Vocally and instrumentally haunting, the album was unlike much else at the time. The textures were done in a free jazz style, but over that, Tim's most extreme grunting and wailing vocals to date. At times his voice sounds disturbed and depressed. Different from his first three albums, this personal album shared the same response as Lorca. Impervious to Buckley's avant-garde style, few of his fan base were aroused, with the majority disliking it. It included the more accessible "Song to the Siren", later covered on record by both This Mortal Coil and Robert Plant.

The band was put together eighteen months ago for a series of club nights at London's Cargo, and it was such a sensation that it looks like it's sticking around for a while yet. It's the brainchild of Chris Wheeler (producer and orchestra manager) and Jules Buckley (composer, orchestrator and conductor), who met while studying at the Guildhall School of Music. The prime mover was Wheeler, who quit the college early, bored and disaffected, after being accused by panel of professors of ignoring his “heritage.” He determined to put an orchestra together that would represent his own postmodern heritage, and that of the participating musicians.
Wheeler and Buckley's heritage seems to consist of equal parts jazz and jazz/rock, Twentieth Century European symphonic music, and a full-on daytime TV diet of Dempsey & Makepeace and Starsky & Hutch reruns.
The result is a blast of good fun. As the strings swell, the horns get staccato and the drum beats grow more urgent, you can visualise two inner city 'tecs, ducking and weaving towards the perps, calling out “Cover me!” as they go. There are mellower times too, once the case is closed.
If it sounds slight, it isn't. It's musicianly and it's got depth. Prokofiev and Stravinsky make themselves heard. And the soloists are strong—Chris Bowden (alto saxophone), Trevor Mires (trombone), Matt Calvert (guitar) and Ross Stanley (Fender Rhodes), in particular, are memorable.
A nu definition of 21st century jazz
Ben Lamdin has, albeit momentarily, abandoned the studio in favour of a live project that is altogether jazzier than you might expect. Recorded live at London's Jazz Café, Sevens & Eights is a welcome excursion into free jazz with four versions of tracks from his longplayer The Garden, covers of Graham Collier (Down Another Road) and Sun Ra (Watsua) records and an epic eighteen minute monster bonus track.
The changes of pace across the album make for a sullen and plodding listening experience one moment and a hectic and frenzied percussive meltdown the next. I use the word “experience” because the beauty of it is that it demands to be listened to, not thrown on in the background.
The build up of second track The Hunger, for example, begins with a simple piano solo, later becoming a scuzzy chaos at its peak halfway through, before it returns to more traditional brassy stuff toward the end. Indicating its breath-snatching beauty, there is an audible silence before the Jazz Café crowd burst into rapturous applaud.
The most inspiring thing about this album is that it reminds the listener of the continued relevance of live music and pure musicianship, even within the somewhat synthetic sphere of electronica. The feat of transferring tracks that Lamdin composed as a DJ with club-goers in mind to a live jazz performance with an audience comprised of both clubbers and jazz addicts is testament to the polished production values that Lamdin holds.
An absolute treat from start to finish – welcome to the sound of future jazz.

From perhaps 1977-1984, music had a preoccupation with the progress of society and technology and George Orwell was to blame. 1984 created an unconscious cultural deadline for the self-examination of Western society. Rock music sang about the spawning of mega-governments, punks assaulted fascism, pop stars noted a scaled cooling of compassion, jazz captured the spirit of robots. Suddenly, the word “modern” became an esteemed concept. It instructed us to accept the reality of imminent nuclear war, to be gaudy, to indulge, to ditch your 8-track player and buy a Betamax, to compete for every decibel of laughter, scrap of land, and shade of color. On Big Science instead of fostering these notions, Laurie Anderson observes them. Culled from fragments of her performance art opus, United States, Live, the songs from Big Science are compassionate and alarming. They describe the death musings of a commercial airline pilot over an intercom (“From the Sky”), the hubris of urban expansion (“Big Science”), the ignorance of the free-born (“Born, Never Asked”). The minimal music is loyal to her themes, melding organic brass and woodwinds with electronic beats, vibes, and melodic interludes. Most of the songs find Anderson, speaking over the music with her compelling pace and diction. “Cause I can see the future and it’s a place - about 70 miles east of here,” she utters in the simple, Cartesian, “Let X=X.” In this essence lies the source of Big Science’s magnificence. Here silence is used as artfully as words. There are empty slabs of pause, appealing to mechanistic processing and as well as warm-hearted salutations. The renowned “Oh Superman”, the album’s centerpiece, is complete immersion in this notion. Anderson reads her apocalyptic verse while a robot voice echoes. This interplay is chilling: like a mental duel between compassion and complete detachment. The “song” finds Anderson talking on the phone to what seems at first to be her mother then she gives pause, “OK who is this really?” And the haunting reply comes, slow over a subtle, sweet keyboard dirge, “I am the hand, the hand that takes.”The world Anderson describes, however, is far from minimal or bleak, for she also gives us texture. “Example #22” erupts with rhythm and jovial horns. German samples abound with Anderson bleating,“Honey you’re my one and only, So pay me what you owe me.” A bass and kick drum join the fray and suddenly the modern world is dancing. “It Tanga” jests at the connection gaps between men and women, women speaking open-ended and men repeating ageless Dylan, “Isn’t it just like a woman.” And that’s how the sparse chaos that’s presented by Big Science ends. You’ve been lured into a dream without realizing. Anderson has assaulted you with enough thought and silence and sound that you return society more enlightened but less certain of anything than when you left.As “O Superman” climaxes, Anderson reaches a resolution to this societal fray and I can’t help but think that Orwell would approve. It unfolds gradually in the telling, “Cause when love is gone, there’s always justice. And when justice is gone, there’s always force. And when force is gone, there’s always Mom. Hi Mom” It’s a poignant conclusion for certain, but when living in a world of compromise and miscommunication, it may be the best of all things.

Last night I was hanging out with Rich from Kill Ugly Radio and Daniel Flessas during Daniel's KBOO radio show, "The Outside World", when I came to the realization that I need to start doing podcasts on Eclectic Grooves. Around three a.m., I dragged myself home in that state somewhere between the realm of awareness and sleep. When I arrived at the apartment, I compiled this mix that I am featuring today. This mix features a wide variety of styles that seem to coalesce into a psychedelic space-rock contingent. Even though this is not a podcast, I plan on featuring podcasts here in the near future. I hope you enjoy the mix, and would love to hear what you guys think.

This compilation features 21 tracks from Gil Scott-Heron's first three long-players — Small Talk at 125th and Lenox (1970), Pieces of a Man (1971), and Free Will (1972) — all for producer Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label. Although Scott-Heron's seminal recordings consisted of his radical street poetry set to a bombast of conga accompaniment, he honed his prose into socially conscious R&B. This would heavily influence rap music nearly a decade prior to its fruition in the early '80s and 1990s. The original recitation version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" — which comes off as militant as the more familiar instrumentally accompanied reading — as well as the slice-of-life commentary title track "Small Talk at 125th and Lenox" appropriately represent Scott-Heron's first disc with an edgy political incorrectness taken directly from the soul of the American ghettos. Although the tone of his later work would become somewhat melodically tempered, the lyrical content remained in-your-face and wholly uncompromising. On the follow-up, Pieces of a Man, the artist is accompanied by a bevy of studio musicians and jazz heavies, including Ron Carter (bass), Hubert Laws (flute/saxophone), as well as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (drums). This would also begin Scott-Heron's dramatic and fruitful collaborative relationship with Brian Jackson (keyboards), which would spawn several landmark and otherwise socially conscious discs, including the apropos bicentennial release It's Your World (1976). Jackson's delicate interplay on "Did You Hear What They Said" and "Or Down You Fall" demonstrates the musical cohesion that would continue to develop between the two. Although this is a European import, as no domestic compilation of this material exists, Ghetto Style (1998) is a highly recommended primer.
William Burroughs & Kurt Cobain - The Priest They Called Him (1993)
"Fight tuberculosis, folks." Christmas Eve, an old junkie selling Christmas seals on North Park Street. The "Priest," they called him. "Fight tuberculosis, folks." People hurried by, gray shadows on a distant wall.
It was getting late and no money to score. He turned into a side street and the lake wind hit him like a knife. Cab stop just ahead under a streetlight.Boy got out with a suitcase. Thin kid in prep school clothes, familiar face, the Priest told himself, watching from the doorway.

Canned Heat is a blues-rock/boogie band that formed in Los Angeles in 1965. The group has been noted for its own interpretations of blues material as well as for efforts to promote the interest in this type of music and its original artists. It was launched by two blues enthusiasts, Alan Wilson and Bob Hite, who took the name from Tommy Johnson's 1928 Canned Heat Blues, a song about an alcoholic who has desperately turned to drinking Sterno, ally called "canned heat". After appearances at Monterey and Woodstock, at the end of the '60s the band had acquired worldwide notoriety with a lineup consisting of Bob Hite, vocals, Alan Wilson guitar, harmonica and vocals, Henry Vestine or Harvey Mandel on lead guitar, Larry Taylor on bass, and Adolfo ('Fito') de la Parra on drums. Since the early '70s numerous personnel changes have occurred and today, in the fifth decade of the band's existence, Fito de la Parra is the only original member from the glorious epoch. He has authored a book about the band's career. Larry Taylor, whose presence in the band has not been steady, is the other surviving member from the earliest lineups. Harvey Mandel, Walter Trout and Junior Watson are among the guitarists who gained notoriety for playing in later editions of the band. Alan Wilson sadly died in 1970, while Bob 'the bear' Hite passed away in 1981. (source : Wikipedia)

Iron Butterfly were formed in 1967 by church organist's son Doug Ingle. In the heart of the psychedelic era, the band had to be one of the major ones to come. That came rapidly with their third album named In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Thanks to the eponymous track, the album sold so much that the band was historically the first ever to recieve a platinum record ! Unfortunately, after that, the succes began to fall due to the too huge success of that song and the too fast starshipness. The band finally disbanded in 1971.
In 1975, former member Erik Brann reunited a band around him and called it Iron Butterfly, but the music wasn't what it used to be, psychedelism had real gone, and so had the main original inspiration of the band, Doug Ingle.
In the 80s and the 90s, the band shortly united for a few concerts but never came back for business, just to have fun together...
