BLUE FLORAL DRAPES - BAHAMIAN SHUTTERS. Blue Floral Drapes
Bonnie Necklace I built this asymmetrical pearl necklace around the vintage cluster of sky blue flowers. It has already lived a glamorous life as a brooch and is now the star of this romantic necklace. The 11 sky blue flowers each have a sparkling clear rhinestone center. I strung the 5 strands of pearls on nylon cord for a lovely drape. Each strand is a different shape and size of ivory freshwater pearls. A lobster claw clasp provides a secure closure. Tatiana Necklace This asymmetrical necklace features a vintage silver-tone brooch set with sky blue rhinestones. It's a gorgeous piece with a floral or starburst design and prong set stones. I framed this brooch with two small Swarovski crystal roundelles and set it in a chain of blue faceted glass beads in 8mm and 12mm sizes. A silver-plated chain drapes from the brooch to the other side of the necklace. A lobster claw clasp provides a secure closure. Mystic Ed thinks of Lana turner and dedicated to Walker Dukes & Greenman 2008 I have felt very much in tune with the late great and beautiful actress Lana Turner. Maybe it has something to do with each time I wear my favourite Astraka coat? Whatever the reason, Lana was the most glamorous of stars who had a unique talent. This is another tribute to her: Me trying..to look glamorous as she would have done if she was being photographed in the snow. CANOPIES FOR GIRLS BEDS : GAS STATION CANOPY LIGHTS Canopies For Girls Beds
The G…stairs! Funny when you can find letters in compositions… Have a great week everyone! This old sanatorium was built by St. Jorgen Foundation in Bergen. It should serve as a tuberculosis hospital for the West Coast. Most patients came from the Bergen region, but there were patients from all over the country. The sanatorium was in operation until mid 1950's. The background for building the sanatorium here was said to be it's dry climate, pine forest and the thin mountain air. It was a recipe believed in the old days to cure people with tuberculosis. On this location they found a whole "package" - it was located on a hill and in a climate that one at the time considered "immune zone" against the disease. In the year 1900, the plans for the sanataorium was ready. The three story hospital would have 96 beds and modern spa and operating room. An extension was made in 1924 and the capacity increased to 120 beds, and by 1950 it had reached 150 beds. The construction plan in 1900 included also a separate laundry, stable and icehouse - and not least an electrically driven cable car from the steamship pier at the fjord and up to "rock shelf". It should also be built a 6 km stretch of road with 13 bends up the hill. The cable car and the power plant to the sanatorium are located in side buildings next to the sanatorium. Calculations showed that the large hospital facility would cost 456,000 norwegian kroner (approx. 76000$ - an enormous sum in those days. Most of the money was acquired in Bergen: Bergen city guaranteed for 200,000 kroner, and wealthy citizens for 175,000 kroner. The final amount turned out to be 777,000 thousand kroner when the plant was inaugurated on 2 in November 1902. On the opening party there was greeting telegrams from both the Swedish-Norwegian King and Queen, Parliament President Carl Werner and shipowner and later Prime Minister Johan Ludwig Mowinckel. Some years later, it was also built senior housing, two family dwellings for the stoker and the gardener, and "sister house" for nurses. there were also a separate chapel with mortuary. The first treatment they had to offer - before the vaccine against the disease came after World War II - was partly operations - partly different cures. One of the cures they used here was making sure the patients got enough air daily. Meaning they would lay outside in their beds in both in summer and winter, well-packaged in bags of reindeer skins. They were placed under a huge canopy along the entire south wall and this canopy prevented rain and snow to enter in their air spaces. Around the hospital there was built a large park with roads where patients who were strong enough could exercise. Another cure they used was known as 'Blowing of the lungs'. This took place inside the 'operation lodge'. The technique comprised much of the so-called "blowing". When tuberculosis attacked the lungs, it would eat the tissue, consume it so that it formed large cavities in the lung tissue. It was essential to close these cavities. This was done by puncturing the lung where the cavities had formed so that sick lung would collapse and the wounds would be healed exactly where the cavities formed. Patients here was almost fat on the heavy diet and the hospital had its own pig barn where they made sure that the pigs had an extra thick blubber layer before they were slaughtered. And it was also quite common for relatives to send food and treats in abundant quantities Every July a rich man in Bergen would send a cargo of oranges to patients and staff. The distance down to the village, the risk of getting infected and the fact that most patients were visitors, not locals - turned this place into a rather secrete and closed society. The sanatorium even had its own post office and therefore the people here would establish a separate social life. The whole complex was built in 1902 so that women and men were strictly separated. There were two bed suites, operation and cure rooms and separate dining rooms for each of the sexes. This separation of the sexes was kept strict up to a major rebuild that was done in 1937. Although there were strict gender segregation indoors, it was allowed for girls and boys to come together on the romantic paths in the park, as well as in the decorated assembly hall when it was organized parties, cinema, concerts or theater. Most of the patients here was young people, and those who were fit enough, would take part part in simple sports activities and games in the park outdoors. It was founded to concerts, and patients set up plays every New Year's Eve and may 17.(Norways independence day) And, after a rich shipowner and other rich people in Bergen gave the sanatorium a film apparatus in 1937, they had cinema once a week. The sanatorium is now shut down. In the fight against tuberculosis there was a breakthrough - it happened just afte Lyric's Room Lyric loves her new big girl furniture. The bed comes with canopy rails too, but it would take up too much room. She also has a trundle underneath(not yet set up) for when she has frineds over. General contractor: Webcor Builders. Designed Italy and United States, 2000–8 The recently completed California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, designed by architect Renzo Piano, is a vibrant expression of the Academy’s mission to explore, explain, and protect the natural world. At over 400,000 square feet, it is the largest public building ever to obtain a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum rating for its environmental performance. This natural-history museum is organized around a central atrium which leads to three architectural elements retained from the previous museum; and two new ninety-foothigh spheres, one housing a planetarium, the other a rain forest. The atrium is covered by two layers of tensile nets which hold sun, acoustic, and rain shades. Surrounding the building is a solar canopy embedded with 60,000 photovoltaic cells, which produces between 5 and 10% of the building’s power and casts a vibrating light shadow on the space below. The steel used for the structure is recycled; parts of the former demolished museum have been reused in a nearby freeway; excavated sand has restored the nearby coastal dunes; a large part of the building’s insulation is from recycled denim (San Francisco is home to Levi’s jeans); and water from the nearby Pacific Ocean is filtered and piped directly into the museum’s aquarium, which features the world’s deepest live coral-reef exhibit. Another distinguishing feature is the museum’s 2.5-acre roof, landscaped with seven verdant mounds covered by nine indigenous plant species that provide habitat for butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other creatures. The roof’s eco-friendly design is a living environment and outdoor laboratory for students and scientists. The green roof also helps regulate temperatures throughout the building and absorbs 98% of all storm water, thus lowering its impact on San Francisco’s sewage system. The roof plants are carried in specially designed bio-trays made from coconut-husk fiber, lined with fungi to supply nutrients; the trays disintegrate within three years. Eel only a mother could love Like the angler fish, this eel appears to have an appendage on the top of its head that is designed to lure unsuspecting little fish within "fast food" distance of its grasping teeth jaws. Being exceedingly lazy, I'm not going to make any attempt to properly identify any of the sea creatures, my wife and I saw at Newport Oregon's excellent aquarium, but I did want to share a few of the tank dwellers with others. The aquarium had their otter and aviary exhibits closed down, so we almost hesitated to visit it on this trip, but once in on a sunny day and relatively uncrowded conditions, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Monday 5 October 2009 We arrived in Newport Oregon, Monday evening in time to secure a good camping spot at the Oregon State Park South Beach campground (hot showers and right on the beach). We organized our camp which didn’t take long since our bed was already made up in the back of our 1994 Toyota 4 X 4 pickup truck with a cab high canopy (screen windows & reading lights). Then we grabbed the cameras and hiked to the beach to take a few photos as the sun dropped below the horizon over the Pacific Ocean. Tuesday 6 October 2009 We broke camp and drove to the Oregon’s tallest lighthouse at Yaquina Head, north of Newport. We rated this visit as one of the highlights of our entire road trip. The lighthouse was built in 1873 and was interesting to visit. The staff there gave a nice tour and provided us with interesting facts and stories about the lighthouse. We arrived early and the beach just south of the lighthouse was not crowded and had a large gathering of harbor seals, pelicans, cormorants and other sea birds. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Coolaroo Sun Shades - White Exterior Shutters Coolaroo Sun Shades
12' Right Triangle Sage Color Premium Quality Heavy Duty Sun Shade Sail Made in USA These attractive tensioned fabric shade sails can be installed over entryways, swimming pools, patios, and dining or play areas. They can also provide protection over parking spaces or pretty much anywhere shade is desired. Our premium quality shade sails are fabricated with the highest quality materials and made in the USA. Sewn throughout the entire perimeter for extra strength is 1 1/2" webbing and we use 316 stainless steel triangle rings in the corners. Our shade sails are made with a high rated UV blocking fabric and are sewn with double rows of locking stitches (not chain stitch). The cloth is a high-density polyethylene knit that is extremely strong and lasts for years in direct sun. Extra wide fabric is used so there are no seams. Gentle curves along the edges allow for proper tension distribution. When properly tightened and securely attached they can withstand seasonal weather conditions year after year. However, shade sails are not recommended for snow loads. Our shade sails are NFPA 701 - 1999, ASTM E-84 Class A, and California State Fire Marshal 13115 fire standard compliant. This is particularly important for commercial applications. Posts and attachment hardware not included. (16) Hanging Mantis Praying Mantis, literally hanging out under a Coolaroo shade sail in our back yard. Three SB-800s. Two on lightstands to left and right, one on-camera as Commander. This was shot around noon, high aperture for good depth of field, and was one of the more difficult lighting sets I've done. The shade was flapping up and down (about 8" variation) in the wind, and the sun coming through the shade itself made finding my composition a lot harder than usual. Barnyarn Coolaroo Ron and I made the sheep a shadecloth awning so they could catch the breeze while avoiding the sun on hot days like today. So far, they mostly still hang out in the barn (where they have two big fans), but they do drift out to the awning in the afternoon. The best thing about it is that it keeps their water cool without hogging valuable real estate in the limited shade the barn. IMG 0053 The streets are packed with vendors, each with their own personal hustle. Designer names certainly have gotten cheaper lately... I can pick up a dozen Rolexes for $30 each, or diamond-studded Dolce & Gabbana shades for $10. Skeptics might cast doubt as to the provenance of these bargains. Street artists sketch or photograph passing tourists. There's one particular scheme that's pretty common—you'll see Asians drawing people's names with multicolored crayons, using ironing boards as draftsman's tables. Deck shade structure - Bamboo wood blinds - 20x20 canopy Deck Shade Structure
Ahhh... Shade! - Eagle Slough Observation Deck Today we worked on completing the shade structure at the end of the observation deck. We ended up going with lattice rather than a solid roof for reasons of airflow but really ended up liking the looks of the lattice much better than we had originally planned. Besides feeling more open and airy, the sun coming through the lattice casts interesting shadows, adding a lot of visual interest to an otherwise flat, open deck. About 5 more boards and we are 100% done! At that point I am going to trade in my hammer and screwgun for a folding chair and a good nap in the cool breeze and finally enjoy some of our group's handiwork! Oh, by the way... did I mention we also have a boardwalk, trellis, garden and kiosk to finish as well? If you have free time and are looking for something to do, give me a call! Deck Gallery Part of the skateboard deck gallery at FTC, Haight Street, San Francisco-California. I rode that first Kris Markovich deck back in the day (the one with the box of fries as the graphic). I've always liked Mike Carroll's first board on H-Street (top row, second board) as well as the Jeremy Klein from World Industries (bottom row, with the vegetables being chased by the candy bar). Duck island boat blinds : Climbing plant for shade. Duck Island Boat Blinds
Bald Eagle at Lake Martin DSC_7480: March 1, 2008. I went out to Lake Martin this morning at sunrise to go kayaking. There were a lot of fishing boats out. I paddled around the south end looking for birds. As the sun came up in the southeast, I saw some egrets and a blue heron feeding on the western shoreline, so I headed there. A large hawk scattered the birds before I got there. Then, I heard another hawk screeching to the north along the western shoreline. I headed that way to see it. Suddenly, I saw a bald eagle circling in the area of the hawk. It was about 7:08 am. I was so excited I almost forgot to take a photo... The eagle had it's talons out like it was ready for a fight. The bald eagle was obviously after something the hawk had. The eagle circled a few times, then landed in a tree. As I approached at about 200 yards, the eagle got nervous and left, heading due north. I got in position to see the hawk. It was apparently a red-shouldered hawk. I didn't get a good look before it took off with a fish in it's talons. I got a photo of the hawk and the fish. I decided to head back to the boat launch and paddled directly across the lake. I immediately saw another large bird sitting on a post near a duck blind. My binoculars proved it to be an osprey. I paddled pretty close and got a good shot of it before it took off. I think it was just hanging out, waiting for the eagle to leave.
