4 heros unmistable natural sound which drips in funk, soul, jazz, and in parts eeriesness. Transcends musical boundaries. The fact that nothing else sounds like it grabs you, it has possibly infinite listening pleasure, you can be sure that no could make a better version than their tremendous vocal tracks which boast tight live instrumentation. For the ultimate in electronic beats / orchestral beats fusion. Sure its beem tried before, but as usual 4hero can really show how genres should sound, which can be only described as that 4hero sound. Lush, deep, an essential armchair 21st century classic. This is how modern, discerning dance music should be made today. 4 Hero managed to create a complex, colorful, sometimes overwhelming, universe of sounds & musics, that is totally satisfying for beatheads and admirers of quality cross-over jazzy music alike. If you are, or you've ever been, into quality black music you'll definitely love this work. If only more 'electronica' artists could make more music like this...

This is arguably the most cohesive and consistent album in the Cocteau Twins' entire output. Victorialand has been hailed as a classic by critics and fans alike, and although such terminology is thrown around all too often, this album is certainly more than worthy of such praise. Not only did this album define the 4AD sound they created even further, actually casted a huge influence on the whole New Age Scene and the Ambient Scene. Yes, it is actually that good, Enya owes a lot to the Cocteau, so does a whole lot more of New Age artists and so-called-alternative artists such as Lush, even legends like My Bloody Valentine admitted that Cocteau Twins was one of their major influence. The whole album is a dreamscape, it is subtle, gentle, otherworldly... Whatever! I know this is how many people rave about them, i do not wish to use all the words which means 'etheral' to describe their music. It is just beautiful and this beauty is unparrelled in the 90's, not even by themselves, I am sad to say.Nobody else even came this close to the word 'beautiful'. Music of the God? I am not sure, but I am quite sure God will be very pleased with their music.

16. Let The Music Set You Free (Bonus Track)

UK pressing of this 2008 release, their eighth studio album. The project sees Dr Alex Paterson back in the studio with former Orbster Youth, and Dreadzone's Tim Bran. It's a turn back to their old days , more humor and big bass lines!Drenched in fluid dub pulses, overactive layered samples and polymorphic grooves, The Dream, introduced by the Future Academy Of Noise, Rhythm And Gardening, captures the spirit of early Orb in a way not heard since Orblivion. The lush sonic tapestry that unfolds past the guitar motif in the opening sequence of the album has the welcoming feel of a treasured retreat. As the warm pulsating bass kicks in and vocal samples burst out from all sides, wrapped up around the main melody to the point of obliterating it, the Paterson/Youth machine appears fully back in motion. The anthemic Vuja De, featuring vocal contribution from Aki Omori, who previously contributed to Cydonia, hesitate for a moment between the rich soundscapes of its predecessor and progressive pop before settling for unadulterated electronic bliss. But it is in its middle section that The Dream really hits hard. Once the breezy formations of A Beautiful Day cleared, the album dives deeper into kaleidoscopic grooves, first with the greasy DDD (Dirty Disco Dub), then with the liquid The Truth Is…, which makes good use of a well known Orb hook . Then, it is the turn of the heavy dancehall-infused Mother Nature and ragga flavoured Lost & Found to assert the pair’s chemically fuelled dance floor credential. After that, the pair return to gentler territories and drop a series of beautiful hypnotic compositions, first on Katskills, where they combine ethnic percussions and vocal samples on ever changing patterned backdrops, then with the warm and uplifting High Noon. Codes and Orbisonia bring The Dream down to a gentle close.
Track 16 is a bonus track exclusively for this Japanese release.

Rucker’s garnered a reputation for unique poetry techniques and stage presence which were described as “strong, vulnerable, wounded and raging”.Rucker was invited to collaborate with numerous recording artists, and producers including King Britt, 4hero, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Wink and most notably The Roots and in numerous reviews, many critics proclaim the value of Rucker’s work with The Roots, 4 Hero and other groups.. Rucker’s emotion in her work and words, has led some critics to compare her to celebrated writers like Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni, describing them as “powerful”.Full of anger and passion expressed poetically to jazzy, soulful, simple backing tracks Ma’at Mama has, no doubt intentionally, a 60s beatnik vibe mixed in with the contemporary forwardness and controversy of today’s most probing rap acts. It’s a challenging listen, with lyrics to make you blush and think and music intended to fall in to the background but nonetheless it’s a rewarding one even if Ursula’s work is never going to make it on to your party mix tape."With " Ma’at Mama", Rucker shows a new level of maturity in her writing. It’s clear that she harnesses emotions in song to get through the daily grind. She explores socio-political point of race, class, culture, religion and gender, with steel-cut precision.

Matt Bianco is a UK band that was formed in 1983 and continues to exist to date. They are mainly known for their success in the mid 1980s and their jazzy, Latin-flavoured music. Popular during the mid 1980s in continental Europe, Matt Bianco epitomised the new jazz pop genre, that they shared with acts such as Working Week, Sade, Everything but the Girl, and The Style Council. The name suggests that Matt Bianco is a personal name, often referred to the main constant member, Mark Reilly, but Matt is in fact "a made up spy, a secret agent; we loved spy TV themes and film scores".Whose Side Are You On? was the first album by Matt Bianco (which featured Basia as lead vocalist on the song called "Half a Minute", one of the singles from the record).A true classic which sounds great almost twenty years after its first release. Full of the humour and fun of the earlier Matt Bianco work but much deeper and more textured, as well as more lyrically sophisticated. The title track is breezy pop, but it is the Latin inflections in "No No Never," "Half a Minute," and "Sneaking Out the Back Door" which make this album so intriguing and unique. I resist the term "fusion" in that it is a classification used to market and sell music, but I don't know how else to describe the synthesis of pop, jazz, salsa, samba, and electronic music which characterizes this work.

By taking traditional Indian instruments and musical structures and grafting them with Western techno production techniques, he's created a unique "brown-guy" niche in dance music previously populated by cornholes like Apache Indian. The man already has an impressive resume, leading the British Indian music collective Asian Dub Underground and having contributed to records by Björk and Massive Attack. He's also a talented composer in his own right.Singh doesn't just stick some sitars over a breakbeat-- the arrangements of tablas, strings, and frenzied backbeats is allowed full prominence here. Talvin Singh is a master at his craft, and it's evident on O.K. Elegant tabla rhythms mix superbly with electronic music to create a sublime ambient sound from the Asian underground.Rather, he exploits the inherent tendencies of "intelligent" drum-and-bass and classical Indian music (ethereal chords and complex time signatures respectively) to find a natural point of intersection between the two, thereby developing an entirely new style.OK echoes those notorious sessions of Miles' fusion era not only in its moments of brilliance and spirit of unedited improvisation, but also in the occasional self-indulgent mess. If you like ambient music, or Eastern-influenced electronica, you won't be sorry you bought this album.

Dreadzone's fourth album 'Sound' is a blend of dub, reggae, and breakbeats. The album returns to a more underground sound, but still continues to push their distinctive genre crossing style forward. It's a joyful combination of electric and dub-edged beats and has been designed to bring pleasure and inspire movement.Dreadzone have moved up - tempo somewhat with this dancey / dub creation but still manage to retain their own style of music as heard on Dread pon Sound and Believeing In It and Return of the Dread. Credit must be given to a band which continues to turn out out top sounds every release despite financial setbacks. The Dreadzone story is one that deserves closer examination…. Now in their tenth year the eclectic London outfit have used an ever changing line up to re-invent themselves and stay original. Associations with diverse bedfellows such as Creation, Finger Lickin, Virgin, Glastonbury and John Peel has resulted in a catalogue of great music that has won them many admirers.

Art Ensemble of Chicago - Les Stances a Sophie (1970)
Jazz | MP3 | 192kbps | 46,4MB

With this release Soul Jazz Records are reissuing a long lost album by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, one of the most important and radical Jazz groups to come out of the USA.

'Les Stances A Sophie' was recorded in Paris in 1970 and features the regular Art Ensemble members (Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Flavors) alongside the newly recruited drummer Don Moye and Fontella Bass on vocals and piano.

Fontella Bass (who was married to Lester Bowie) had a successful career as a soul singer ('Rescue Me' was her biggest hit in the sixties).

The addition of these two performers maybe in some way explains the uniqueness of this recording, especially 'Theme De Yoyo' . Vocals (and lyrics) alongside a constant drum and bass beat were new elements to the recorded music of the Art Ensemble at this time and this recording would appear to contradict the AEC's ambition for music to be heard and played simply as Sound with the freedom from accepted forms (ie Blues, Jazz etc) that were used to describe music.

Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler were the forerunners of Free Jazz (The New Jazz). Far from being simply a musical concept these musicians began to redefine the concept of the African-American musician in society. A new period of self-respect and spirituality among musicians was led by these musicians. Parallel to this, of course, was the Civil Rights Movement led by Martin Luther King and Malcolm X that was encouraging self-determination in every African-American.

The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians was formed in Chicago in 1965 by Muhal Richard Abrams with members including future AEC members Bowie, Jarman, Mitchell and Flavors as well others such as Anthony Braxton and Amina Claudine Myers. The AACM began promoting concerts, teaching music, Black history and offering spiritual guidance to youngsters in the community. This radicalisation of thought happened as the AACM musicians turned their back on the accepted path of a Jazz musician (as nightclub performer/entertainer) and began to look to a more African concept of the musician as part of a community both responsible to him or herself and fulfilling a spiritual role within that community.

Sun Ra had begun a similar concept with his Arkestra. Before moving to New York in 1960, Sun Ra had been based in Chicago in the second half of the 1950's. Many in the Arkestra lived together communally. The Arkestra existed to explore and play new musical horizons. No one in the commune was allowed to drink or take drugs and as Sun Ra explored Jazz, Science Fiction, Theatre and History in his music he also brought to the members of his Arkestra the importance of a sense of self-respect as a musician. The space left by Sun Ra when his Arkestra moved to New York was in many ways taken up by the AACM when it formed in 1965.

The Art Ensemble formed in 1968 out of the aforementioned members of the AACM. In June 1969 they headed for France where for the next two years they recorded an astonishing amount of music. Over fifteen albums were recorded for various labels such as BYG, Freedom, Nessa, Arista and EMI. They played at numerous festivals throughout Europe in this space of time before returning to America in 1972.

Les Stances A Sophie came about when the director of the film Moshe Misrahi befriended the Art Ensemble and asked them to record the soundtrack. During the filming the Art Ensemble were asked to appear in the film and for a few minutes in the film the group can be seen performing. (The photos on the cover are stills from this scene). The film remains, unfortunately, one of, if not the, most obscure French New Wave films ever to be made.

The fact that the music for the film was actually recorded before filming maybe accounts for one of the reasons that the music stands up on its own.

'Great Black Music - Ancient to Future' is how the Art Ensemble of Chicago came to describe their music. By managing to avoid the ideas of whether their music was Jazz or not the AEC were able to continue making music that could be as abstract as 'sound' or call upon the music of Africa or discuss Monteverdi at the same time as referring to the musical legacy of Duke Ellington or the Blues if they so chose. The Freedom that the AEC was employing was one that employed the right to enter into any area of music that they chose. It is in this way that 'Theme De Yoyo' makes sense.

Lester Bowie and Fontella Bass had met through Oliver Sain, who as a producer and bandleader, played with many Rhythm and Blues artists. Bowie and Bass were both playing with Sain before Fontella Bass started her solo career. 'Theme De YoYo' is where the Art Ensemble drew upon this Rhythm and Blues background to produce their interpretation of a Soul/R'n'B song with all the power of the AEC's collective musicianship on board. Bowie would occasionally return to this area of popular Black music during his career. For instance his version of The Flamingos Doo-Wop classic 'I Only Have Eyes For You' or his strange and humorous version of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller'.

'Les Stance A Sophie' was originally released on EMI France and later in the US on Nessa Records. Both editions have been out of print for many years and Soul Jazz Records are releasing it for the first time in England.

'Raise The Roof', Lizzy Parks' debut album on Tru Thoughts, is a euphoric, original and unforgettable introduction to one of the most talented and distinctive singers of the moment. Deftly produced by Ben 'Nostalgia 77' Lamdin and with rich, dramatic orchestration from Riaan Vosloo of the acclaimed Nostalgia 77 Octet, 'Raise The Roof' embodies Lizzy's fresh and modern personal twist on the singer-songwriter tradition, encompassing elements of various styles from retro jazz and boogie soul to ambient experimental music.
The expansive, multi-layered groove of the title track - out as a single on 11th August - has won radio play and support from Laurent Garnier, Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1) and many other DJs and tastemakers including Snowboy and Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz). The album is built on stunning live musicianship and sumptuous strings combined with a traditional approach to recording, using vintage instruments and microphones, and Lizzy's amazing voice full and vibrant at the front of the mix. Lizzy's distinctive style may be familiar to Nostalgia 77 fans as she and Lamdin have worked together several times over the years; notably their first collaboration was "The Hope Suite" which Lizzy co-wrote and sang, and which was nominated for Track of the Year in Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 Worldwide Awards.
Lizzy explores the full reaches of her beautiful voice with the perfect combination of skill, natural intuition and passion, to conjure up a new and refreshing experience with each song. A '60s rhythm and blues vibe kicks in with the second track, "Take Care", and the languid "Time" takes things in a whole different direction, with an eerie, ever-spinning sense of space that required a different mindset when recording: as Lizzy says, "Where I'd usually be stood belting it out a foot away from the mike, this track needed an intimacy and closeness that came from sitting quietly, eyes closed." 'Spring changes', arguably the 'jazziest' tune on the record, has a straightforward jazz structure and rhythm section, horn and voice line up. The rolling, bluesy lyrics talk about getting so stuck in the rat race that you stop noticing the real changes in life. Lizzy's version of the old R&B song "Seven day fool", which was famously recorded by Etta James in 1961 and describes the stereotype of a woman who'll do anything for her man, is followed swiftly by its antidote in the form of "All That", a super high-speed swing number with the line "I'm all that, and a bag of chips" - from the point of view of a woman who is too good for her man and tells him so. Nostalgia 77's influence is evident in the groove and horn riffs, and Lizzy pulls off some tongue-twistingly fast phrases with old-school charm and style. "Prayer", last here but definitely not least, is a virtuoso vocal journey through an orchestral landscape of great proportions, and is the B Side to the digital release of the debut single.
'Raise The Roof' marks the first time that Ben Lamdin has produced a solo LP for another artist and this record is set to bring Lizzy Parks' extraordinary talent into the limelight once and for all. Another rising star who recently featured alongside Lizzy on the latest Nostalgia 77 LP was then-little-known Beth Rowley (Universal) - just before she hit the big time with her top 10 debut album earlier this year.
An engaging and charismatic performer, Lizzy is the live chanteuse for the Nostalgia 77 Octet and has worked with many other great musicians including The Heritage Orchestra (Brownswood) and Chris Bowden (Ninja Tune).

An incredible set of funky soul from Lizzy Parks -- a UK singer who works partly in the deep funk territory of other artists on the Tru Thoughts label, but one who also has a more sophisticated side as well! Parks gets some great help here on the album from Benedic Lamdin and Riann Vosloo of the Nostalgia 77 camp -- the former on production, the latter on arrangements and bass work, both elements that really help the album shine! There's a rich, warm feel to the whole set -- but an undeniable groove too -- that blend of jazz and funk that you might find in the work of Elizabeth Shepherd, but with a different feel here, as the group's larger -- with some key horn parts, a bit of organ, and even some strings too. The sound is rich and full, but with a lean sensibility throughout -- and the set features titles that include "Raise The Roof", "Take Care", "Time", "Soul Bird", "Ode To St Cecile", "Forever & A Day", "Spring Changes", and "Seven Day Fool".

The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Phase Two ( 72 ^ 99mb)

Free Image Hosting

Jimmy Castor (born June 23, 1937) was a product of Harlem's Sugar Hill. A master of novelty/disco funk, saxophonist Jimmy Castor started as a doo wop singer in New York. Before even finishing junior high school, Jimmy Castor had written his first million seller for Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers called, “I Promise To Remember.” While furthering his education at New York City’s prestigious High School of Music & Art and later attending City College, Jimmy pursued his musical career by assembling a band of his own playing an assortment of major New York nightspots. He then wrote his second million seller, “Hey Leroy Your Mama’s Calling You,” on Mercury Records, through which a new flashy and spirited performer was introduced to the public

He formed the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972 and signed with RCA. Their first release, It's Just Begun, launched Castor's next phase with the song "Troglodyte (Cave Man)." It was a Top Ten R&B and pop smash. The follow up album, Phase Two adheres closely to the previous album's formula, right down to using an orchestral instrumental for its intro and epilogue. As a result, parts of it feel like a re-tread: the standout example of this problem is "Luther the Anthropoid (Ape Man)," which sports a nice groove but is a merely a thinly veiled rewrite of "Troglodyte." Despite some uninspired moments like this, Phase Two makes up for the problem with tight arrangements and an infectiously funky performance from the band. " "Say Leroy (The Creature From the Black Lagoon Is Your Father)" mixes Latin rock with frenzied funk-rock breaks to create a punchy tune that gave the band another pop hit and "When?" is an effective, fuzz guitar-drenched trip through the woes of ghetto life. The most unusual and interesting of these cuts is "Tribute to Jimi: Purple Haze/Foxy Lady," a novel medley that layers the vocal melody and lyrics of "Foxy Lady" over the tune of "Purple Haze." The album also does well in its softer moments: "Paradise" is a pleasantly harmonized ballad and the band's saxophone-led instrumental take on "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is quite enchanting.

Castor continued the trend in 1975 with "The Bertha Butt Boogie" and later recorded "E-Man Boogie," "King Kong," "Bom Bom," and "Amazon." The Castor band included keyboardist/trumpeter Gerry Thomas, bassist Doug Gibson, guitarist Harry Jensen, conga player Lenny Fridle, Jr., and drummer Bobby Manigault. Thomas left to join the Fatback band. Castor recorded as a solo performer from 1976 until 1988. He had one of his bigger hits in many years with a 1988 revival of "Love Makes a Woman," which paired him with disco diva Joyce Sims.

So far the '90s have been quiet years for the E-Man, but as a 1993 appearance at New York City's Sounds Of Brazil nightclub from the re-formed Jimmy Castor Bunch proved, Jimmy Castor, still youthful in his early fifties, still has plenty spark left in him. Meanwhile he's samples (from troglodyte and it's just begun) still have kept their appeal 35 years later...
