Don't Air Your Dirty Laundry

Don't Air Your Dirty Laundry

I took this photo 6 years ago in the Abruzzo region of Italy, I have scanned my pic as this was before I had digital. I wanted YOU to see how I remembered the area and the people that I hold dear to my heart.

I have also included a shortened version of a story that I wrote for a travel magazine a few years ago that also included this old photo.

" Don't Air Your Dirty Laundry"
by Deb V.

After my daughter became engaged to an Italian AF pilot during his training in the U.S., she and I planned an extended stay to Italy. Italian homemaking would mean living a culture that was less dependent on household conveniences such as a dishwasher, microwave or a clothes dryer. We found an apartment in a small town close to her fiance's AF base. Using the wash machine to do our laundry was easy enough but drying our clothes meant hanging our wet garments on a drying-rack on the little balcony. We didn’t like the idea of our Italian neighbors seeing our “unmentionables” so we hung them to the back of the drying-rack. On one of our morning strolls, to the open market as we got to the main street we both gasped at the sight that blocked our path. There in the middle of the sidewalk, framed by her doorway was an old woman, seated in a dining room chair. Above her hung a clothes-pinned line with only big white GRANNY UNDERWEAR waving like a billowing banner in the breeze! We had to assume that MODESTY had been thrown out like dirty wash water and that the saying, “don’t air your dirty (or CLEAN) laundry in public” was not relevant in Italy!

kitchen

kitchen

I stove use to go here, and will again once the remodel is done... but for now the dryer and microwave live here. Although the washing machine in the previous picture is a two in one (washer/dryer), it isn't as great as it sounds. It doesn't actually dry clothes, rather, it puts perment wrinkels in them.

Key Lime Cupcakes w/ White Chocolate Frosting

Key Lime Cupcakes w/ White Chocolate Frosting

Hi all! I've taken up baking. I will be posting my baking successes and their recipes. :)

I got this recipe from Country Living Magazine, but its a big vague so I kind of improvised. Also it was pretty easy for me to get Key Limes since I live in South FL, but Persian Limes are basically interchangeable and probably much easier to juice.
This recipe makes about 16 large cupcakes.

CUPCAKES
3/4 cup(s) butter, softened
1 3/4 cup(s) sugar
2 tablespoon(s) key lime zest, about 1 lime
3 whole(s) eggs
1/4 cup(s) key lime juice, fresh
3 cup(s) cake flour
1 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1 1/2 cup(s) buttermilk

WHITE CHOCOLATE FROSTING
6 block(s) white chocolate baking squares, 1 ounce each
1/2 cup(s) heavy whipping cream
3/4 cup(s) butter, softened
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
5 cup(s) confectioner's sugar
3 Crushed Graham Crackers

1. Preheat oven to 340 degrees. Grease and flour cupcake tins.

2. In medium bowl, combine cake flour and baking soda; sift. Gradually add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.

3. Pour evenly into prepared pans, and bake for 15 -- 18 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted comes out clean. Let cool completely.

4. For frosting: combine chocolate and cream in medium bowl by microwaving on high for 30 second intervals, stirring between each until chocolate is melted and smooth (about 1 1/2 minutes total.) Let cool completely. I added a bit of green food coloring to give it that Key Lime Pie color then topped it off with the crushed graham crackers. :)

004 ~ The Clean Freaks

004 ~ The Clean Freaks

So this morning my mom came over around 6:00 AM and shortly after we headed to Steve's old apartment to clean the kitchen and the bathroom-- and no offense Steve, but it was awful. After only a few hours it's looking a million times better! My clothes are all bleach stained though :( Luckily I didn't wear anything I was too attached to!

Now the old apartment is almost completely clean-- and the new one is almost completely unpacked. Pretty impressive for barely four days in.

Life. Is. Good.

The Cleaner

Meet Jonathan Quinn: a freelance operative with a take-no-prisoners style and the heart of a loner. His job? Professional “cleaner.” Nothing too violent, just disposing of bodies, doing a little cleanup if necessary. But in Brett Battles’s electrifying debut novel, Quinn’s latest assignment will change everything, igniting a harrowing journey of violence, betrayal, and revenge.

The job seemed simple enough: investigating a suspicious case of arson. But when a dead body turns up where it doesn’t belong–and Quinn’s handlers at “the Office” turn strangely silent–he knows he’s in over his head. With only a handful of clues, Quinn scrambles for cover, struggling to find out why someone wants him dead . . . and if it’s linked to a larger attempt to wipe out the Office.

The Cleaner

Quinn’s only hope may be Orlando, a woman from his past who’s reluctant to help but who may hold the key to solving the case. Suddenly the two are prying into old crimes, crisscrossing continents, struggling to stay alive long enough to unbury the truth. But as the hunt intensifies, Quinn is stunned by what he uncovers: a chilling secret . . . and a brilliantly orchestrated conspiracy–with an almost unimaginable goal.

Furiously paced, filled with superbly drawn characters and pitch-perfect dialogue, The Cleaner puts a powerful twist on all our expectations as it confirms Brett Battles’s place as one of the most exciting new talents in suspense fiction today.

Pull handle way out

I've driven down this alley 10,000 times over the years and just noticed this today. An old natural gas valve (no longer functional) on the rear wall of the Putnam Building in Davenport,IA.

The patent on it is well over 100 years old and I see that it was manufactured by the Sieben Fire & Gas Appliance Company of Kansas City,MO. (they spelled my last name the wrong way...lol)

I like the technology of this---to shut off gas, pull handle way out.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?

"HOW MANY SEEDs in a pumpkin?" Mr. Tiffin asks his class as they gather around the big, medium, and small pumpkins on his desk. Robert, the biggest kid, guesses that the largest one has a million seeds; Elinor, sounding like she knows what she's talking about, guesses the medium one has 500 seeds; and Anna, who likes even numbers better than odd ones, guesses that the little one has 22. Charlie, the smallest boy in the class, doesn't have a guess. Counting pumpkin seeds is messy business, but once the slimy job is done, to everyone's surprise, the smallest pumpkin has the most seeds! As Charlie happily es, "Small things have a lot going on inside of them."

KOKC (Formerly KOMA) 1520

KOKC (Formerly KOMA) 1520

These three towers are an amazing source for a powerful 50,000 watt signal. The towers may reside at 35.333450° -97.505217°, 35.333276° -97.504729° and 35.333092° -97.504224° respectively but their signal can be heard well over 1,000 miles away. My dad use to work at this station back in the 1960's when it was KOMA AM.

I remember on a freakish couple of days in 1996 when I was in Fairbanks, Alaska, or more specifically at the Moose Creek Apartments located... 64.715154° -147.166405° when I received KOMA. It was dark as it usually is during the winter and I was sitting int he car scanning across the band when I jokingly tuned across 1520 KHz and heard some 1950's music. I was intrigued and left it on there. To my surprise I heard them discussing a Sock Hop program on Oklahoma City's 1520...K-O-M-A.

I was so excited that I ran into the house and got my wife to come out to the car. How unbelievable to think I was receiving a radio station more than 3,000 miles away AND it was a hometown station at that. I thought about contacting them and telling them that I was hearing them in Alaska but I did not think they would believe me. I have told many people about it and they nodded their heads in agreement but I am skeptical they believed me either.

The amazing thing about it is that not only was this more than 3,000 miles away but there is another 50,000 watt station in Portland, Oregon (KGDD). I use to live in Tucson, and Phoenix, Arizona and was able to receive KOMA/KOKC 365 days a year at night. Their signal was very strong and very dependable. KOKC is now a 24 hour news station and can heard nearly to the Canadian Border to the North and to the Pacific Coast to the West. They broadcast on the center tower during the day and then go on all three at night to produce their directional signal. As a designated clear channel station they are protected from other stations impeding on their signal. Just as their is a station in the Buffalo, New York station called WWKB on the same frequency that is protected from KOKC. This is why they require the directional signal at night.

The powerful signal is attenuated during the day by an invisible "D" layer of the ionosphere that is energized when the sun shines. This layer absorbs most signals below 10 MHz preventing them from reaching the "F" layer that causes famous radio "skip". The term skip means that radio signals are refracted or bent as they hit the "F" layer of the ionosphere causing the signal to be bent back to the earth and the signal is received at great distances. The 50,000 watt signal can easily reach this much desired "F" layer during the evening when the lower level "D" layer virtually disappears with the absence of the sun.

This is a phenomenon that ham radio operators enjoy on high frequency (HF) operation. Since the HF band is in the 2 MHz to 30 MHz shortwave spectrum it is ideal for this skip. These three towers are very prominent if you approach Oklahoma City from the South on Interstate 35 (I-35). The towers are actually in the city limits of Moore, Oklahoma but when they were built many years ago this area was rural. Now the towers are in a densely populated area with houses all around them. The above photo was taken from a cemetery on the East side as the sun was rising behind me.

The station's studios are in North Oklahoma City and their audio is transmitted to these towers and transmitter via a studio to transmission link (STL) using microwave.

How many more times...?

How many more times...?

“... we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.”

Morningware HO1200M-WOR Infrared Halogen Oven

Morningware HO1200M-WOR Infrared Halogen Oven

The Morningware Infrared Halogen produces results that will amaze you and is the best cooking combination available on the market today. The patented process uses conduction, convection, halogen and infrared rays. Cooks food quickly and easily while retaining moisture, tenderness, and still browning and crisping without adding additional fats or oils. The Infrared waves create a grease release and starts immediately to liquefy the naturally occurring fats in foods, along with calories, drip into the glass drip tray, leaving food healthier and amazingly tender and tasty. Foods cook in half the time, from fresh or frozen, without any preheating or defrosting. The speed of the infrared heating eliminates the chance of harmful bacteria to grow as in a normal defrosting. Our 1200-watt halogen heating element provides a bright light for viewing the cooking process and uses up to 85-percent less energy than your regular oven while promoting a healthier food preparation with the smallest carbon footprint in its oven class. The oven is smokeless, odorless and won't heat up your kitchen. Anything you would cook in your regular oven can be prepared in our oven. You can bake, broil, roast, barbeque, grill, and dehydrate. It’s great for re-heating leftovers and for fast preparation of purchased frozen meals. Our glass tray along with the plastic base provide for a true and elegant Cook and Serve oven to table feature. Oven comes with a 1-inch to 3-inch reversible stainless steel rack and a dome holder. A quick reference cooking chart, owner’s manual, recipe booklet, and a 1-year limited warranty. 166: My Awesome Tie

166: My Awesome Tie

August 6, 2010
Okay, I absolutely LOVE this tie. I got it about a month ago at Kohl's for 10$ off the clearance rack. It even came with a tie clip. I. LOVE. THIS. TIE. And I've had no reason to wear a tie since buying it because I am unemployed and have nothing fancy on the agenda. Today, though, I decided to do a bunch of waist up self portraits just so I could wear this tie. Then, the electricity half-went-out. What, you may ask, does that mean?

The dryer worked, but the washer (mid-load, mind you) did not. The toaster, oven, coffee maker, microwave, and lights were out in the kitchen, but the fridge stayed on. The lights in the dining room were out, but one of four outlets worked. Everything upstairs was out except for one outlet in the bathroom. The half-bath worked fine, but the laundry room lights were out. Every outlet in the living room worked fine, but the lights connected to the switch wouldn't turn on. NO...CENTRAL...AIR...CONDITIONING

So, I could watch TV, but I couldn't cook or finish my laundry... And the internet still worked... thank God.

To make a long story about a shitty day short, I didn't break anything or overload the breakers. The connections outside out house were shitty, so LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) had to come fix them. I was without AC for about 5 hours. I didn't realize how spoiled I am until today. I love (LOVE LOVE LOVE) my central AC. So...Much...SO MUCH!

When I hear science, technology and society I think development and worthwhile progress. My picture depicts just that as it clearly shows that in this modern day and age where stoves an electrical tops take prevalence we still know how to do without. My picture is part of modern history a simple a€?fire grilla€ set up. Its well known that from this a€?stovea€ you get a different flavor to the food prepared over it (smoked style), but thata€™s the beauty. There may not be a knob to lower the intensity of the heat but either reducing the content of burning material or simply dousing it a bit works just as well. I believe that this is one of the most intricate parts of our scientific past, present and future which has the world of technology where cooking is concerned revolutionized. Whether it is an electrical or gas stove/oven, this piece of practical equipment will never die. It has given birth to the toaster, modern barbeque grill, even microwave oven, along with other methods of cookery. I call it Stove Of Yesterday and that it is also of today, tomorrow and so ona€¦ Society has greatly benefitted from the mastermind behind this equipment and without a doubt we cannot imagine living today without having what we know as a stove around.

I Don't Know How She Does It: The Life of Kate Reddy, Working Mother

Delightfully smart and heartbreakingly poignant, Allison Pearson’s smash debut novel has exploded onto bestseller lists as “The national anthem for working mothers.” Hedge-fund manager, wife, and mother of two, Kate Reddy manages to juggle nine currencies in five time zones and keep in step with the Teletubbies. But when she finds herself awake at 1:37 a.m. in a panic over the need to produce a homemade pie for her daughter’s school, she has to admit her life has become unrecognizable. With panache, wisdom, and uproarious wit, I Don’t Know How She Does It brilliantly dramatizes the dilemma of every working mom.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Allison Pearson's debut novel, I Don't Know How She Does It, is a rare and beautiful hybrid: a devastatingly funny novel that's also a compelling fictional world. You want to climb inside this book and inhabit it. However, you might find it pretty messy once you're in there. Narrator Kate Reddy is the manager of a hedge fund and mother of two small children. The book opens with an emblematic scene as Kate "distresses" a store-bought mince pie to make it appear homemade. Her days are measured in increments of minutes and even seconds; her fund stays organized but her house and family are falling apart. The book is a pearly string of great lines. Here's Kate on lack of sleep: "They're right to call it a broken night.... You crawl back to bed and you lie there trying to do the jigsaw of sleep with half the pieces missing." On baby boys: "A mother of a one-year-old son is a movie star in a world without critics." On subtle office dynamics:
The women in the offices of EMF [Kate's firm] don't tend to display pictures of their kids. The higher they go up the ladder, the fewer the photographs. If a man has pictures of kids on his desk, it enhances his humanity; if a woman has them it decreases hers. Why? Because he's not supposed to be home with the children; she is.
There's inherent drama here: Kate is wildly appealing, and we want things to work out for her. In the end, the book isn't a just collection of clever lines on the theme of working motherhood; it's a real, rich novel about a character we come to cherish. --Claire Dederer

Westbend Bun Warmer/Egg Poacher

I have one of these I bought years ago. It is strictly a bun warmer. Never have I ever come across one that is also an egg poacher. In all of my times shopping for vintage aluminum on ebay have I come across one that has this part. It is in pristine condition as well and looks as though it was hardly used, if ever.

Egg Poacher

Egg Poacher

This poached egg cooker had mixed results from crate and barrel. It's hard to get the cooked egg off it in the dish washer and it doesn't work on regular power in the microwave or on 1/2 power like they say either. At half power it doesnt really cook, at full power it explodes.

Primula Glass Stovetop Tea Pot with Infuser

Primula Glass Stovetop Tea Pot with Infuser

This glass teapot with a capacity of 40 ounces turns the act of brewing tea into an artistic presentation. Loose tea leaves are placed into the glass infuser, hot water is added, and when the water reaches the desired color or strength, the infuser is lifted out along with all the loose leaves. A glass lid keeps the heat in, and the graceful loop handle makes the pot easy to pour. Tea flowers look beautiful in the pot, too, and work best without the infuser. Made of lightweight yet laboratory-strength borosilicate glass, the teapot won't stain and is safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher. For the tea drinker, Primula also sells a glass tea-making mug and packets of tea flowers, which are AA-grade green tea leaves and actual dried flowers that are hand-sewn into tight balls by artisans in China. After a tea flower ball is place in hot water, it will slowly sink to the bottom and unfurl into full "bloom." Some even have two different kinds of flowers that unfurl into a colorful spectacle, adding fragrance and flavor to the tea.

Day Thirty Four

Day Thirty Four

Twas a weird morning this morn. I crawled into the spare bed just before 4 o'clock and she woke up at 6. However she was still really tired. She was rubbing her face and yawning and laying her head down but then would get up. I ended up grudgingly getting out of bed close to 7 but when she plopped down on the pillow on the floor and started to doze we went back to bed. Brandi began calling the house probably around 8, she woke me up with the first two calls but not the baby. When she called the third time I knew she was probably getting worried so I tried to sneak out of bed to answer the phone. I was not sneaky enough. So we got up and called Brandi back while I prepared breakfast.

I was supposed to give Theo some money for play tickets last night at gaming but totally forgot so there was a plan to potentially head over to his workplace and drop it off but he never called to let me know he got there. We did go for a short walk. I was planning on getting some elastic hair ties, the little rubber ones. They're good for keeping stacks of cards together for gaming and such but while I was out totally forgot about it.

I also had to mail something away for a minis game trade I had going on. Hopefully in a couple weeks or so I'll get a rare figure in return. It's always weird trading through the mail and hoping the person on the other end is not an asshat.

Ooooh and I got another great $6 DVD purchase from HMV: Yo yo Girl Cop. It looks to be a crazy Japanese film about a female cop who wields a deadly yo yo. I'll have to watch it during Isobel's nap times.

For lunch I decided to try out this weird microwavable meal I found at IGA. It was turkey. The weirdest thing about it is that it wasn't in the freezer aisle. It was just on a shelf...it weirded me out so much I had to try it. What kind of turkey is okay to sell if it's on a room temperature shelf? Curiosity got the better of me. However it was pretty damn foul. Two bites later and it was nearly falling apart in the bowl I dumped it into. And it tasted like some weird cardboardy thing. I threw it out and had burrito's instead. Also I had a big glass of iced tea (sweet tea (heh I wrote teat first) for any American's in the audience). I was always surprised that Brandi has never had homemade iced tea. Other people's iced tea always freaked me out as a child. Iced tea for me is when you brew up a large jug of orange pekoe tea, toss in a pile of sugar and throw it in the fridge for a day. When I'd go over to other kids houses and have that powdered crap they called iced tea I'd be totally put off.

Isobel's been really tired lately. Not that I'm complaining since she's napping nearly a third of the time we're at home and it means I get to do some daddy things but it's strange to see her schedule change so rapidly. Now if only she'd get the whole sleeping through the night thing going so Brandi gets some good long sleeps in.

Choucroute

Choucroute

Choucroute garnie
(French for dressed sauerkraut; choucroute is a phonologically frenchified form of Alsatian Surkrut, c.f. German Sauerkraut) is a famous Alsatian recipe for preparing sauerkraut with sausages and other salted meats and charcuterie, and often potatoes.

Although sauerkraut is a traditionally German and Eastern European dish, the French annexation of Alsace and Lorraine following the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 brought this dish to the attention of French chefs and it has since been widely adopted in France.

In principle, there is no fixed recipe for this dish - any preparation of hot sauerkraut with meat and potatoes could qualify - but in practice there are certain traditions, favourite recipes, and stereotypical garnishes that are more easily called choucroute garnie than others. Traditional recipes call for three types of sausage: Frankfurt sausages, Strasbourg sausages, and Montbeliard sausages. Fatty, inexpensive or salted cuts of pork also often form a part of choucroute garnie, including ham hocks, pork knuckles and shoulders, back bacon and slices of salt pork. Other recipes call for fish or goose meat, but this is far less typical.

The sauerkraut itself is usually heated with a glass of Riesling or other dry white wines or stock, and goose or pork fat. In some recipes, it may also be cooked with chopped onion and sliced apples. Food writer Jeffrey Steingarten attempted to catalogue the composition of an authentic recipe in 1989. He writes that every traditional recipe includes black peppercorns, cloves, garlic, juniper berries, onions, and potatoes; most include bay leaves and wine.

Choucroute garnie is available throughout France in canned or microwavable ready-to-eat form.

Whirlpool PUR 4396508 Side-by-Side Refrigerator Water Filter, Quarter-Turn, Non-Cyst, 1-Pack

Side By Side Water Filter, Used For Whirlpool Side By Side Refrigerators With Turn Access Through The Front Base Grille, Reduces Chlorine Taste & Odor, Particulates, Lead, Mercury & More, Retains Beneficial Fluoride, NSF Certified, Replace Your Filter Every 6 Months.

Make sure the water and ice from your refrigerator is as clean and fresh tasting as possible by replacing its water filter. This Whirlpool water filter is used in Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Maytag side-by-side refrigerators with quarter-turn filter access in the base grille.
Whirlpool 4396508
Effective filtering
It's NSF-certified to reduce particulates (class II), lead, mercury, and more. (The contaminants or other substances removed or reduced by this water filter are not necessarily in all users' water.) While it effectively removes contaminants from your water and ice, this filter also lowers the taste and odor of chlorine while retaining beneficial fluoride.
Note that this water filter does not reduce the amount of cysts in your water.
For the highest quality water and ice, your refrigerator's water filter needs to be changed over a period of time as its effectiveness at cleaning the water is reduced. For optimal results, you should replace this refrigerator water filter every 6 months to ensure clean, safe drinking water and ice.
Your refrigerator will even remind you when to change its filter, turning on an indicator light found near the water dispenser. Changing the filter is easy--just locate the old filter, turn the filter one-quarter of a turn to remove and replace with the new filter.
This model (4396508) can be used to replace the following models of water filter:
4396547
4396163
4392857
4396919

Replacing Your Water Filter
For side-by-side refrigerators with quarter-turn filter access in the base grille, follow these instructions for replacing your filter:
Rotate the cap counterclockwise to a vertical position, then pull.
Remove the filter cap by sliding it right or left. Set aside cap. Discard old filter.
Remove the packaging and O-ring covers from the new filter. Slide the filter cap back onto the end. Align the ridge on the filter with the ridge on the cap to make certain it is centered.
Hold the assembled cap and filter unit with the handle in the vertical position and push the new filter cartridge into the opening of the base grille until it stops. Rotate the cartridge cap clockwise to a horizontal position.
Flush the water system until a total of 3 gallons (12 L) has been dispensed.

Superba - White Knitting Machine Garter Transfer Carriage #01

Pictured is a Superba Double Bed Knitting Machine with the Front & Back Carriages connected on the right. On the left is the Garter Lace Transfer Carriage. This optional accessory is used to transfer stitches between the two needle beds to create knit and purl combination stitches like Garter Stitch, Seed Stitch, Moss Stitch and Basket Weave.

When you first begin to use this accessory, practice with a yarn that falls into the medium to heavy range for this gauge of machine. I suggest either a 4ply hand knitting yarn or baby yarn or Double Knitting Weight. Set your stitch size to 8 or 10 and use edge weights.

I also suggest beginning by working with 20 - 30 stitches maximum until you have practiced adjusting the amount of weights to use and learning the rhythm of using the carriages in tandem.

Superba Racking Position & Bed Spacing Indicators

Superba Racking Position & Bed Spacing Indicators

On the majority of Superba knitting machines produced you will see these two indicators.

The Racking Position Indicator is the numerical scale shown with the green triangle above the current position of 3.5. This indicates the number of needles or stitches the Front Bed is currently off centre by.

Above this is a white indicator currently showing #3. This is the Bed Space indicator. This shows at a glance the current distance or gap between the Front Bed and Back Bed. The range on a Superba is 3-6 and the measurement is in millimetres.

    melamine
  • A white crystalline compound made by heating cyanamide and used in making plastics

  • a white crystalline organic base; used mainly in making melamine resins

  • a strong aromatic heterocyclic base, tri-amino-triazine, used, in combination with formaldehyde to manufacture melamine resins such as Formica™

  • A plastic used chiefly for laminated coatings, made by copolymerizing this compound with formaldehyde

  • Melamine is an organic base and a trimer of cyanamide, with a 1,3,5-triazine skeleton. Like cyanamide, it contains 66% nitrogen by mass and, if mixed with resins, has fire retardant properties due to its release of nitrogen gas when burned or charred, and has several other industrial uses.

West Bend melamine cups

Melamine cups, marked "West Bend" - in this color combo, I thought they *had* to be late '40s/early '50s; however, a contact on Modish.net recently spotted these in a Bennett Bros. catalog from 1962, sold with a West Bend Flavomatic percolator as a "coffee travel kit."

Cups are not marked as to maker, but I think they might be Watertown - they made a very similarly-shaped cup (although the handles are slightly different.)

Breakfast Burrito and Cheddar Grits

Breakfast Burrito and Cheddar Grits

Breakfast Burrito
-2 eggs
-salsa
- 1 Flour Tortillas ( I used a 10" but you can buy the 5" and just add one egg instead of two.)
-cheddar cheese
-salt and pepper

The Steps
Scramble 2 eggs. Lightly coat the tortilla with water and microwave to steam for 10-15 seconds depending on microwave.
Add the eggs, a bit of salt/pepper , cheddar cheese and some salsa into the tortilla and fold ( see above).
Serve with grits or hashbrowns on the side or whatever you prefer.

Eat....
The burrito is best when the cheese and salsa are still cold. The contrast of the warm eggs and cool cheese and salsa will increase the enjoyment of this meal.

Simple, right?
A million variations to this recipe exist but this is one you can literally complete in under 5 minutes.

Grits
Needed items
- couple pinches of salt
- butter
-sauce pan
1 cup of water ( I always add a tiny bit of milk too )
1/4 cup of grits

Instructions
Bring water to a boil and add grits. Stir in the grits. Lower the burner temp to low and continue to cook for 5-6 minutes. Add a pinch of salt and a small amount of butter. When you serve the grits add another small pinch of salt and butter to taste.

If the grits look to thick add water. If too watery cook longer or add a dash more grits. Give the grits some time to cook ( 5-6 minutes ) before adding water or more grits since they will absorb a good amount of liquid.

Grits are very neutral tasting so salt and pepper are a must. Cheddar cheese or bacon bits on top or mixed in are nice as well.

Living in the south I forget that a good portion of the USA has never cooked or tasted grits.

1 cup (150g) frozen peas
1 cup (250ml) cream
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups (120g) grated cheddar
Method
Preheat oven to 180°C. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions. Drain, return to the pan.
Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the bacon and onion, and cook, until soft and lightly browned - at this stage I added some garlic & chilli
Break the broccoli into small florets. Cook the broccoli and peas in a steamer or in the microwave until tender. Use a fork to mix the cream and eggs together in a jug.
Add bacon, onion, broccoli, peas and the cream along with 1 cup (80g) cheddar to the pasta. Stir. Spoon into an 8 cup (2 litre) ovenproof dish. Sprinkle remaining cheddar. Bake until golden.

    convection oven
  • Convection ovens or fan ovens or turbo ovens augment a traditional oven by circulating heated air using a fan. The fan motor is in a separate enclosure, to protect it from overheating and melting any plastic components including wire insulation.

  • A cooking device that heats food by the circulation of hot air

  • An oven with fans that move the hot air around to give more even heat.

  • This oven has a fan built into it that circulates the air and cooks the food more evenly than conventional ovens. It does not require preheating and uses conventional cookware.

Combos Zesty Salsa Tortilla, 18-Count Single-Serve (Pack of 2)

These snacks had the same basic shape and concept as previous Combos formulations, with a tube-shape outside filled with a soft inner filling. In this case, the tube was made from corn, with a tortilla chip-like texture (rather than the cracker or pretzel base of other Combos), and the inside was filled with some sort of salsa-flavored concoction. There was an uneven application of salt on the outside of each piece. The texture and taste were good, as the tube was thick but had a nice soft crunch to it, and the filling seemed like salsa-flavored cheese but had some decent kick to it. Pretty good.

Earth's Best For Infants
From the day they are born, infants rapidly change and grow. And so do their food preferences. That's why Earth's Best offers a wide variety of formulas, cereals, jarred food blends and juices to ensure your baby gets the wholesome and pure nutrition they need.
Earth's Best 2nd Vegetable Variety Pack, 4-Ounce Jars
Earth’s Best organic second vegetable variety pack contains an assortment of four delicious and flavorful combinations your little one will love--sweet potato, peas and brown rice, carrots, and winter squash. The second variety foods are the right choice for six month and older babies. When your little one is ready for new tastes and textures, Earth's Best organic second foods are the perfect choice. With unique varieties and flavor combinations, your baby will experience a new world of tastes. The variety pack is a great way to add convenience to your life--easy to shop for and simple to store. It is also packaged in a sturdy storage tray that clearly indicates each flavor. This is sold in a pack of twelve 4-ounce jars, 3 jars each of the different flavors.

Why Organic?
earths-best-ingredientsChoosing organic is choosing to live a healthier life. Organic foods are produced without the use of potentially harmful chemicals and synthetic pesticides or growth hormones. This is even more important when we consider infants. For four to six months following birth, infants receive most of their nutrition from breast milk or infant formula. It is so important that these formulas contain the safest ingredients.

If ingested, potential toxic chemicals or heavy metals can lead to compromised immune system development. Likewise, young infants consume disproportionately high levels of fruits and vegetables when compared to adults. This increases their risk of exposure to potential contaminants found among non-organic products. Finally, Earth's Best products do not contain genetically engineered ingredients (GEIs), made by inserting genes from one plant into a strain of another to produce more crops or control pests.

Why organic? It is better for you, your child and the environment they will grow up in.
simple and pure
The Earth's Best Difference:

Organic ingredients grown without harmful pesticides
No Genetically Engineered Ingredients (GEIs)
Most items made only from whole grains
No added salt, modified starches or refined sugars
No artificial flavors, colors or preservatives

Rigorous product testing

As your little one grows, you'll have to make a lot of choices. With Earth's Best choosing the right food is easy. They create high quality, organic products grown by the some of the best farmers, filled with the best ingredients and tested for the highest level of purity and freshness. Earth's Best organic products help protect the earth so future generations have healthy food to eat and a healthy world to grow up in. That makes a big difference for your little one.

logoAbout Earth’s Best

Earth’s Best is the first and only full line of organic baby food. Earth's Best organic provides "better for baby" products with the freshest, purest ingredients, so parents can nurture their baby's health with the utmost confidence. Earth’s Best is organic certified by Oregon Tilth, an agency accredited by the USDA. That means they procure ingredients that do not contain potentially harmful synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or genetically engineered ingredients (GEIs). It also means that they can proudly display the USDA organic logo on their packaging.

Earth's Best organic infant formula contains no toxic chemicals or heavy metals.

Earth's Best organic infant cereals provide an excellent source of iron to aid early physical and neurological development and restore the iron depletion that results after birth.
Earth's Best organic baby juice comes from fresh pressed, undiluted, single strength juice, not from concentrate.

Earth's Best organic produce does not expose infants to the higher level of contaminants found in conventional produce. Proportionately, babies consume up to four times the fruits and vegetables that adults consume.

Blackberry -- Broken by design

Blackberry -- Broken by design

Blackberries are fundamentally broken by design. That damned "Blackberry Buzz" is getting *this* close to me pitching the device.

It emits very high power pulsed RF when exchanging data with cell towers, and causes audio pickup and buzzing in ordinary audio devices. Bothersome and irritating, but also unusual for an ordinary transmitter. It takes a lot of emitted RF power to be picked up by ordinary audio devices. I'm definitely not one of the EMF fraidy-cat tinfoil hat freaks, but I do wonder what this does when a couple of inches from your brain or 'nads.

The Audacity screen shot above is the waveform captured by by computer: this is the sound that comes out of my computer speakers every few minutes if the damned blackberry is in the same room. The pulsed 217 Hz signal is characteristic to the GSM mobile phone standard, but my previous (Nokia 6133) GSM phone NEVER interfered with other equipment. The blackberry manufacturer's (R.I.M.) official statement is that it is not their fault: it's the fault of the audio device, since it isn't adequately shielded against the blackberry radiation. Uh... riiiight....

So I bothered enough to look in the safety manual. Bear in mind lawyers have had their way with this, but it's still scary:

Radio frequency (RF) signals might affect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles. (You mean, systems designed and installed before somebody decided high-power RF sources inside motor vehicles would be a neat idea?)

Always keep the BlackBerry device more than 7.88 inches (20 cm) from a pacemaker when the BlackBerry device is turned on. (uh, or else what?)

Turn off all wireless connections on the BlackBerry device in health care facilities. (Must be those pacemakers!)

Do not use the phone on the BlackBerry® device to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak. (BOOM!)

To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn off all wireless connections on the BlackBerry device when in a “blasting area”. (Cue John Cleese: "Oh! Sorry!")

If you do not use a holster equipped with an integrated belt clip supplied or approved by RIM when you carry the BlackBerry device, keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inches (25 mm) from your body when the BlackBerry device is turned on. Carrying solutions that do not come equipped with an integrated belt clip SHOULD NOT be worn or carried on the body. (OK, that's it. It's never going in my pocket again. But I refuse to wear a goofy holster. I guess I'll have to leave it in my backpack or at home. *sob*)

Incidentally, the Blackberry is measured to deposit 1.51 watts of heat per gram of tissue, "well" below the "safe" value of 1.6 watts per gram, the manual states. Interestingly, 1.5 watts per gram is HIGHER than when I use a 1200 watt kettle to boil a liter of water...

The compliance statement:
FCC compliance statement (United States)
FCC Class B Part 15
This device complies with Part 15 of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules.
Operation is subject to the following two conditions:
- This device may not cause harmful interference.
(Uh, FAIL!)
- This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause
undesired operation.
(Hmm. Let's try it in the microwave oven.)

Other (non-radio) considerations:

Exposure to flashing lights on the BlackBerry device can cause epileptic seizures or blackouts and might be dangerous to you or others. (Oh! So that explains those lost time periods. Thank goodness. I thought those memory lapses were because of the UFO aliens.)

When using the BlackBerry device, take frequent breaks. If you experience
any discomfort in your neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands (including thumbs and fingers), or
other parts of the body when using the BlackBerry device, cease use immediately.
(uh... what do they know that they aren't telling us?)

The pattern on the marshmallows

We know that c = frequency * wavelength

The wavelength is the distance between burned spots in the marshmallow plate. This can be measured from figure 3 to be 0.11m +- .01m

For frequency we cheat and look at the back of the microwave oven - see figure 4. Microwave ovens work at 2450MHz, the middle of the ISM band. Funny that, I suppose it's what the ISM bands were originally intended for!

So c = 3.21 +- 0.5 * 10^8 m/s
That's close enough to the published value :)
