The album, Narrow House, was produced and recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville by Colin Linden. Other guests include Fats Kaplin and the Rev Joe Rice of the Fairfield Four. The disk was mastered by Ray Kennedy of Zen/Twangtrust- the guy who did those great sounding Steve Earle, Delbert McClinton projects, etc.

...a grand exploration of the diverse tones and moods that can be cast by a Dobro or a slide guitar... ~ by Robert Moyes, Monday Magazine, Victoria, BC
Cox hits every style the dobro can accomodate with its acoustic slithering, including blues with Long John Baldry, newgrass with Tony Trischka, David Grier and John Reischman, cowboy poetry with Diamond Joe White, as well as hard rock and mellow rock. The common thread is that he hires the best players for each style, and with Cox being among the most expressive of Dobro players, the results are stunning. ~ from the Chicago Tribune; by David Duckman
...everyone on the CD had a ball and the results show the versatility of the man and his Dobro...  ~ from Folk Roots Magazine
This is actually Doug Cox and friends like Long John Baldry, Bob Bossin, Ken Hamm, David Grier, John Reischman and plenty of others singing to and accompanying a lot of excellent dobro and slide guitar playing. Cox is the indefatigable Victoria singer-writer-instrumentalist with Travels With Charley and a great lover of guitar-based roots music. Here he indulges all his passions from blues to folk, including a great instrumental of Joni Mitchell's Circle Game, John Baldry singing on Leadbelly's Good Morning Blues and the gnarly I Like To Slide with Ellen McIlwaine. ***1/2 ~ by John P. McLaughlin, The Vancouver Province
...like his first disc, it sports an impressive line-up of guests...Cox sweeps across a lot of musical territory, from the theme to CBC-FM's DISC DRIVE program to the Dave Macon Rag, over to a tribute to Shari Ulrich's old '70s group Pied Pumkin to his ba! ckin g Diamond Joe White on a piece of social-comment poetry titled The Layoff. The production is first rate as are the liner notes and hopefully Bone Bottle Brass or Steel will give Cox some recognition on a national rather than only a regional level. ~ by Peter Nort, The Edmonton Journal ~cdbaby

Robbin Thompson has a unique claim to history. He was one of the only performers to ever actually sing in front of Bruce Springsteen. That was in the early '70's when he was lead singer in an early Springsteen group called Steel Mill. Thompson's career and noteworthiness, however, extend far beyond those roots. In the years since, he has released 8 albums, won THE AMERICAN SONG FESTIVAL twice, written songs with EAGLES bassist Timothy B. Schmit, and established himself as a gifted performer, songwriter, and studio vocalist. He is also an Equity actor.

Currently, Robbin is the Vice President and co-founder of IN YOUR EAR MUSIC AND RECORDING SERVICES in Richmond, Virginia. A company that writes and produces music for commercials and films. ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE BLUES includes songs with backing vocals by TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT OF THE EAGLES, performances by DAVE MATTHEWS BAND keyboardist BUTCH TAYLOR and a song called ORANGE MOON that was recorded in SHANGHAI CHINA featuring traditional chinese instruments. Also included is a previously unreleased song by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN called TRAIN SONG.

Andy worked with such Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame members as Oscar Davis and Slim Harpo's guitarist, James Johnson. Andy struck out on his own in 2006 with a CD of original blues songs, Goin' to the Racetrack, which still receives international radio airplay. In 2008, Andy was a guest artist on Larry Garner's Dixie Frog Records release, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow. After relocating to High Point, NC, in 2010, Andy was awarded runner up at the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society’s solo/duo blues competition. Andy kicked off Greensboro's 25th Anniversary Carolina Blues Festival on May 7th 2011, where he also released his second CD, Down by the River.

Australian Dean Haitani's first introduction to blues music and a big influence on Dean’s blues guitar style was B.B. King’s “Live In Cook County” Album. Practicing 10 hours a day, Dean submerged himself in B.B. and any other music he could get his hands on. Major music influences include: Mark Knofler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Emmanuel, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Billy Joel, Les Paul, Charlie Christian, Miles Davis, George Benson, The Gypsie Kings and The Bondi Cigars.

Dean’s solo acoustic shows comprise of foot percussion, a variety of guitars (plus octave, delay, distortion, phaser & wah effects), vocals & harmonica. Dean’s band shows range from raw 3 piece to full band (Keys, backup vocals, horn sections). Stylistically, Dean’s music is Roots Music (a melting pot of funky rhythms, jazzy influenced progressions, folk subtleties, country flavours & blues grit.) His music is contemporary, forever pushing the musical envelope, his tasteful, original songs are stories are from the heart & mind, with compassion for humanity. “I always try to look at the world in a positive way with all it’s marvels and flaws”, he says.

Bex Marshall - Kitchen Table

 7. Little Bird - 3:36
 8. Bad Bad Girl - 3:29
 9. Too Much Rock & Roll - 3:14
10. Head In The Clouds - 3:13

Personnel:
Bex Marshall (vocals)
Don Wayne Reno (banjo)
Dale Reno (mandolin)
Josh Hillman (violin)
Seymour Milton (piano, keyboards)
Barry Payne (bass guitar)
Gary Johnston (drums)

Recording information:
Boogieback Studios, North London, England (2007)
Deluxe Studios, North London, England (2007)
House Of Mercy, North London, England (2007).

Notes: This is a superb collection of 10 self penned tracks. Its blues with a country and folk tinge and is a very authentic and well crafted set of songs. Marshall has been likened to a range of different artists including Janis Joplin and Maggie Bell for her vocal prowess and Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George and Rory Gallagher for her guitar playing amongst others.
Kitchen Table is Bex's second UK album and her first international release, yet she sounds so assured in her guitar playing, vocals and her song writing.
The two guitars that Marshall plays on the album are her 1973 Gibson Hummingbird and 2006 Ozark resonator with often a slide on her little finger. The title track is the opener and is an upbeat number featuring Bex on both electric and acoustic guitar and lyrically it is a call for the return of the kitchen table as the traditional meeting place of the family - no TV dinners on this album! Red Light is a slow acoustic delta blues song, just Bex and her guitar. Hot Headed Man starts slow but becomes a frantically paced slide guitar number, in which she is backed with Don and Dale Reno from the band Hayseed Dixie. The song is about a man and too much whisky! The same drink is mentioned in Black Guitar, but this is a very different type of song, and it's a stunner. A tale of a man in a failed relationship - "every night he drinks whatever he can afford, he takes a black guitar ... plays it for the Lord".
Musically it is superb with Marshall's haunting slide guitar.
A far more lyrically positive song is the playful Bad Bad Girl, while Little Bird is a standout track where she speaks of the emotion of letting someone go, from the initial sadness of the lyrics comes quite an uplifting feeling. Stand Up combines gospel with blues, while Here Is My Heart is extremely soulful. Too Much Rock n Roll is where the likeness to Rory Gallagher is most apparent and lyrically it refers to the self inflicted passing of a friend.
Simon J Alpin produced the album with Bex and he adds some mandolin to Head in the Clouds the closing and most commercial track on the album. Highly recommended!

Steve Howell has created a gentle, Deep South-inspired acoustic troubadour daydream that is sure to appeal to a diverse set of country, blues and roots music fans. ~Living Blues

The blues evolved from solo acoustic music to include a wide stylistic umbrella. It is therefore cause for celebration when a contemporary artist opts to stake his emotional investment in timeless traditions resulting in deeply nuanced music. Initially inspired by Mississippi John Hurt, master Texas acoustic guitarist and singer Steve Howell performs a range of soulful music burning with an inner flame growing brighter with each listening, while revealing layers of expression often lost in high decibel electric blues.

His fourth release finds him in the estimable company of his friends Chris Michaels (electric and acoustic guitars, bass), Dave Hoffpauir (drums) and Jason Weinheimer (keyboards) who once backed the late, renowned Jim Dickinson. A unique set of ten modern and prewar covers constitutes an extraordinary musical ramble. The mid-tempo country blues “I Had a Notion” (1976) immediately confirms his true blues creds as a guitarist and singer as he casts an evocative rural spell on the Terry Garthwaite tune containing the line “Yes, I believe I will.” “Walk on Boy” (1960) by Mel Tillis has a lilting, olde tyme feel enhanced by nimble picking , the uncommonly supple groove of Hoffpauir and the fluid electric licks from Michaels in a classic country boast with lyrics like “Well, I left my mammy and pappy, just about the age of ten. I got me a job, workin’ on the levee, totin’ water for the hard workin’ men.” A somber mood is evinced on the shuffling “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning” (1928) by the legendary bottlenecker Blind Willie Johnson who sang sacred and secular music. Howell burrows into the profound Bible lyrics with his richly expressive tenor while Michaels first echoes the melody before improvising a raw, distortedsolo in dynamic contrast. On the“lonesome” lyrics of Dock Boggs’ melancholy, minor key “Country Blues” (1927), Howell “lives” through the dark temptations of life, the intertwining acoustic and electric guitars producing a web of swirling feelings.

Janis Joplin may have gotten all of the fame and glory, but she was far from the only white female blues shouter to emerge from the San Francisco music scene of the mid-'60s; The Best of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth is proof positive of that, providing an excellent introduction to one of the more sadly overlooked talents of her time and place. Despite any number of passing similarities to Joplin, Nelson sings with greater finesse; her style is more adaptable as well, capable of fitting comfortably into R&B, psychedelia, and pop ballads, all the while remaining grounded in classic roots music traditions. Highlighted by her perennial "Down So Low" -- subsequently recorded by everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Etta James -- this 17-track compilation also spotlights performances spanning from a wrenching cover of Little Willie John's "Need Your Love So Bad" to contemporary material like Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road" and John Hiatt's "Thinking of You," offering a comprehensive overview of her earliest and most enduring work.
