The photo on the right is an earlier lap than the one on the left--Pre crossed the finish line with his shirt tail out. The photos of Pre are virtually identical except for the shirt tail and his left hand being slightly lower in the right photo. Amazing coincidence! There were two 5000m heats on July 6, 1972. The top six finishers of each heat met in the final. A crowd of 12,500 watched the heats. The final was run 7:30pm Sunday, July 9th. After winning his heat, Pre said: "I feel just great. I hope the same way Sunday. I needed this race for a lot of reasons. Mostly it was the psychological factor. When you have rested four or five days, you wonder if you still have it." After reviewing his heat win and the qualifying fifth-place finish by 34-year old chief rival George Young in the 2nd 5000m heat, 21-year old Pre started to worry. "He [Young] must be in good shape or he wouldn't be here." Young was competing for his fourth Olympic berth.
