winning debut CD, Back To Bentonia. He followed it up with a sophomore disc in 2007, Done Got Tired of Tryin’, which was nominated for a Blues Music Award as Acoustic Album of the Year. Last year, Holmes appeared in the Blues Music Award winning film M For Mississippi.

Notes: After several cassette-only releases this is Michael Hakanson-Stacy's first CD release. An all-acoustic recording, this album is divided between blues and folk, both of which Hakanson-Stacy seems to have a pretty solid handle on. A gifted picker, he excels on slide and resonator guitars and also receives guitar backing from singer/songwriter Brooks Williams on several selections. The more folksy numbers like "Down to My Soul" and "It Hurts Us So" resemble Sings like Hell-and Torn Again-period Peter Case; while the bluesier pieces invoke comparisons to Mississippi John Hurt and Leadbelly. Hakanson-Stacy wrote most of the songs on this album, and based on his style and delivery, it's evident that he's a student of not only traditional American guitar playing but the traditional songwriting nuances as well. This is an excellent release that would pave the way for several more such albums by Hakanson-Stacy in the coming years.

One of the premier gospel singers (and guitarists) of the early-mid 20th century, the late Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s music experienced a resurgence in popularity in the new millennium. Although more comprehensive compilations exist, this tidy collection from Acrobat is a fine introduction to Tharpe’s soulful take on gospel, blues, and even jazz. The title track is warm, inspirational ballad rendered in a sing/speak voice that hits right at the center of the heart.

Born and raised in east San Jose. Influenced by the great concerts in the Bay Area and all the music within my own family. The a.m. radio at the time brought us Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, BB King and Donny Hathaway in the same half hour. My family brought me homegrown pure folklorico music from Mexico. Dancing and playing and singing. Mix it all together and you get bands like War, Santana and Tower of Power – which are all heavy influences into how I think of rhythms and music.

I started out on the accordion. A great big one. Bigger than me. I had to pull it around in my red wagon and have someone put it on me once I sat down. That’s how big. Soon my brother Dennis was turning my head with the guitar and blues a la Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Muddy Waters and the Rolling Stones. I graduated to rhythm guitar so my brother could practice his leads. Jimmy Reed all day for me. Then I saw an old cat play harmonica in the greyhound bus stations. Went out and mowed lawns all day one Saturday till I had $2.75 to get a marine band ‘c’ harmonica from Langone’s music store on Alum Rock Ave. next to Chuck’s Hobby Shop and across the street from Peter’s Bakery. I played it to everything. Everything on the radio. Everything I heard. I played along. In key or not. I played. I got a rack and played guitar and harp and was the neighborhood jukebox getting called onto friends porches and lawns to play a song.

We worked. I worked all the time. We played on my street. In garages. At jams at the bodega in Campbell, San Jose. At parties. All over… Playing blues was without question already my direction. I loved rock and still do and more where it came from. I studied records and liner notes and went to meet and hang out.

I carried guitars and shined shoes and snuck wine in to hang out. I just wanted to hang. And I did. Like so many of my friends and cats before me did. We just loved the old dudes and the blues dudes and women and had as much fun as we could.

Tracks 1-12 and 24 recorded in Berkeley, California, April, 1966.
Tracks 13-15 recorded in Navasota, Texas, August 12, 1960.
Track 16 recorded in Navasota, June 30, 1960.
Tracks 17-23 recorded in Navasota, August 13, 1960.

Notes: Eight of these 24 tracks come from an April 1966 session and were originally released on LP (Arhoolie F 1033 (Mance Lipscomb Vol. 4 from 1967)); the other 16 are previously unissued, five of them sourced from April 1966, the rest from 1960. It's entirely typical of Mance Lipscomb's output: versatile, relaxed, and samey-sounding acoustic blues with some prominent ragtime and folk influences. The 1960 material doesn't boast fidelity as strong as the 1966 takes (though it's certainly adequate), and has more of a down-home flavor; the 1966 tracks sound more innocuous and front-porch-relaxed by contrast. ~Richie Unterberger

Note: Mance Lipscomb was a great songster, someone who knew hundreds of songs and could deliver any and all of them in different but effective ways. He sang blues, spirituals, old folk numbers, and his own tunes. Lipscomb had few rivals when it came to telling stories, setting up situations, creating characters, and depicting incidents. This 24-song reissued disc from 1964 puts Lipscomb in a perfect context, ripping through various songs and talking about everything from drugs to domestic conflict and police worries to spiritual concerns.

For most listeners, Blind Boy Fuller's Truckin' My Blues Away (on Yazoo) may be a better bet than Columbia/Legacy's East Coast Piedmont Style, since it actually has a higher concentration of strong material, capturing the influential bluesman at his peak. All of the 14 tracks were recorded between 1935 and 1938, and there are a number of exceptional performances here, including "Homesick and Lonesome Blues," "Truckin' My Blues Away," "I Crave My Pig Meat," "Walking My Troubles Away" and "Sweet Honey Hole." It's a nice, concise introduction and, best of all, there's no duplication between this disc and East Coast Piedmont Style, making the two discs wonderful complementary collections that tell a comprehensive story when taken together.

At the time of this 1979 recording, Johnny Shines was a living link to blues mythology. A traveling companion to Robert Johnson in the '30s, and a translator of Delta blues language into an electric context in the '40s and '50s, Shines was largely ignored by the industry until the blues revival of the '60s. Fortunately, he was still a dynamic performer in his later years, as this live document shows. Shines nods to his association with Johnson by performing three of his songs--"Terraplane Blues," "Kind Hearted Woman," and "Sweet Home Chicago"--all given meticulous, loving treatments, with Shines's ragged tenor lending a distinctive edge. Shines's own compositions stand up as well, the boogie-inflected "I Will Be Kind" in particular, and "I Had a Good Home," a mournful meditation on losing one's house in a storm. The between-song banter shows a thoughtful, charming side of the man, though the intensity of his performances leaves a much deeper impression. Shines plays his acoustic guitar with plenty of percussive attack and dazzling, fluid embellishment, and sings with the vigor and passion characteristic of the best Delta blues. HEY BA-BA-RE-BOP! is the next best thing to having seen Shines live. Recorded live in 1971. Solo performer: Johnny Shines (vocals, guitar).

“Geoff is one of the best blues guitarists I know with a completely individual style.” – Jorma Kaukonen
“Never, ever miss an opportunity to see Geoff Achison perform live!” – Hittin’ The Note magazine USA

Whilst already known as a pretty handy electric guitarist fronting his blues/funk 'Souldiggers' group, Geoff has made something of a 'second career' for himself through his popular Solo Acoustic shows. His acoustic repertoire showcases his guitar and vocal style over a broad range of originals and re-arranged blues & soul standards. He uses no gadgetry or electronic effects but rather makes an entertaining show of the various sounds and textures he energetically coaxes out of one simple instrument. Geoff has traveled the world and earned himself many accolades for his thoughtful songwriting and stunning acoustic arrangements of epic tunes such as ‘Superstition’, 'Whipping Post' and his own ‘Train Ride'.

'Live At Burrinja Cafe' won three MBAS blues awards in 2012 for Best Album, Best Song (Train Ride) and Solo Artist Of The Year.

Notes: Every now and again you hear an artist that just pulls you up short, stops you dead in your tracks, like being on a top flight cutting horse that can stop on a dime, rollback and give you a nickel in change, Matt Andersen's voice did that to me the first time I heard it. He is the whole package and can play guitar, write relevant songs and present the songs in a way that will just bring you to a standstill you and make you listen up, just check this YouTube video. Now you are saying wait a minute this is a disc by Matt Andersen and Mike Stevens; well the disc came to me because of the effect that Matt had when I first heard him and started investigating who the guy is, which is what led me to this. And, so we are clear, Mike Stevens is a renowned harmonica virtuoso known mostly in Bluegrass and Experimental music circles more than holds up his end of the partnership on harmonica, songwriting and production. Just please forgive the excess on Matt as he is the one that drew me into this.

Mike Stevens and Matt Anderson wrote the twelve songs on this disc and there are some gems here that have a way of stretching the tension created between their respective instruments. There are times when you don't realize the sound is created by just guitar, both as a lead and rhythm instrument, and the harmonica wizardry of Mr. Stevens and the vocals of Mr. Andersen. The songs are in a variety of tempos that reflect in the emotions of each. There is the beautiful love song Hold Me With Both Hands, and the wonderful interplay of both instruments and voice in the Livin' In Sarnia that creates a pressure that is essential to the song. This is a disc that is going to fill you in every way; there are not often discs that fit together as a whole as well as this one does. It is going to put a smile on your face and have you tapping your toes if you're not actually up and dancing. ~ A review written for the Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange by Bob Gottlieb

Personnel:
Mance Lipscomb - Guitar, Vocals
Chris Strachwitz - Producer, Engineer

Notes: “Mance Lipscomb, a Texas sharecropper for most of his life, was born in 1895. When not farming in his hometown of Navasota, he assumed the role of local entertainer and songstera versatile singer/musician who could handle a hardened blues just as easily as a soft children's song. Although Lipscomb didn't begin recording until he was nearly 65, he left behind a remarkably rich catalog of Texas blues before he died in 1976.
Country blues, that sparse, mostly raw and rootsy form directly linked to slave worksongs and field hollerswas his specialty. Equipped with a voice that could convey a range of emotions, Lipscomb was also an impressive guitarist, as this anthology reveals. Most of the 22 songs on 'Texas Songster' are originals, the best being 'Sugar Babe,' an obscure ditty written by Lipscomb when he was a teen; 'Ella Speed,' a bluesy ballad that remains one of his better-known numbers; and 'Bout a Spoonful,' a clever song about sex.
Lipscomb never quite achieved the popularity in mainstream blues circles as another Texas bluesman, Sam `Lightning' Hopkins. But it wasn't because he didn't deserve the recognition. Listen to this disc, read the excellent liner notes by Chris Strachwitz (the folklorist who discovered him) and Mack McCormick, and you'll agree that Lipscomb is one of the music form's great unsung heroes.” ~Review by Robert Santelli

Various - Pye Blues Legends In London (3-disc set)

In many respects, England was a more hospitable home for the blues in the mid-/late-1950's than America was -- where even labels such as Chicago's Chess usually limited their blues LPs to collections of singles. In England it was possible for artists such as Big Bill Broonzy, Josh White, and Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee to record entire LPs while touring. Pye/Nixa Records reissued these sides many times, but it wasn't until 2003 that the current owner of their library, Castle Communications, did a state-of-the-art digital remastering of their three classic U.K. albums, Broonzy's Tribute to Big Bill (1955), White's Blues and . . . (1956), and Terry and McGhee's Sonny, Brownie & Chris (1958), with full annotation. The music is a mix of virtuoso acoustic blues with some small jazz-style group accompaniment, from some top players, including Chris Barber and Phil Seamen, all of which is worth hearing and a lot of which is filled with surprises for all of us. ~Bruce Eder

A self-taught musician and lyricist with eyes and ears wide open, always eager to soak up songs and stories. Klatt has sang in countless barrooms, cafes, living rooms, theaters and street corners all over the world, entertaining folks with his boisterous finger-picking style and whiskey worn voice, continuing the troubador tradition of folks like Utah Phillips, Blind Willie MacTell and Towns Van Zandt.
In 2009 Klatt settled down in Minneapolis, formed a band and founded the Cat Swingers. Soon enough he found himself performing around 100-150 nights a year perfecting his crafts of performance and songwriting.
In 2011 Klatt received a Minnesota State Arts Grant to record a collaborative album with a number of veteran Minnesota legends including Spider John Koerner, Dakota Dave Hull, Cornbread Harris and Charlie Parr. Mississippi Roll has since garnered praise all the way from California to the UK.
With a solo album under his belt you can expect to see him back on the road, with or without his Cat Swingers, rollin' through a town near you.

Personnel:
Doctor Ross (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica)
Wiley Gatlin (vocals, guitar)
Henry Hill (piano)
Barber Parker (drums)
Reubin Martin (washboard).

Notes: Dr. Ross, “The Harmonica Boss,” was one of the truly original personalities on the postwar Blues scene. A one-man band, playing the guitar left-handed with a harmonica on a rack around his neck, Dr. Ross produced some of the most hypnotic, John Lee Hooker-like boogie rhythms ever to come out of the Mississippi Delta.
These are his first and best recordings. Recorded in Memphis between 1951 and 1954.

This one will make your teeth rattle. A veteran of the early-'50s Sun Studio in Memphis, Ross became known as the "one-man band," a routine gleaned from his mentor Joe Hill Louis. He plays both fine harp (out of the Sonny Boy I mold) and exciting rhythm guitar characterized by churning, mesmerizing rhythms spiced by treble fills. These 22 infectious tracks are the good doctor's very first recordings, and they present him with rhythm section -- a style that predates his "one-man" days.

Masterful, versatile guitarist and singer songwriter Mike Dowling is truly a player's player. Dowling's new CD release was recorded with a band of Nashville pickers including Mark Schatz on bass and fiddling great Vassar Clements. Bluegrass Unlimited, while issuing a disclaimer that "Beats Workin'" surely isn't bluegrass... "It's not even close, except that it swings, it's jazzy, it's bluesy, it jumps, strides and rags and it reaches right out and grabs you..." pronounced the album a 'pure delight'. When you've experienced this lively mix of Dowling originals and country blues and swing classics, you will too.

Booker's unique style combined rhythm and blues with jazz standards. Musician Dr. John described Booker as “the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced.

Booker was the son and grandson of Baptist ministers, both of whom played the piano. He spent most of his childhood on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where his father pastored a church. Booker received a saxophone as a gift from his mother, but he demonstrated a stronger interest in the keyboard. He first played organ in his father's churches.

After returning to New Orleans in his early adolescence, Booker attended the Xavier Academy Preparatory School. He learned some elements of his keyboard style from Tuts Washington and Edward Frank.[2] Booker was highly skilled in classical music and played Bach and Chopin, among other composers. He also mastered and memorized solos by Erroll Garner, and Liberace. His thorough background in piano literature may have enabled his original and virtuosic interpretations of jazz and other popular music. These performances combined elements of stride, blues, gospel and Latin piano styles. ~partial bio from Wikipedia

Robert Petway - Boogie Woogie Woman

4. Ride 'em On Down - 2:57
5. Bertha Lee Blues - 2:54
6. Let Me Be Your Boss - 3:13
7. Catfish Blues - 2:54

Notes: Very little is known about Robert Petway. His birthplace is speculated to have been at or near J.F. Sligh Farm near Yazoo City, Mississippi, birthplace of his close friend and fellow bluesman Tommy McClennan. His birthdate is guessed at 1908, and the date and even the occurrence of his death is unknown. There is only one known picture of Petway, a publicity photo from 1941. He only recorded 16 songs, but he is said to have been an influence on many notable blues and rock musicians, including John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix.
One of Petway's most influential songs is "Catfish Blues", which he recorded in 1941. Muddy Waters used the lyrics and style of "Catfish Blues" for his first single "Rollin' Stone", the song from which the rock group The Rolling Stones chose their band name. There is debate on whether Petway deserves any credit for the Muddy Waters song, mostly stemming from the fact that blues musicians often borrow lines and verses from each other and often use common symbols and phrases that can't be traced back to one source. There is even some speculation that Tommy McClennan wrote the version that Petway recorded. Max Haymes has written a well-researched article, "Catfish Blues (Origins of a Blues)" on the topic, available at earlyblues.com. When David "Honeyboy" Edwards, a follower of Petway, was asked if Petway wrote the song, he replied, "He just made that song up and used to play it at them old country dances. He just made it up and kept it in his head." ~Wikipedia

For completists, specialists and academics, Document's Complete Recorded Works (1928-29) is invaluable, offering an exhaustive overview of Herschel Brown's early recordings. For less dedicated listeners, the disc is a mixed blessing. There are some absolutely wonderful, classic performances on the collection, but the long running time, exacting chronological sequencing, poor fidelity (all cuts are transferred from original acetates and 78s), and number of performances are hard to digest. The serious blues listener will find all these factors to be positive, but enthusiasts and casual listeners will find that the collection is of marginal interest for those very reasons. ~ Thom Owens

Notes: Brownie McGhee was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee.[3] As a child he had polio, which incapacitated his leg. His brother Granville "Sticks" or "Stick" McGhee was nicknamed for pushing young Brownie around in a cart. His father, George McGhee, was a factory worker known around University Avenue for playing guitar and singing. Brownie's uncle made him a guitar from a tin marshmallow box and a piece of board.[4] McGhee spent much of his youth immersed in music, singing with local harmony group the Golden Voices Gospel Quartet and teaching himself to play guitar. A March of Dimes-funded leg operation enabled McGhee to walk. Read more

Notes: The joyous whoop that Sonny Terry naturally emitted between raucous harp blasts was as distinctive a signature sound as can possibly be imagined. Only a handful of blues harmonica players wielded as much of a lasting influence on the genre as did the sightless Terry (Buster Brown, for one, copied the whoop and all), who recorded some fine urban blues as a bandleader in addition to serving as guitarist Brownie McGhee's longtime duet partner.
Saunders Terrell's father was a folk-styled harmonica player who performed locally at dances, but blues wasn't part of his repertoire (he blew reels and jigs). Terry wasn't born blind, he lost sight in one eye when he was five, the other at age 18. That left him with extremely limited options for making any sort of feasible living, so he took to the streets armed with his trusty harmonicas. Terry soon joined forces with Piedmont pioneer Blind Boy Fuller, first recording with the guitarist in 1937 for Vocalion.
Terry's unique talents were given an extremely classy airing in 1938 when he was invited to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall at the fabled From Spirituals to Swing concert. He recorded for the Library of Congress that same year and cut his first commercial sides in 1940. Terry had met McGhee in 1939, and upon the death of Fuller, they joined forces, playing together on a 1941 McGhee date for OKeh and settling in New York as a duo in 1942. There they broke into the folk scene, working alongside Leadbelly, Josh White, and Woody Guthrie.

Big Bill Broonzy was born William Lee Conley Broonzy in the tiny town of Scott, Mississippi, just across the river from Arkansas. During his childhood, Broonzy's family -- itinerant sharecroppers and the descendants of ex-slaves -- moved to Pine Bluff to work the fields there. Broonzy learned to play a cigar box fiddle from his uncle, and as a teenager, he played violin in local churches, at community dances, and in a country string band. During World War I, Broonzy enlisted in the U.S. Army, and in 1920 he moved to Chicago and worked in the factories for several years. In 1924 he met Papa Charlie Jackson, a New Orleans native and pioneer blues recording artist for Paramount. Jackson took Broonzy under his wing, taught him guitar, and used him as an accompanist. Broonzy's entire first session at Paramount in 1926 was rejected, but he returned in November 1927 and succeeded in getting his first record, House Rent Stomp, onto Paramount wax. As one of his early records came out with the garbled moniker of Big Bill Broomsley, he decided to shorten his recording name to Big Bill, and this served as his handle on records until after the second World War. Among aliases used for Big Bill on his early releases were Big Bill Johnson, Sammy Sampson, and Slim Hunter.

Tony McPhee & Friends - Two in One

Styles: British Blues, Acoustic Blues
Recorded: 1968/1969
Released: 1998
Label: BGO
File: mp3@320K/s
Size: 249,0 MB
Art: front + back

Notes: These two compilations, paired up here on a double-CD set, were just among the many to come out in the late '60s dedicated to British blues. And every single one seemed to feature the remarkable Jo-Ann Kelly (simply one of the best blues singers of any time and place, who sadly died in 1990) and Tony McPhee, who'd go on to greater fame and fortune and guitarist and leader of the Groundhogs. They were among the leading lights of the scene, and the ones who rose above (even if, ridiculously, Kelly didn't think her voice had matured). But the richness of the scene can be heard from the presence of artists like Andy Fernbach, Simon & Steve, and Dave Kelly, brother to Jo-Ann. John Lewis -- who'd re-emerge after the heady days of punk as Jona Lewie and score a couple of U.K. novelty hit singles -- Brett Marvin and the Thunderbolts (best described as a jug band, one which, like Lewie, earned a pair of British hits), and those who vanished without trace, like Jim Pitts and Graham Hines. The very best of them channel the spirit of the Mississippi Delta in their singing and playing -- to hear Kelly and McPhee together on "Oh Death" is a spiritual experience -- but the first of the two CDs actually seems to have more depth about it, while the second is content to settle for throwaways like "Crazy With the Blues" or Lewis's "London's Got the Blues," which don't seem to do anyone any favors. The first disc, produced by Mike Batt (of Wombles fame) has more sonic depth, while McPhee's work behind the board on the second is thin -- which is surprising, given the fact that some of the tracks, like "She's Gone" by the John Mayall-sounding Andy Fernbach Connexion, feature full electric bands. As snapshots of a time and place, these compilations are invaluable; they let us reflect on the fact that British blues isn't an oxymoron, and that, for a while at least, the quality approached that of Chicago, Memphis, or even Clarksdale. ~ AMG

14. Do Lord (Traditional, Henry) - 2:24

Notes: After appearing at the 1993 Lowcountry Blues Bash in Charleston, South Carolina, septagenarian blues singer Big Boy Henry retreated to a local recording studio with some of his musical buddies to record an impromptu album of Piedmont blues classics and new original numbers. Chicago Bob Nelson added his formidable harmonica; Dave Peabody (visiting from London) dazzled on acoustic guitar & backing vocals; Shrimp City Slim (Gary Erwin, who also produced the album) rocked the house on piano and washboard, with an ace rhythm section of Jay Niver on drums (from Blue Light Special) and Ted Donlon on bass (from The Flatcats). A further bonus: blues diva Sandra Hall makes her very first CD appearance, singing with Big Boy on several numbers. The fun lasted for two days and the CD was released in April, 1993. Considered to be the quintessential document of this beloved and influential bluesman, "Carolina Blues Jam" belongs in any serious collection of downhome blues.

Leadbelly - The Definitive Leadbelly [Catfish] (3 Disc set)

Styles: Country Blues, Acoustic Blues, Folk-Blues, Folksongs, Songster
Released: 2002
Label: Catfish
Art: front

Notes: For some reason very few people know about this compilation. I'm not sure why, as it's definitely the best Leadbelly compilation on the market. The sound quality is great, it's comprehensive without being too long, and it's got great liner notes. The way the songs are divided on the discs is great too. Disc one contains most of the big hits, making it a sort of greatest hits album, while discs two and three contain more rarities and alternate takes. Definitely recommended for any Leadbelly fan or anyone looking for an introduction to the artist. ~ Aaron Smith

Dan Pickett - His Chicago Blues

Reissuers have unearthed little information about Dan Pickett: He may have come from Alabama, he played a nice slide guitar in a Southeastern blues style, and he did one recording session for the Philadelphia-based Gotham label in 1949. That session produced five singles, all of which have now been compiled along with four previously unreleased sides on a reissue album that purports to contain Pickett's entire recorded output — unless, of course, as some reviewers have speculated, Dan Pickett happens also to be Charlie Pickett, the Tennessee guitarist who recorded for Decca in 1937. As Tony Russell observed in Juke Blues, both Picketts recorded blues about lemon-squeezing, and Dan uses the name Charlie twice in the lyrics to "Decoration Day." 'Tis from such mystery and speculation that the minds of blues collectors do dissolve. ~ Jim O'Neal

During the 1940s, Douglas Elijah Quattlebaum (1927) toured with a number of gospel groups, such as the Bells of Joy. In 1952, he recorded solo as a blues singer for the Gotham label. He was a forceful singer and guitarist, having been influenced by Blind Boy Fuller. In 1961, he was rediscovered in Philadelphia, singing and playing blues over the public address system of his ice-cream van, hence the title of his last recording, Softee Man Blues.
The forteen gripping, impassioned blues in this album will serve admirably to introduce the impressive talents of this singer and guitarist whose vital, fervently emotional performances restore to currency the art of the urban blues shouter in all its rousing, urgent intensity.

Markus' new album "Snakeskin Violin" is a kaleidiscopic journey in which fellow travelers appear and vanish, and features collaborations with trance groove Wassoulou hunters in Bamako, a shaman in Timbuktu, old-school drummers in Como, Mississippi, traveling Tamasheks in California, and African Diaspora musicians in the US.

Note: Bill Sheffield, remember the name.
There are a bazillion folks out there, trying to pass themselves off as blues musicians, trying to pretend that they really understand what the blues are and trying to sell you the notion that they carry the very essence of the blues deeply buried inside their souls.
Once in a great while you are fortunate enough to discover someone who is not a pretender; you hear someone who understands the full range of the blues; someone who appreciates that, as Willie Dixon said, blues is just a slice of life. It is a rare treat to hear someone who knows that the blues encompass the full range emotions and experience that comes with life.
Bill Sheffield, remember the name, is one of those people.
I popped Journal On A Shelf in the CD player expecting to give a casual first listening while I puttered around with other chores. What I heard was such a surprise, was so true and honest, that I sat down and listened. I didn't get up until I had listened to the entire CD. Starting with Cherry Blossom Time, a crisp and clean Piedmont style piece with lyrics that celebrate the joy of being alive and ending up with the title cut, there isn't a throw-away cut in the whole set of tunes.
With 14 solid tracks it is difficult to identify two or three as the strongest for fear of giving the others short shrift but I have to mention New Tattoo" and I Don't Hate Nobody. New Tattoo is another tune that shows the blues can be up-tempo, humorous and light-hearted. I Don't Hate Nobody is as nearly a perfectly written song as you will ever find. The music is solid and skillful. The lyrics are tight and poignant. This song stands on it's own and justifies that entire CD.
One more tune that has to be mentioned is The Ballad of Brer Rabbit. This cut is something of a departure from the rest of the CD, with it's heavier electric sound using effects on the guitar and harp, but this updated retelling of Brer Rabbit is a great treat.
This is a mostly acoustic collection of blues and blues-based songs featuring mostly original tunes backed up by a group of musicians that know when to step out and when to lay back. Too often acoustic blues musicians try to fill out the sound with backing musicians that get in the way of the song. The resulting sound covers up some otherwise good songs but that is definitely not the case here. The arrangements and musicianship all work to let the jewels shine.
Mostly acoustic, some electric, mostly originals, some covers, Piedmont, slide, great vocals and excellent sidemen. If you want to hear what the blues can be today, then you need to hear Journal On A Shelf. ~ by Tampa Blue

Notes: Born 11 April 1913, Ellendale, Tennessee, USA, died 22 August 1979, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Granderson left home when he was in his teens, moving to Chicago, Illinois, in 1928. Although not a professional musician, he did work with John Lee ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson, among others. He turned to music full-time in the 60s and was featured as sideman and leader on many anthologies, although he never made a full album in his own right. Granderson sang and played guitar close to the style of the Memphis musicians of his youth. He stopped performing in public in 1975 and died of cancer in 1979. AMG

Granderson's guitar work combines agile fingerpicking with a steady but understated rhythmic pulse; his harmonic and rhythmic conceptions reveal echoes of the Memphis-area string bands of his youth, especially on uptempo numbers like the title tune. This disc is both a significant historical document and a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. -- Living Blues

Mississippi John Hurt - The Complete Studio Recordings (3-disc set)

THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS contains TODAY! (1966)/THE IMMORTAL MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT (1967)/LAST SESSIONS (1966). Although not as consistently magnificent as Hurt's 1928 recordings, the performances the artist recorded for Vanguard in the mid 1960's would be the zenith of many blues artist's entire careers. Songs like the opening "Payday" and "Poor Boy, Long Ways From Home" rank with any folk-blues song ever recorded. This fantastic set collects the three albums Vanguard released in Hurt's lifetime and as such is undeniably the package to go for to acquire these later gems. ~ Thomas Ward

Over the years, Carlos and I occasionally perform as a duo when there is not enough money to pay the full band. We have plowed through such gigs with my very modest proficiency in the picking styles of country blues artists like Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bukka White, Robert Johnson, etc. applied to the 50's and 60's electric Chicago blues material that is the staple of our full band. Little by little we have gotten better at this to the point where we thought it might be worth documenting a live performance. My playing is a bit rough around the edges, but I hope enjoyable, and Carlos is at the top of his game here with his harp and singing IMO. This CD is dedicated to our friends who have left us - Tim, Sean, Donnie, and Frank. We are proud to call them our friends and thankful for the gift of having been able to make music with them. ~Jim "Tase Bud" Ransone
