Holyrood - Scotland's Parliament

Now I Love This Shot !
Enlarge photo to original size
The Scottish Parliament Building (Scottish Gaelic: Parlamaid na h-Alba) is the home of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Edinburgh. Construction of the building commenced in June 1999 and the Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) held their first debate in the new building on 7 September 2004. The formal opening by Queen Elizabeth took place on 9 October 2004. Enric Miralles, the Catalan architect who designed the building, died before its completion.

From 1999 until the opening of the new building in 2004, committee rooms and the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament were housed in the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland located on The Mound in Edinburgh. The access to this facility was via a new glazed porch, discreetly placed in the SW corner of Mylne's Court off the Lawnmarket in the midst of some of the University of Edinburgh's Hall of Residences. All traces of this porch were eradicated, and the west wall where it stood returned to a blank wall, immediately after the new parliament opened. Office and administrative accommodation in support of the Parliament were provided in buildings leased from the City of Edinburgh Council. The new Scottish Parliament Building brought together these different elements into one purpose-built parliamentary complex, housing 129 MSPs and more than 1,000 staff and civil servants.

From the outset, the building and its construction have been controversial. The choices of location, architect, design, use of non-indigenous materials (granite from China instead of Scotland), and construction company were all criticised by politicians, the media and the Scottish public.Scheduled to open in 2001,[8] it did so in 2004, more than three years late with an estimated final cost of ?414 million, many times higher than initial estimates of between ?10m and ?40m. A major public inquiry into the handling of the construction, chaired by the former Lord Advocate, Peter Fraser, was established in 2003. The inquiry concluded in September 2004 and criticised the management of the whole project from the realisation of cost increases down to the way in which major design changes were implemented. Despite these criticisms and a mixed public reaction, the building was welcomed by architectural academics and critics. The building aims to conceive a poetic union between the Scottish landscape, its people, its culture, and the city of Edinburgh. This approach won the parliament building numerous awards including the 2005 Stirling Prize and has been described as "a tour de force of arts and crafts and quality without parallel in the last 100 years of British architecture"

Eyemouth,Berwickshire, scotland

Eyemouth,Berwickshire, scotland

Eyemouth (historically spelt Aymouth; Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Eighe[1]) is a small town and parish in Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders. It is two miles (3 km) east of the main north-south A1 road and just 8 miles (13 km) north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. It has a population of circa 3,420 people (2004).

The town's name comes from its location at the mouth of the Eye Water. The Berwickshire coastline consists of high cliffs over deep clear water with sandy coves and picturesque harbours. A fishing port, Eyemouth celebrates an annual Herring Queen Festival. Notable buildings in the town include Gunsgreen House and a cemetery watch house built to stand guard against the Resurrectionists (body snatchers). Many of the features of a traditional fishing village are preserved in the narrow streets and vennels - giving shelter from the sea and well suited to the smuggling tradition of old.

Eyemouth is not far from the attractive small villages of Ayton, Reston, St. Abbs, Coldingham, and Burnmouth. The coast offers opportunities for birdwatching, walking, fishing and diving. Accommodation includes several hotels, B&Bs, and a holiday park. The geology of the area exposes the evidence of folding that led James Hutton to announce that the surface of the earth had changed dramatically over the ages.

Before leaving the motel in Conway, Arkansas, we sang “Happy Birthday” to Jim. We got on the road at 9:24 a.m. on Monday, September 5, 2011. We had breakfast at Hardee’s and Jim stopped at Starbucks. It was a beautiful sunny morning. We traveled on I-40 eastbound into Tennessee. We stopped at the welcome center in Memphis.

We continued eastward on I-40 and had lunch at Krystal in Jackson. We encountered a traffic jam near mile marker 112. Jim got out and talked to a truck driver who said there was an accident involving a tractor and trailer near mile marker 114. We were delayed for approximately an hour and 45 minutes. We ran into rain from Tropical Depression Lee just east of Dickson. The temperature dropped to 59°.

We arrived at Jim’s house in Gallatin, Tennessee, at 7:15 p.m. Central time after driving 401.9 miles on this our last “official” day of travel. We logged a total of 4,729.8 miles through fifteen states during eleven days. If you counted the Byways, Auto Routes, and Trails along with me, you should have 25.

My dear flickr friends, I have enjoyed sharing these images with you. I appreciate your patience for the past few weeks as I inundated you with vacation photos. More than likely it will be two years before I get to take another trip like this. Jim is going with this dad, brother, and grandmother to London next year so I won't have my co-pilot. You will probably not be surprised to learn that I am already planning our 2013 trip. :-))

Abbey of Sant'Antimo, Tuscany

Abbey of Sant'Antimo, Tuscany

Old shot reloaded
Many thanks to everyone who will pass by visiting my shots. Comments are appreciated. You are welcome. Sergio

Hotel room, The Nines

Due to our completely wacky summer temperatures (a high of 106 on this day), Emily, Mac and I checked ourselves into The Nines for a night to take care of the air conditioning. I would've been happy staying anywhere but we stayed here as it only ended up being $96 after taxes, due to a deal I found on Hotwire.

Here's a standard view of our room.

April Sun - Gardening

April Sun - Gardening

The weather's been great all weekend, as it often seems to be on Grand National weekend! Unfortunately I didn't go this year (last year I went for my first stag do and was forced to wear a bright pink suit!). So rather than watch the gee-gee's we spent the weekend gardening :-(!

Since we moved house we haven't installed the water feature so I dug it out of the garage to try to decide where to place it whilst digging borders, preparing for a patio and planting trees. Thought it would make quite a cool shot/self portrait, so there I am digging ..... unorthodox I know!!

Man I'm going to ache tomorrow!

You may as well hit L while you're here!

Urban agriculture.

Sitting again at a 12th floor window of this hotel near Kansai International Airport (Osaka), where I have come to stay for my final night, I have the most wonderful view of the surrounding area. The long bridge across to the airport island, a huge skyscraper overlooking it, the railway line and expressway taking traffic there, a ferris wheel in an amusement park, as well as lots of urban sprawl, a couple of artificial lakes and a huge, floodlit golf cage.

But what most surprises me, is the urban agriculture below -- the many patches of cabbage and onions and other crops which are still to make an appearance in their tidy fields, and all within this urban setting. The farmers pacing their fields, weeding the soil and checking the growth of their plants. The small outhouses here and there, where they keep their tools and provisions. The tiny tractors at work. The fields are tended with care, and it is not surprising that the cabbages look green, leafy and fresh and the onion shoots are growing tall, straight and fat. I have now seen these fields by daylight from above and at night from below and marvel at the intensive cultivation, so tidy, within a stone’s throw of a major city motorway, an express railway line, an international airport and a succession of towns, all part of the great city of Osaka.

Hineno is not the only place where such urban agriculture takes place. While people plant flowers and trees around their houses, they may also include some herbs, and if they have a bit of extra space, kitchen gardens are created. In the parts of Japan I know best, larger fields are devoted to rice, and more rice. And then, there is tea, most famously growing around Shizuoka and Uji, much of it in picturesque small patches, where the bushes are trimmed to round hedge shapes. Elsewhere, I have seen orchards of fruit trees, including apples, pears and oranges. The high mountaintops, if not covered in forests, may hold grassy fields and be browsed by dairy cows. In Honshu, these are often farms open to the general public, where much of the income is achieved from visitors, and dairy products are sold to day trippers. It is Hokkaido where most of the milk for the whole of Japan is produced.

Japan is a densely populated country, with steep mountains covering most of its surface. The population is concentrated in the flat and the hilly countryside. These are also the areas that can be cultivated -- hence, the need to use every square metre of space carefully.

One Cock and a Thousand Crows [EXPLORED]

Last week, I stayed in a hotel in Den Burg, on the Isle of Texel. At dusk, I heard a lot of crows and looking from my balcony I saw dozens of Jackdaws sitting in the Chestnut trees around the church and at the tower. Every 20 seconds or so, a new group of Jackdaws came in, joining the ones that were already there. After 5 minutes or so, a new group came in, flying around the tower and suddenly all birds joined this group and off they went..... Approximately 4,000-5,000 Jackdaws, it was a magnificent view....!!!

The beautiful idyllic island of Mljet

The beautiful idyllic island of Mljet

Mljet (Latin: Melita, Italian: Meleda) is the most southerly and easterly of the larger Adriatic islands of the Dalmatia region of Croatia.

According to the 2001 census, Mljet has population of 1,111. Croats make up an absolute majority with 97.93% of the population.

Mljet lies south of the Peljesac peninsula, from which it is divided by the Mljet Channel. Its length is 23 miles; its average breadth 2 miles (3.2 km). It is of volcanic origin, with numerous chasms and gorges, of which the longest, the Babino Polje, connects the north and south of the island. Port Polace, the principal harbour in the north, is a port of call for tourist ferries. Mljet contains one hotel - The Odisej (from the Greek Odysseus) in the north-west corner of the island.
The northwestern part of the island includes an inland sea as well as a small island within it. It has been a national park since November 12, 1960.
Ancient Greeks called the island "Melita" or "honey" which over the centuries evolved to become the Slavic name, Mljet (pronounced "mill-YET").

Mljet has been discovered by ancient Greco-Roman geographers, whom brought first records and descriptions. The island was first described by Scylax of Caryanda in the 6th century BC others prefer the text, Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax. In both texts it is named Melite and supported by Apollonius of Rhodes. Agathemerus and Pliny the Elder call the island Melita. Agesilaus of Anaxarba, who had been governor of Cilicia, was banished to Mljet by the Roman Emperor Septimus Severus (AD 145-211).
Mljet is mentioned around 950 by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitos in his Of Ruling an Empire as one of the islands held by the Neretvians. The island was often a controversy of ownership between Pagania and Zachlumia until the stronger unifications of the Serbian realm in the 12th century.
Mljet has been regarded as the "Melita" on which Saint Paul was shipwrecked, this view being first expounded in the 10th century, by Eastern Roman Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus. This view conflicts with the historically attested shipwreck of Saint Paul on the Mediterranean island of Malta. A harbour named after the Saint exists on both islands.
The Benedictines from Pulsano in Apulia became the feudal lords of the island in 1151, having come from Monte Gargano in Italy. They came ashore in the Sutmiholjska cove and Serbian Prince Desa of the House of Vojislavljevic built and donated to them the Church and Monastery of Saint Mary on the islet in the Big Lake (1187-1198). Pope Innocent III issued a document consecrating the church in 1198.
The island was under the rule of Stefan Nemanja in 1166-1168. In 1222, the Serbian King Stefan II the First-crowned of Nemanja gifted his lands and monasteries and church on Krkar to the Benedictine Order of Mljet. After serving as the last Serbian maritime bastion, Serbian Emperor Stefan Uros V gifted the island to Balsa I in 1357.
The Benedictines renounced their rule over the island in 1345, keeping only a third of the land. The island got a statute and a municipality in Babino Polje. It was formally annexed by the Republic of Ragusa in 1410. According to the Contract with the Benedictines, the municipality had to pay 300 perpers each year.
In the 16th century, the monastery was the center of the Mljet Congregation (Congregatio Melitensem or Melitanam), gathering all the monasteries of Benedictine monks in the area of the Republic of Ragusa. The first president of the Congregation was Mavro Vetranovic, the abbot of the Mljet monastery and the famous poet. Another great poet was abbot there - Ignjat Durdevic in the 18th century. As time went by, the Benedictine monastery on Mljet lost its importance, while the seat of the Mljet Congregation moved to Sveti Jakov near Ragusa.
In 1809, during the rule of Napoleon, the Mljet monastery was disbanded. When Austria took over the island, it placed the forestry office in the building. Between the world wars, the building was owned by the Rugusa (Dubrovnik) Bishopric. In 1960 it became a hotel, and in 1998 it was returned to the bishopric.
The island has a long history of eco-damage. In order to ease their transport problems, the monks dug a channel to the south coast, from the lake, thus turning both fresh-water lakes into seawater-based ones.
The second incident involves mongooses. These were introduced onto the island in the Middle Ages in order to reduce the snake population (the island was apparently completely overrun). Whilst the mongooses completed this task, they also disposed of pretty much all the birdlife of the island, especially eggs. To this day, the island is notably short of hedgerow birds such as sparrows.

Over 72% of the island of 388 square miles (1,000 km2) is forest. The island's geological structure consists of limestone and dolomite forming ridges, crests and slopes. A few depressions on the island of Mljet are below sea level and are known a

Nashville, TN Gaylord Opryland Hotel just before going underwater

My wife and I visited the Opryland Hotel in the rain on Sunday May 2nd. The majority of the hotel was without electricity and they were frantically pumping out the tunnels in the basement. The guests, that were still there, were all sitting on their balconies since they had no light in their rooms. Cards seemed to be the game of the day. The fountains were not flowing and all the businesses were closed however, the hotel had no problem allowing us to walk around and take pictures. When we left we had a bit of an adventure finding the one nonflooded slot in the parking lot to get off the property. We found out on the news, the next day, that where we were walking was at least 10 feet under water. It still amazes me that the media has virually ignored the plight of Nashville.

2011-05-26 @ tra Amerzgane e il passo di Tizi-n-Tichka

giovedi 26 maggio 2011

A few impression of the beautiful Hotel we had in marrakech.

We first checked in to Hotel Blue Bay Marrakech, but due to Very bad service and the state that the hotel is in (although it was just 14 months old) we called the travel agency to change hotels . We didn't want to spend another night there ! So be warned if you plan to go to Marrakech !
