As a writer, you are cautioned against using overly descriptive words in place of the simple "said." In all the time I've been reading, in all the millions of pages I've read, I've never before last night come across what is always given as the worst possible example of this offense:"'Minister!' ejaculated Rufus. 'He's not a minister, is he?'"Worse yet: it was in the children's book I was reading to Sumokid!ETA: The husband says I just don't read books that are old enough, that that was common in books from the 19th century. Still, the book in question was written in the 1940s. You'd think the author might have chosen something else. And in other news, you know those claw machines that entice you to spend lots of money in fifty cent increments to get a stuffed toy that is barely worth what you've paid? We usually allow Sumokid to drop a dollar or so in the one in the WalMart entrance. Yesterday I put in fifty cents and came out with three toys in a single grab. Never seen that happen before.
