Jean Marais 1913 - 1998 JEANNOT, as he was known to his friends and fans, was a monstre sacre of the French stage and cinema. He had a long career that took on mythical proportions. His friend (and one might almost say "creator") Jean Cocteau defined Jean Marais' appeal to both men and women: "It does not depend only on sensual grace. Good-looking children usually have an easy life at home and in school, but their happiness ultimately hangs upon the qualities of their parents. Marais' father was a doctor, rather remote. It was not until Jean was 45 that he saw him again, on the point of death. His mother was all too present, possessive, and from time to time in prison on kleptomaniac charges. He invokes her influence thus: When I was a child, she was always telling me I was ugly. But I secretly thought I wasn't all that bad-looking. Nevertheless, because of her attitude, I have never been able to see myself as handsome . . . As a child, I think I must have been a real monster. There was a show-off side to me, because I wanted to be an actor. I would do anything to attract others; and in order to do so I set out to improve myself in all those areas where I felt there was some lack in me. So people have always liked me, even loved me, but I often had the feeling that it was for the wrong reasons. In his autobiography, Histoires de ma vie (1975), he writes: "I've had a fabulous life, a destiny . . . The cinema was the real awakener for me. My brother and I would amuse ourselves by replaying at home the scenes we saw on the silver screen." When Jeannot was only four years old, watching Pearl White in The Perils of Pauline, he made up his mind to be an actor, inspired by the courage the actress displayed in a thrilling scene as she grabbed a creeper and hauled herself out of an engulfing whirlpool. Later, he heard, from the old actress herself, that she had been doubled in this dangerous stunt. Jeannot felt cheated, and swore that he would perform all his movie stunts himself. And so he did; he had the physique of a first-rate athlete. At the Gala de l'Union des Artistes in which stage folk annually performed the most hair-raising circus tricks or cascades, Marais often won first prize. At the 1959 Gala, live on television, Marais, in full evening dress, shinned up to the top of an 18-metre pole with a carefree elegance. He was seen by the movie director Andre Hunebelle, already famous for his cloak-and-dagger adventure movies, who realised he could save the expense of a stuntman by putting Marais under contract for his next swordfight epic, Le Bossu. This movie's great success led to a whole series of period action melodramas and mysteries in which Marais performed all his own stunts. In fact, in 1947, at Cocteau's suggestion, he had already made an adaptation of Victor Hugo's Ruy Blas, co-starring Danielle Darrieux. The public became insatiable for the latest spectacle of Marais in short cape and form-fitting tights, escalading high walls, jumping into saddles; or as Fantommas, masked, leaping across the roofs of Paris, or swinging from giant chandeliers. He was an accomplished swordsman for roles in Le Comte de Monte Cristo (1953), Le Capitan (1960), Le Capitaine Fracasse (1960) and Le Masque de fer (1962). But at the same time he was appearing in more intelligent cinematographic works. He had appeared for the first time with Michele Morgan in 1948, in Jean Delannoy's Aux Yeux du Souvenir. In 1950, Rene Clement directed the pair in a subtly sentimental film, Chateau de verre, and later Marais confessed, "Michele Morgan is the only woman I could have loved." We are not told what his co-star's feelings (if any) might have been. One of his best serious films, Le Notti Blanche ("White Nights"), was directed by Visconti, who later also directed Marais on stage in William Gibson's play Two for the Seesaw. Jean Marais' career however was intimately bound up with the work of another great director, Jean Cocteau. He first came to Cocteau's notice in a non-speaking part in the 1937 play Oedipe Roi, which was greeted every night with boos and catcalls. Marais remained so self-possessed throughout all the hubbub that Cocteau realised he would make an ideal leading man. So Marais was to appear in several of Cocteau's most striking theatrical works: Les Chevaliers de la Table Ronde (1937), L'Aigle a Deux Tetes with the divine Edwige Feuillere in 1946, La Machine Infernale (in the 1954 revival with Jeanne Moreau), Les Parents Terribles (1938) and the 1969 revival of Oedipe Roi after Cocteau's death, which Marais directed: he created the costumes and decor too. Two of these plays, L'Aigle a Deux Tetes and Les Parents Terribles, were made into films of great distinction, virtually presented as filmed st 90 Shellder About the bead sprite: 811 Beads A cute little guy, huh? Though Slowbro's Silver Pokedex entry mentions that Shellder secretes venom, it cannot learn any Poison-type attacks by leveling up. However, it is still able to learn Toxic via TM. Shellder are one of the few Pokemon to show their entire body in a backsprite before Generation V, which it does in Generation II. Shellder and its evolution were shown to be capable of floating through the air in Pokemon Snap, a trait that has been seen in no other media. Shellder is similar to bivalves, more specifically the clam, with its tongue representing a clam's "foot". An authentic iridescent ocean blue Roman glass chip, (from the Roman Period, approx 2000 years old) is wrapped in fired copper. Combined with natural aquamarine and blue flashing labradorate, sterling silver beads and a swirling sterling silver toggle clasp. The measures of the glass chip are: 1-7/8inch x 1-1/8inch (47mm x 30mm) The necklace is 42cm (16-1/4inch) I used 0.4mm solid copper sheet to wrap the Roman glass. The beautiful patina is achieved by fire. No chemicals were used. I burnished the copper to a nice shine. The copper is left untreated, and will continue to develop it's own warm patina trough aging. Annex - Chaney Jr., Lon (Wolf Man, The) 04 It was The Wolf Man that introduced the concepts of werewolves being vulnerable to silver (in traditional folklore, it is more effective against vampires) and being marked with a pentagram (a symbol of the occult); the idea of forced shapeshifting by a full moon was carried over from Universal's 1935 film Werewolf of London. These are considered by many as part of the original folklore of the werewolf, even though they were created for the films. Unlike the werewolves of legend, which resemble true wolves, the Universal Wolf Man was an extension of those in Werewolf of London, a hybrid creature unlike the traditional interpretation. The Wolf Man stood erect like a human, but had the fur, teeth and claws and savage impulses attributed to wolves in folklore. The Wolf Man is the only Universal monster to be played by the same actor in all his 1940s film appearances (save for stunt doubles). Lon Chaney, Jr. was very proud of this, frequently stating in interviews: "He was my baby." Chaney would go on to play a wolf man (if not the Wolf Man) in very similar makeup in the 1959 Mexican film La Casa del Terror and a famous 1962 episode of TV's Route 66 titled Lizard's Leg and Owlet's Wing, which also starred Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein Monster. Nearly a decade later, even though he was seriously ill at the time, Chaney managed to conjure up his original energetic gestures while masked in a quasi-wolfish rubber mask for one scene in his last (and most unfortunate) film, 1971's Dracula vs. Frankenstein. The Wolf Man was not Universal's first werewolf film. It was preceded by Werewolf of London (1935), starring noted character actor Henry Hull in a quite different and more subtle werewolf makeup. As noted previously, Hull objected to having his face entirely covered in latex and hair, and a less-hirsute, more devilish version was used in the film. The film was not a huge box office success, probably because audiences of the day thought it too similar in many ways to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for which Fredric March had won an Oscar three years before. Some latter-day critics prefer Jack Pierce's earlier werewolf to Chaney's, which was described in Carlos Clarens's book An Illustrated History of the Horror FIlm as "... looking like a hirsute Cossack." In the 1970s, novelizations of the original films were issued as paperback originals as part of a series written by "Carl Dreadstone," a house name pseudonym for a several writers, including British horror writer Ramsey Campbell.[citation needed] Fantasy/horror author Neil Gaiman uses the "Larry Talbot" character in two selections from his short story collection Smoke and Mirrors. Harlan Ellison's Hugo Award winning "Adrift just off the Islets of Langerhans, latitude 38 degrees, 54' N., longitude 77 degrees, 00' 13' W." uses "Laurence Talbot" as the main character. Heavy metal band Iced Earth's track "Wolf" from the album Horror Show, has the poem recited in its main chorus with some added words in between. Similarly, the track "Howl" by Florence + The Machine (from the album Lungs) features a slightly edited version of the poem in the closing verse. Cradle of Filth used the poem as the intro to their track entitled "Queen of Winter, Throned" on the album V Empire. Dairy Milk Bar Cake Now this is my kind of cake!!!!! So.......we have a friend coming over today and I promised him I'd make a cake, I hope he likes it! Just loved making this...such fun! This is a rich, moist chocolate sheet cake, carved and filled/covered in buttercream, the chocolate chunk end is covered in chocolate fondant (well obviously!) and the other side covered in fondant. The foil looking part was dusted with Rimini coloured lustre and silver lustre, as for the label the fondant is purple/blue with hand cut lettering (Dairy) and the rest was painted on freehand....as you can tell LOL!!! The few individual chunks are also cake covered in chocolate fondant......Will has already said they are his! LOL! Copy of the Holy Nail kept in Santa Croce Gerusalemme, Rome. dragonfly ring This was the third and trickiest of the three rings because the bristles go in both directions. The shank is of a medium gauge square wire. I wanted these pieces to look very modern, which is not usually my style. I am warming to it though. This spines on this ring measure 2.875" from end to end and about .375" wide across the top. Once the bristles were in place this piece reminded me most of a rowing shell. It also brought to mind the cover of Led Zeppelin Four-- with the old man carrying the load of sticks. But then I thought of insects (six legs) and the way the bristles moved had a distinctly dragonfly feel to it.
