A flight of three Voisin III bombers

A flight of three Voisin III bombers

Nothing on reverse (Carte Postale).

A flight of three Voisin III bombers take off from a French airfield sometime early in the Great War.

The Voisin III (or Voisin 3) was one of the first two-seat bomber and ground attack aircraft of World War I. It was a pusher biplane, developed by Aeroplanes Voisin of Gabriel Voisin in 1914 as a more powerful version of the 1912 Voisin I (Voisin 1) design. It also incorporated a light steel frame which made it survivable in the temporary airfields of wartime military aviation.

The Voisin III became the standard Allied bomber in the early years of the war. The main users were the French Air Force and the Imperial Russian Air Force. Russia ordered over 800 in France and built a further 400 under license at DUX in Moscow. Around 100 were built in Italy, and 50 in the United Kingdom, while smaller numbers were purchased by Belgium and Romania.

AVIATORS, Black Trailblazers

AVIATORS, Black Trailblazers

Captain Donnie L. Cochran was the first Black aviator assigned to the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels) in 1986. Cochran later assumed command of the Blue Angels in 1994.

Personal Biography

Donnie L. Cochran was born July 6, 1954, on a farm near Pelham, Georgia (in southwest Georgia).

Military Biography

Cochran completed flight school and was officially recognized as a pilot (i.e. earned his Navy wings) in 1978 after completing basic and advanced Jet training.

On July 13, 1985, during an air show at Niagara Falls International Airport, two A-4 Skyhawk jet aircraft collided. One pilot was killed, Navy Lieutenant Commander Robert Gershon, of Pensacola, Florida and the other, Lieutenant Anthony Caputi, 30, ejected from his plane and landed safely on the grounds of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Lieutenant Commander Cochran, along with two other pilots, were selected to replace these two members of the Blue Angels precision flying team.

On October 4, 1985, Cochran became the first African American to become a member of the Blue Angels precision flying team in the history of its 40 year existence. He flew planes #3 and #4 during this 3 year assignment.

Following two years of flying with the Blue Angels Cochran was stationed at the Naval Air Station at Miramar. Next Cochran joined the "Bounty Hunters" of fighter squadron 2 (VF-2) while the squadron was deployed aboard the carrier USS Ranger (CV-61). He attended the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama and during this time earned a masters degree in Human Resource Management from Troy State University. Following this Cochran reported to Fighter Squadron 1 (VF-1) in March 1992 as Executive Officer. He took command of that same squadron in July 1993. When VF-1 was disestablished in September 1993, he became the commander of Fighter Squadron 111 (VF-111) known as the "Sun Downers".

In 1994, Cochran, was called to replace Commander Robert E. Stumpf who had been grounded (placed in a no flying status) as a result of a scandal (which the news media termed the "Tailhook Scandal") relating to a party held by some Naval aviators in Las Vegas, Nevada.[1]

By 1995, Cochran had accumulated more than 4,350 total flight hours in seven (7) different types of naval aircraft and completed 570 carrier landings. During his tours as a Blue Angel pilot, he flew over 2,200 hours in more than 300 air shows before over 30 million spectators throughout the United States and Canada.

Captain Cochran served as the Commanding Officer of the NROTC Unit at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) from August 1996 until July 1999.

During his final assignment he served as the Deputy Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, second in command of over 7,000 people at over 1,500 locations around the nation and abroad. Captain Cochran retired from the U.S. Navy with over 24 years of aviation experience.

Education

Cochran earned a Civil Engineering degree from Savannah State College (now known as Savannah State University, Savannah, Georgia in 1976 where he was a member of the NROTC program. He is also a graduate of the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama and earned a masters degree in Human Resource Management from Troy State University.

* In 1986, Lieutenant Commander Cochran had flown more than 2,000 hours in jet fighters and completed 469 carrier landings.

* On October 4, 1985, Cochran became the first African American to become a member of the Blue Angels precision flying team in the history of its 40 year existence.

* On July 4, 1986, Cochran , along with other members of the Blue Angels flew an A-4 Skyhawk in a ceremonial celebration saluting the restoration of the Statue of Liberty.

* On May 10, 1991 Savannah State University dedicated a memorial on the university's campus in honor of Cochran. The memorial contains an A4 jet painted in the Blue Angel's traditional colors of blue and gold and memorial plaque with the inscription: "IN HONOR OF COMMANDER DONNIE COCHRAN U.S. NAVY 1976 SAVANNAH STATE COLLEGE/NROTC GRADUATE THE FIRST BLACK NAVAL AVIATOR TO FLY WITH THE BLUE ANGELS FLIGHT DEMONSTRATION TEAM THIS AIRCRAFT IS ON LOAN FROM THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NAVAL AVIATION AT PENSACOLA, FLORIDA" A second plaque was later added which bears the inscription: "IN HONOR OF COMMANDER DONNIE COCHRAN, U.S. NAVY THE FIRST BLACK NAVAL AVIATOR TO COMMAND THE BLUE ANGELS FLIGHT DEMONSTRATION TEAM (NOV 94 - JUNE 96)"

Quotes

* "What I am doing is not just a job, it's an opportunity. I would like to show young people the roads that are open to them in America. Nobody said, here, Donnie, apply for the team, and they will give it to you. You have to earn it".

* "I look at it (being the first African American to become leader of the Blue Angels) as an opportunity to be the boss; not black and white, but an opportunity to command a very special organization".

C-17 GLOBEMASTER III at Arctic Thunder at Elmendorf AFB Anchorage Alaska

C-17 GLOBEMASTER III at Arctic Thunder at Elmendorf AFB Anchorage Alaska

Mission
The C-17 Globemaster III is the newest, most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can also transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations when required. The inherent flexibility and performance of the C-17 force improve the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States.

The ultimate measure of airlift effectiveness is the ability to rapidly project and sustain an effective combat force close to a potential battle area. Threats to U.S. interests have changed in recent years, and the size and weight of U.S.-mechanized firepower and equipment have grown in response to improved capabilities of potential adversaries. This trend has significantly increased air mobility requirements, particularly in the area of large or heavy outsize cargo. As a result, newer and more flexible airlift aircraft are needed to meet potential armed contingencies, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions worldwide. The C-17 is capable of meeting today's demanding airlift missions.

Features
Reliability and maintainability are two outstanding benefits of the C-17 system. Current operational requirements impose demanding reliability and maintainability. These requirements include an aircraft mission completion success probability rate of 92 percent, only 20 aircraft maintenance man-hours per flying hour, and full and partial mission availability rates of 74.7 and 82.5 percent, respectively. The Boeing warranty assures these figures will be met.

The C-17 measures 174 feet long (53 meters) with a wingspan of 169 feet, 10 inches (51.75 meters). The aircraft is powered by four, fully reversible, Federal Aviation Administration-certified F117-PW-100 engines (the military designation for the commercial Pratt & Whitney PW2040), currently used on the Boeing 757. Each engine is rated at 40,440 pounds of thrust. The thrust reversers direct the flow of air upward and forward to avoid ingestion of dust and debris. Maximum use has been made of off-the-shelf and commercial equipment, including Air Force-standardized avionics.

The aircraft is operated by a crew of three (pilot, copilot and loadmaster), reducing manpower requirements, risk exposure and long-term operating costs. Cargo is loaded onto the C-17 through a large aft door that accommodates military vehicles and palletized cargo. The C-17 can carry virtually all of the Army's air-transportable equipment.

Maximum payload capacity of the C-17 is 170,900 pounds (77,519 kilograms), and its maximum gross takeoff weight is 585,000 pounds (265,352 kilograms). With a payload of 169,000 pounds (76,657 kilograms) and an initial cruise altitude of 28,000 feet (8,534 meters), the C-17 has an unrefueled range of approximately 2,400 nautical miles. Its cruise speed is approximately 450 knots (.76 Mach). The C-17 is designed to airdrop 102 paratroopers and equipment.

The design of the aircraft allows it to operate through small, austere airfields. The C-17 can take off and land on runways as short as 3,500 feet (1,064 meters) and only 90 feet wide (27.4 meters). Even on such narrow runways, the C-17 can turn around using a three-point star turn and its backing capability.

Background
The C-17 made its maiden flight on Sept. 15, 1991, and the first production model was delivered to Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., June 14, 1993. The first squadron of C-17s, the 17th Airlift Squadron, was declared operationally ready Jan. 17, 1995. The Air Force originally programmed to buy a total of 120 C-17s, with the last one being delivered in November 2004. Current budget plans involve purchasing 190 aircraft.

The original 120 C-17s were based at Charleston AFB; McChord AFB, Wash., (first aircraft arrived in July 1999); Altus AFB, Okla.; and at an Air National Guard unit in Jackson, Miss. In August 2005, March Air Reserve Base, Calif., began basing the first of eight aircraft. In February 2006, Hickam AFB, Hawaii, received its first C-17.

The C-17 is operated by the Air Mobility Command at the 60th Airlift Wing and the 349th Air Mobility Wing (Associate Reserve) at Travis AFB, Calif.; 62nd Airlift Wing and 446th Airlift Wing (Associate Reserve) at McChord AFB, Wash.; 437th Airlift Wing and 315th Airlift Wing (Associate Reserve) at Charleston AFB, S.C.; the 305th Air Mobility Wing, McGuire AFB, N.J.; and the 172nd Airlift Wing, Mississippi ANG. Additionally, Air Force Materiel Command operates two C-17s at Edwards AFB, Calif., and Pacific Air Forces operates eight aircraft each at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska and Hickam AFB, Hawaii (Associate Guard). The Air Force Reserve Command operates eight aircraft at March Air Reserve Base, Calif; and Air Education and Training Command has 12 airc

Sado Shima-West Coast

Sado Shima-West Coast

Flight AZ 787 Tokyo NAR-Milan MXP------

Sado from the sea
[edit] Political formation of the island
As large number of pottery artifacts found near Ogi in the South of the island prove, Sado was populated as soon as the Jomon period.

The Nihonshoki mentions that Mishihase people visited the island in 544 (although it is unknown whether Tungusic people effectively came).

The island formed a distinct province, the Sado Province, separate from the Echigo province on Honshu, at the beginning of the 8th century. At first, the province was a single gun (district), but was divided into three gun: Sawata, Hamochi and Kamo.

In 1185, the designated representative Shugo for Sado, Osaragi, appointed Honma Yoshihisa as his shugodai (delegate) for the province.

The rule of the Honma clan on Sado lasted until Uesugi Kagekatsu took control of the island in 1589. After the defeat of Uesugi in Sekigahara and gold was discovered around the same time, the shogunate took direct control of the island.

The island was shortly an independent prefecture, called the Aikawa prefecture, between 1871 and 1876, during the Meiji era. It then became a part of Niigata Prefecture, which it is still as of today.

At the end of the 19th century, there were three districts (?), 7 towns (?) and 51 villages (?). During the 20th century a series of mergers steadily reduced the number of political local authorities, following the recent trend in Japan to cut costs of having separately run local administrations. The current city (?) covering the whole island was established on March 1, 2004 in a merger of all remaining municipalities on the island: the city of Ryotsu: the towns of Aikawa, Kanai, Sawata, Hatano, Mano, Hamochi and Ogi; and the villages of Niibo, and Akadomari.

The annual exercise began in 1990 to provide valuable combined air combat training for U.S. and Singapore Air Force fighter units. The exercise allows units to sharpen air combat skills, improve procedures for sustained operations at a non-U.S. base, and promote closer relations between the two air forces and nations. Despite perfect weather our entire trip, the day we were scheduled to fly out of Jomson, always a difficult, unreliable and precarious flight, it rained. We waited 4 hours and at the last possible minute (because they cancel all daily flights at 11 a.m.), the flight from Pokhara arrived and we were cleared to take off.

Pilot Monty

Pilot Monty

Duck!

I just did this, spur of the moment, just fooling around, but it really got me thinking. Just for a moment, entertain the idea that I could have been a pilot, with the lives of literally thousands of people in my capable hands, every day! I was recently asked what I'd be doing if I wasn't doing what I am now (whatever that is) and I immediately answered, "Pilot." That's what I wanted to be.

OK. Well, instead, I'm going to Stampede this year, access all areas, as a lifestyle photographer. This shot was for my credentials.

But I could have been a pilot, I swear it. And, by 38, maybe I'd be flying the big girls around the sky. Who knows? I still have my good eyesight. But... I also often wonder, "Did I dodge a bullet? Do they let diabetics fly?" I'm not a diabetic yet, but I'm very sensitive to sugar. I often worry whether, if I'd been a pilot, a latent hereditary condition would have cut my career short.

That's supposed to be contrails in the back, by the way. No one said this was a quality job!

This was a re-issue of a single for the FIrst Ten Years box set 1980-1990. A total of 10 singles were reissued on 12" vinyl...I forget how often they came out but those of us that collected them hinged everything on the release of the new one LOL!

Two Greeks argue over decision by local bus company to raise ticket prices by up 100%

Activists from the Akriveia - Stop consumer rights group in a protest in the centre of Thessaloniki against the local bus company. Recently OASTH (the Thessaloniki public transport company) decided to raise the cost of tickets by 20 - 100%. The most expensive change was the abolition of the right to transfer from bus to bus for up to 70 minutes without having to by a new ticket, effectively doubling the cost of longer bus journeys. After weeks of protest the bus company reversed its decision but has failed to notify anyone or change the instructions on ticket vending machines.

Happy New Year Everyone !!!

It's going to be a great year.....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some Yellow-Green Vireos are hard to tell apart from the similar Red-Eyed Vireos and thus these two species used to be grouped together as one (Red-Eyed).....
I'd captured this specimen in bleeding plumage back in May in the Yucatan Peninsular and the yellowish flanks unmistakenly idenified this as a Yellow-Green.

This vireo is currently classified Code 3 (Rare) N.American Species by the American Birding Association.

Search on the web only shows a dozen or so good perch shots of this species on both Google and Flickr , and very likely this could be the first flight shot of this species around.

Manchester 2010

Manchester 2010

Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. In 2009, its population was estimated to be 483,800, making it the seventh-most populous local authority district in England. Manchester lies within one of the UK's largest metropolitan areas; the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester had an estimated population of 2,600,100, the Greater Manchester Urban Areaa population of 2,240,230, and the Larger Urban Zone around Manchester, the second-most-populous in the UK, had an estimated population in the 2004 Urban Audit of 2,539,100. The demonym of Manchester is Mancunian.
Manchester is situated in the south-central part of North West England, fringed by theCheshire Plain to the south and the Pennines to the north and east. The recorded history of Manchester began with the civilian vicus associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium, which was established c. CE 79 on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the riversMedlock and Irwell. Historically, most of the city was a part of Lancashire, although areas south of the River Mersey were in Cheshire. Throughout the Middle Ages Manchester remained a manorial township, but began expanding "at an astonishing rate" around the turn of the 19th century as part of a process of unplanned urbanisation brought on by a boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. The urbanisation of Manchester largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era, resulting in it becoming the world's first industrialised city. As the result of an early-19th century factory building boom, Manchester was transformed from a township into a major mill town, borough and was later granted honorific city status in 1853.
Manchester was the site of the world's first railway station, hosted the first meeting of theTrades Union Congress and is where scientists first split the atom and developed the firstprogrammable computer. It is known for its music scene and its sporting connections. Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and its sports clubs include two Premier League football teams, Manchester City and Manchester United. Manchester is the third-most visited city in the United Kingdom by foreign visitors and the most visited in England outside London.

Me, Paul and the iPod.

Me, Paul and the iPod.

March 6th 2010

It's a good weekend. Paul's back north :-)

This morning we picked Susie and Stephen up from Manchester Airport. We are seeing the Stereophonics tomorrow at the MEN Arena in Manchester. I have been a fan of the Stereophonics since I went to Bangor in Wales for my first degree. Paul knew this so grabbed some tickets and got me one as a Christmas gift.

We went straight from the airport to the Trafford Centre. Yes, I was there last night as well. In the car park I saw this van. Loved the name!

The plan was to do a bit of shopping before meeting up with Paul's parents and sister who were coming up to see us all. Paul and I were bit tired and lethargic and spent some time sat on a bench, him on his iPod, me watching the world go by.

After meeting with the others, we all have another mooch around. Eventually we all got thirsty so headed to the Trafford Tavern for a drink. We had to decide where to eat.

After a bit of debate we agreed on tapas. It was busy and we expected a bit of a wait but we got lucky and were seated relatively quickly. I had my fav white fish in batter with mayo, as well as spicy potatoes and deep-fried veg.

After a really good meal and a natter, we headed our separate ways. I took a pic of Paul with Derek the Deal Master. He's a cartoon donkey for a place selling enchilladas. We think it's a funny cartoon, although we worry about the business as it never seems busy.

We all got an early night - Stephen and Susie were up early for their flight, and me and Paul had had a bit of a late night the previous night.

Boarding pass

Boarding pass

Sitting near my gate, checking my boarding pass. This is my first time flying as a "Silver Elite" member and it sure came in handy.

The bus from St. Paul to the airport was late and I was a little worried about missing my flight. I got to the airport, got my bags checked, and only had about a half hour before boarding.

The security lines weren't horrible but they were long and so I traded on my new status to actually get in the Platinum/Gold line and expedite my way through security. That saved a little time!

It left me with just enough free time to pick up a couple items at the gift shop and buy postcard stamps (something I forgot to do while I was in St. Paul).

Only ended up waiting like 5 minutes before boarding.

Nice.

NWA Runs on Windows

NWA Runs on Windows

Boarding in MSP. Status, uncertain.

Trying to hop on an earlier departure. Being charged $25 to free up inventory on a later flight. Apparently, it's good for NWA when Carly does this but not me. She's silver status so not charged.

Who's side is Northwest on?

My Travel Companion

My Travel Companion

I often joke that when we travel, I travel "by myself'. During our recent trip to England, I snapped a picture of my comatose wife and have documented all of those little things that make sleeping at 33,000 feet that much more enjoyable.
