Waiting for the Gin!!

Sloes getting close to being ripe enough to pick, must go out and get some gin if we are to have 'Sloe Gin' ready for Christmas.

There seem to be plenty around this year the branches are weighed down with fruit, and it is early this year.

For the uninitiated, sloes are the fruit of the blackthorn and make a delicious drink ideal at Christmas.
If you have never picked sloes before, take care, the clue is in the name of the plant "Blackthorn", some can have some very sharp thorns.

Someone is bound to ask how you make Sloe Gin, so here is the recipe we used in the family for years.

Half fill a 1 litre screw top jar with sloes that have been washed and any sub-standard fruit removed. Prick all the fruits with a sharp fork or similar implement to break the skin and help the juice to escape, add 125g (4oz) of castor sugar and fill the jar to the top with gin {the cheap brands work fine} screw the top on and shake well, place the jars in a cool dark place. Shake daily until all the sugar has dissolved and the liquid has taken on a dark colour. Leave in the jars for two to three months, shaking regularly, when ready run the liquid through a filter and bottle, preferably in dark glass bottles to help keep the colour, I have kept a few Bailey's bottles to use. A coffee filter paper in a funnel works well. I usually leave mine until a couple of days before Christmas before I filter it.

Then all that is left is to enjoy it, either on its own, or mixed with lemonade.

They started roasting and retailing coffee here in 1978 and built a sampling room for their customers to try their coffees before buying beans. they moved roasting out of Covent Garden in 2007 and their coffee is now delivered every day from their site in Bermondsey.

They make single cone filter coffee and espresso based drinks. Their organic Jersey whole milk was from Jeff Bowles in Somerset and our organic whole cane sugar from Assukkar, Costa Rica.

We have pastries from Paul and Villandry and in the colder months, we have fresh cream truffles from Sally Clarke and single-origin chocolate from Francois Pralus.

Before starting make sure that your work environment is clean. By this I also mean that the room within which you're doing the conversion should be relatively dust free.

Dust is a very real enemy, more so than the actual disassembly process...

As a start, you could try and clean the air by having a little steam in the room (for example drop some boiling water in a pan next to where you're disassembling the camera). This should help pick up all the dust particles in the air and leave it relatively dust free.

Prerequisites : Cut the IR filter that you're going to replace in a rectangle of 22x33mm
You could also check my friend's conversion of his A100, where he goes into more detail of how you should cut the glass.

They're Happy It's Spring

issues:

* gah, sensor dust all over the sky!

* not happy with the inclusion of the gravel road at the bottom.

* a polarizing filter would have made the sky and colors more dramatic, but i can't afford one of those yet.

* on original, you can see that nothing is quite in focus. there's a haze or a glow to the entire image, and i don't know what it is. is it flaring? is it the softness the reviews mentioned? am i using the distance scale incorrectly? maybe i'm just seeing the very limit of the sensor's resolving capability?

also, i believe a large part of my irritation with this image is that the moment is perfect - this IS the decisive moment for this scene - but my composition is weak. i think the 28mm focal length is going to kick me around very harshly in this manner until i force myself to get out of the car and actually get into the scene. i'm going to have to keep reminding myself, before i look into the viewfinder, that i always need to be closer.

imperfections aside, i'm still really happy with this one.

[some further testing of the distance scale has led me to believe the softness is due mainly to the limits of the sensor, and the haze or glow could possibly be sunlight reflecting off the ground. good to know the lens isn't somehow defective.]

[further edit: i'm now wondering if it's halation. i don't know enough to know whether that's a lens flaw or a sensor flaw.]

When Turtles Fly

I ran across some really marvelous bronze statues but was not satisfied photographing them in the normal manner. Switching to my fisheye lens opened up an entire new universe in sight and perspective.
For the flying turtles I used Nik Color Efex.
The detail exractor for the under exposed turtles and polarizer to darken the sky.
Saves me from bothering with flash or HDR or lugging around a polarizing filter.
The swivel lcd screen on my Nikon D5000 let me get in and go crazy with the composition.
Yeah! That's photography.

Side-by-side comparison with polarizing filter on different settings. All other factors are exactly the same. Nikon D40, 18-55mm lens, focal length = 18mm, 1/60, f/3.5 - no flash. By rotating the polarizing filter, you can darken clouds, clarify LCD screens, reduce or enhance reflections on water or glass, and much much more.

De acordo com a tradicao carmelita, Nossa Senhora anunciou-lhe: "Meu filho muito amado: eis o escapulario que sera o distintivo da minha Ordem. Aceita-o como um penhor de privilegio, que alcancei para ti e para todos os membros da Ordem do Carmo. Aquele que morrer vestido deste escapulario, estara livre do fogo do inferno". A partir dai, Sao Simao Sotck passou a difundir, com toda a sua dedicacao, esta piedosa devocao mariana pelo mundo inteiro, tendo inclusive sido ele o responsavel pelo estender das gracas do Escapulario aos leigos, e obtido, por parte da Rainha Celestial, especial proteccao na fundacao da Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (no ano de 1251), acolhendo tambem os devotos leigos da comunidade e que passaram a participar dos grandes privilegios inerentes ao Escapulario.

The ‘Carmo Third Order Church’ - The term Third Order designates persons who live according to the Third Rule of a Roman Catholic religious order. Their members, known as Tertiaries, are generally lay members of religious orders, i.e. men and women who do not necessarily live in a religious community and yet can claim to wear the habit and participate in the good works of some great order. Members of these orders are called Tertiaries (Latin tertiarii, from tertius, third). The old monastic orders had attached to their abbeys confraternities of lay men and women, going back in some cases to the 8th century. The Confraternity Book of Durham is extant and embraces some 20,000 names in the course of eight centuries. Emperors and kings and the most illustrious men in church and state were commonly confraters of one or other of the great Benedictine abbeys. The confraters and consorors were made partakers in all the religious exercises and other good works of the community to which they were affiliated, and they were expected in return to protect and forward its interests; but they were not called upon to follow any special rule of life.

Sister of the Third Order of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, an American foundation, was established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1849. The founders were a group of Tertiaries of St. Francis who had emigrated from Bavaria for the purpose of helping the North American mission cause. The Community headquarters were successfully transferred to .... La Crosse ..... in 1871. Since that .... date, St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, has been the Motherhouse of the Sisterhood. After almost a quarter century of extreme hardship, the Community finally became stabilized, establishing itself in various forms of charitable and missionary work. In 1878, solemn perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was introduced.

Eight years ago, July 21, 2002, I married Dave. I am not a little person, despite the distinctly comical height difference. In fact, what you can't see are my 4" heels. What you can see is that we were clearly amused by the whole thing. (And that I don't have fillings, haha.)

Six years ago today, July 20th, 2004, I sat alone in a waiting room at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in NH, for 13 hours, hoping he made it through his emergency open heart surgery. He did. But we never really recovered.

Four and a half years ago Dave left us all behind.

Three years ago I left Dave's ashes in the desert, outside of Phoenix, way out near the Superstitions. And despite leaving him behind three years ago and finding my own sun, my new life, I suppose I'll just never get over how much I miss him.

Nostalgia has a funny way of blurring the unhappy times we shared, certainly, but I miss Dave more as a human than anything else. He was one of my favorites. Ironically, the song lyrics are from a band out of Tempe, AZ. I was born in Tempe, Dave in Phoenix, and of course, I left Dave in Arizona for eternity, and now have a Phoenix on my arm. It's all related in this crazy life of mine. The only thing this life of mine doesn't have is a gigantic Dave anymore. Just a Dave shaped hole in my heart.

Dave would have been 39 next month...summer has so many ghosts.

This was a hard one for the mother of girls! Thankfully, my student who is ALL BOY was willing to play along! He caught frogs and snails for me...picked flowers for his mama....and even climbed a tree. This was my favorite shot today, but I decided to post the other because I wanted to have a companion piece for my Feb. "What are little girls made of?" I processed this a little differently than my normal stuff. I wanted it to have a timeless quality. I thought about sepia....and it was nice, but I missed that blood on his elbow. And yes, that's real...not staged. lol.
