Eric Clapton - Eric Clapton (1970) (2CD Digipak Deluxe Remaster 2006)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Eric Clapton's eponymous solo debut was recorded after he completed a tour with Delaney & Bonnie. Clapton used the core of the duo's backing band and co-wrote the majority of the songs with Delaney Bramlett -- accordingly, Eric Clapton sounds more laid-back and straightforward than any of the guitarist's previous recordings. There are still elements of blues and rock & roll, but they're hidden beneath layers of gospel, R&B, country, and pop flourishes. And the pop element of the record is the strongest of the album's many elements -- "Blues Power" isn't a blues song and only "Let It Rain," the album's closer, features extended solos. Throughout the album, Clapton turns out concise solos that de-emphasize his status as guitar god, even when they display astonishing musicality and technique. That is both a good and a bad thing -- it's encouraging to hear him grow and become a more fully rounded musician, but too often the album needs the spark that some long guitar solos would have given it. In short, it needs a little more of Clapton's personality. [In 2006, Universal released a Deluxe Edition of Eric Clapton, which contained Delaney Bramlett's previously unreleased original mix of the album on a second disc; containing one less song, it's looser than the Tom Dowd mix, but not quite as commercial, and not necessarily better -- but the subtle differences are worth hearing for die-hard fans. There are also previously unreleased versions of "Don't Know Why" and "I've Told You for the Last Time" here, an early version of "Let It Rain" called "She Rides," a King Curtis tune called "Teasin'" that features Clapton and Delaney Bramlett in support, plus two songs from Delaney & Bonnie that feature Clapton on guitar: "Comin' Home" and "Groupie (Superstar)."]...S. T.Rex - Electric Warrior (1971) (18-track Remaster Edit 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This expanded, remastered 2003 edition adds seven bonus tracks, including a previously unreleased acoustic version of "Planet Queen." Other rarities include the single version of "Hot Love" and a rare recorded interview excerpt from 1971. The expanded booklet features unseen archival photos, restored LP artwork, and extensive liner notes.

The secret behind the glam pop of gorgeous, oh-so-groovy T. Rex mastermind Marc Bolan was this: Always make it seem heavy. On his excellent Electric Warrior -- a title that projects heavy-osity despite its music's carefully catchy touch -- Bolan's endless aura of cool turns lyrical inanities into psychedelic poetry. Released in 1971 (six years before Bolan's death in a car accident), T. Rex's sixth album is packed with ripping guitar riffs and even better rock 'n' roll imagery -- "You're built like a car/You've got a hubcap diamond star halo," Bolan sings on the hit "Bang a Gong," an anthem of abandon that sounds cool and controlled. T. Rex's lyrics didn't always make sense, as in "Under the alligator rain/My heart's all pain" from the thumping "Mambo Sun." But judging by the positive vibes of the album's closer, "Life's a Gas" ("But it really doesn't matter at all/Life's a gas/Hope it's gonna last"), it's doubtful this hipster would have gotten hung up on a critique of his lyrics. He was right anyway. When it comes to pop, the words really don't matter at all, either -- as long as it sounds good. And Electric Warrior sounds very good indeed...S. Kaufman

Television - Adventure (1978) (12-track Remaster 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Adventure is the second album by New York punk pioneers Television. The follow up to their critically acclaimed debut, Marquee Moon, upon its release it fared worse than its predecessor in the United States but entered the charts at #7 in the Britain. A noticeable difference between Adventure and Marquee Moon is in the production. Where Marquee Moon is a raw and straightforward album, Adventure has softer and more layered sound with added nuances, such as keyboard textures and back-up vocals. Two of the songs, "Foxhole" and "Careful" were older songs from the band's live set. The complex guitar work of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd that gave Marquee Moon its appeal is still apparent on Adventure.

Def Leppard - Pyromania (1983) (SHM-CD Remaster 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) pressing of this classic 1983 album from the Rock legends. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008

Def Leppard's rock sensibilities shot them right to the top of the charts in the '80s. On their third album, Pyromania, the band reconciled new wave melodicism with heavy metal and catchy hooks without compromising any of its edge. The album has sold over 10 million copies, due in part to heavy rotation on MTV. But even without their ubiquitous television presence, anthems like "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'" still had the stuff that drove the kids crazy. Bursts of screaming guitars and simple power riffs joined forces with choruses that begged to be shouted along to. Guitarists Phil Collen and Steve Clarke may have provided all the pyrotechnics on Pyromania, but the focal point of Def Leppard's sound, particularly for their teenage female fans, was singer Joe Elliott's voice (and, of course, his hair). The record--an essential brick in the foundation of '80s metal--also contains the hit "Photograph." ...S. Gdula

Amon Duul II - Wolf City (1972) (10-track Digipak Remaster 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The fifth Amon Düül II studio album, Wolf City, saw the light of day in September of 1972. While its predecessor, Carnival In Babylon, had, according to Karrer, still been produced "with revolvers drawn", the recordings of Wolf City went off comparably peacefully. The same applied to the musical direction of the album, which sounded more song-oriented, not as multi-layered and more geared to Renate Knaup's unusual vocal style. Even the sweeping improvisations of earlier days were a thing of the past, with only the seven-minute opener Surrounded By The Stars coming close to the playing time of their previous cuts. Atmospheric numbers such as Wie Der Wind Am Ende Einer StraĆżÅøe or the brief, avant-garde Deutsch Nepal were definite highlights of Amon Düül II's creative oeuvre. Amon Düül II, the second formation of this now legendary band, are one of the earliest and best known of the German experimental (Krautrock) bands. For the complete re-issue series of the Amon Düül II catalogue, the CDs will be released as remastered deluxe editions, with enhanced booklets, featuring new liner notes and photos...B. Ballerman

Wolf City is the fifth studio album released by the German Krautrock band Amon Düül II. Like its predecessor, Carnival in Babylon, Wolf City is a more conventional recording than the band's earlier albums, with shorter track times and more straightforward song structures. This was likely due to the band's increasing commercial popularity, both at home and in the UK. Despite this change, the album reaffirms Amon Düül II's love for experimentation, especially on such tracks as "Jail-House Frog" and "Deutsch Nepal"...D. Jellinc

ELO - Out Of The Blue (1977) (20-track Deluxe Remaster 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007

The last ELO album to make a major impact on popular music, Out of the Blue was of a piece with its lavishly produced predecessor, A New World Record, but it's a much more mixed bag as an album. For starters, it was a double LP, a format that has proved daunting to all but a handful of rock artists, and was no less so here. The songs were flowing fast and freely from Jeff Lynne at the time, however, and well more than half of what is here is very solid, at least as songs if not necessarily as recordings. "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Turn to Stone" are among the best songs in the group's output, and much of the rest is very entertaining. The heavy sound of the orchestra, however, as well as the layer upon layer of vocal overdubs, often seem out of place. All in all, the group was trying too hard to generate a substantial-sounding double LP, complete with a suite, "Concerto for a Rainy Day." The latter is the nadir of the album, an effort at conceptual rock that seemed archaic even in 1977. Another chunk is filled up with what might best be called art rock mood music ("The Whale"), before you finally get to the relief of a basic rocker like "Birmingham Blues." Even here, the group couldn't leave well enough alone -- rather than ending it on that note, they had to finish the album with "Wild West Hero," a piece of ersatz movie music that adds nothing to what you've heard over the previous 65 minutes. In its defense, Out of the Blue was massively popular and did become the centerpiece of a huge worldwide tour that earned the group status as a major live attraction for a time. [Out of the Blue was reissued in 2007 as a 30th Anniversary Edition with new photos, liner notes, and three bonus tracks, including "The Quick and the Daft," "Latitude 88 North," and a home demo of "Wild West Hero."] Bruce Eder

Jeff Lynne wrote the entire album in three and a half weeks after a sudden burst of creativity whilst hidden away in his rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. It took a further two months to record in Munich. The album had 4,000,000 pre-ordered copies and quickly went multi-Platinum upon release. Out of the Blue spawned five hit singles in different countries, and was ELO's most commercially successful studio album. It was also the first double album in the history of the UK music charts to generate four top twenty hit singles. Side three of the original double LP consisted of the symphonic Concerto for a Rainy Day, composed of four separate tracks which together made up a cohesive suite. The inclement weather effects heard on "Concerto" were real and recorded by Jeff Lynne during a very rainy summer in Munich 1977. The Concerto suite would be Lynne's last dabbling in symphonic rock. ”

Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits (1971) 30th Anniversary Edition (2002)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

First class Mac at their best before they became a factory pop band.
This is the original band, back in the days when they had 3 lead guitarists and were led by Peter Green. If you absolutely have to buy ONLY one cd featuring the Peter Green version of the Mac, let this be it. It has the sweetly soaring instrumental hit "Albatross", the song that inspired Monty Python's running gag. It has the single version of Green's FM swan song "Green Manalishi". It has both parts of "Oh Well", Green's unusal and beautiful opus. This collection is a truly comprehensive representation of Mac's more popular early blues and blues/rock. "Black Magic Woman", "Shake Your Moneymaker" and "Love That Burns" are both here. One unusual aspect of this cd is the inclusion of "Dragonfly", Danny Kirwan's gorgeous song that was Mac's first single release post-Peter Green. It did not chart well, but it has some incredibly exquisite guitar, like Kirwan's later work on Bare Trees and Kiln House. Dragonfly is rarely included on Mac's compilation albums...D. Jellinc

This was the first greatest hits package for the rock band Fleetwood Mac, covering the period from the band's beginning in 1968 through 1971, in its original incarnation led by guitarist Peter Green. Part of the second British blues boom of the late 1960s, Fleetwood Mac enjoyed several hit singles in the United Kingdom, collated here for this album issued on CBS Records only in the U.K., but available in the United States as an import. The single "Black Magic Woman" received exposure in the U.S. via a cover by the San Francisco group Santana, who placed their version in the Billboard Top 40. Long out of print, it has been replaced on compact disc by the 2002 compilation The Best Of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac on the Sony International label, which now owns the Columbia/CBS catalogue. A very similar release with the same title and same cover was released by Sony BMG in 1989, but consisted of the tracks from The Pious Bird of Good Omen plus "Shake Your Moneymaker" and "Love That Burns"...A. Santana – Supernatural (1999) (2CD Remaster Legacy Edit)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Legacy Edition of Supernatural expands Santana's blockbuster 1999 album with a full disc of bonus material, mostly unreleased cuts from the recording sessions. Many of these feature the Santana band alone, departing from the superstar-collaboration blueprint of the album and, in turn, suggesting what the record could have been without the guidance of Clive Davis -- namely, a perfectly fine latter-day Santana album with the group doing what they†ve always done, only without the pop songs and flair that brought them a wider audience. That pop bent is heard elsewhere on these tracks, including the unreleased Dave Matthews & Carter Beauford collaboration "†Rain Down on Me,†" but more evident on dance remixes of "†Corazon Espinado†" and "†Maria Maria.†" There's also bait for guitar geeks, too, in the form of unreleased solos from Santana and Clapton on "†The Calling.†" All of this is fairly solid stuff, particularly for those looking for more of Carlos† peerless playing, but all of it only illustrates how well Supernatural was crafted in the first place, as none of it should have taken the place of what wound up on the album...S. Th. Erlewine

One of the defining and most critically acclaimed albums of the '90s, Supernatural was the record which brought Santana to the spotlight of a new generation of fans. Joined by Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews, Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Eric Clapton, Wyclef Jean and others, Supernatural set the standard for contemporary pop and rock records moving into the new millennium.
Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the multi-platinum album, the Legacy Edition includes the phenomenally successful original album completely re-mastered under Carlos Santana's supervision, a bonus disc jam packed with almost 70 minutes of rare and unreelased material, and a full color book with new liner notes, rare photos, memorabilia and more!..D. Cactus - Fully Unleashed: The Live Gigs (70-72) (Digipak Remaster 2004)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

With the exception of a few numbers on assorted multi-artist collections and the trio of tunes included on 'Ot 'N' Sweaty (1972), American blues-rockers Cactus were poorly represented as a performing act until this release. Fully Unleashed: The Live Gigs (2004) is the companion volume to the similarly thorough Barely Contained: The Studio Sessions (2004). Each double-disc package is filled with not only the combo's respective four long-players, but also plenty of remarkable and previously vaulted sides. That is an understatement when considering the two-plus hours of vintage concert material from three distinct incarnations of Cactus, centering on the first lineup's final show on December 19, 1971 at Ellis Auditorium in Memphis, TN. Jim McCarty's wailing lead electric guitar introduction to "Long Tall Sally" is a precursor to the hard-and-heavy onslaught that alternately pulverizes and soars on other classic covers, such as their (dare say) definitive workout of Mose Allison's "Parchment Farm" or the 17-plus-minute oldies medley containing "Heeby Jeebies" and "Money," plus the Memphis-apropos "Hound Dog" and "What'd I Say." The original roster is additionally featured on "No Need to Worry" and another incendiary reading of "Parchment Farm" from the 1970 Isle of Wight performance. Although both were initially available on the First Great Rock Festivals of the Seventies (1971) anthology, neither has been on CD before. A short-lived lineup with Ron Leejack (guitar) was captured on the title track to One Way...Or Another and "Bro. Bill" from June 27, 1971 at Gillian's in Buffalo, New York, and the remaining cuts are from the group's April 1972 appearance at the Mar y Sol Pop Festival in Puerto Rico with Werner Fritzsching (guitar) and former Atomic Rooster member Peter French (vocals). While "Swim," "Bad Mother Boogie" and "Out L'il Rock-N-Roll Thing" were incorporated into 'Ot 'N' Sweaty, "Bedroom Mazurka" can be found on the out-of-print Mar y Sol (1972) compilation...L. Planer

Comes packaged in a double slimline jewel case within a full color slipcase cover. 1998 Repertoire Records release.

Alternately psychedelic, progressive, and hard rock-styled, the eclectic German band Grobschnitt became one of the most popular live acts in German history. The group recorded several lauded albums in the 1970s, moving between styles before switching to more mainstream pop and rock in the 1980s. Meanwhile, in part thanks to drummer Joachim Ehrig, the group added touches of absurdist humor to their records and live shows.

Grobschnitt were formed in 1970 by several members of a band called Crew, including Stefan Daneliak (vocals, guitar), Eroc, and Gerd Otto Kuhn (guitars, vocals). This nucleus later added Axel Harlos (drums), Bernard Uhlemann (bass), and Hermann Quetting (keyboards). The band's first record, Grobschnitt (1972), found the band playing fairly straightforward progressive rock that was rather unsuccessful with critics and record buyers. After the release, both Harlos and Quetting left the group. Deciding to carry on, the band adapted a new state persona, filled with bizarre costumes and theatrical performances that even featured their roadies. Meanwhile the group added Volker Kahr on keyboards. The band focused more on their space rock sound on their second album, Ballermann (1974), which originally consisted of two LP's, one filled with symphonic progressive rock, the other was given all to a space rock suite, "Solar Music." Their third album, Jumbo (1975), was released in both English and German versions and found Grobschnitt moving closer to symphonic progressive rock in the manner of Yes and Genesis with a series of epic tracks. That sound was the focus of Rockpommel's Land (1977), which even featured a cover that was reminiscent of Roger Dean. A concept album, the record told the story of a boy's adventures in a strange land. Solar Music Live (1978) was a live recreation of the "Solar Music" suite off their second album. The band moved towards a harder rocking psychedelic feel with Merry Go Round in 1979 and Illegal (1981). By Razzia (1982), the group had abandoned many of their more progressive tendencies as drummer Eroc had left the group. Their later 1980s records were far more conventional keyboard-dominated pop records...G Orens

Man - Be Good To Yourself... (1972) (6-track Digipak Remaster 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

2007 digitally remastered edition of the Welsh band's classic album, originally released in 1972. Features deluxe artwork with expanded booklet and includes 'Man's Family Jungle' and a poster that depicts 'Man's Map Of Wales'. Six tracks including 'C'Mon and 'Bananas'. Esoteric.

Made in 1972 this album is rated, by many fans, as Man's finest. While the second song, "Keep on Crinting" is not so well remembered, the others, "C'mon", "Bananas" and "Life on the Road" are firm favourites with fans and even today, almost thirty years on, it is hard to imagine a live set without "C'mon and Bananas". The mood is mellow, laid back and irreverent. The music always seems to be on the way somewhere progressing rather than repeating.
Throughout the album, the guitar of Micky Jones works well with the keyboards of Phil Ryan as they trade lead melodies. This was the latter's first album with the band and it is remarkable how well the whole group fits together.
"C'mon" and "Keep on Crinting" almost seem to be a single piece and they start the tradition of the band to perform a variety of extended versions of the former track. "Bananas" and "Life on the Road" are more distinct as songs but they fit well into the mood of the album. The lyrics are generally upbeat and light hearted with no attempt by the band to take themselves particularly seriously.

If you are new to the band, this album really should be your first purchase. If you are an established fan that this is an essential part of your collection...P. o'Connor

Yes - Going For The One (1977) (HDCD Remaster 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Part of the 'Yes Original Jacket Series'. Japanese limited edition HDCD remastered reissue of 1977 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. The CD will play on a normal CD player but in order to utilise the HDCD format you have to burn this to a CD without any modification. The CD can then be played using WMP. Note that WMP has to be configured to play 24bit audio by going to Tools|Options|Devices|Speakers|Properties and ticking the 24bit audio box. Also your soundcard must be 24bit capable. Alternatively you can play it on a standalone HDCD player (obviously) and on a DVD player that supports HDCD.

Going for the One is perhaps the most overlooked item in the Yes catalog. It marked Rick Wakeman's return to the band after a three-year absence, and also a return to shorter song forms after the experimentalism of Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Relayer. In many ways, this disc could be seen as the follow-up to Fragile. Its five tracks still retain mystical, abstract lyrical images, and the music is grand and melodic, the vocal harmonies perfectly balanced by the stinging guitar work of Steve Howe, Wakeman's keyboards, and the solid rhythms of Alan White and Chris Squire. The title track features Howe on steel guitar (he's the only prog rocker who bothers with the instrument). "Turn of the Century" and the album's single, "Wonderous Stories," are lovely ballads the way only Yes can do them. "Parallels" is the album's big, pompous song, so well done that in later years the band opened concerts with it. Wakeman's stately church organ, recorded at St. Martin's Church, Vevey, Switzerland, sets the tone for this "Roundabout"-ish track. The concluding "Awaken" is the album's nod to the extended suite. Again, the lyrics are spacy in the extreme, but Jon Anderson and Squire are dead-on vocally, and the addition of Anderson's harp and White's tuned percussion round out this evocative track.

Little Feat - Dixie Chicken (1973) (24KT Gold Disc)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Following Roy Estrada's departure during the supporting tour for Sailin' Shoes, Lowell George became infatuated with New Orleans R&B and mellow jamming, all of which came to a head on their third album, 1973's Dixie Chicken. Although George is firmly in charge - he dominates the record, writing or co-writing seven of the 10 songs - this is the point where Little Feat found its signature sound as a band, and no album they would cut from this point on was too different from this seductive, laid-back, funky record. But no album would be quite as good, either, since Dixie Chicken still had much of the charming lyrical eccentricities of the first two albums, plus what is arguably George's best-ever set of songs. Partially due to the New Orleans infatuation, the album holds together better than Sailin' Shoes and George takes full advantage of the band's increased musical palette, writing songs that sound easy but are quite sophisticated, such as the rolling "Two Trains," the gorgeous, shimmering "Juliette," the deeply soulful and funny "Fat Man in the Bathtub" and the country-funk of the title track, which was covered nearly as frequently as "Willin'." In addition to "Walkin' All Night," a loose bluesy jam by Barrere and Bill Payne, the band also hauls out two covers which fit George's vibe perfectly: Allan Toussaint's slow burner "On Your Way Down" and "Fool Yourself," which was written by Fred Tackett, who later joined a reunited Feat in the '80s. It all adds up to a nearly irresistible record, filled with great songwriting, sultry grooves, and virtuosic performances that never are flashy. Little Feat, along with many jam bands that followed, tried to top this album, but they never managed to make a record this understated, appealing and fine...S. T. Erlewine”

After their brilliant self-titled debut and sophomore release Sailin' Shoes, leader Lowell George grabbed the reins as producer for the next group of sessions, resulting in 1973's Dixie Chicken. Usually considered their pinnaclee studio album, it's the understated elegance that keeps it all together. While maintaining the eccentricities that made Feat...well Feat, a subtle infu- sion of New Orleans r&b/soul undertones, seems the natural fit. The group's songwriting reaches new heights throughout, with a stop-over homage to the N.O. master Allan Toussaint, with a slow groove of his "On Your Way Down". Guests abound: two Bonnies, (Raitt and Bramlett, plus Three Dog Night's Danny Hutton lend supporting vocals. Always reliable Sneaky Pete's pedal steel and The Stones' Mick Taylor lends a few tasty licks, but it's the main-core Feat, now playing their tightest together that makes this definitely one of the greatest!...D. Yes - Fragile (1972) (HDCD Remaster 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese HDCD remastered reissue of their 1972 album. Packaged in a limited edition miniature reproduction of the original gatefold LP sleeve. The CD will play on a normal CD player but in order to utilise the HDCD format you have to burn this to a CD without any modification. The CD can then be played using WMP. The arrival of keyboardist Rick Wakeman for Yes's fourth recording, 1972's Fragile, signaled a major change for the founding fathers of UK progressive rock. Though Yes had begun expanding its scope with Fragile's predecessor The Yes Album, Wakeman's classically influenced approach helped the band attain new heights in composition and arrangement. The classical-rock sound Yes perfected on Fragile would define the group's style for the remainder of the '70s: Cuts like "Long Distance Runaround," "Heart of the Sunrise," and the FM staple "Roundabout" feature tricky time signatures, complex structures, and radical dynamic shifts, but Jon Anderson's straightforward vocal melodies and guitarist Steve Howe's signature licks make these songs instantly accessible. Each member of the band also indulges himself in a more "experimental" solo piece, and each is sophisticated in conception and elegant in construction. Ultimately, Fragile achieves the perfect marriage between Yes's lofty ambitions and their infectious melodic appeal...J. Allen

Yes - Close to the Edge (1972) (HDCD Remaster 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Part of the 'Yes Original Jacket Series'. Japanese limited edition HDCD remastered reissue of 1972 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. With 1971's Fragile having left Yes poised quivering on the brink of what friend and foe acknowledged was the peak of the band's achievement, Close to the Edge was never going to be an easy album to make. Drummer Bill Bruford was already shifting restlessly against Jon Anderson's increasingly mystic/mystifying lyricism, while contemporary reports of the recording sessions depicted bandmate Rick Wakeman, too, as little more than an observer to the vast tapestry that Anderson, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire were creating. For it was vast. Close to the Edge comprised just three tracks, the epic "And You and I" and "Siberian Khatru," plus a side-long title track that represented the musical, lyrical, and sonic culmination of all that Yes had worked toward over the past five years. Close to the Edge would make the Top Five on both sides of the Atlantic, dispatch Yes on the longest tour of its career so far and, if hindsight be the guide, launch the band on a downward swing that only disintegration, rebuilding, and a savage change of direction would cure. The latter, however, was still to come. In 1972, Close to the Edge was a flawless masterpiece...D. Thompson

Corinne Bailey Rae - The Sea

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

"The Sea" is the second studio album by English singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, released in Europe on February 01, 2010 by EMI / Virgin Music. It is the follow-up to her self-titled debut multi-platinum album and was recorded following her hiatus from the music scene, which she took in the wake of her husband Jason Rae's death.

British singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae (Corinne Jacqueline Bailey) was born on 26 February 1979 in Leeds to a Black-Kittitian father and a White-English mother as the eldest of four daughters, including Candice Bailey and actress Rhea Bailey. Corinne spent her childhood singing in church choirs, and later formed an all-girl indie-rock band called "Helen". Though they managed to sign to "Roadrunner Records" they failed to record an album, and disbanded when the bassist became pregnant. Rae decided to go to University and, while studying for an English Literature degree, she worked as a cloakroom attendant at a jazz club and developed a passion for a whole new genre of music. She started to write jazzy, soulful music and collaborated with The New Mastersounds on the track "Your Love is Mine", Homecut Directive on "Come the Revolution" and The StiX on "Young and Foolish". The collaborations brought her to the attention of the major record labels and in 2005 she released her debut single "Like a Star". Its parent album Corinne Bailey Rae, was released early the following year. Her first album - "Corinne Bailey Rae" was very successful, entering the UK chart at No.1 and spawning four Grammy nominations...D. Jeffries

After selling four million copies of her debut album, an effort filled with her precious brand of neo-soul and the uplifting hit "Put Your Records On," singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae lost her husband Jason Rae suddenly and took two years off to grieve and recover before returning with her second effort, The Sea. On the album’s opener “Are You Here,” lyrics like “Wait till you see those eyes” and “He’ll kiss you make you feel sixteen” suggest she’s just fallen in love, but the fascinating idea behind The Sea is that it never explains itself, even if there’s a new richness in Rae’s soft and oh-so-tender voice that suggests something has changed deep inside. As such, the song’s “What’s it even mean?” question could be the beginning of a love affair or a tragedy, but the following “I’d Do It All Again” is even trickier, as post-argument lyrics written before her husband’s tragic loss (“You’re searching for something I know/Won’t make you happy”) take on new meaning . Further confusing the matter, throughout the album the singer speaks of her love in the present tense. Then there are the numbers that come from left field, like the slithering, funky “The Blackest Lilly,” which struts like a sexy Rolling Stones song while pulling inspiration from Philadelphia’s neo-soul party, the Black Lily. It comes to a moving end with the title track, a masterful piece that looks back through generations of loss and the majestic ocean of time that “Breaks everything/Crushes everything/Cleans everything.” If it all seems incongruous, so is the recovery process Rae must face, and the album’s cycle of mourning, returning to work, aching, fondly reminiscing, yearning, and then back again won’t be unfamiliar to anyone who has lost someone close. It doesn’t offer any answers, but The Sea is a testament to Rae’s artistic growth as it provides comfort to those left on the wistful side of eternal love, and insight to those who are not.

Corrine Bailey Rae's voice, always an expressive and soulful instrument, resonates with a poignant and newfound depth on The Sea. Loss and grief are recurring themes, yet a sense of beauty and wonder ultimately radiates from the album's dark corners. Co-produced by Bailey Rae with Steve Brown and Steve Chrisanthou, who produced many of the songs on Bailey Rae's debut album, The Sea was recorded mainly in Leeds and Manchester, England and brings together a new band of musicians. "There is something miraculous that pushes you along, makes you keep going, makes you carry on. It's really about the mystery of that. In fact, the whole album is about that in a way; it's about loss but it's also about hope, about keeping going and trying to find that beauty," Bailey Rae told the U.K.'s Observer Music Monthly, which hailed The Sea as "an extraordinarily intimate and impassioned album.M. mustang

Yes - Drama (1980) (HDCD Remaster 2001)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese HDCD remastered reissue of their 1980 album. Packaged in a limited edition miniature reproduction of the original gatefold LP sleeve. For this one album, ex-Buggles Geoffrey Downes and Trevor Horn were drafted in to replace Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman. It rocks harder than other Yes albums, and for classically inclined fans, it was a jarring departure; but it was a harbinger of Yes and Asia albums to come. A newly emboldened Chris Squire lays down aggressive rhythms with Alan White, and Steve Howe eschews his usual acoustic rags and flamenco licks for a more metallic approach, opting for sheets of electric sound. Prime cuts include the doom-laden "Machine Messiah" and the manic ska inflections of "Tempus Fugit." Despite the promise of this new material, the band soon fell apart; Horn went into production, Howe and Downes joined Asia, and Squire and White toyed and then gave up on a pair-up with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, which was to be titled XYZ (i.e., Ex-Yes and Zeppelin)...P. Yes - Tormato (1978) (18-track Remaster 2004)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This album was to be titled Tor, but the reason it was changed to Tormato, because Rick Wakeman did'nt really like the cover, so out of his frustration he threw a tomato at the cover, and the album cover was cleaned off, but stilled left the remains of the tomato, and that's how Tormato was titled. This album is great all the way through, even through the bonus tracks. "Some Are Born" which appear as one of the bonus tracks would be featured on Jon Anderson's 1980 solo album Song of Seven. "Everybody's Song" is actually an early demo of "Does It Really Happen" which would later be on Yes' 1980 album Drama, which meant later, that Trevor Horn who would in fact replace Jon Anderson on vocals for the album Drama, and keyboardists Geoffrey Downes who would be Steve Howe's bandmate in Asia, replaced Rick Wakeman. As for Jon Anderson, his departure from Yes was only temporary, because he would return in 1983 for the 90125 album, which Jon Anderson's replacement Trevor Horn who later became a successful producer on that album as well. Symphonic pops fans would indeed enjoy this album as well, because some of the songs have orchestral tracks as well like on songs "Onward" and "Madrigal" which was arranged and orchestrated by Andrew Pryce Jackman, and every Yes fan would indeed enjoy it too.

Yes - 90125 (1983)(24K Gold Disk Remaster)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Japanese exclusive limited edition reissue of 1983 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

After breaking up at the dawn of the '80s, Yes made a surprise comeback with this 1983 effort. This album (named after its catalog number) featured a retooled band lineup, with guitarist Trevor Rabin and original keyboardist Tony Kaye joining longtime members Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, and Alan White. It also unveiled a newly streamlined sound, courtesy of British avant-pop producer Trevor Horn, who'd briefly replaced frontman Anderson on the pre-breakup album Drama. The new approach made these English prog-rock vets sound contemporary at the height of the MTV explosion, spawning memorably catchy hits like "Owner of a Lonely Heart," "Leave It," and "It Can Happen." --Scott Schinder

Barclay James Harvest - Live (1974) (Remaster 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered edition of what is considered to be the band's finest hour. Recorded in 1974 on the tour to promote the release of their first album for Polydor, Everyone Is Everybody Else, this live set features all of their classic tracks such as 'Mockingbird', 'Summer Soldier', 'Medicine Man', 'She Said' and 'For No One'. The record was the band's first UK chart album and is constantly cited in internet polls as the group's finest album. 11 tracks. 2005

Though it seems odd that a double-live album could serve as a band's breakthrough release, Live shows the band clearly building upon the strengths of their previous studio albums while avoiding their excesses. Without a string section to back them up -- or to smother them, depending on your thinking -- the band draws more heavily on its rhythm section and on the tonal colorings of Wolstenholme's Mellotron, the latter most clearly on "The Great 1974 Mining Disaster." The rich harmonies, political content, and poignant twang of John Lees songs like "For No One" come across here with the same kind of ragged majesty as Neil Young's live work. And an epic-length "Medicine Man," unburdened of its heavy orchestral arrangement and beefed up with a newly emphasized guitar and drum parts, reveals the brawn lurking beneath the lassitude of the studio version. Overall, it's a solid live collection, and a fine starting point for those new to the band's body of work. Paul Collins

Tora Tora - Miss B. Haven

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I am a huge fan of the 80's music. Was a big fan of Tora Tora. I always hoped they would have lost recordings or an import or something extra to fill the hole that was left. Was online one day & found out that this & 2 other recordings were going to be released. They are all demos & unreleased songs from both previous reordings & even some from the never released 3rd album. These songs on here are what Tora Tora was about. Great lyrics, greater music, the sound is incredible. This is what any fan of Tora Tora has been waiting for. If you are a fan & want or, like me, need more from great bands, then grab this along with the other 2. You will not be dissappointed. You will listen to these songs & be taken back to when time was great & worth living again. Dont miss out on these albums...D. South

Yes - The Yes Album (1971) (Remaster Edit 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Yes Album was remastered and reissued in 2003 by Rhino Records with several bonus tracks, including a studio version of "Clap." The original LP and CD version of The Yes Album refer to the song as "The Clap," given Jon Anderson's erroneous introduction of the song on the original release (although it may merely be the case that by strongly emphasizing the d in "this is a song called clap" it gives the impression of an extra syllable such as could be interpreted as the word 'the.') The Rhino reissue clears this matter up and correctly refers to the song as "Clap" on the tray card, as Steve Howe intended.

Barclay James Harvest - Eyes Of The Universe (1979) (12-track Remaster 2006)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Punk's rise in Britain seemed to be leading to the demise of Barclay James Harvest, the fate awaiting so many of the island's veteran rock bands. Although 1976's Octoberon had finally pushed the band into the U.K. Top 20, it was all downhill from there, as the group's follow-ups in 1977 and 1978 landed ever lower in the listings, something that Barclay James Harvest's shift to a brighter, more American sound did nothing to prevent. Keyboardist Wooly Wolstenholme had enough, and announced his decision to depart in early 1979 during the rehearsals for their forthcoming album. Graciously, he agreed to take the stage with the group for its European tour that summer, with his final gig recorded and subsequently released as The Live Tapes. Les Holroyd initially filled in on keyboards in the studio, until Kevin McAlea was brought in, and recording proceeded apace. The eight-song Eyes of the Universe album was released later that year, a strong set that kicked off with the spinoff single "Love on the Line." If that number showcased their more Americanized style, "Sperratus" highlighted their British roots, with its Renaissance-rinsed ersatz harpsichord and soaring guitar parts. "Alright Down Get Boogie (Mu Ala Rusic)" illustrated that Barclay James Harvest were open to new sounds, in this case disco, and "Rock n' Roll Lady" to old, its riff obviously inspired by Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper." The epic "Play to the World," meanwhile, slowly builds in scope, growing ever more grandiose across its six-plus minutes, until finally Alan Fawkes' saxophone solo kicks in, adding a sweep of Springsteen to the proceedings. "The Song (They Love to Sing)" is nearly as majestic, while "Capricorn" is just lyrically baffling, although musically upbeat. Considering the events swirling around its making, Eyes was a triumph, although once again it took the band even lower in the British listings. But, oh, its impact in Europe! The set soared up the charts across the continent, turning Barclay James Harvest into instant superstars. Eventually, the band would reach new heights in Britain as well, but from this point forth, it was across the channel that the band's fate truly lay..Jo-Ann Greene

Barclay James Harvest - Xii (1978) (16-track Remaster 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Based very loosely around the motif of literary genres (Science Fiction, Fantasy, Classics, etc.), XII shows Barclay James Harvest following many other progressive bands in the late '70s with slicker production and simplified song structures. This attempt at the mainstream doesn't always succeed; the album begins inauspiciously with "Loving Is Easy," a rock track with embarrassing "shoot my love into you" lyrics. But the simple yet effective arrangement of the keyboard ballad, "Berlin," shows that the band is capable of stripping down their compositions without having to sink to the lowestmore… common denominator. Still, most fans won't find much to love here, except perhaps for "In Search For England," which briefly resurrects Wolstenholme's epic keyboard-driven orchestration.

Barclay James Harvest - Gone to Earth (1977) (14-track Remaster 2003)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

2003 remastered reissue of the British progressive rock act's 1977 album includes 5 bonus tracks, 'Lied' (Previously Unreleased), 'Our Kid's Kid' (B-Side Of Polydor Single), 'Hymn' (Single Edit - Previously Unreleased), 'Friend Of Mine' (Single Version - B-Side Of Polydor Single) & 'Medicine Man' (Originally Released As A/B-Side Of BJH Live EP. Features 14 tracks in all & a 16-page booklet. Polydor. 2003

A superb album already, Barclay James Harvest's 1977 Gone to Earth got a lot better in this reissue edition. For starters (before we even get to the bonus tracks that nearly double the running time of the original LP), there's the sound -- the state-of-the-art remastering puts all of the instruments practically right in your lap, but most especially John Lees' various guitars and Stewart Wooly Wolstenholme's keyboards, which get a really close sound. What's even better is the warmth of the overall sound -- the vocals and the playing may be intense, but there's an engaging, seductive richness to all of it, from Lees' electric lead guitar runs on "Love Is Like a Violin" or Wolstenholme's Mellotron on "Poor Man's Moody Blues," which offers some of the richest textures ever heard from that too-often-forgotten instrument. The bonus tracks open with an enjoyable outtake, "Lied," a previously unissued song that's a good showcase for Lees' playing; "Our Kid's Kid" is a catchy, upbeat B-side, with a great melody and a gorgeous overall texture mixing electric/acoustic guitars on lead and rhythm, which might've just worked as a "play" side; a previously unreleased single-edit of the album opener, "Hymn," follows, that might just be even prettier than the LP version, and heralds the single version of "Friend of Mine," which is still one of the most hummable pieces of music ever to come out of the whole art rock boom. It all ends with an 11-minute live rendition of "Medicine Man" that showcases not only Lees' playing, but also Les Holroyd's killer bass work and a performance by drummer Mel Pritchard that's as dazzling to us as it must've been exhausting to him. All of that, coupled with well-written and detailed annotation, plus the lyrics, make this a must-own disc even for relatively casual fans of the band -- indeed, this could be the best showcase of BJH's overall range as any hits compilation that one is likely to find...B. Barclay James Harvest - Baby James Harvest (1972) (16-track Remaster 2002)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered reissue of their classic album with 10 bonus tracks, 3 being previously unreleased, two that were released under the pseudonym 'Bombadil'.

Apparently the band ran out of money half way through this album, and it shows. It is the least "produced" of any BJH album - practically unplugged by BJH standards, but this is not always a bad thing. The general feel is quite bleak, but there is a fragile beauty throughout. The opener, Thank You, is a straightforward rocker, but the rest is stranger. Delph Town Morn and One Hundred Thousand Smiles have got a very North-Of-England-cold-sunlight feel. The brass helps - very unusual on a BJH album. Summer Soldier is a classic, but the version on BJH Live is better. Sounds a lot like Supertrampmore…'s (much) later Fool's Overture. The closing track, Moonwater, is the one time Wolstenholme really hits the target with his orchestral songs. It is gorgeous. I actually love this album, but I'm giving it 3 stars 'cos it's not for everyone, and because of the pointless extra tracks...D. Nebel

Rolling Stones - Some Girls (1978) (Remaster Series)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Some Girls introduced a whole new generation to the music of the Stones. The infectious dance groove of Miss You topped the US charts, as did the album in 1978. Both releases also made the Top 3 in the UK, where the country-flavoured Far Away Eyes, featuring Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, enjoyed substantial airplay. Respectable, the follow-up single in Britain, proved that they could match the punks they had influenced so much. The US market preferred the mid-tempo Beast of Burden which went Top Ten there. A cover of The Temptations' Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), the driving When The Whip Comes Down, Keith Richards' vocal turn on Before They Make Me Run and the urgent Shattered - a US Top 30 single - make this a must-have album, which has already sold over 6 million copies worldwide, and still provides the group with concert highlights 30 years on. Peter Corriston's striking cover design, controversial at the time, remains a classic.

Outlaws in their youth, by 1978, The Rolling Stones were men in their mid thirties, who had been outflanked by the punk movement. The Clash's slogan had been "No Beatles, Elvis, Stones in 1977." The Stones responded with one of their final great records, Some Girls. While parts of Goats Head Soup and Black and Blue were focused on New York City, this album was a late '70s statement of NYC funk. Guitarist Ronnie Wood was firmly within the ranks and he and Richards drove the Stones toward their earlier lofty heights. "Shattered" rocked intensely, while "Miss you" added grit to a disco beat. They even sparked a little bit of controversy among the politically correct crowd when one of the lyrics on the title track suggested that black women wanted to have sex all night (only black women? Isn't that sentiment universal?). The recording resulted in international hits for the group and stopped their first precipitous decline...M. Johnson

Saxon - Rock The Nations (1986) (17-track Remaster)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Having failed to ignite America (or anything else, for that matter) once again with a commercially-minded album, Saxon did another stylistic u-turn. Rock the Nations featured a slightly rawer sound, a return to anthemic (yet pointless) rockers, and the usual incompetent and unconvincing ballads. Perhaps the only thing of any interest on this desperate album is a guest piano performance by Elton John (who was recording next door) on the aptly titled "Party 'til You Puke."...E. Rivadavia

Saxon - Power and the Glory (1983) (17-track Remaster)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1983 release including nine bonus tracks. Power & The Glory was Saxon's fifth studio album overall and featured the singles 'Power And The Glory' plus 'Nightmare'. The album is expanded with a two B-sides, a previously unreleased version of the hit single 'Suzie Hold On', originally produced by Jeff Glixman for potential inclusion on the album plus eight demos. including alternate version of 'Redline', 'Midas Touch' and the title track, as well as the much rarer 'Turn Out The Lights', 'Stand Up And Rock' and 'Saturday Night'. EMI. 2009.

Iron Maiden may be the best known band from the legendary New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene, and rightly so, but for a time Saxon was a close second. Actually, once Maiden acquired Bruce Dickinson and took on the larger world stage, it was Saxon that best embodied the sound and spirit of the NWOBHM scene. The speed, the frantic energy, the "denim and leather" attitude - Saxon had all that and then some. Originally released in 1983, Power and the Glory was Saxon's fifth album, and the first to feature new drummer Nigel Glocker. Saxon was riding a wave of popularity from their previous album (1982's Denim & Leather), and they stuck to that winning formula with Power and the Glory. It's another hard-charging, take no prisoners metal album that splits time between all-out rockers ("Redline", "This Town Rocks"), slower-paced (but no less powerful) compositions ("Nightmare", "The Eagle Has Landed") and titanic metal anthems ("Power and the Glory"). I still prefer the less polished Wheels of Steel and Strong Arm of the Law, but Saxon was obviously getting better at their craft with each release, and Power and the Glory is just an all-around impressive heavy metal album. Power and the Glory remains one of Saxon's finest albums, and is a classic British metal album in every sense of the word. No Saxon collection is complete without it, and it's an album that just about any fan of classic heavy metal should check out. Edition Notes - EMI reissued Power and the Glory (along with the rest of the early Saxon albums) in 2009. EMI has been responsible for some of the best-sounding classic hard rock reissues lately (see: Whitesnake, UFO, MSG and the Scorpions), and their Saxon reissues do not disappoint. In addition to the digitally remastered sound, the reissue of Power and the Glory features expanded liner notes by Classic Rock Magazine's Malcolm Dome and a whopping nine bonus tracks, more than doubling the original album's length. The first bonus track is a live version of "Denim and Leather" (from the Power and the Glory single), the next is a previously unreleased alternate version of "Suzie Hold On" and the remaining tracks are demos. Between the remastered sound, liner notes and bonus tracks, there are plenty of reasons to replace your old version of Power and the Glory.

PS - When you line up the spines of the EMI Saxon reissues they form the Saxon logo and the Wheels of Steel cover icon. I'm a total geek for stuff like that! ...J. Gaines

UFO - Force It (1975) (Remaster Edit 2007)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Michael Schenker and Phil Mogg really started to find their groove as a songwriting team with their second album together (and fourth UFO release overall), Force It. In fact, the last remaining folk and space rock tendencies that had stolen much of Phenomenon's thunder are summarily abandoned here, as the group launches itself wholeheartedly toward the hard rock direction that would make them stars. The first step is taken by Schenker, of course, who confidently establishes the aggressive, biting guitar tone that would define all the releases of the band's glory years. "Let It Roll" and "Shoot Shoot" kick off the album in rousing fashion, and while holding them under a microscope might reveal them as rather disposable slabs of hard rock, they would remain concert favorites for the band nonetheless. The punchy single "Love Lost Love" sounds tailor-made for the American market and acoustic ballad "High Flyer" is quite good, despite taking a dip in energy. But things only really start to gell on the album's second half. Schenker and Mogg wheel out their most mature composition yet with the piano-led "Out in the Street," whose softer sections truly highlight Mogg's highly disciplined, understated vocal style and make the guitar player's more restrained soloing all the more memorable. Schenker is soon back in charge, however, on the stuttering riffs and blistering fretboard work of "Mother Mary" and the downright vicious stop-start strut of "This Kids" -- both UFO anthems. One of the band's best albums, Force It will not disappoint lovers of '70s English hard rock...E. Riva

UFO - No Heavy Petting (1976) (Remaster Edit 2008)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Following the breakout success of Phenomenon and Force It, UFO had finally ascended to the first division of British hard rock. And after hiring a second guitarist and keyboard player in Danny Peyronnel, Schenker and Mogg led the group back into the studio to record their fifth album, No Heavy Petting. A noticeably cautious effort, Petting stuck so close to the rules laid down by Force It that all the excitement of the band's performance wound up slipping through the cracks. Gutsy opener "Natural Thing" was competent enough to become a concert regular, but lukewarm material like "Can You Roll Her" and "Reasons Love" simply added nothing new. And bass player Pete Way didn't help things any with his only contribution, the plodding, amazingly dull "On With the Action." Even the album's best moment, the beautifully executed "I'm a Loser" (which unleashes Schenker for one of his most jaw-dropping solos ever), mimics Force It's "Out in the Street" before closing with a piano pattern straight out of progressive rockers Kansas' "No One Together." The overly dramatic "Belladonna" (complete with synthesizer-simulated harpsichord), on the other hand, is mostly a casualty of time; the kind of ballad that was effective enough in its time, but simply hasn't aged well. Thankfully, UFO would rebound in spades the following year, delivering their best all-around studio effort, Lights Out. [The 2008 edition included bonus tracks.]...E. Rivadavia

Saxon - Crusader (1984) (19-track Remaster)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the British Metal rockers' 1984 album including nine bonus tracks. Crusader was produced by Kevin Beamish at Sound City in Los Angeles (a far cry from their South Yorkshire roots!). According to singer Biff Byford, "We were trendsetters back then. Today, everybody from Trivium onwards dresses like knights going to the crusades, and writes lyrics about it. But back then it was virtually unheard of for a Metal band to do anything like that." As well as previously unavailable demo versions of the album's 'A Little Bit of What You Fancy', 'Sailing To America', a cover of The Sweet's 'Set Me Free' and the title track, this edition now includes the rare tracks 'Borderline' and 'Helter Skelter'. EMI. 2009.

It's hard to pinpoint the reasons for Saxon's gradual fall from stardom, but by the time they released 1984's Crusader, the band had obviously stopped leading the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with its aggressive biker anthems, and fallen in line behind Iron Maiden's epic historical themes and more complex song structures. It did them no good. Crusader was actually a slight improvement from the songwriting perspective, but reveals a band which obviously takes itself too seriously. In fact, they only really manage to rock out like the old days on a few tracks like "A Little Bit of What You Fancymore…" and "Bad Boys (Like to Rock'n'Roll)."...D. Jellinc

Tony Braxton - Pulse

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Toni Braxton’s serially delayed LP ‘Pulse’ has been pushed back yet again. According to Amazon, the record, which was originally slated to hit stores earlier last year, will now be released (provided it doesn’t get delayed again) on May 4th. The album will serve as Toni’s first release on new label Atlantic Records. It’s quite sad to see Toni’s project being dealt blow after blow like this. While the reason for the delay is unknown, one thing that is a near certainty is that should she not drop a hit prior to the album’s release, it’ll likely be curtains for the whole album. After all, we’ve seen it time and time again; albums getting pushed back so much that when they do finally hit stores no one cares. Here’s hoping things work out for Ms. Braxton.

During a time when pop princesses ruled the airwaves with bubble-gum songs about crushes and puppy love, R&B goddess Toni Braxton took control of the charts with her more sophisticated sound. Now, over a decade later, Braxton has released her sixth studio album "Pulse." Unfortunately for Braxton, her sound and style stayed in the '90s. The first song on the album, "Heart Never Had a Hero," just doesn't quite catch. Braxton belts lyrics about being saved from herself, and how she even let a man in though she's independent. The idea alienates the listener, and there is no want to even finish the song. "Get Loose" is supposed to be the album's "celebration music," as she sings. It is supposed to be its "feel good music," but again Braxton fails to really capture the listener, and the song quickly blends into the background noise. The rest of the album improves, but doesn't reach the level that shot her to fame. "Not a Chance" is one of the slowest songs, and comes close to her signature sound. Braxton chases the style and emotion of her successful songs, but the results sound desperate. The final few songs are upbeat remixes, and feature other rap artists. These songs are more in tune with what sells, but still simply forgettable.
Then comes the remix. The best song on the album and Braxton's only attempt at reinventing her sound comes in the form of a remix of her popular single "Unbreak My Heart." Braxton proves she knows what sells, but can only achieve that sound with a half-hearted techno remix of her piece de resistance.
Some of Braxton's songs are catchy, and her voice is beautiful, but the album sounds like every other album she released in the '90s. Music and preferences have changed since then.

Status Quo - Piledriver (1972) (Remaster 2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Digitally remastered reissue approved by the band's official fan club! The band's first album to chart, this hit No. 5 in 1972. Includes the hit single 'Paper Plane' which reached No. 8 while the bonus track is the ultra rare live version of 'Don't Waste My Time' from the 1973 Reading Festival. Mercury. 2005.

Though Status Quo is best known for fast and undistinguished hard rock, they were quite capable of subtlety when it suited them. Despite the name, most of the music on Quo's fifth album, Piledriver, is varied and subtle enough to be interesting. The power rock and roll is indeed there, as represented by crowd-pleasers like "Don't Waste My Time" and "Paper Plane," but so also are quieter, softer pieces with acoustic textures and progressive structures. The melancholy "A Year" is a standout track, a stark, melancholy song about carrying on after a loved one has died. The soft rock intro gradually shifts to a more powerful guitar piece in a way that is reminiscent of early Fleetwood Mac and has that band's delicate sense of dynamics. Elsewhere on Piledriver the band turns in a very credible slow blues piece and a folk-inflected duet for 12-string guitars. Still, most of the Status Quo fans wanted power rock, and the band obliged with one of their best pieces, the tempo-shifting "Big Fat Mama," which actually managed some U.S. airplay, though no actual chart position. The album rounds off with a heavy version of The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues". On the whole Piledriver is an enjoyable listen, one that has aged better than much other hard rock from this period.
