One of the best NY bands ever!
Here is their first LP. It's key link between 70s funk and some of the avant jazz rock trends on the New York scene in the early 80s -- a group who seem to draw inspiration both from the sound of larger funk groups like Brass Construction and BT Express, and from the artier styles of the Ze Records generation of the time! Joseph Bowie's in the lead on vocals and trombone -- working here with Byron Bowie on saxes, Ronnie Burrage on drums, Melvin Gibbs on bass (only on this one, Kim Clarke will soon replace him), Charles Bobo Shaw on percussion, and both Kelvyn Bell and Martin Aubert on guitars. Given the avant roots of some of the players, it's tempting to read in some deeper theories to some of the album's tunes -- but honestly, the record's just an all-out grooving affair -- one that's going for a party funk approach, but which also throws in some touches from the post-disco and black rock scenes of the time.
Enjoy it!
