Titanic - Sea Wolf (1971) (10-track Remaster Edit 2006)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

German reissue of the Euro-rock act's classic 1971 album includes one bonus track, 'Sing Fool Sing'.

I heard the single Macumba a couple of Years ago and it was my first approach to Titanic. Of course i didn't know it was from them at that time. Later, the radio Futuro started saying the name of the Bands and i heard the name "Titanic" for the first time. After that, my boss ( a very good rocker ) shared with me the discs Eagle Rock and Sea Wolf and i started to like the Band. I learned they were from Norway and that they were heavy influenced by Santana.
I give the disc a 5 stars rating, because their sound is really awesome and is a band which Norway must be proud of...H. Opitz

ZZ Top - Greatest Hits (1992)(Remaster 2002)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

2002 'Special Limited Tour Edition' reissue of 1992 compilation includes a laminated tour pass & slipcase. 18 tracks.

This isn't a perfect roundup of ZZ Top's superstar years of the '80s, but it comes pretty close. It dips back into the '70s for "Pearl Necklace" and "La Grange," with a couple of selections from the post-peak '90s, but this does offer the MTV-era basics: "Gimme All Your Lovin'," "Sharp Dressed Man," "Rough Boy," "Tush," "My Head's in Mississippi," "Doubleback," "Cheap Sunglasses," "Sleeping Bag." What slows this record down are some new cuts and album tracks that don't deserve to be here, along with a remix, not the original version, of "Legs." Still, that may just be quibbling for some listeners, since the basics are all here, making this a good complement to the '70s-focused The Best of ZZ Top (although it would be nice if a definitive disc, with all the hits, would appear on the market)...S. The Hollies - French '60s EP Collection, Vol. 1(1996) (24-trach Digipack Remaster 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered collection of the hit British Invasion pop group's best for EMI in the '60s, 24 tracks total. Gatefold slipcase. 2001release.

At a glance this looks like a more or less random assortment of 22 early Hollies tracks. The only thing connecting them is the appearance of the first 19 of the songs on five French EPs released during the 1960s. It's a tenuous concept for an anthology (though the Magic label isn't the only company to employ it), and though there's much good music here, this isn't the most sensible way to go about collecting the Hollies, whether you're looking for their best work or all of their work. For one thing, none of those 19 EP tracks are rare; in fact, some of them ("Just One Look," "Here I Go Again," "Bus Stop," "I Can't Let Go," "I'm Alive," "Look Through Any Window") are hits, albeit very good hits, that have appeared on too many releases to count. For another, although there are some good seldom-noted B-sides here, most of them have appeared on more comprehensive CD anthologies -- "You Know He Did," "Hey What's Wrong With Me," "Nobody," "So Lonely," "Don't Run and Hide," "Now's the Time," and "I've Got a Way of My Own" all appear on the three-CD 30th Anniversary Collection of career highlights. So what's to entice the driven completist? Well, the three "bonus tracks" include a French-language version of "Look Through Any Window" and a rare alternate version of "Yes I Will" that's noticeably different from the common one on the hit single, albeit less polished and a little inferior to the one used on the 45. (The other bonus track, the B-side "Come on Back," isn't terribly rare, appearing on the aforementioned 30th Anniversary Collection; even the two other bonus tracks have appeared on other full-length compilation releases.) There's also a booklet with color reproductions of the French EPs from which most of the tracks were taken, if you go for that sort of thing. ~ Richie Unterberger

Gentle Giant - In'terview (1976) (Digipak Remaster 2010)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Re-Mastered from the original 1/4 inch tapes thru 24bit 96k Hi-Resolution Transfer.

There is nothing more confusing to me in the musical world than the "ho-hum" attitude many GG fans adopt toward this album. THIS IS A FLAT-OUT MASTERPIECE! Are you even listening to the same album as me? After Interview, the band's experimental bug-up-the-ass seems to have finally found its way out, never to fully return; and although they would still make great music, they would never reach the dazzling heights of albums such as this one again. So what do we have here? Easily a contender for one of their top best works, Interview contains some of their most aggressive and electrified music yet. The lead off title-track is possibly GG's most "epic" song, with the fattest bass and organ riffs I've ever heard as well as some furious piano jams and even an electric sitar section! The song's finale is yet another "head exploding moment" and must be heard to be believed. Next we get the deceptively ingenious "Give It Back" which, superficially, has an almost reggae vibe to it; however, after a few listens you begin to see just how many complex musical workouts they managed to pack into that sucker, and the melodies begin to get stuck in your head, and it's all over. A track like none other in their catalog, "Give It Back" is a unique and extremely rewarding musical gem. And then comes "Design". I bet a lot of people won't like "Design", precisely because it is the most experimental and off-the-wall recording the band ever made -- and saying that about THIS band, is really saying something! Driven solely by vocals and various percussion instruments, the boys veer from "pretty" into "uhhh..." territory and back again several times, but don't you lose focus, because half way through the track is hidden a mind-bending vocal jigsaw puzzle that ranks up with "Knots" and "On Reflection" as the band's peak in complex vocal writing. Ultimately, "Design" is one of the most adventurous pieces of music you will ever hear. The remaining tracks (I can't describe them all!) are all masterful and perfect, so just go check it out -- and please, don't ever let me hear anyone say "Up through Free Hand, all of Gentle Giant's albums are excellent..." again! NO! Happy listening...corbet

Gentle Giant - Interview (1976) (35th Anniversary Edition 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Interview is Gentle Giant's last great album, here reissued in glittering state-of-the-art sound and with a bonus track appended. Even at this late date in the history of progressive rock, with most groups in the field either folding altogether or trimming their sails, Gentle Giant were busy coming up with songs built on strange (and strangely juxtaposed) tempos and harmonies -- indeed, there are shifts in tempo here that make anything on, say, ELP's Tarkus (where the choice of time signatures nearly blew the group apart) look tame. And it's all remastered for an up-close-and-personal experience of Kerry Minnear's keyboards (more diverse than ever), Ray Shulman's bass, and Gary Green's multiple guitars. The album has also been expanded with the inclusion of a live version of the title track from a July 1976 New York show -- the recording quality isn't quite ideal, and they haven't got quite the same command of this piece that they did of, say, "Experience" from In a Glass House, but it's still a helpful if not a revelatory addition...B. Deep Purple - Live at Inglewood (1968) (Remaster 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

2009 archive live release from the British rockers' Mk 1 line-up. So little evidence of this line-up's live act remains that this tape, the only surviving recording of the first incarnation of Deep Purple on stage, is of great interest, with the band exhibiting a brash confidence in front of 16,000 Cream fans. As a support act, Deep Purple's set was a little shorter than normal but despite the passing of over 40 years, it's still an exciting experience. The sound, taken from an original Sony open reel, isn't bad at all once you get used to the ambience, with just a little distortion in the second number and someone in the audience heard near the microphone at one or two quiet moments. It was first released officially several years ago by Sonic Zoom but has been long out of print. Due to many requests it has now been added to the immensely popular Official Archive Collection, with a new cover, and a 12 page booklet.

This is the only known live recording of the Rod Evans Era Deep Purple. It was recorded during their supporting slot on the 1968 Cream Farewell Tour. As far as sound quality goes, this is a bootleg; it is easily the least listenable of the archival live Deep Purple releases so far. But it is worth having simply because it is a decent companion to the first three Purple LPs that feature Rod Evans as lead singer. Musically,it is easy to see why Blackmore sacked Evans from the band: he sounded great on the band's psychedelic/prog studio albums but was unable to properly front the live sonic aggressive/metal assault that they were fast becoming. This concert is only an hour long. All of the songs are,(by Deep Purple standards,)fairly short with the exception of Mandrake Root and River Deep Mountain High which run almost 10 minutes each. The best players here are Jon Lord,Ian Paice and Nick Simper; Evans sings well and Ritchie Blackmore simply sucks. He has always been a hot or cold player and here he is simply frozen. He sounds like he has no idea where to take this music; his only moment of redemption is the soloing in Wring That Neck. Jon Lord sounds like a true revelation, his classical training is upfront on several of his solos, especially during Mandrake Root and in the 2001 Space Odyssey opening to River Deep Mountain High. Ian Paice is always a joy and seems totally unable to play badly. Indeed,if you can get past the boiler room sound quality of this disk there is much here to be enjoyed. The Mark 1 Deep Purple has always been my favourite and it's nice to see that they could cut it in concert even at this embryonic stage in their career...P. Roubuy

Joe Walsh - The Smoker You Drink... (1973) (24 kt. Gold Disc Remaster 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get, Walsh's second solo studio album, continues the heavy and light rock mix of tracks found on his previous release Barnstorm. Indeed, the opening two tracks bear this out. The first, perhaps Joe Walsh's most recognized track, "Rocky Mountain Way," comes replete with overly distorted guitars and the obligatory solo. The next song, "Bookends," is a tuneful ode to happy memories. Walsh's ability to swing wildly from one end of the rock scale to the other is unparalleled and makes for an album to suit many tastes. Joe Vitale (drums, flute, backing vocals, keyboards, and synthesisers † a talented man) and Kenny Passarelli (bass and backing vocals) are once again employed, and once again prove themselves adept at handling Walsh's various styles. The album sees an addition to the backing band in the form of Rocke Grace on keyboards and vocals. The legendary Bill Szymczyk works along with Walsh to handle the production, and takes care of the mixing. Szymczyk's work on this area is as always astounding. The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get features some of the most remembered Joe Walsh tracks, but it's not just these that made the album the success it was. Each of the nine tracks is a song to be proud of. This is a superb album by anyone's standards...B. Davies

Dire Straits - On Every Street (1991) (SHM-CD 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic 1991 album. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

It took Mark Knopfler more than six years to craft a followup to Dire Straits' international chart-topper, Brothers In Arms, but though On Every Street sold in the expected multi-millions worldwide on the back of the band's renown and a year-long tour, it was a disappointment. Knopfler remained a gifted guitar player with tastes in folk ("Iron Hand"), blues ("Fade To Black"), and rockabilly ("The Bug"), among other styles, but much of the album was low-key to the point of being background music. The group had long-since dwindled to original members Knopfler and bassist John Illsley, plus a collection of semi-permanent sidemen who provided support but no real musical chemistry. The closest thing to a successor to "Money For Nothing," the big hit from Brothers In Arms, was the sarcastic rocker "Heavy Fuel." It became an album rock radio favorite (though not a chart single), and fans still filled stadiums to hear "Sultans Of Swing," but On Every Street was not the comeback it should have been...W. ELO (ft. Olivia Newton-John) - Xanadu (1980) (Digipak Remaster 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The soundtrack to the 1980 movie Xanadu featured songs on side one of the album written by John Farrar and performed by Olivia Newton-John, and songs on side two performed by the Electric Light Orchestra which were composed by lead singer Jeff Lynne. The album was a Top 5 success in the UK and the US (where it was certified double platinum), and peaked at no.1 in Newton-John's native Australia.

Hollywood never learns. Hot on the heels of box-office failures Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Can't Stop the Music, comes the roller-skating Olivia Newton John in Xanadu. This soundtrack is fluff stuff to be sure, but some pearls float amongst the mire. Lead-off "Magic" remains a fine single. "Suddenly," a duet ONJ ekes out with British luminary Cliff Richard, seems better than most love themes. The sudden appearance of the Tubes almost saves the doomed swing/rock hybrid "Dancin," but the two styles should never meet. The second half glows from the Electric Light Orchestra, soaring at its commercial height, escaping this crippling fairy tale fairly untarnished with three more hit bits: "I'm Alive," "All Over the World," and the Olivia Neutron Bomb showcase title track. "Don't Walk Away" and "The Fall" stand as two of Jeff Lynne's finest, thus the flip nukes the front which should stay stuck to the theater floor. Listening to this soundtrack may beat watching the actual film, but know that if you didn't dig Xanadu when it came out, the platter gains nothing through time. Doug Stone

The Tremeloes - The Story Of The Tremeloes (2Cd Remaster Set 1993)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It's difficult for anyone who has heard them not to like -- or even love -- the Tremeloes. They were one of the more prodigiously talented British pop/rock bands of the 1960s, and they threw that talent into the making of amazingly catchy and well-crafted singles that lit up the charts and radio on both sides of the Atlantic for four years running, from 1966 through 1970. Their version of "Twist and Shout" managed to rise to number four on the English charts, despite running up head-to-head with the Beatles' recording. Their next record, a cover of the Contours' hit "Do You Love Me," was a classic of the era, an honest, authentic-sounding screamer of a single that hit number one in England once the Beatles' "She Loves You" vacated the spot, and managed to eclipse a rival version by the Dave Clark Five. In its wake, Brian Poole & the Tremeloes managed a series of respectable, even occasionally inspired hits over the next two years, including a U.K. Top Ten cover of Roy Orbison's "Candy Man" and a convincingly raucous rendition of the Strangeloves' Bo Diddley-beat-driven anthem "I Want Candy." Yet, the Tremeloes are also one of the least known and least respected of 1960s English bands. The precise reason for the lack of respect is difficult to pin down, except perhaps that their timing was out, as far as making the most of their success -- they generally didn't write their own material, and they cut their best singles long after the British Invasion (and the mystique surrounding the bands that were part of it) had ended. And, yet, ironically, the Tremeloes are also one of the longest surviving English rock & roll bands, still playing regularly more than 40 years after the group's founding

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Skynyrd's First (Remaster Edit 1998)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This may be the greatest unissued first album ever to surface from a major band. The story behind the 78 minutes of music on this CD, cut two years before Lynyrd Skynyrd's official debut album, could fill a chapter of a book. Cut primarily during late June and late July of 1971, with a quintet of 1972-vintage tracks added, they constitute Skynyrd's complete studio recordings from the period when they were still trying to get signed and were playing lots of small-time local gigs for barely enough money to live on. Seven of the songs were released on the 1978 album Skynyrd's First and...Last, and three others appear on the 1991 box set, while "Comin' Home" turned up on The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd earlier that same year, but this is the first time this potent body of work has been assembled properly, in one place. And, additionally, one previously unissued track by itself justifies the price of this disc -- the original demo version of "Free Bird," on which the soaring harmonies, Billy Powell's beautiful piano, and the Collins-Rossington guitar duo plays with startling fire and lyricism. Several of the tracks do contain overdubs laid on in the mid-'70s (mostly Ed King's bass and some guitar, and even a Mellotron on "White Dove" -- it would be great to hear that song without the electronic string section), but this is still the band at its most raw and unaffected, in terms of what the core members are playing. Ronnie Van Zant's singing was not only powerful, but beautiful at this stage of his career, and the group's playing -- especially the Rossington-Collins double lead guitar attack -- is filled with a fresh spirit of experimentation and adventure that makes these tracks essential listening for anyone who has ever enjoyed this band's work. Evidently, the material and related demos scared the crap out of most record company executives when they were shown around in 1971-1972, and it's easy to see why -- the sound is fierce, the songs not only boldly played but boldly written as well (even the Rick Medlocke-written and sung "The Seasons" is a killer piece of semi-acoustic country-rock), and running anywhere from five to ten minutes apiece. Anyway, most record company executives being inherent cowardly, or stupid, or both, it's easy to see them running from the room over these sounds. Anyone who owns any of Lynyrd Skynyrd's releases should add this magnificent lost chapter in the group's history...B. Eder

Nine of the 17 tracks on this historical curio surfaced on the 1978 LP Skynyrd's First and... Last, but more than a quarter of a century passed between the 1971/'72 sessions that produced these germinating tracks and their full appearance. Skynyrd's First: The Muscle Shoals Album documents a group of young musicians finding their footing, but by no means is it an amateurish affair. While ongoing personnel shifts are in evidence (only Ronnie Van Zant, Albert Collins, and Gary Rossington from the classic lineup appear throughout), the playing and writing is surprisingly tight. It's easy to see why veteran session man Jimmy Johnson, the producer of the sessions, insisted: "I had never heard a band that were that well rehearsed and had their songs together." The excellent liner notes make this package all the more appealing to Lynyrd loyalists...S. Stolder

I purchased Sleepless: The Concise King Crimson because I was thoroughly impressed with the track listing. Although an abridged version of "In The Court Of The Crimson King" and "Starless" are here, this is still a worthwhile compilation for introduction to the sometimes schizophrenic world of King Crimson. I highly recommend it!...A. Ruckett

The Police - Regatta de Blanc (1979) (Japan Mini Lp 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Enhanced Japanese pressing of the Police's second album. Originally released in 1979, Regatta De Blanc features the hits 'Message In A Bottle', 'The Bed's Too Big Without You' and 'Walking On The Moon'.

I bought this version, the Japanese remaster, to see if there was an improvement in sound over my original 80's A&M release. This version sounds a lot better, the most improvement being in the areas of stereo separation and the bass sound. Sting was never known for having a cutting bass sound; it is cleaned up here to his advantage. The cymbals on the drums are better here, as well. However, the original CD release didn't sound bad to my ears. One has to consider the source - this was made at Surrey Sound Studios, which was not a state-of-the-art facility, so this is no Pink Floyd - esque recording in sound quality to begin with. If you are picky about sound, and love The Police, this is well worth the money...P. Surgener

Scorpions - The Platinum Collection (3 Disc Set 2006)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Platinum Collection is a veritable archive of hits, combining the band's greatest with all the old favorites for the very first time! With 52 million albums sold worldwide and over 4500 live concerts, the Scorpions are not just Germany's most successful rock band, they are continental Europe's most successful group ever! This boxed set of 3 CD's contains the first representative summary of the Scorpions' unique career spanning four decades of rock music history! A must-have for all rock fans, not to mention countless Scorpions fans!

If your looking for something different, than pick up this collection. Although the songs sound familar, most of them are mixed differently than the studio albums you may be familar with. Much of the earlier tracks sound like demos and at times can be distracting but interesting. Give this disc a listen and you will understand what I'm talking about...M. Jacositz

Steve Miller Band - Young Hearts (2 CD Remaster Edit 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Subtitled - Complete Greatest Hits. Finally, a Steve Miller best-of with 'Livin' in the USA', 'Abracadabra!', 'The Joker', 'Jungle Love' & much more. 25 remastered cuts covering his 35 years with Capitol all on two CD!

At his best, Steve Miller offered great rock & roll thrills -- sleek, insidiously catchy, relentlessly propulsive, effervescent pop gems, songs that were possessed with their own cheerful momentum that proved irresistible and surprisingly enduring. At his best, he made rock & roll that evoked its time but transcended it since its song and studiocraft were precisely executed, and never running longer than needed; like all perfect pop or rock singles, they sound too short since you'd want them to last forever. Unfortunately, Miller at his very best is ten, maybe 12 (and if you're kind, maybe 14) songs, much shorter than the generous Complete Greatest Hits, which clocks in at 22 tracks. Strangely enough, that title is a bit disingenuous, since this does not contain all of Miller's charting singles, which, strangely enough, clock in at 20 tracks, if all the Billboard charts are used as a guideline. Of those 20 singles, a whole bunch are missing: "Your Cash Ain't Nothin' but Trash," "Going to the Country," "Heart Like a Wheel," "Circle of Love," "Give It Up," "Shangri-La," "Bongo Bongo," "Nobody but You Baby," and "Cool Magic." That's nine songs, nearly half of his charting singles. Then again, charting singles don't really tell the story of Miller and his band, since they were more popular on album-oriented radio than they were on the charts, which is why songs like "Space Cowboy," "Wild Mountain Honey," and "Dance Dance Dance" are better known than "Bongo Bongo." Nevertheless, if the compilers of this compilation were going to take its title seriously, these songs would be present (even if Miller seems to have disowned 1981's Circle of Love, since it's out of print and none of its singles are here), along with the cuts that remain staples of AOR to this day. Instead, it's a bit of a hodgepodge, containing all but three tracks from the classic Greatest Hits 1974-1978, plus the three other songs every listener wants: "Abracadabra," "Livin' in the U.S.A.," and "Space Cowboy." If those three tracks were substituted for those missing from Greatest Hits 1974-1978, this wouldn't be just the great Miller album; it would be one of the great rock guilty pleasures, the kind of records everybody would own but all serious rock geeks would be ashamed to have, even if they play it far more than Trout Mask Replica. But this collection meanders, adding a bunch of latter-day songs that are largely unknown. Some of them are good -- 1993's "Wide River," if given a better production, could be mistaken for the Steve Miller Band at its peak -- but by and large, they slow this record down more than necessary. What makes this recommended -- and, make no mistake, it is -- is that it contains that core 12 to 14 songs that would make for one of the great rock albums. What keeps it from essential is the eight to ten songs that surround them, particularly since this starts off so strong, and then peters out, saving "Dance Dance Dance" for a last hurrah. Even so, this is the only place to go for all of Miller's hits (not counting the 1999 Australia collection, which has a similar feel but a slightly sharper track selection and a little leaner 20-track running time). But keep this in mind: if you want a party, you want Greatest Hits 1974-1978, since the feel and the groove is the same, and it clocks in at 14 tracks and 47 minutes -- perfect length for repeated plays. At the end of the exhaustive Complete Greatest Hits you're pretty much exhausted -- glad you have the key songs in your collection, wishing that the disc itself was as sleek and irresistible as the best tunes here...S. Erlewine

The Who - Live at Royal Albert Hall (3CD Set 2000)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After completing the tour of North America in December, 1982, Townshend spent part of 1983 trying to write material for the next studio Who album. By the end of 1983, however, Townshend had declared himself unable to generate material which he felt was appropriate for The Who and he issued a public statement in December, 1983, wherein he announced his decision to leave The Who. With Townshend formally ending The Who as an entity producing new music. Over the years, The Who re-united many times for various concerts.

"Live at the Royal Albert Hall" captures a charity concert for a cancer organization the reunited group performed in November of 2000. This is an exceptional reunion concert, finding the band at their strongest since their early-'80s breakup. Supported by drummer Zak Starkey and longtime keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle sound reinvigorated, playing such standards as "I Can't Explain" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" with vigor and energy, as if they haven't played them countless times. The group also stretches out, as Townshend contributes a new bridge to "The Kids Are Alright" and the band jams through "Magic Bus," "5:15," and "Won't Get Fooled Again," showing both dexterity and muscle. While nobody would mistake this show with the careening power and unpredictability of the band at their peak in the '60s and '70s, this is an impressive mix of maturity, professionalism, and passion, finding the group regaining their sense of authority and integrity. At three discs, this is a bit long, but for those longtime fans, there's plenty to like here. After all, it's very rare for a reunion album to be this good, and it's even rarer to have one with cameos as good as those here -- Townshend's duet with Paul Weller on "So Sad About Us" and two songs fronted by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder ("I'm One," "Getting in Tune") are as good as those songs by Daltrey, and help make Live at the Royal Albert Hall a really pleasant surprise.

The bonus CD features four songs from The Who's last concert with John Entwistle before his death, from February 8, 2002.

Roger Daltrey - Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals

Dire Straits - Live At The BBC (1995) (SHM-CD 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese-only two disc SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic 1984 album. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

It's hard to imagine that Dire Straits ever played to half-empty halls, or that they were anything other than a slick well-oiled musical touring machine. This album demonstrates that even bands with success the size of Dire Straits' have to start somewhere. The main chunk of the album (all bar the last track, "Tunnel of Love") is taken from their debut British tour. Opening, as their first album did, with "Down to the Waterline" you can hear how "organic" the interplay of the four musicians was. Mark Knopfler's lead guitar has a nice rough edge to it that makes his guitar lines leap outmore….Pick Withers' strong backbeat makes "Six Blade Knife", a brooding studio track, a fairly big rock beast here, with a great guitar solo in the mid section and a finale that builds and builds before coming crashing down - the band did this to great effect in stadiums (where Knopfler didn't forget the words, like he does here!), but you can hear Knopfler experimenting with dramatic endings at this early stage."Water of Love" provides a good break from all the electric guitar playing with some great slide on the steel guitar. The rhythm section (all four of them!) is right on the money on this track. John Illsley's playing is intelligent, Withers' timekeeping excellent and David Knopfler's guitar playing solid and Mark's lead/rhythm playing is something special."Wild West End" also benefits from the live treatment, coming over much better than it ever did in the studio. It's rough and ready, but it's very tight - and very good. It's lamentable that Knopfler never wrote someting like this in the eighties. This is probably the only generally available recording of a band announcing their debut single to a silent house. "Sultans of Swing" is near-perfect (the ending is a bit messy) and sounds absolutely great - better than it did on either 'Alchemy' or the sleep-fest that was 'On The Night'. Play this track loud!"Lions", the closing track on the debut studio album, again shows what a great bunch of musicians emerged from Deptford in July 1977. The writing's brilliant, as is the musicianship. The Knopflers demonstrate how well they used to work on stage before it all went sour. There's another strong ending here, as Mark's lead and David's rhythm start piling it on in the play out."What's The Matter, Baby?", co-written by the brothers Knopfler, is a previously unreleased track. The song is very good, apart from having a dreadful title and dodgy lyrics ("You're running in the shadows every time you hear the wild man howl"! ).For some reason, someone decided to put "Tunnel of Love" on the end of this compilation. Why? It's obviously a bigger hall, the band are now as slippery-smooth as a greased pole and, as good as the performance is, it lacks the energy of the preceding seven tracks. The recording is a bit boomy too. It would've been better to use the 12 minutes with two or three more songs from the first gig. Still, it's a good showcase of Knopfler's brilliance as a writer and guitarist. It's great to hear these songs without the sterility associated with Dire Straits in their later years. It's a must for Dire Straits fans and something everyone should hear at least once...DD. Jellinc

J. Geils Band - Houseparty: The J. Geils Band Anthology (2 CD Remaster 1993)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The 38 tracks on the two-CD set, "The J. Geils Band Anthology," were arranged out of chronological order so the first 10 songs on the second disc could all be live recordings. Those songs give you a good sense of what the second set at a J. Geils show sounded like back in the days when the band was the most exciting blues-rock band in the land. On stage, the sextet would expand the boundaries of the blues to include everything from Stax and Motown to jackhammer rhythms and screaming solos, and that roadhouse party attitude carried over into a series of hit studio recordings.

The J. Geils Band was one of the most popular touring rock & roll bands in America during the '70s. Where their contemporaries were influenced by the heavy boogie of British blues-rock and the ear-splitting sonic adventures of psychedelia, the J. Geils Band was a bar band pure and simple, churning out greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes, cutting them with a healthy dose of Stonesy swagger. While their muscular sound and the hyper jive of frontman Peter Wolf packed arenas across America, it only rarely earned them hit singles. Seth Justman, the group's main songwriter, could turn out catchy R&B-based rockers like "Give It to Me" and "Must of Got Lost," but these hits never led to stardom, primarily because the group had trouble capturing the energy of its live sound in the studio. In the early '80s, the group tempered its driving rock with some pop, and the makeover paid off with the massive hit single "Centerfold," which stayed at number one for six weeks. By the time the band prepared to record a follow-up, tensions between Justman and Wolf had grown considerably, resulting in Wolf's departure, which quickly led to the band's demise. After working for years to reach to top of the charts, the J. Geils Band couldn't stay there once they finally achieved their goal.

Guitarist J. Geils, bassist Danny Klein, and harpist Magic Dick (born Richard Salwitz) began performing as an acoustic blues trio sometime in the mid-'60s. In 1967, drummer Stephen Jo Bladd and vocalist Peter Wolf joined the group, and the band went electric. Before joining the J. Geils Band, Bladd and Wolf played together in the Boston-based rock revivalist band the Hallucinations. Both musicians shared a love of arcane doo wop, blues, R&B, and rock & roll, and Wolf had become well-known by spinning such obscure singles as a jive-talking WBCN DJ called Woofuh Goofuh. Wolf and Bladd's specialized tastes became a central force in the newly revamped J. Geils Band, whose members positioned themselves as tough '50s greasers in opposition to the colorful psychedelic rockers who dominated the East Coast in the late '60s. Soon, the band had earned a sizable local following, including Seth Justman, an organist who was studying at Boston University. Justman joined the band in 1968, and the band continued to tour for the next few years, landing a record contract with Atlantic in 1970.

The J. Geils Band was a regional hit upon its early 1970 release, and it earned favorable reviews, especially from Rolling Stone. The group's second album, The Morning After, appeared later that year and, thanks to the Top 40 hit "Looking for a Love," the album expanded the band's following. However, the J. Geils Band continued to win new fans primarily through their concerts, so it was no surprise that their third album, 1972's Full House, was a live set. It was followed by Bloodshot, a record that climbed into the Top Ten on the strength of the Top 40 hit "Give It to Me." Following the relative failure of 1973's Ladies Invited, the band had another hit with 1974's Nightmares, which featured the number 12 single "Must of Got Lost." While their live shows remained popular throughout the mid-'70s, both Hot Line (1975) and the live Blow Your Face Out (1976) were significant commercial disappointments. The band revamped its sound and shortened its name to "Geils" for 1977's Monkey Island. While the album received good reviews, the record failed to bring the group increased sales.

In 1978, the J. Geils Band left Atlantic Records for EMI, releasing Sanctuary later that year. Sanctuary slowly gained a following, becoming their first gold album since Bloodshot. Love Stinks (1980) expanded the group's following even more, peaking at number 18 in the charts and setting the stage for 1981's Freeze Frame, the band's high watermark. Supported by the infectious single "Centerfold" -- which featured a memorable video that received heavy MTV airplay -- and boasting a sleek, radio-ready sound, Freeze Frame climbed to number one. "Centerfold" shot to the top of the charts late in 1981, spending six weeks at number one; its follow-up, "Freeze-Frame," was nearly as successful, reaching number four in the spring of 1982. The live album Showtime! became a gold album shortly after its late 1982 release.

While the band was experiencing the greatest commercial success of its career, relationships between the members, particularly writing partners Justman and Wolf, were volatile. When the group refused to record material Wolf had written with Don Covay and Michael Jonzun, he left the band in the middle of a 1983 recording session. Justman assumed lead vocals, and the group released You're Gettin' Even While I'm Gettin' Odd in late 1984, several months after Wolf's successful solo debut, Lights Out. The J. Geils Band's record was a failure, and the band broke up in 1985. Magic Dick and J. Geils reunited in 1993 to form a contemporary blues band that has released two CDs, Bluestime and Little Car Blues. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Titanic - Eagle Rock (1973) (Digipak Remaster 2000)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally Remastered. Reissue of the Third Album from the British-Norwegian Rockband which was Originally Released in 1973.

"Eagle Rock" - probably the best album of "Titanic" which came originally from Oslo, Norway (circa 1969). The band was smart enough to sign British-born Roy Robinson as lead singer (who contributed as lyricist). Forget Sanatana's influence - this is a full-blast top-class hard-rock band with the strong inclination towards prog. Let's say one can feel immediately the influence of mature Deep Purple and the inspiration from Rare Bird (As Your Mind Flies By. By the way, the vocals are almost as good as Steve Gould's, and the guitars and Hammond you can judge for yourself.
Although signed by prestigeous "Columbia" the band didn't make it due to various reasons, but should be placed as equal among the peers. This release from "Repertoire" comes with the notes by Chris Welch, and is worth every cent...G. Alexey

Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1968) (SHM CD Remaster 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

With its endless, droning minor-key riff and mumbled vocals, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is arguably the most notorious song of the acid rock era. According to legend, the group was so stoned when they recorded the track that they could neither pronounce the title "In the Garden of Eden" or end the track, so it rambles on for a full 17 minutes, which to some listeners sounds like eternity. But that's the essence of its appeal -- it's the epitome of heavy psychedelic excess, encapsulating the most indulgent tendencies of the era. Iron Butterfly never matched the warped excesses of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," either on their debut album of the same name or the rest of their catalog, yet they occasionally made some enjoyable fuzz guitar-driven psychedelia that works as a period piece. The five tracks that share space with their magnum opus on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida qualify as good artifacts, and the entire record still stands as the group's definitive album, especially since this is the only place the full-length title track is available...S. Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1968) (8-track Deluxe Edit 2006)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Iron Butterfly's 1968 album veritably defined the burgeoning genre of hard-rock, primarily by way of its utterly over-the-top title cut. Reportedly composed by keyboardist/lead singer Doug Ingle in such a stoned-out, numb-tongued condition that he couldn't properly pronounce its intended title--"In the Garden of Eden"--the track seemed almost a parody of every excessive inclination of psychedelia. Melodramatic vocals, repetitive riffing, aimless solos--you name it, this 17-minute behemoth had it. Aided by FM DJs who loved to program it in its entirety so they could take "legitimate" breaks, it became an unavoidable hit--and an anthem of its era...B. Altman

Jefferson Airplane - The Essential (2CD Remaster Edit 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

RCA/Legacy's 32-track Jefferson Airplane retrospective focuses on the influential psychedelic rock collective's late-'60s/early-'70s heydays. From 1966 (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off) through 1972 (Thirty Seconds Over Winterland), the group released nine albums that effectively shadowed the era, blending social themes with drugs, paranoia, and youthful rebellion/revolution. Essential may be a bit much for the casual fan, as its two discs delve deep into the group's eclectic catalog, stacking lost gems like "Eskimo Blue Day" and "Third Week in the Chelsea" alongside radio staples like "Somebody to Love," "White Rabbit," and "Volunteers," but those who are willing to take the plunge will be rewarded with the band's most thorough, informative, and thoughtfully paced anthology to date...R. Golden Earring - Moontan US (1973) (Remaster Edit 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Import remastered reissue of the long running Dutch rock act's 1973 album.

This is the US pressing, which contains "Big Tree, Blue Sea" whose original version is on Golden Earring and leaves out "Suzy Lunacy" and "Just Like Vince Taylor" along with the racier cover art on the European pressing. "Blue Sea" is a fantastic, musically adventerous track by itself, almost exactly anticipating Heavy Horses_era Tull by a full five years! Having indulged themselves and surprised the listener with the extremes of their artier tendencies, there are blasts of dense hard rock ("Candy's Gone Bad"), complex riffing and generous quantities of strings and well-used horns ("Vanilla Queen") and then there's the single. its much easier to digest after all these times in the context of the rest of the album. Im constantly surprised how much this band's best output has been ignored by reviewers when considering great music in this decade. You could fit it into prog-rock or hard rock categories in equal parts. This is the ultimate driving album. THE album to own by this band.

Golden Earring - Moontan EU (1973) (Remaster Edit 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This 1973 outing is the album that raised Golden Earring to an international level of popularity, primarily on the strength of the hit single and enduring radio favorite "Radar Love." However, there is much more to this album than just that hit. In many ways, Moontan is like a summation of everything the group had learned on their first three albums. It presents a similar combination of prog epics, heavy rockers, and songs that combine both elements, but everything is raised to a new level of inspiration and polish. It starts with a bang thanks to "Candy's Going Bad," a piece that starts off asmore… a thunderous, pounding rocker but transforms midway into a bluesy instrumental mood piece. Other highlights include the hit single "Radar Love," a relentless rock tune with a left-field instrumental break in which tribal drums duel with a big band-style horn section, and "Just Like Vince Taylor," a guitar-slinging slice of boogie rock that pays tribute to the fallen rock idol of the title. The album also includes what may be the group's finest prog effort in "Vanilla Queen": this classic builds from pulsating, ominous verses dominated by synthesizer into a hard-rocking chorus and also throws in a stark acoustic guitar midsection before climaxing in a frantic band jam augmented by blaring horns and an ever-spiraling string section. Despite the album's overall strength, not every song reaches these heights: "Are You Receiving Me?" recycles some hooks from the group's past classic "She Flies on Strange Wings," and the twangy country-pop of "Suzy Lunacy (Mental Rock)" is a little too poppy to gel with the rest of the album. However, even these tunes benefit from tight arrangements and a spirited, totally committed performance from the group. The result is an album that retains its power today. In the end, Moontan is a necessity for Golden Earring fans, and a worthwhile listen for anyone interested in 1970s rock at its most adventurous...Dhar Jelling

Eagles - One Of These Nights (1975) (Digipak Remaster 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese remastered reissue packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve.

The Eagles recorded their albums relatively quickly in their first years of existence, their LPs succeeding each other by less than a year. One of These Nights, their fourth album, was released in June 1975, more than 14 months after its predecessor. Anticipation had been heightened by the belated chart-topping success of the third album's "The Best of My Love"; taking a little more time, the band generated more original material, and that material was more polished. More than ever, the Eagles seemed to be a vehicle for Don Henley (six co-writing credits) and Glenn Frey (five), but at the same time, Randy Meisner was more audible than ever, his two lead vocals including one of the album's three hit singles, "Take It to the Limit," and Bernie Leadon had two showcases, among them the cosmic-cowboy instrumental "Journey of the Sorcerer" (later used as the theme music for the British television series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Nevertheless, it was the team of Henley and Frey that stood out, starting with the title track, a number one single, which had more of an R&B -- even a disco -- sound than anything the band had attempted previously, and continuing through the ersatz Western swing of "Hollywood Waltz" to "Lyin' Eyes," one of Frey's patented folk-rock shuffles, which became another major hit. One of These Nights was the culmination of the blend of rock, country, and folk styles the Eagles had been making since their start; there wasn't much that was new, just the same sorts of things done better than they had been before. In particular, a lyrical stance -- knowing and disillusioned, but desperately hopeful -- had evolved, and the musical arrangements were tighter and more purposeful. The result was the Eagles' best-realized and most popular album so far...W. Ruhlmann

Small Faces - Odgen's Nut Gone Flake(1968) (3CD Remaster Deluxe Edit 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

There was no shortage of good psychedelic albums emerging from England in 1967-1968, but Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake is special even within their ranks. The Small Faces had already shown a surprising adaptability to psychedelia with the single “Itchycoo Park” and much of their other 1967 output, but Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake pretty much ripped the envelope. British bands had an unusual approach to psychedelia from the get-go, often preferring to assume different musical “personae” on their albums, either feigning actual “roles” in the context of a variety show (as on the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album), or simply as storytellers in the manner of the Pretty Things on S.F. Sorrow, or actor/performers as on the Who’s Tommy. The Small Faces tried a little bit of all of these approaches on Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake, but they never softened their sound. Side one’s material, in particular, would not have been out of place on any other Small Faces release. “Afterglow (Of Your Love)” and “Rene” both have a pounding beat from Kenny Jones, and Ian McLagan’s surging organ drives the former while his economical piano accompaniment embellishes the latter; and Steve Marriott’s crunching guitar highlights “Song of a Baker.” Marriott singing has him assuming two distinct “roles,” neither unfamiliar—the Cockney upstart on “Rene” and “Lazy Sunday,” and the diminutive soul shouter on “Afterglow (Of Your Love)” and “Song of a Baker.” Some of side two’s production is more elaborate, with overdubbed harps and light orchestration here and there, and an array of more ambitious songs, all linked by a narration by comic dialect expert Stanley Unwin, about a character called “Happiness Stan.” The core of the sound, however, is found in the pounding “Rollin’ Over,” which became a highlight of the group’s stage act during its final days—the song seems lean and mean with a mix in which Ronnie Lane’s bass is louder than the overdubbed horns. Even “Mad John,” which derives from folk influences, has a refreshingly muscular sound on its acoustic instruments. Overall, this was the ballsiest-sounding piece of full-length psychedelia to come out of England, and it rode the number one spot on the U.K. charts for six weeks in 1968, though not without some controversy surrounding advertisements by Immediate Records that parodied the Lord’s Prayer. Still, Ogden’s was the group’s crowning achievement—it had even been Marriott’s hope to do a stage presentation of Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake, though a television special might’ve been more in order. As with most Immediate Records releases, it has gone through multiple reissue cycles on vinyl and CD; the original LP came in a circular sleeve in keeping with the design of the cover, and was reissued in a more convention jacket during the 1970s and early ‘80s. Most of the CD versions until the 1990s were, in keeping with the poor state of the Immediate Records tape library, substandard in sound, but since 1994 or so there has been a succession of good-sounding digital remasterings.

Nazareth - Hair Of The Dog (1974) (Digipak Remaster)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1975 classic from the Scottish rockers. For album number six, Nazareth singer Dan McCafferty, bass player Pete Agnew, guitarist Manny Charlton and drummer Darrell Sweet wrote heavier material than ever before, both in response to the prevailing spirit on the scene at the time and because that was their natural frame of mind. This reissue expands upon one of the very finest, most influential Rock records of the era, highlighting just how hot Nazareth were around the time of its conception and release. Features nine bonus cuts including 'Love Hurts', the two 1975 UK hits, 'My White Bicycle' and 'Holy Roller', and five crunching numbers from a concert at London's Paris Theatre in the same month that Hair Of The Dog hit the streets. Salvo. 2010.

Roxy Music - Avalon (1982) (21. Anniversary SACD Remaster 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

By 1982, it must have been clear to Brian Ferry, Phil Manzanera, and Andy McKay -- the remaining charter members of Roxy Music -- that their time was up, for there are clues throughout this recording that they would soon disband and move on to solo projects. Avalon concludes a second run for Roxy that was as commercially successful as their first run (1972 to 1976) was artistically fruitful. With Manifesto, in 1979, Roxy had scored legions of fans without sacrificing any of their trademark innovation. Avalon, which features the hit "More Than This" (remade into a hit again in 1997 by a post-Natalie Merchant 10,000 Maniacs), was a profoundly influential work. Its light, shimmering tone was imitated frequently throughout the '80s, most notably by Human League and Duran Duran, but the lyrical quality has rarely been matched. Ferry sings from an after-hours perspective where the focus is no longer the moment at hand, but tomorrow -- a fitting conclusion for a forward-looking band...Martin Johnson

Hipper students of 1980s pop might pretend that Joy Division and the Smiths had a monopoly on melancholia, but for the older, more suave brooders, nothing could match the stylized desolation of Roxy Music's last album. Avalon was recorded in the wake of the band's hit version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Although that song isn't on Avalon, its tortured shadow looms large over "While My Heart Is Still Beating," the title track, and the unlikely Balearic anthem "More Than This." If time has been kind to Bryan Ferry's crumpled Armani chic, it hasn't exactly been vicious to his back catalog: Avalon sounds even more sumptuous now that the CD age has caught up with Rhett Davis's pristine production...Peter Paphides

Album is dedicated to the memory of Steve Douglas (sax player member of the Wrecking Crew worked with Phil Spector, Ramones, Dylan, Ry Cooder, Mickey Hart & Mink DeVille).

"Willy DeVille Live" is a live recording of Willy DeVille and the Mink DeVille Band. The recordings were made in June 16-17, 1993 at the Bottom Line in Greenwich Village, New York, and in October, 1993 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. Willy DeVille Live was not released in the United States. According to Eagle Rock Entertainment, "The soul-chorus/brass mixture with its impressive orchestration assured the album the number one sales chart position in Spain." The album was dedicated to Steve Douglas, who played saxophone on the first three Mink DeVille albums and produced Le Chat Bleu. Douglas died shortly before the album came out.

I've been a DeVille fan since he first broke in the late 70s and have seen him countless times in NYC -- including the date that this album is recorded at. At first, I wasn't really taken with the idea of a live album of his, because its release seemed like a throw-away, "let's just get this out there" kind of effort. I knew it was out for a long time, but the preceeding review prompted me to order it and check it out. Simply put, I was totally blown away by this thing. Only in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that a live recording would capture Willy's gut-wrenching vocals and both the subtle nuance and raw power of the band. I saw these shows and they were incredible experiences. The CD captures it all -- perfectly. Great performances, very good sound quality. It ranks up there with his very best studio albums and is, quite possibly, his finest release ever. This thing kicks like you couldn't imagine and even if you're not a big fan of Willy's, check it out if you like ballsy deliveries and a Grade-A band. Simply fabulous...J. Acustom

Yes - Relayer (1974) (HDCD Remaster 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Part of the 'Yes Original Jacket Series'. Japanese limited edition HDCD remastered reissue of 1974 album, packaged ina miniature LP sleeve.

Yes had fallen out of critical favor with Tales from Topographic Oceans, a two-record set of four songs that reviewers found indulgent. But they had not fallen out of the Top Ten, and so they had little incentive to curb their musical ambitiousness. Relayer, released 11 months after Tales, was a single-disc, three-song album, its music organized into suites that alternated abrasive, rhythmically dense instrumental sections featuring solos for the various instruments with delicate vocal and choral sections featuring poetic lyrics devoted to spiritual imagery. Such compositions seemed intended to provide an interesting musical landscape over which the listener might travel, and enough Yes fans did that to make Relayer a Top Ten, gold-selling hit, though critics continued to complain about the lack of concise, coherent song structures...W. Rushed out less than nine months after the surprise success of Dire Straits' self-titled debut album, the group's sophomore effort, Communiqué, continues in the same vein. Mark Knopfler and co. had established a sound (derived largely from J.J. Cale) of laid-back shuffles and intricate, bluesy guitar playing, and Communiqué provides more examples of it. "Lady Writer" (a lesser singles chart entry on both sides of the Atlantic) nearly duplicated the sound of "Sultans of Swing," even if . Communiqué sold immediately to Dire Straits' established audience, but no more, and it did not fare as well critically as its predecessor or its follow-up...W. Ruhlmann

Eagles - On The Border (1974) (Digipak Remaster 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese remastered reissue packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve.

The Eagles began recording their third album in England with producer Glyn Johns, as they had their first two albums, but abandoned the sessions after completing two acceptable tracks. Johns, it is said, tended to emphasize the group's country elements and its harmonies, while the band, in particular Glenn Frey and Don Henley, wanted to take more of a hard rock direction. They reconvened with a new producer, Bill Szymczyk, who had produced artists like B.B. King and, more significantly, Joe Walsh. But the resulting album is not an outright rock effort by any means. Certainly, Frey and Henley got what they wanted with "Already Gone," the lead-off track, which introduces new bandmember Don Felder as one part of the twin guitar solo that recalls the Allman Brothers Band; "James Dean," a rock & roll song on the order of "Your Mama Don't Dance," and "Good Day in Hell," which is strongly reminiscent of Joe Walsh songs like "Rocky Mountain Way." But the album also features the usual mixture of styles typical of an Eagles album. For example, "Midnight Flyer," sung by Randy Meisner, is modern bluegrass; "My Man" is Bernie Leadon's country-rock tribute to the recently deceased Gram Parsons; and "Ol' 55" is one of the group's well-done covers of a tune by a singer/songwriter labelmate, in this case Tom Waits. The title track, meanwhile, points the band in a new R&B direction that was later pursued more fully. Like most successful groups, the Eagles combined many different elements, and their third album, which looked back to their earlier work and anticipated their later work, was a transitional effort that combined even more styles than most of their records did...W. Dire Straits - Dire Straits (1978) (SHM-CD 2008)

Dire Straits' minimalist interpretation of pub rock had already crystallized by the time they released their eponymous debut. Driven by Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and his husky warbling, the album is a set of bluesy rockers. And while the bar band mentality of pub-rock is at the core of Dire Straits -- even the group's breakthrough single, "Sultans of Swing," offered a lament for a neglected pub rock band -- their music is already beyond the simple boogies and shuffles of their forefathers, occasionally dipping into jazz and country. Knopfler also shows an inclination toward Dylanesque imagery, which enhances the smoky, low-key atmosphere of the album. While a few of the songs fall flat, the album is remarkably accomplished for a debut, and Dire Straits had difficulty surpassing it throughout their career...S. Erlewine

Bob Dylan & The Band - Before The Flood (1974) (Remaster Edit 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Dylan has issued a large number of live albums in his day, but 1974's Before the Flood deserves special mention because of the presence of the Band behind him. Dylan had recently brought the Band into the studio to record the chart-topping (yet still somehow underappreciated) Planet Waves, which was the first (and, as it turned out, only) studio record he made after leaving Columbia for Asylum. He then asked them along on the subsequent tour, which at the time became the most successful rock tour in history. The fruits of that partnership are contained on this two-CD set, which actually ignores Planet Waves completely in favor of older classics. Although the album includes several strong collaborations, the highlights ironically come during Dylan's solo-acoustic portion, which yields powerful and gritty versions of "Don't Think Twice" and "It's Alright Ma," and during the Band's own exhilarating numbers with Dylan sitting out...M. Greilsamer

Bob Dylan and the Band both needed the celebrated reunion tour of 1974, since Dylan's fortunes had been floundering since Self Portrait and the Band stumbled with 1971's Cahoots. The tour, with its attendant publicity, definitely returned both artists to center stage, and it definitely succeeded, breaking box office records and earning great reviews. Before the Flood, a double-album souvenir of the tour, suggests that these were generally dynamic shows, but not because they were reveling in the past, but because Dylan was fighting the nostalgia of his audience -- nostalgia, it must be noted, that was promoted as the very reason behind these shows. Yet that's what gives this music such kick -- Dylan reworks, rearranges, reinterprets these songs in ways that are still disarming, years after its initial release. He could only have performed interpretations this radical with a group as sympathetic, knowing of his traits as the band, whose own recordings here are respites from the storm. And this is a storm -- the sound of a great rocker, surprising his band and audience by tearing through his greatest songs in a manner that might not be comforting, but it guarantees it to be one of the best live albums of its time. Ever, maybe...S. Thomas

Bob Dylan - New Morning (1970) (Remaster Edit 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Dylan rushed out New Morning in the wake of the commercial and critical disaster Self Portrait, and the difference between the two albums suggests that its legendary failed predecessor was intentionally flawed. New Morning expands on the laid-back country-rock of John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline by adding a more pronounced rock & roll edge. While there are only a couple of genuine classics on the record ("If Not for You," "One More Weekend"), the overall quality is quite high, and many of the songs explore idiosyncratic routes Dylan had previously left untouched, whether it's the jazzy experiments of "Sign on the Window" and "Winterlude," the rambling spoken word piece "If Dogs Run Free" or the Elvis parable "Went to See the Gypsy." Such offbeat songs make New Morning a charming, endearing record...S.T. Erlewine

Roxy Music - Siren (1975) (Remaster Edit 1999)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Released before Roxy Music became a de facto Bryan Ferry project, but after their Brian Eno-influenced art-rock stage, Siren is a snapshot of a band in flux, and loving it. There's little of the boundary-pushing primitivism that marked their self-titled debut. Still, Ferry's youthful edge and the band's rough-hewn melodicism will shock those expecting to hear the adult-contemporary silkiness found on 1982's massive-selling Avalon. Both camps should nevertheless admire this record for so recklessly and beautifully straddling that massive stylistic gap. Featuring their first modest hit in the U.S., "Love Is the Drug," the record overflows with choruses that reveal their hooks slowly while drawing on sunny, spare instrumentation and Ferry's loopy, still-developing croon. As the band wrestles between glam-pop, sleek dance tunes, and shiny, Moody Blues-esque rock & roll, they don't sound at all like a band running from its past. Ferry and his cohorts are just taking back the reins, revealing the brisk melodies and strong songwriting that were the one constant in Roxy Music's lifespan...Matthew Cooke

The self titled debut Roxy Music(72) and its follow-up For Your Pleasure(73) gave the band a reputation as being a kind of English Velvet Underground. By discs three and four, Stranded(73) and Country Life(74), the bands sound was more under control, but still their sound from record to record changed so much that it was hard to know exactly where or how to categorize them. Siren(75) is their fifth record and apparently was one the band was never completely happy with. However like everything else Roxy Music did between 72-75 it has a certain unique appeal. Siren is a combination of rock and very melodic pop. Which might not sound like a very infectious or exciting listening experience but it is because its done so well. Some of the early Roxy records are brilliant but kind of patchy and some of the later ones feather light disco. Siren is a solid listening experience all the way through. If you want kitschy art collages get those first two records. If you want Roxy Music the thinking mans refined rock show get Stranded or Country Life or the live Viva. But if you want a solid batch of classic and listenable pop melodies that will not insult your intelligence but will please your ears over and over again, Siren like its name is irresistable. Everything in my opinion the band did up to 75 is worth your time. After 75 Avalon is the only one you need...D. Anderson

Roxy Music - Country Life (1974) (Remaster Edit 1999)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Some contend Roxy Music peaked on their first two LPs, the ones with Brian Eno. Others contend they were best on their next two LPs, without Eno. Country Life is the second LP of the latter grouping, and it probably is the highpoint of the band's career (although its predecessor, Street Life, is stiff competition). The haunting, melancholic "The Thrill of It All," the art-rockin' "Out of the Blue," the almost-pure '50s rock of "If It Takes All Night," and the decadent Berlin-before-the-War affectations of "A Really Good Time" all lead to the concluding "Prairie Rose," Bryan Ferry's campy ode tomore… Texas and amour Jerry Hall. This was "alternative" rock before the term existed. After this, Roxy Music became an entirely different band...Rainer Zuphall

Roxy Music - Stranded (1973) (Remaster Edit 1999)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Stranded shows a more melodic but still ambitious Roxy Music trying on musicial styles. While they don't all fit perfectly, the look is dazzling nonetheless. Stranded is the band's first true collaborative effort from start to finish. The first album was primarily written before the final line up was assembled. The second clearly had much input (although a dimished role for him) from Eno. Stranded features Ferry to the fore and clearly the front man while still very much a collaborative effort.
The surprising Mother of Pearl (the first Ferry song where he improvised the lyrics while listening to the playback for the very first time), wistful A Song for Europe and reverent Psalm all capture Roxy's topsy turvy world in transition. While Stranded isn't as odd as For YOur Pleasure or rock as hard as COuntry Life, the melodic sheen of these well crafted songs stand out in comparison to those efforts.
Eno's favorite Roxy album is Stranded...Wayne Klein

Yes - Close to the Edge (1972) (HDCD Remaster 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Part of the 'Yes Original Jacket Series'. Japanese limited edition HDCD remastered reissue of 1972 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. The CD will play on a normal CD player but in order to utilise the HDCD format you have to burn this to a CD without any modification. The CD can then be played using WMP. Note that WMP has to be configured to play 24bit audio by going to Tools|Options|Devices|Speakers|Properties and ticking the 24bit audio box. Also your soundcard must be 24bit capable. Alternatively you can play it on a standalone HDCD player (obviously) and on a DVD player that supports HDCD.

With 1971's Fragile having left Yes poised quivering on the brink of what friend and foe acknowledged was the peak of the band's achievement, Close to the Edge was never going to be an easy album to make. Drummer Bill Bruford was already shifting restlessly against Jon Anderson's increasingly mystic/mystifying lyricism, while contemporary reports of the recording sessions depicted bandmate Rick Wakeman, too, as little more than an observer to the vast tapestry that Anderson, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire were creating. For it was vast. Close to the Edge comprised just three tracks, the epic "And You and I" and "Siberian Khatru," plus a side-long title track that represented the musical, lyrical, and sonic culmination of all that Yes had worked toward over the past five years. Close to the Edge would make the Top Five on both sides of the Atlantic, dispatch Yes on the longest tour of its career so far and, if hindsight be the guide, launch the band on a downward swing that only disintegration, rebuilding, and a savage change of direction would cure. The latter, however, was still to come. In 1972, Close to the Edge was a flawless masterpiece...D. Thompson

Eagles - Desperado (1973) (Digipak Remaster 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese remastered reissue packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve.

If Don Henley was the sole member of the Eagles underrepresented on their debut album, Eagles, with only two lead vocals and one co-songwriting credit, he made up for it on their follow-up, the "concept" album Desperado. The concept had to do with Old West outlaws, but it had no specific narrative. On Eagles, the group had already begun to marry itself to a Southwest sound and lyrical references, from the Indian-style introduction of "Witchy Woman" to the Winslow, AZ, address in "Take It Easy." All of this became more overt on Desperado, and it may be that Henley, who hailed from Northeast Texas, had the greatest affinity for the subject matter. In any case, he had co-writing credits on eight of the 11 selections and sang such key tracks as "Doolin-Dalton" and the title song. What would become recognizable as Henley's lyrical touch was apparent on those songs, which bore a serious, world-weary tone. Henley had begun co-writing with Glenn Frey, and they contributed the album's strongest material, which included the first single, "Tequila Sunrise," and "Desperado" (strangely never released as a single). But where Eagles seemed deliberately to balance the band's many musical styles and the talents of the band's members, Desperado, despite its overarching theme, often seemed a collection of disparate tracks -- "Out of Control" was a raucous rocker, while "Desperado" was a painfully slow ballad backed by strings -- with other bandmembers' contributions tacked on rather than integrated. Randy Meisner was down to two co-writing credits and one lead vocal ("Certain Kind of Fool"), while Bernie Leadon's two songs, "Twenty-One" and "Bitter Creek," seemed to come from a different record entirely. The result was an album that was simultaneously more ambitious and serious-minded than its predecessor and also slighter and less consistent...W. Ruhlmann

Yes - Yessongs (1973) (HDCD Remaster 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Part of the 'Yes Original Jacket Series'. Japanese limited edition HDCD remastered reissue of 1973 album, packaged in a gatefold LP sleeve. 2001

Opening with a few bars of Stravinsky to set the adoring crowd on its feet, this once-three-LP set is Yes at their finest. This was, after all, probably the most mainstream act that had even provisional "prog rock" status, and their tunes show it. While "Heart of the Sunrise" may be one of the more modestly titled Yes songs (compare it with "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" or "The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)" or even "Total Mass Retain"), it also bears marks of the band playing at its most frenetic pace around Jon Anderson's soaring near-falsetto. Rick Wakeman's grand synthesizer flashes are more than textural, finding visual meshes aplenty with Roger Dean's cryptic cover art--most of which is shrunken or absent on this two-CD reissue. When Yessongs was cut, Marshall stacks were in their heyday, and Yes happily engaged in harmonic and melodic excessiveness as well as carefully planned layers of complexity. "Roundabout" was the band's biggest hit to this point. It appears here faithfully reproduced. As for the rest, it's entertaining in a 1970s way--full of light shows, staged visuals, and more. It took a few years for prog rock to dwindle and for punk-colored art rock to swerve toward songs about buildings and food. On Yessongs, the band was peaking, singing songs with far grander purpose (Siberia, the Apocalypse, etc.). By any account, this is one of the classic live albums of its generation, and as the soundtrack to the hip 1998 film Buffalo 66 hinted, at least one manic Yes song ("Heart of the Sunrise") passed muster for drama in the 1990s...A. Dire Straits - Making Movies (1980) (SHM-CD 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic 1980 album. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

Without second guitarist David Knopfler, Dire Straits began to move away from its roots rock origins into a jazzier variation of country-rock and singer/songwriter folk-rock. Naturally, this means that Mark Knopfler's ambitions as a songwriter are growing, as the storytelling pretensions of Making Movies indicate. Fortunately, his skills are increasing, as the lovely "Romeo and Juliet," "Tunnel of Love," and "Skateaway" indicate. And Making Movies is helped by a new wave-tinged pop production, which actually helps Knopfler's jazzy inclinations take hold. The record runs out of steam toward the end, closing with the borderline offensive "Les Boys," but the remainder of Making Movies ranks among the band's finest work. Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Eagles - The Long Run (1979) (Digipak Remaster 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese remastered reissue packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve.

Three years in the making (which was considered an eternity in the '70s), the Eagles' follow-up to the massively successful, critically acclaimed Hotel California was a major disappointment, even though it sold several million copies and threw off three hit singles. Those singles, in fact, provide some insight into the record. "Heartache Tonight" was an old-fashioned rock & roll song sung by Glenn Frey, while "I Can't Tell You Why" was a delicate ballad by Timothy B. Schmit, the band's newest member. Only "The Long Run," a conventional pop/rock tune with a Stax Records R&B flavor, bore the stamp and vocal signature of Don Henley, who had largely taken the reins of the band on Hotel California. Henley also dominated The Long Run, getting co-writing credits on nine of the ten songs, singing five lead vocals, and sharing another two with Frey. This time around, however, Henley's contributions were for the most part painfully slight. Only "The Long Run" and the regret-filled closing song, "The Sad Café," showed any of his usual craftsmanship. The album was dominated by second-rank songs like "The Disco Strangler," "King of Hollywood," and "Teenage Jail" that sounded like they couldn't have taken three hours much less three years to come up with. (Joe Walsh's "In the City" was up to his usual standard, but it may not even have been an Eagles recording, having appeared months earlier on the soundtrack to The Warriors, where it was credited as a Walsh solo track.) Amazingly, The Long Run reportedly was planned as a double album before being truncated to a single disc. If these were the keepers, what could the rejects have sounded like? ...W. Ruhlmann

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (1985) (SHM-CD 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese only SHM pressing. The SHM-CD [Super High Material CD] format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players. Universal. 2009

Brothers in Arms brought the atmospheric, jazz-rock inclinations of Love Over Gold into a pop setting, resulting in a surprise international best-seller. Of course, the success of Brothers in Arms was helped considerably by the clever computer-animated video for "Money for Nothing," a sardonic attack on MTV. But what kept the record selling was Mark Knopfler's increased sense of pop songcraft -- "Money for Nothing" had an indelible guitar riff, "Walk of Life" is a catchy up-tempo boogie variation on "Sultans of Swing," and the melodies of the bluesy "So Far Away" and the down-tempo, Everly Brothers-style "Why Worry" were wistful and lovely. Dire Straits had never been so concise or pop-oriented, and it wore well on them. Though they couldn't maintain that consistency through the rest of the album -- only the jazzy "Your Latest Trick" and the flinty "Ride Across the River" make an impact -- Brothers in Arms remains one of their most focused and accomplished albums, and in its succinct pop sense, it's distinctive within their catalog. [In 2005 Mercury released a 20th anniversary limited edition version of Brothers in Arms in the Hybrid/SACD format....S. Erlewine

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping (1974) (Gold Disc 2009)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Audio Fidelity's 24K+ series brings you classic music in deluxe packaging with see through slip cases (ala DCC), using original graphics, all beautifully reproduced. Audio Fidelity only uses the original two track master tape which is played back on a specifically constructed vintage tube playback deck. Here's where the plus (+) comes in: The analog masters are put through AF's new proprietary A/D converter which adds true "breath of life" to the music, making the new 24K+ Gold CD series the best sounding music you can buy, period!

Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote the book on Southern rock with their first album, so it only made sense that they followed it for their second album, aptly titled Second Helping. Sticking with producer Al Kooper (who, after all, discovered them), the group turned out a record that replicated all the strengths of the original, but was a little tighter and a little more professional. It also revealed that the band, under the direction of songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, was developing a truly original voice. Of course, the band had already developed their own musical voice, but it was enhanced considerably by Van Zant's writing, which was at turns plainly poetic, surprisingly clever, and always revealing. Though Second Helping isn't as hard a rock record as Pronounced, it's the songs that make the record. "Sweet Home Alabama" became ubiquitous, yet it's rivaled by such terrific songs as the snide, punkish "Workin' for MCA," the Southern groove of "Don't Ask Me No Questions," the affecting "The Ballad of Curtis Loew," and "The Needle and the Spoon," a drug tale as affecting as their rival Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done," but much harder rocking. This is the part of Skynyrd that most people forget -- they were a great band, but they were indelible because that was married to great writing. And nowhere was that more evident than on Second Helping...S. Th. Erlewine
