Nektar - Recycled (1975) (Remaster Edit 2004)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This is a brilliant remaster of Nektars 1975 album. Whether Nektar can be considered a progressive rock band is open to question and the band themselves don't particularly adhere to that tag as each album has it's own distinctive style and incorporated many diverse influences. On "Recycled" the tracks are short, but linked and the songwriting and playing is excellent throughout. The inclusion of synthesiser player Larry Fast was inspired and adds a distinctive, modern edge to the arrangements. The remastering by Paschal Byrne is excellent and sympathetic to the material. At last this album canmore… be heard as it should be. The extra tracks are the Geoff Emerick remix version of the whole album, which the band decided against at the time and give an interesting, but different slant on the songs. The whole project is overseen by Mark Powell who did such a wonderful job with the Caravan and Camel back catalogue recently and is also involved in the upcoming Gong remasters. The sleeve notes are, as always informative with lots of rare photos and really make this a must have for both Nektar fans and those who appreciate rock music from a golden age where bands were producing distinctive, challenging records.

Recycled turned out to be Roye Albrighton's final 70s album with Nektar--and what a good one it is, too. Apparently, a concept album about the biological and ecological consequences of mass consumerism, Recycled features some excellent synthesizer work by Larry Fast and additional touches such as an appearance by the English Chorale. The first half of the CD (especially "Automation Horrorscope" and "Cybernetic Consumption") is simply amazing, with both Fast and Albrighton taking center stage: swirling synthesizers and lots of crashing guitar create a virtual blitzkrieg of sound that only softens a bit with "Sao Paulo Sunrise," a beautiful, slinky piece that recalls the group's similar forays into funk on Remember the Future. And like that album, Recycled is imminently futuristic and psychedelic, sort of like a more melodic Hawkwind. Fans of Pink Floyd should also really dig this record. It's a record I rarely ever get tired of listening to...F. Kromee
