The Mojo Medicine Show is psychedelic, back porch blues at its best!

The Mojo Medicine Show is a unique blues duo that blends the jug juice of 1930's juke band music with the electric kool-aid jams of the 1960's.
The original Mojo Medicine Show toured the western slopes of Colorado in the summer of 1976. This ragged and hairy troupe of musicians, Gypsy fortune tellers and belly dancers performed their way into the hearts of many a mountain town. It is in this tradition of Colorado’s own home grown, psychedelic, back porch blues that the Mojo Medicine founder, Mad Dog Friedman, decided to create a unique blues duo that captures the spirit of those amazing times. This new incarnation of the Mojo Medicine Show features Mad Dog Friedman on harp, vocals and Theremin and Dan Crecco on washboard, percussion and iPad synth. The modern Mojo Medicine Show puts down the real deal, hippy trippy blues seldom heard in this day and age. From their contemporary, simple, heartfelt, rural-rooted blues to their vintage, analog, improvisational, experimental, aleatory 'lectronica, the Mojo Medicine Show offers a unique alternative to today's throwback, retro-folk and refracted root music scene.

Dave Duncan found himself on a bench on 2nd street in Clarksdale, Mississippi one lazy late afternoon in May last year. Amusing himself by playing some lonesome blues on his open tuned dobro , his thoughts rambled as his bottleneck whined…

Duncan was stirred from his trance by a fellow spirit calling out an invitation to him.. as fate would have it, he had parked on a bench directly across the street from the Hambone Gallery. Folk artist and gallery owner Stan Street called over to invite the guitarist to that evening’s music event…some downhome blues to be played right there at the Hambone Gallery. Duncan crossed the street that warm summer night, introductions exchanged, grooves counted off..and the great new blues duo Duncan Street was rolling.

Writing new songs & playing gigs together in various locations throughout Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida thru the summer of 2013, the bluesy Duncan Street duo headed to Lafayette, Louisiana to record the best of their brand new original material. Duncan called on his old friend , multi Grammy award winning engineer, Tony Daigle, to direct the recordings. Three days later the album to be called Baptized By The Blues was in the can.

Stan Street plays wicked blues harmonica and is featured heavily on the recordings. As well as wailing like Little Walter, Street provides the driving rhythms by thumping the bass drum, whacking a cardboard box..and yes, even providing a little hamboning on the John Hurt inspired song, Love Me Tonite. Singing lead on the 2 songs he wrote on the record and sweet harmony on many others, Street further demonstrates his musical versatility with some very tasty , laidback tenor saxophone on The Blues Comes in All Colors.

Dave Duncan is a guitarist with a songwriting background. Having lived in Nashville for 20 years, his songs have been recorded by over 20 artists..including three songs by soul singer extraordinaire Curtis Salgado that were nominated for Blues Song of The Year in just the last 5 years.

Duncan has dug deeply into American Roots guitar music over the years...playing pedal steel guitar with cowboy singer Johnny Western, blazing the 6 string with rockabilly piano player SE Willis, cutting deep electric blues with the legendary Nashville guitar genius Jack Pearson, and cranking out long jams with cult favorites GooseCreek Symphony…as well as performing with his own band and as a solo act.

Stan Street wrote the title song Baptized By The Blues and along with the Dave Duncan penned Watermelon BBQ & Beer , these songs characterize the album in its steadily upbeat, rhythmic & joyful feel.. & its occasionally humorous (in a twisted kind of way ) lyrics. Good New Music. Good Upbeat Blues.

The joyous whoop that Sonny Terry naturally emitted between raucous harp blasts was as distinctive a signature sound as can possibly be imagined. Only a handful of blues harmonica players wielded as much of a lasting influence on the genre as did the sightless Terry (Buster Brown, for one, copied the whoop and all), who recorded some fine urban blues as a bandleader in addition to serving as guitarist Brownie McGhee's longtime duet partner.

Saunders Terrell's father was a folk-styled harmonica player who performed locally at dances, but blues wasn't part of his repertoire (he blew reels and jigs). Terry wasn't born blind, he lost sight in one eye when he was five, the other at age 18. That left him with extremely limited options for making any sort of feasible living, so he took to the streets armed with his trusty harmonicas. Terry soon joined forces with Piedmont pioneer Blind Boy Fuller, first recording with the guitarist in 1937 for Vocalion.

Terry's unique talents were given an extremely classy airing in 1938 when he was invited to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall at the fabled From Spirituals to Swing concert. He recorded for the Library of Congress that same year and cut his first commercial sides in 1940. Terry had met McGhee in 1939, and upon the death of Fuller, they joined forces, playing together on a 1941 McGhee date for OKeh and settling in New York as a duo in 1942. There they broke into the folk scene, working alongside Leadbelly, Josh White, and Woody Guthrie.

While Brownie McGhee was incredibly prolific in the studio during the mid-'40s, Terry was somewhat less so as a leader (perhaps most of his time was occupied by his prominent role in Finian's Rainbow on Broadway for approximately two years beginning in 1946). There were sides for Asch and Savoy in 1944 before three fine sessions for Capitol in 1947 (the first two featuring Stick McGhee rather than Brownie on guitar) and another in 1950.

Terry made some nice sides in an R&B mode for Jax, Jackson, Red Robin, RCA Victor, Groove, Harlem, Old Town, and Ember during the '50s, usually with Brownie close by on guitar. But it was the folk boom of the late '50s and early '60s that made Brownie and Sonny household names (at least among folk aficionados). They toured long and hard as a duo, cutting a horde of endearing acoustic duet LPs along the way, before scuttling their decades-long partnership amidst a fair amount of reported acrimony during the mid-'70s.

Notes: This live recording was done at one of their many gigs at B.B. King's in Universal Citywalk in California, but a listener could almost swear it was recorded on high-end equipment in the coziness of his or her Uncle Frank's living room. These gentlemen, known for their solo work, dissipate fears of swollen egos from such super ventures. With the exception of one standard, all selections come from either artist's pen and although not originally written for a duo setting, they seem tailor made for such an arrangement. If the listener thinks at the end that he or she has accidentally hit the "repeat" mode on the CD remote box when hearing strains of the first song, it's a prank by two kids at heart.

Australian Dean Haitani's first introduction to blues music and a big influence on Dean’s blues guitar style was B.B. King’s “Live In Cook County” Album. Practicing 10 hours a day, Dean submerged himself in B.B. and any other music he could get his hands on. Major music influences include: Mark Knofler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Emmanuel, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Billy Joel, Les Paul, Charlie Christian, Miles Davis, George Benson, The Gypsie Kings and The Bondi Cigars.

Dean’s solo acoustic shows comprise of foot percussion, a variety of guitars (plus octave, delay, distortion, phaser & wah effects), vocals & harmonica. Dean’s band shows range from raw 3 piece to full band (Keys, backup vocals, horn sections). Stylistically, Dean’s music is Roots Music (a melting pot of funky rhythms, jazzy influenced progressions, folk subtleties, country flavours & blues grit.) His music is contemporary, forever pushing the musical envelope, his tasteful, original songs are stories are from the heart & mind, with compassion for humanity. “I always try to look at the world in a positive way with all it’s marvels and flaws”, he says.

Notes: 'Hope’ is the second-album by Mountain Men. A duo featuring one man on guitar and vocals, and another member playing the harmonica, I’d argue that Mountain Men are one of the most underrated acts in the world today. Their country music has such an original slant on it, drawing on all the formalities of country music, but expressed in their own style. What makes Mountain Men’s music so great to listen to is the complete chemistry between its two and only members. Whilst the foreground of the music is occupied by the vocals, it is the instrumentation in the background that makes their music so impressive.
The harmonica playing on each song is at an insanely talented level. It acts like a voice of its own, and accompanies the acoustic riffs perfectly helping to add a dense layer to each and every song. This was present on the first album ‘Spring Time Coming’, and there was a wonderful mixture of upbeat songs and more slower songs. It was a highly impressive début album, that seemingly went unnoticed in the musical world.
With ‘Hope’, we see Mountain Men continuing to do what they do best. Their music is still twinged with the dense layers of harmonica, which helps to add so much more emotion to the music. The album feels as though it is split into two parts, with the first half containing more darker and slightly more aggressive songs, and the second half featuring much lighter and delicate songs. There’s a few surprises on this album, including a rather unconventional cover of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. It is an interesting version, and it is interesting to hear the band putting their unique slant on the song, using their own style to present it in a much different way.
Musically, this album is wonderful. The delicate songs feature beautiful acoustic riffs, accompanied by incredibly impressive harmonica playing. The vocals are as strong as they’ve always been, and in these delicate songs the lyrics are crooned compassionately and emotionally, giving the songs depth and emotion. The harmonica adds to this depth, as like I said, it feels like its own voice in the song, singing its own parts. The harmonica in Mountain Men’s music has always been highly impressive, and it hasn’t faltered for a second on this album.
‘Hope’ is a very impressive second album. From a band who remains relatively unknown, their music is still of such a high quality, with lots of effort being put into the writing, recording and presentation of each song. The band uses their strengths very well on this album, and you can see it in the songs that are the highlights on the album. As it is, I feel that the inclusion of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is an unnecessary one, as whilst it has merit of its own, I feel that it personally draws the listener out of the album due to awareness of the song itself. When the album plays its songs by Mountain Men, it draws you in and you can get lost in the dense layers of harmonica and guitar. I felt that as soon as I heard and recognised Nirvana’s lyrics on the album, that I was drawn out of this immersion quite suddenly. The awareness of the song was too much, and it is a shame because the music Mountain Men write are good enough in their own merit. That being said though the cover is good, don’t get me wrong. In conclusion, I feel that ‘Hope’ is a worthy second album, being every bit as good as ‘Spring Time Coming’. It is a shame with a band so unknown that not enough people know of them, as Mountain Men are a band worthy of recognition. ~ Cd Critic

Sonny Boy Williamson - The Essential Sonny Boy Williamson II (2-disc set)

Rice Miller, "Sonny Boy II", began his association with Chess Records in 1955, when he was already at least 45 years old. His exuberant yet dynamic and intricate playing brought the harmonica from the Delta to Chicago, influencing every harp blower since. He developed his rough and wild, hard-swinging, juke-joint style during extensive travels throughout the South. These 45 potent Chess recordings are more refined and urbanized than his earlier Trumpet work, but still capture the excitement of those early sides. Included are remakes of Trumpet classics such as "Eyesight to the Blind" (re-titled "Born Blind") as well as classic gems including "One Way Out" and "Bring It On Home." --Marc Greilsamer

A celebrated harmonica teacher as well as player, New York native Adam Gussow has been “kicking and stomping” in Oxford, Mississippi for more than a decade now. He is best known for his long partnership with guitarist/one-man-band Sterling “Mr. Satan” Magee, a Mississippi native with whom Gussow teamed up in 1986. The unlikely pair worked the streets of Harlem for five years before renaming themselves “Satan and Adam,” releasing their W. C. Handy Award nominated debut CD, Harlem Blues, and becoming a national touring act, working the club and festival circuit throughout the 1990s.

In recent years, Gussow has reinvented himself as a harmonica-powered one-man band, releasing a pair of solo CDs, Kick and Stomp (2010) and Southbound (2011). “Think James Cotton's warbling excitement and R.L. Burnside's grifter stomp, tied up with Lightnin' Hopkins' dustbowl charm,” wrote a reviewer for Living Blues, “and you've got the Adam Gussow sound.”

Born and raised in east San Jose. Influenced by the great concerts in the Bay Area and all the music within my own family. The a.m. radio at the time brought us Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, BB King and Donny Hathaway in the same half hour. My family brought me homegrown pure folklorico music from Mexico. Dancing and playing and singing. Mix it all together and you get bands like War, Santana and Tower of Power – which are all heavy influences into how I think of rhythms and music.

I started out on the accordion. A great big one. Bigger than me. I had to pull it around in my red wagon and have someone put it on me once I sat down. That’s how big. Soon my brother Dennis was turning my head with the guitar and blues a la Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Muddy Waters and the Rolling Stones. I graduated to rhythm guitar so my brother could practice his leads. Jimmy Reed all day for me. Then I saw an old cat play harmonica in the greyhound bus stations. Went out and mowed lawns all day one Saturday till I had $2.75 to get a marine band ‘c’ harmonica from Langone’s music store on Alum Rock Ave. next to Chuck’s Hobby Shop and across the street from Peter’s Bakery. I played it to everything. Everything on the radio. Everything I heard. I played along. In key or not. I played. I got a rack and played guitar and harp and was the neighborhood jukebox getting called onto friends porches and lawns to play a song.

We worked. I worked all the time. We played on my street. In garages. At jams at the bodega in Campbell, San Jose. At parties. All over… Playing blues was without question already my direction. I loved rock and still do and more where it came from. I studied records and liner notes and went to meet and hang out.

I carried guitars and shined shoes and snuck wine in to hang out. I just wanted to hang. And I did. Like so many of my friends and cats before me did. We just loved the old dudes and the blues dudes and women and had as much fun as we could.

The title to the contrary, "I Have to Paint My Face": Mississippi Blues -- 1960 also includes recordings from California and Lousiana; regardless, these field recordings collected by Arhoolie label founder Chris Strachwitz are invaluable documents of gifted bluesmen who otherwise received virtually no opportunities to record their music. They include Sam Chatmon, Robert Curtis Smith, Wade Walton and Jasper Love. (~~Jason Ankeny)

"In the summer of 1960 I had made my first trip through Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi with British blues scholar, Paul Oliver and his wife Valerie. Paul's homework and dedication to meet, interview and record a good many older blues artists for a series of programs sponsored by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was in large measure responsible for the success of that first trip. This CD brings you the sounds of the Mississippi blues as we were able to meet and document them during that very hot and humid summer. The rediscovery of several historic blues legends like Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Bukka White, Big Boy Crudup along with the discovery of the remarkable Fred McDowell, was still to come!" (~~Excerpt from liner notes by Chris Strachwitz)

"...wonderful music, not only Chatmon's poignant and sometimes bitter songs but also driving and exciting sides by Robert Curtis Smith, the famous barber Wade Walton and Jasper Love; very few of these artists had other opportunities to make more recordings and that's a great pity...everything is excellent and there are no low points. Another one to get, definitely." (~~Robert Sacré, Blues Gazette)
