I'm thinking that after I put all that stuff in the garbage and in the dumpster out back, the family of mutant squirrels that usually feast on the garbage will either a) Die. All die, or b) Get even bigger and therefore scarier when they jump out and attack me on Sunday afternoons. (One of these days I'm going to have to go the hospital to get rabies shots, I swear.) Really, I hope they don't die from it. But that was gross stuff. You're not supposed to eat it. Silly squirrels - hair, bugs and expired food is for kids! Secret 25: I'm a cry-er. It's strange. Not like one of those whiny annoying girls who cry over everything, or those super high strung emotional people who take everything to the enth degree, but I am an emotional person. No doubt. Lamest thing? Most of the time I cry for other people. It actually pains me to see people sad, people go to dark places. People having terrible things happening to them that they really don't deserve. Breaks my heart. And I cry. (yes hello loser face, that would be me.) That's something I'm very ... not quite ashamed of, but feel totally ridicules about. It just makes me feel like the biggest loser in the world. Like a stupid little girl who can't take care of herself. And I hate that. WHIP CRACKING INDY REVIEW The Hat! It's glued on! Oh man! No Han Solo or Blade Runner customs w/ this sculpt. That being said....he is cool! A little stubble. Nose is crooked...the scar on chin...it all looks great! The hat is little too far back....but all in all I give the head sculpt a 4.5 out of 5. The bod is weird. No swivel neck. No twist at the waist. There is button of Six Million Dollar Man Doll proportions hanging out of the back of his shirt. Small modern Joe feet. Classic legs. Classic skinny arms ( the mock-up had the buffed ones!) One lobster grip hand (they made a sad attempt on mine to cut the trigger finger....Really sloppy). One spring loaded grip hand. The arm that holds the whip has to remain straight...well it bends at the elbow....but you can't pull it out to the side. Makes him a little stiff on the one side. The whipping feature is fun...I'm sure a lot of kids will get a kick out of it. The noise is cheesy. Bad special effects come to mind. For the bod.. 3 out of 5. It's still way better than any of the Hasbro chubby Star Wars or HOF bods. The gear. A solid 5 out of 5. The whip is soft and rubbery. Is that how the AT Modern Mummy set whip was? Or even the 12" GI JOE Indiana Jones Ride whip? It works well and can be rolled up into the bag he's sporting. Pants, shirt, shoes, holster, little gun, and even the shoes are welcome additions to any 12" kitbashin' customizer! I’m so taut with fear that I don’t hear him properly. I lean closer again and ask him what he said. ‘Please’ he shouts eagerly into my ear ‘please don’t let them touch me!’ and with that he breaks away, eyes bulging with fear, his hand grasping my shoulder. The ‘they’ he refers to are the Spanish and Italian girls on the dance-floor. They being the Spanish and Italian girls that are sharing the hostel with us, the dance-floor being one foolhardy step away from this haven of a bar. We being the northern European boys that are trapped against this bar and in this neon wonderland. Trapped physically and trapped mentally, too proud to admit that we would rather run away than have to dance for the affections of these beautiful, swaying girls. The night started so well. 20 strangers from across the glorious continent of ours with free run of the Terramar hostel. Bronzed Italians male models, scantily clad Spanish girls, pale skinned Germans, a terrified English sailor and one pallid little Scot. Together we were young. Together we were going out. What could go wrong? What went wrong was the choice of bar, the place we were in was too loud, too dance focused and far, far too small. What went wrong was the clash of culture that was always present in the hostel, but never quite so defined. What went wrong was the girls who, without the usual northern European requirement for litres of vodka and sugar, began swaying mercilessly in front of us. No self consciousness, no hiding their intent and worst of all, no lack of beguiling grace and beauty. Within seconds the German lads, the sailor and the pallid little Scot that was myself had shrunken in size and in confidence. No longer were our pithy comments and wise insights any use. Here and in this place these girls wanted only to know how you could move your hips, how you could spin and sway them with power and machismo? The answer to the former being that my hips are used solely for self-propulsion, the latter being that where we all come from, machismo was lager and stoicism. But this was not home, this was Mallorca. We were not drinking beer we were drinking sangria and we were not impressing, we were sinking. The girls would make their way along the line at the bar, kindly threatening us with a dance (hence the Germans extreme panic). Each one of use in turn rejecting the offer of these sirens in favour of blessed stable ground. We did not need nor wish to move from where we stood, thank you very much, here our feet were on solid ground and we were not for moving. However, alcohol does strange things, never more true than when you are on holiday. After a few more glasses, or maybe it was litres, of sangria, I looked at myself in the toilet mirror and told myself that I could do it. Once I had cleared my bladder and wiped away any thoughts of who I once was, I could do this. With that, I stepped back into the fray, I knew which girl was to be mine, and I knew no doubt about this. I caught her eye as I walked towards her, she looked and smiled, the connection made and the dance to begin, until he stepped forward. The Italian male model chose that very second to swoop in from his preening perch. He grabbed her, my girl, by the waist and forced her across that dance-floor in a display of glorious physicality. His arms flexed and strained with her body, his shirt wide open, his torso burning bright under the lights. Her body melted into his, pliant and eager. As his hands ran firmly across her waist, up across her chest, as his hands grasped her hair in his and spun her around for a fleeting, brutal kiss, she never once complained, never once rejected him. That was machismo and that was dancing. His final gesture was to spin her around to face me, her body still swaying even as he left her, her eyes wide with joy and lust. She looked at me, keen for this night to continue, keen to be taken; to be forced to dance once again. I looked deep into her eyes, and then beyond them to that empty spot by the bar. The German boy winked gently at me, he knew. He held my spot and he held my pride. I walked calmly past the smooth, tanned curves of the girl that I was never to spin and quietly whispered into the German’s ear ‘Don’t let them touch me, whatever you do, just don’t let them touch me’ And with that we chinked Sangria glasses and drank until dawn. Day 278: Down With The Pop Up This past Saturday was our last day of our week long pop up shop in New York City. These were all Canadians that were saying this. So you know that the rest of the world is just as excited. I can't even describe how excited I am. I'm excited for the future. For Alex's future. And I can't wait to wake Alex up in the morning and tell him that the guy whose sticker he was wearing today, and the guy whose lawn sign he cried over the other day because it blew away (and we had to go to the local campaign office to get another one) will be his next president. Congratulations to Obama and Biden and congratulations to all of us that fought for his election. Way to go. We did it! February 23 The perfect union: Obama/Apple T-shirts! A shame they're too big... Just got these T-shirts from Fastmac, and I'm actually pretty irritated: not only did they hike the price on me after my purchase, but the sizes are ridiculously large. These two tents are MEDIUMS! I don't see him very often, not like I used to and it is ridiculous considering I only live right next door. They are real busy and so am I. We need to make time for things and people who are important to us...... That reminds me of a tiny piece of white folded paper found in my Dad's wallet after he died. My Mother never even knew it existed. I asked her if I could have it and she said I could. It now is folded, just how Dad had it folded, and it lives inside of my wallet. It reads: I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. I must say that it really surprised all of us to find this in my Dad's wallet. Dad never said much and in fact, sometimes he yelled a lot. I think back in the days my Dad grew up in, showing emotion or affection was not a thing a man did. Thinking back now, I remember so many little things that Dad did and said that told me that he loved all of us so much. He took very good care of his family. I remember my Mother telling me that our Dad had lived a very hard life. His own Father died when my Dad was a senior in high school. He had to quickly go to work at the local steel mill to become the "Father" to his younger sister, younger brother, new baby sister and care for his ailing Mother. He was 18 years old then and had just graduated from high school. He and my Mother were married when they both were 22 years old. My Mother did not want to get married, as her brother had just died. She knew my Dad already had his hands full with is family but he must have succeeded in talking her into going through with their wedding plans. My Mother soon became the caregiver to my Dad's family too. I remember the stories she told me of standing ironing so many white dress shirts for my Dad's younger brother and the nursing uniforms for my Dad's younger sister and caring for a very young child, my Dad's tiny little sister. My Dad's Mother died not long after my parents got married, leaving my Dad and Mom to be the "new Dad and Mom" to my Dad's younger siblings. Thinking back, no wonder my Dad sometimes yelled a lot and never wanted us to get out of line. He was pretty stern and really never laughed a lot. It kind of seems like he didn't really have very much of a childhood or young adult life without worry. If you have someone who cares about you, loves you and takes good care of you.....take the time to tell them "thank you" and let them know you appreciate them. I know I wrote my Mom and Dad both letters after I became a Mother of two young children. It made me realize all they had sacrificed for me and my three younger siblings. Oh did they ever love us....a lot. My Mother called me from her home in Ohio when the mailman delivered those two letters...sent from my home in Pennsylvania. Mom said that Dad took his letter I had written him and went away to an area in the house he would go to smoke ( Mom didn't want us around smoke ) and watch TV. She walked in to see him reading his letter and she said he had a tear running down his cheek. She said he never said a word to her, but he put his letter in his pocket. I wonder whatever happened to Dad's letter. We found Mom's in her things after she died, but not Dads. It makes me very happy....that I took the time. ............and to think all of these floods of memories, which had not even been thought of when I uploaded, started off with a pictures of a tiny little boy. Dad became very Americanized: Only years earlier, he would mumble obscenely about the dirty merde-America hippies, commenting about their torn [denim] pants and t-shirts. my dad always wore slacks, polished shoes a sports jacket and tie when we would see him. [When he would visit - (divorced)] I bought that jacket for 60 bucks at the "Avenue I Flea Market" I suppose now that they are back in style, the new retro ones go for a bit more. The long bar curved rakishly; gambling and the requisite pool tables were in the rear. Sloppy Joe's migrated across the street to its present location on May 5, 1937. The move was occasioned by a rent increase that Joe Russell refused to pay: from three dollars a week to a whopping four. Luckily, the former Victoria Restaurant owned by Spanish emigrant Juan Farto was vacant. Located at the corner of Duval and Greene streets, the Victoria had been built in 1917 and incorporated beautiful Cuban tile work, busily whirring ceiling fans, and jalousie doors. In true Key West fashion, the bar never actually closed during the transition--customers simply picked up their drinks and carried them, along with every accoutrement in the place, down the block to 201 Duval Street. Service resumed with barely a blink. The new Sloppy Joe's boasted the longest bar in town, a walled-off room often used for gambling, and life-size paintings of fighters on the walls. Also adorning one wall was a 119-pound sailfish caught by Hemingway, and Skinner had pride of place above the huge bar. Joe Russell was a charter boat captain, rumrunner, Hemingway's boat pilot, and the author's fishing companion for twelve years. In his company, Papa once caught an astonishing 54 marlin in 115 days. Hemingway called him "Josie Grunts" and used him as the model for Freddy, the owner of Freddy's Bar and captain of the Queen Conch in To Have and Have Not. Joe Russell died in 1941 of a heart attack. He was 53 years old. When Joe officially opened the bar, Hemingway and his "Mob" of cohorts were enthusiastic regular customers. In fact, the author once called himself a co-owner or silent partner in the enterprise. The "Mob" was comprised of some of the literary lights of the day as well as a variety of famous and infamous local residents: John Dos Pasos, Waldo Pierce, J.B. Sullivan, Hamilton Adams, Captain Eddie Saunders, Henry Strater. They wrangled, drank, and philosophized the days away, never knowing they were building a legend. When Hemingway left Key West in 1939, he left a number of personal effects stored in a house next to Sloppy Joe's. After the house was sold, the effects were moved into the back room behind the bar at Sloppy's. They remained there until 1962, a year after Hemingway's death, when his widow opened the room and took possession of them. Some of the memorabilia was given to the then-owner of the bar to be displayed. Over the years Sloppy Joe's, like rare Cuban rum, has gained a richness and flavor while essentially remaining unchanged. The ceiling fans still whisper busily, a little bit wobbly but carrying on. The jalousie doors open on a Duval Street busier than even Hemingway could imagine, yet still bearing the offbeat ambience that prompted him to brand Key West "the St. Tropez of the poor." These are the size 50 jeans I got for Christmas. As you can see, there is some spare room in them now. Actually, if you had been here when I took the photo, you would know I was standing on the bottoms of the jeans legs and could not keep them up between photo shots. It all started in November or maybe even earlier. My ankles were beginning to bark, my knees hurt, and it got to the point where I could not get through a day at work without having rather severe back pain. I figured my body would adjust to the weight but it just got worse. To make things even more difficult, I could not get through most days without a nap. I was just so tired all the time. I had little energy to get things done around the house. I just felt like I wasn't really living life anymore. Just existing as this fat guy with a big ball gut...which was making my back hurt a lot. I just felt like I was overwhelmed by this huge dark cloud of lethargy. So the first week of January I made some changes. I doubled the amount of vitamins I take every day. I cut out almost all sugar from my food intake, and decided to eat more healthy. My current breakfast favorites are a roasted turkey sandwich (it takes one minute to assemble, not exactly traditional breakfast, but do I look like a traditional guy?) or a six egg white omelet with sauteed tomato and spinach with parmesan cheese. Lunch is soup and salad or a turkey burger and salad, no bun, just the turkey burger. Gawd, they are good. I do not know what seasoning the manufacturer is putting in them, but everyone at work is hooked on them. Dinner is either something made from scratch or I make bear something he likes (as he is not eating so healthy) and I do Healthy Choice. Hey, I cook for others all day! Last night we had chicken with zucchini, yellow squash carrots and red bell peppers sauteed in olive oil, thyme, fresh basil and salt & pepper and tossed with pasta. I still drink beer most nights. The result? See the photo above. From January 7th to Sunday, February 20th, I have gone from 340 to 295. Today I had to run around the corner to Patrick's Market for a few things. I ended up in size 44's. Good thing I saved my old clothes as I was putting on weight. The t-shirt in this pic is an XL. The underwear I modeled a week or so ago also XL. I can now walk into any store and actually buy things. What about my health you say? Well...I haven't had the urge to nap in over a month. I get more done at work. I notice I don't waddle anymore, and can walk faster. I have more energy at home and the results have been documented here in my 365 in some of the projects I have completed around the apartment. I can bend over to pick something up without my belly cutting into my inner organs and affecting my breathing. I can actually trim my own toenails again. And yes....I have more energy in bed. ;) Perhaps best of all is that I feel more alive...more energized...I feel more like I am living life. My knees do not hurt anymore, my ankles do not hurt anymore, and my back is not killing me anymore. Do I plan to loose more weight? I don't know actually. I plan to keep eating healthy and apparently that adds up to less calories than I need to maintain my current body weight, so I imagine I will drop more weight. Do I have a goal?
