THE PIRATE BAY, vodeća švedska web-stranica za razmenu medijskih datoteka, pokrenula je kampanju prikupljanja novca s ciljem da kupi vlastiti otok-državu i tako zaobidje zakone o autorskom pravu. Zasada je glavni kandidat Kneževina Sealand, samoproglašena država koju je 1967. na napuštenoj platformi u Sjevernom moru osnovao britanski major Paddy Roy Bates. Iako Sealand službeno nije priznat ni od jedne države, posjeduje vlastite poštanske marke, valutu i fudbalski klub, početkom godine je njegova vlada na celu s princom Michaelom Batesom ovlastila špansku tvrtku za nekretnine "ImmoNaranja" da iznajmi otok. Španjolci su procenili da se ostrvo može trajno iznajmiti za 504 milijuna funti. Web-stranica www.buysealand.com, pak, tvrdi da bi Sealand bio idealan dom za "The Pirate Bay", s obzirom na kombinaciju brzih internetskih veza na koje se ne odnose nikakvi zakoni o autorskom pravu. Svako ko je spreman uložiti novac u taj projekt će, prema navodima web-stranice, dobiti sealandsko državljanstvo. The Pirate Bay tvrdi da, ukoliko ne uspe kupiti Sealand, neće odustati, odnosno da ce pokušati kupiti neki drugi otok te ga proglasiti vlastitom samostalnom državom.
