R.I.P., Venus

My heart froze a little today when I read about Saturday's death of Mariska Veres. She was the lead singer of one of the best Euro-rock bands of the early 70s, The Shocking Blue, But, even more importantly, she was my first rock-star crush thanks to the video for Venus (YouTube link) that I saw on TV at an impressionable age. Not only did Mariska have an amazing voice, but something about her presence was just hypnotizing. No, it wasn't her breasts, thank you. I was actually more enthralled by her wild 60s hair. That and her Gypsy heritage - which is always pretty hot. (I was going to say unless you're Stevie Nicks, but, nah, I used to think she was pretty hot as well.)

A Rough guide to Belgrade“ (Kratki vodič kroz Beograd) je ime projekta u okviru kojeg će se beogradska aktuelna umetnička scena predstaviti u Amsterdamu od 13 do 15. dembra 2006. Ovaj projekat se odigrava u okviru, sada već tradicionalne, aktivnosti Doma omladine zvanoj „Grad gost“ u okviru koje se beogradski umetnci predstavljaju na značajnim evropskim gradovima i obratno. Tokom ovog gostovanja, u ključnim kulturnim centrima Amsterdama Melkvegu i De Baliju, naši umetnici i intelektualci predstaviće jednu drugačiju sliku o Beogradu, suprotnu onoj koja je godinama preovlađivala u zapadnim medijima. Cilj gosotovanja je pokazati da Beograd više nije prestonica šovinizma, ksenofobije i kriminala, već da je Beograd jedna značajna metropola, koja je rame uz rame sa bilo kojim evropskim gradom. U tom smislu, domaćini Melkveg i De Bali su izabrali grupe, autore i programe iz umetničkih „disciplina“ koje najviše korespondiraju sa evropskim tokovima: Darkwood Dub, Belgrade Yard Sound System, dj Evox-a, filmove „Sedam i po“ i „Sutra ujutru“, radove dokumentarista Mitića, Arsenijevića, Baljka i drugih, video umetnike u izboru Jelene Vesić, kao i sasvim neoubičajene vodiče kroz Beograd kakav je „Kafanski tribunal“ Jelice Novaković Lopušine i Svena Petersa. Takođe, biće organizovana i debata pod nazivom „The State of Belgrade“ koja će imati za cilj i da pruži jedan širi uvid u društvene okolnosti u kojima su navedeni umetnici radili i stvarali, i u kojoj će učestvovati Snježana Milivojević, Goran Svilanović, Veran Matić i drugi...

Minimal surroundings to say the least. Syd clearly shunned clutter and extravagant surroundings as much as he did being in the public eye.
