ABOUT THE SO CALLED 'MIRJANA RAKIC CASE'

Various European organizations have become involved in the debate about Mirjana Rakic’s resignation as President of VEM – Croatian Council for Electronic Media. They are all concerned about the well-being of our media and democracy. The two Croatian journalists’ associations, HND and HNIP, on opposing sides, are also participating in the debate while the most outspoken is Oliver Schrameck who is President of France’s CSA and Vice-President of ERGA. He is on Mirjana Rakic’s side.

I am concerned and worried, however, because everyone involved is on the wrong track. They are all bogged together in useless and pointless exchanges of irrelevant views about freedom of speech, freedom of media and democracy. Meanwhile, the key question remains unanswered – was Mirjana Rakic biased, unfair and selective, or not? In my opinion she and her Council were very biased, very unfair and totally selective in their judgements of mischief, naughtiness and outbursts in the media.

Mirjana Rakić most likely cannot help herself because she was brought up in the old totalitarian (communist) regime. She evidently can’t be objective about frequent and often strong ‘satirical’ commentaries that come from the two major sides of the electronic media arena. Understandably, Mirjana Rakić often turns her blind eye towards leftist provocations and more often reacts to those coming from the conservative side. ‘Understandably’, I say, because the Yugoslav communist regime lasted too long and most of its people find it hard to change their mindset. Many of them are not even aware of that fact.

There are still many people from the old school working in the media and other publicly active organizations. The good news is that they are slowly being outnumbered by younger people of the post-communist generation. To me, however, the most concerning fact is that some of the involved people from the western countries, whom I call ‘do-gooders’, are often ignorantly and very naively participating in wrong interpretations of democracy and freedom of speech.

They don’t emphasize the fact that in true democracy minorities do not and cannot rule over majorities – that was the way in the totalitarian era. In democracy majorities set the rules and trends while minorities only enjoy equality in the common consumption of fruits that such societies produce. The so called ‘reformed Yugoslav communists’ are unaware of that fact while western do-gooders are unaware of their unawareness. So, my message to Mr Oliver Schrameck and the organizations he represents is to get better informed and less ignorant.

Opis bloga
