Sumokid scored a Crayola crayon maker at the toy trade today. I envision lots of broken and reformed crayons in our future. In fact, the second batch is cooking up as we speak. Alton Brown is cooking lentils. I haven't had good lentil soup in quite a while...I might have to do something about that in the near future as well.
Well, maybe not the future, but my new 19" widescreen LCD computer monitor is so bright I need shades. And yes, the new monitor came with an all new PC to keep it company, not to mention a sorely needed printer/copier/scanner which will make all those homeschool projects much easier. Need to futz more with the monitor settings....Yesterday Sumokid and I stopped in at Krispy Kreme doughnuts for a much needed pick-me-up. They were making doughnuts while we were there, and Sumokid's cuteness scored us free hot doughnuts. The fellow even gave her one of the new heart-shaped Valentine's Day doughnuts. If you've never had a hot Krispy Kreme, I really am sorry.Today we're off to turn in our girl scout cookie order, visit the library, take care of some virtual assistant work...the usual stuff for a Tuesday.
As a writer, you are cautioned against using overly descriptive words in place of the simple "said." In all the time I've been reading, in all the millions of pages I've read, I've never before last night come across what is always given as the worst possible example of this offense:"'Minister!' ejaculated Rufus. 'He's not a minister, is he?'"Worse yet: it was in the children's book I was reading to Sumokid!ETA: The husband says I just don't read books that are old enough, that that was common in books from the 19th century. Still, the book in question was written in the 1940s. You'd think the author might have chosen something else. And in other news, you know those claw machines that entice you to spend lots of money in fifty cent increments to get a stuffed toy that is barely worth what you've paid? We usually allow Sumokid to drop a dollar or so in the one in the WalMart entrance. Yesterday I put in fifty cents and came out with three toys in a single grab. Never seen that happen before.
Sumokid received a doll sling as a Christmas present. Attached to the sling was a business card with this warning: "This sling is intended for doll use only and is not made for holding a real baby (or other animal)."

I am slithering from my sick bed to report that Christmas was lovely, Sumokid is recovering from strep throat, Husband is recovering from laser surgery done to halt retinal hemorrhages in his eyes, and that I have had the full-blown fever-chills-shakes-body aches flu. I have slightly improved from the "OMG I'm going to die" stage, to the "OMG I'm so tired of being sick" stage. ::hacks::Hhmmm...so that's what a lung looks like.::crawls back to bed::
"It's either the camping episode of The Upside Down Show or necromancy; take your pick. I choose necromancy." --Sumokid(The necromancy in question is the next chapter of Which Witch?, our current bedtime story.)
"No sweetie. You wreak havoc. Chaos ensues." Me to Sumokid.

...well, not much of anything really. We've all had nasty nasty colds and allergy problems. Seems everyone I know is either sick or getting over being sick. We've certainly had it better than some folks I know though, so I won't complain too much.Husband and I celebrated the 10th anniversary of the day we met, the 10th anniversary of our first date (dinner with DBH and MH at a Japanese restaurant for my birthday) and our 9th wedding anniversary. Those last two were on the same day, btw. I celebrated the anniversary of my birth. jediclampett reminded me that in 3 short years I'll be eligible to join AARP. Other friends of ours reminded him that such comments might limit his chances of being around long enough to be eligible for AARP himself.Halloween was fun. Sumokid was a dragon. We still have leftover candy, mostly tootsie rolls.Went to some Girl Scout meetings, some homeschool activities, some playdates, had school, the usual stuff. Saw the botanical gardens in Athens last weekend while the leaves were still gorgeous and before the rains of last week. The maple outside our backdoor has been especially lovely this year, all yellow gold. Got a new TV after an accident involving our old one, Sumokid and some water. Blessedly, the only injury was to the TV. I can't believe it's Thanksgiving week already. Time she do fly. We'll be feasting here at home, then visiting some out of state relatives for a few days while celebrating Sumokid's birthday.I'm reading The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles to Sumokid as a bedtime story. Not a book I had heard of before running across it on the library shelves, despite its famous author.Last night I finished reading Endymion Spring, which I thought was a good young adult book and first novel. I mean really, how often do Faust and Gutenburg come up in young adult fiction? I also read, in one sitting, Water for Elephants. Very good book. Wish I could remember where I saw the rec for it because I'd like more, please. I'll definitely check out this author's other books. And yes, I did actually read an adult novel that was not a romantic comedy or a paranormal pr0n involving vampires, werewolves, or some other magical and/or undead characters. I realized last night that I'm never really going to read "The Great Books." I don't see myself reading Les Miserables, or War and Peace, for example. And you know what? I'm OK with that. I used to want to read "The Great Books," or perhaps more precisely I wanted to want to read "The Great Books." Maybe I had enough literature as education earning my English degree, maybe I cut my reading teeth on one too many Little Golden Books and not enough classic children's tales, who's to say? But I read now for fun, and only want a little challenge, enough to keep it interesting, not to make me work for it. I've realized life brings enough challenges and fun ought to be fun, not work. And in other news, I've learned how to knit cable stitches.
Happy Birthday to crevette! One of the funniest, brightest, most wonderful women I know. And in my circle of friends, that's really saying something.Happy Anniversary this month to psubrat!
Did you know that a wok is a perfect vessel for cooking popcorn? Neither did we until we wanted to try Alton Brown's popcorn recipe. We don't have a large stainless steel mixing bowl, so husband used our wok instead (one of the standard steel varieties, not an electric wok). Turns out the wok concentrates the heat at the bottom, allowing the popped kernels to rise and ensuring that virtually everything pops. Amazing. Leave it to AB to improve on something as simple as popcorn.
Say what you want about chicken noodle, but as far as I'm concerned, there is nothing better when you have a cold than Hot and Sour soup. And I had myself some for lunch.Senseo owns me. Yes, I got one of the free coffee makers. Yes, I love it. Yes, I would say that even if it hadn't been free. Yes, I'm going to get some of the eco pod things in the next few weeks. Yes, I am going to make another cup now as a matter of fact. The weather is nice here. Cool and threatening to rain any minute. Yesterday was just glorious. I had to drive up to my mom's to get some boxes out of the garage, and the drive home--it was a sun warmed car, a cool breeze, a golden afternoon with the leaves just beginning to show hints of gold and red, good rock on the radio, the wind in my hair, and in a flash, I was 18, back in college, driving in the moutains in Jimmy Trappini's Trans-Am with the T tops out.
