King Crimson - Starless And Bible Black (1974) (30th Anniversary Edit 2006)
Compared with Larks Tongue in Aspic and Red, this set receives comparatively little attention. This is a shame as the music is, at least to this listener's ear, a bit more inventive and has a better "feel". While it maybe lack the sheer intensity of Red, it makes up for this in its inventiveness with all the main players contributing well. My main gripe is that it is vocally rather weak, but this is a relatively minor criticism and can be said of other KC albums.Of the tracks, two fail to convince me: Great deceiver and Lament. The first fails to convince because of the vocals (very poor) andmore… the second because I just don't "get it" as they say. Maybe it's just a bit too eccentric, though it is inventive. The remainder of the album is where it really happens. The undoubted "star" of the show (forgive the bad pun!) is the title track: a masterpiece of melancholic distortion ably assisted by a distinctly menacing bass and electric piano. Next to Starless I would put Trio or maybe Fracture (I can't decide). Trio is a nice little piece, though it still has a melancholic edge, while Fracture is one of those pieces whose title exactly describes the music: Fractured! The remainder of the album contains its highlights too: Night watch has a surprising "folky" feel (especially the vocals), while We'll let you know and Mincer are just weird!As one reviewer has commented, this is a very good album for getting to know what this particular incarnation of Crimson are about without the brutality of their live work overpowering the listener...Pepe Panzer
