Bald Eagle at Lake Martin
DSC_7480: March 1, 2008. I went out to Lake
Martin this morning at sunrise to go kayaking. There were a lot of
fishing boats out. I paddled around the south end looking for
birds. As the sun came up in the southeast, I saw some egrets and a
blue heron feeding on the western shoreline, so I headed there. A
large hawk scattered the birds before I got there. Then, I heard
another hawk screeching to the north along the western shoreline. I
headed that way to see it. Suddenly, I saw a bald eagle circling in
the area of the hawk. It was about 7:08 am. I was so
excited I almost forgot to take a photo... The eagle had it's talons out
like it was ready for a fight.
The bald eagle was obviously after something the hawk had. The eagle circled a few times, then landed in a tree. As I approached at about 200 yards, the eagle got
nervous and left, heading due north. I got in position to see
the hawk. It was apparently a red-shouldered hawk. I didn't
get a good look before it took off with a fish in it's talons. I got
a photo of the hawk and the fish.
I decided to head back to the boat launch and paddled directly across the
lake. I immediately saw another large bird sitting on a post near a
duck blind. My binoculars proved it to be an osprey. I paddled
pretty close and got a good shot of it before it took off. I think
it was just hanging out, waiting for the eagle to leave.
