11 Take the New Frontiers - reprise

A deeper sound than usual for Quasimode -- and that's saying a lot, given their previous albums! There's a fullness here that's really amazing -- a further extension of their already righteous approach to jazzy grooves, into territory that's even more mindblowing, soul-searching, and perfectly played! As before, there's lots of upbeat acoustic rhythms on the set -- club jazz, but not of the fake variety -- topped with searing horn work that includes guest performances from members of Sleep Walker, Soil & Pimp, and Jazz Collective! But almost even better are the few vocal cuts -- featuring either Dwight Trible or Carmen Lundy -- both singers we totally love from a classic jazz perspective, sounding even more wonderful here in the company of Quasimode. The whole thing's great -- an album we'd stack proudly next to our older favorites on Impulse or Strata East -- and titles include "Take The New Frontiers", "Finger Tip", "Young Black Horse", "One Possibility", "Rumble In The Jungle", "Midnight Flower", and "Sound Of Peace".

Each of the dreadlocked prophets who made up reggae's "holy trinity"--Bob Marley, Bunny Livingston, and Peter Tosh--sang for "equal rights and justice." But Tosh, the trio's take-no-prisoners militant, came on the hardest. His voice held the threat of danger, turning sufferahs' dreams and Rastafarian complaints into urgent demands. All the tracks in this remastered 1976 set--Tosh's first for an American major and his first collaboration with drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare (who went on to become reggae's legendary "riddim twins")--instantly became anthems, not just in reggae, but within the international pop lexicon. Some vintage roots reggae may strike contemporary listeners as peace and love cliché, even naive. Not Tosh. Against the background of today's turbulent social climate, Legalize It still sends chills up the spine with the sheer spectacle of a great reggae warrior's refusal to bow.

The definitive masterpiece of the greatest guitarist (and one of the greatest musicians) of all time. Simply put, Jimi Hendrix disregarded such static genre monikers as "blues", "jazz", "rock", and created an equal parts fiery/surreal and dreamy/mystical work of art. The only album that Hendrix himself ever produced shows his marks of genius in the studio, from the smoky, epic "Voodoo Chile" to the magnificently psychedelic wonder of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" to the Neptunian voyage of the cosmos "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)" in which flutes and Jimi's divine guitar prowess conjure up otherworldly sounds of flying seagulls and the underwater depths. Essential for the collection of any serious music lover.

FELA KUTI ''THE BEST OF FELA KUTI, THE BLACK PRESIDENT'' (NIGERIA, 1999)

Free Image Hosting

Political activist, outspoken radical, and inventor of Afro-beat, Fela Anikulapo ("he who carries death in his pouch") Kuti left behind him an incomparable legacy of music when he died in 1997. His struggles against the Nigerian state became the stuff of legend in his home country; his denunciations of world leaders such as Reagan and Thatcher gained him notoriety abroad. But his music remains as his supreme achievement over and above the details of his amazingly courageous life, even if many (most) of his lyrics are angry condemnations of politicians. His vast output of recordings can hardly be distilled onto two discs, but Black President (named after a classic 1981 album) is nevertheless a good introduction to this extraordinary man and his music. The album lacks any personnel details and fails to indicate the origins of each track, but it scarcely matters: Fela's band, Africa 70, was a large and always flexible group (it rarely actually boasted 70 members), with the only constant presence being his 30 backing singers, most of whom were also his wives! Throughout, the beats are solid, the solos are never overpowering, and the rhythm--the powerful, hypnotic rhythm--is always preeminent. If, in the end, it's impossible to divorce Fela Kuti's music from his life, it is at least a real pleasure just to play this album and let his grooves possess your spirit. --Mark Walker

ROBERT MITCHUM ''CALYPSO IS LIKE SO'' (1957)

Forget "Sgt. Pepper's," "Electric Ladyland" and the third Kraftwerk album; for that matter, who needs the artiness of Veloso or Buarque when you have the Mitch? This 1957 effort is simply one of the best LPs ever recorded, and it works on many levels.

Free Image Hosting

The man who did the best version of "Sunny" ever recorded (sure beat Bobby Hebb) and who terrorized children, mothers and nubile teenagers in films like "Cape Fear" and "Night of the Hunter" (and who was one of the heaviest film-noir anti-heroes in classics like "Out of the Past" and "Angel Face") proves his versatility by tackling these calypso songs and rendering them to perfection. The angular, avant-garde banjo on "I Learn a Meringue, Mama" beats anything DNA or Robert Fripp ever put on wax; Robert Fripp never had Jane Greer or Jane Russell as a love interest, and he ever got busted for weed he wouldn't have taken it in stride as well as Mitchum did back in 1947. The fact is, this is one solid platter and anyone who snickers and laughs at this masterpiece, or tries to parade her "hipster" credentials by calling it a camp classic, needs to have a talk with the Mitch, who is still dispensing his brand of wisdom, and a nightly version of "Mama Look a Boo Boo," from the right hand of Yaweh up in tough-guy heaven. Buy this before you buy anything else, and if you're lucky, maybe you'll find a woman you can call "Chiquita!"

MILES DAVIS ''YOU'RE UNDER ARREST'' (1985)

Free Image Hosting

You're Under Arrest is a 1985 album recorded by Miles Davis that saw Miles mix pop tunes with political statements about racism, pollution and war. Among other tracks, the album featured Davis' interpretations of two contemporary pop songs: Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" and Michael Jackson's "Human Nature".

During the recording sessions, Darryl Jones introduced Sting to his longtime idol Miles Davis. Sting was bewildered when Davis asked him if he could speak French, and since he did, to translate the Miranda warning into French and yell it into the microphone against a backing track.

1. "One Phone Call"/"Street Scenes" (Davis)
2. "Human Nature" (John Bettis, Steve Porcaro)
3. "Intro: MD 1"/"Something's On Your Mind"/"MD 2" (Davis, Hubert Eaves III)

5. "Katia Prelude" (Davis, Hubert Eaves III)
6. "Katia" (Davis, Hubert Eaves III)

MOONDOG MORE MOONDOG (+THE STORY OF MOONDOG) (1991) 320 KBPS

Free Image Hosting

Moondog's second Prestige (released in 1956) album solidified his standing as a rare breed: a musician whose work was both highly experimental and approachable by listeners without a taste for the avant-garde. That's what enabled him to make a living as a street musician in Manhattan, after all. On this album he produced a variety of wonderful shaking percussion sounds and rhythms with an oo (a triangular stringed instrument struck with a clave) and even "Ostrich Feathers Played on Drum" (as the title on one track reads). The percussion is sometimes backed by sparse, Asian-sounding melodies, and there are also unpredictable interludes of solo piano, street sounds, and an eight-minute "Moondog Monologue." One of the round-like vocal numbers, the minute-long and inexpressibly sad "All Is Loneliness," found an unexpected second life in the 1960s when it was covered by Big Brother & the Holding Company. The album is now available as part of a single-disc CD reissue that also includes the whole of his subsequent Prestige album, The Story of Moondog (1957).

PORTISHEAD ROSELAND NYC LIVE (1998) 320 KBPS

Free Image Hosting

Usually, groups wait until they've released at least three or four records before putting out a live album, but PNYC was too good an idea for Portishead to turn down. Recorded with a full orchestra on a cold, rainy day shortly after the release of their second record, Portishead, the project doubled as a live album and the soundtrack for a BBC documentary. In addition to being economical and perhaps lucrative, the disc demonstrates how sampled and sequenced music can be re-created in concert without losing any of the charm or dynamics of the original recordings. All it takes is a 22-piece string section, some horns, and a band whose tightness is exceeded only by its creativity. At times the performances on PNYC sound even more breathtaking and cinematic than Portishead's original recordings, as humming theremin, skittery scratching, and gliding strings mingle with stealthy guitar lines and sultry vocals. For Portishead, sour times seem like a distant memory.

THE RESIDENTS PETTING ZOO (2002) 320 KBPS

Free Image Hosting

It’s difficult to believe, but it seems that The Residents, that odd eyeball group known to go out of its way to dream up wacky songs, visuals and characters, has now produced a collection of ‘ear friendly’ tunes upon which to – well, I’m not sure What their point with this cd is actually, but as a Residents fan myself (something perhaps few would admit to), it’s great to have Any new release from these unknown guys/girls.
Consider this another Greatest Hits album, but more accessible than their previous GH try. You’ll recognize, and go away humming, tracks like ‘God’s Magic Finger’ (with its repetitious ‘it was the finger instead of the singer’). Another one I’ve personally never been able to forget (though I’ve tried!) is the sickly vocal from the memorable melody ‘Hanging By His Hair.’ Great and simple instrumentation on this.
Without going through their whole catalog, it’s hard to tell if there are any new tunes in this collection, but just the fact that the ordinary person can Listen to Everything on this 20 track, 57 minute disc is enough of a reason to put it together and ship it out. Especially now that The Residents have turned 30.
Yep, in 1972 they began. The interior of the cd booklet tells of their accomplishments: being on the Grammy nominee shortlist in 1980 but then just sharing a table with Donna Summer. Being a permanent part of NY’s Museum of Modern Art. Recording 40 one minute songs for The Commercial Album, then buying 40 1-minute spots to play the whole damn thing as commercials on a San Francisco radio station! (I love that!) Writing a ten hour score for the Hunters series on the Discovery Channel (release more of it, you bastards). And on and on.
Of course even though it’s More ear friendly, Petting Zoo probably isn’t melodic or rock/pop enough for the gist of civilization. Still, if you’ve ever wondered about the Eyeballs, here’s the perfect place to start.

1. Betty's Body
2. Wolverines
3. Kick A Picnic
4. God's Magic Finger.Road

Kid Loco - Kill Your Darlings [2001]

Free Image Hosting

1. Cocaine Diana
2. Lucy's Talking
3. Horsetown in Vain
4. Three Feet High Reefer
5. A Little Bit of Soul
6. I Can't Let It Happen to You - Kid Loco, Maus, J.
7. Gypsie Good Time
8. Here Come the Munchies
9. Going Round in Circles
10. I Want You

Multi-talented Parisian goes all acoustic on this album. The dubby, cinematic trip-hop he's known for is still lurking, but it's an album of more traditional 'real songs' even echoing Lou Reed and Serge Gainsbourg at times. Drifting acoustic strummings, folky, bluesy, riffs work well with the vocals and cheeky numbers like Three Feet High Reefer are quite fun but somehow it fails to live up to the concept - Kid Loco doing proper songs. Strummed acoustic guitar fills the Velvets-like reminiscing of "Cocaine Diana," followed by the Stones-ish swell of "Lucy's Talking," which is offset by blasts of tuba and trumpet. Spooky Gregorian chants intro the album's first truly trip-hop track, "Horsepower in Vain," which uses sitar and groaning brass to create an ominous night vision. The respite comes with the lilting Cubano strut of "Gypsie Good Time," the bittersweet "I Can't Let It Happen to You," and the bolting big beats of "Going 'Round in Circles." Merging despondent vocals with fleshy trip-hop, Kill Your Darlings attempts avant punk/trip-hop assimilation. Kudos for experimentation.

Kid Loco - The Italian Job [2007]

Free Image Hosting

Artist: Kid Loco & VA
Title: The Italian Job
Genre: Downtempo / Nu Jazz / Nu Funk / Electronic / Lo-Fi
Label: Temposphere / Right Tempo
Release Date: 21 / 03 / 2006
Quality: VBR kbps / 44100 / Joint-Stereo
Size: 84,4 Mb

The first set we've seen from Kid Loco in awhile -- and a nice mix of new music and older sounds from Italian film scores! The album's very nicely placed on the Temposphere arm of Easy Tempo -- as it features Loco remixes both of newer music from the former label, and some old soundtracks from the latter -- topped off with one or two Loco tracks of his own! The whole thing's somewhat understated -- never too gimmicky, beat-heavy, or over the top -- and although the music is from a range of different sources, the sound is more than unified enough to make the album feel like a Kid Loco record all the way through. Titles include "Crepuscolo Sul Mare" and "La Seduzione (2007 version)" by Kid Loco, "Sessomatto (Kid Loco sexamental mix)" by Armando Trovajoli, "Magic (new experience mix)" by Piero Piccioni, "Lady Magnolia (Belleville B-Boy mix)" by Piero Umiliani, "Fearing Much (Kid Loco's AM session mix)" by Stefano Torossi, "Per Il Disco Che Piu Amo (Kid Loco viva la Rockola mix)".
by I Maniaci Dei Dischi, and "Clapsoy (Cumbia Loco mix)" by Gak Sato

Defunkt - Defunkt (1980)

Free Image Hosting

One of the best NY bands ever!
Here is their first LP. It's key link between 70s funk and some of the avant jazz rock trends on the New York scene in the early 80s -- a group who seem to draw inspiration both from the sound of larger funk groups like Brass Construction and BT Express, and from the artier styles of the Ze Records generation of the time! Joseph Bowie's in the lead on vocals and trombone -- working here with Byron Bowie on saxes, Ronnie Burrage on drums, Melvin Gibbs on bass (only on this one, Kim Clarke will soon replace him), Charles Bobo Shaw on percussion, and both Kelvyn Bell and Martin Aubert on guitars. Given the avant roots of some of the players, it's tempting to read in some deeper theories to some of the album's tunes -- but honestly, the record's just an all-out grooving affair -- one that's going for a party funk approach, but which also throws in some touches from the post-disco and black rock scenes of the time.
Enjoy it!

Defunkt - Avoid the Funk: A Defunkt Anthology (1988)

Free Image Hosting

This is a serviceable look back at the first part of Defunkt's illustrious career, and though the label should have included more music, there's no arguing with the quality of the content. Included are "Make Them Dance," the lead track from the band's debut album (and still perhaps the creepiest song they've ever recorded) live versions of "Strangling Me With Your Love" and "In the Good Times", that squash the original studio versions like grapes, an extended 12" single mix of "Razor's Edge" (bandleader Joe Bowie's harrowing personal account of heroin addiction), and a great live version of Defunkt's self-titled theme song. The collection's title track is a sweaty, full-speed-ahead funk explosion, and the band's take on the O'Jays' "For the Love of Money" is lots of fun as well. These alternate takes and live versions will be enough to attract fans who already own the studio versions, and taken altogether this collection offers a useful overview for newcomers as well. Very recommended!
Enjoy it!

Ursula Rucker - Supa Sista (2001)

Free Image Hosting

Long term, prime exponent of the New York Slam poetry scene, Ursula Rucker has spent the last seven years, before this LP, working with some of the finest downtempo outfits including Silent Poets, Jazzanova or The Roots. Whilst her talents have embellished their work from 1994 onwards, it is former musical partners 4Hero, Alexkid and King Britt who have returned the gesture and collaborated with her on this beautiful fusion of hip hop, nu-jazz and soul.
Inspired by the social commentary of black female writers Zora Neale Hurston and Sonia Sanchez, Ursula Rucker has made it her mission to elevate the mind of hip hop and purify the art form. Like her previous work Supa Sista fixes Ursula's attentions firmly on the issues of sexuality, technology, women's rights, politics, education, evolution and spirituality.
Unlike so many working in the business she is an engaged woman who knows the true power of words. Levelling criticism at some of her male contemporaries for the effects that the violence and machismo in their lyrics has on the young, she purrs, "... formidable minds pay the price for your microphone mistakes. Change or be changed. Break the chains, don't be slaves".
Lazy beats with sweet soul soaked in Rhodes piano and double bass punctuation provide a wonderful, musical contrast to the often gritty subject matter. "Philadelphia Child" combines the city's trademark strings with tabla percussion whilst "What???" extends the variety to subtle drum and bass rhythms all of which compliment Ursula's vocals.
Charged with 'she-lectricity', hers is a silken delivery that, like Michael Franti's, demonstrates that a quiet word in the ear can speak volumes above the microphone rant. Ursula is one that would like to see hip hop become more responsible and more original. This is a woman who is both a poet and performer with important things to say and with her smoky, seductive lyricism it is all too easy to listen and absorb.
Enjoy it!

Fela Kuti - No Agreement (1977)

Free Image Hosting

No Agreement is a very long track that's got a super-catchy chorus, and some great jazzy playing by Africa 70, who are led at this point by Tony Allen...
Too many people have focused on the beautiful simplicity of the lyrics that make up the masterpiece No Agreement. And they would not be wrong. When Fela moans, My Mama talk, Your Papa talk, you know Baba 70 is feeling the pain for his people.
Our ignorance... our ignorance.
Yet it is Dog Eat Dog that even more of us have casually ignored simply because it is an instrumental. Dog Eat Dog is an absolute masterpiece. Playing this track for the first time in 10 odd years was like the feeling you get when you unwrap delicious smelling moin-moin from its fresh green leaves. It is pure class. It is Baba at his band-leader best.
It was recorded back in the days when he still had to vocally instruct Africa 70 but that notwithstanding it's still all about very tight musical arrangement. Improve the quality of your life and listen with intent.
Lester Bowie (from his brother's Defunkt) guests on the track, and Fela's on piano, sax tenor and alto.
Enjoy it!
